- Attorney Geoffrey Fieger spoke Thursday on behalf of the family of Porter Burks, a man who was shot and killed by Detroit police during a mental health check this weekend.
Kudos to you Mr. Fieger for articulating so well that mental illness of any kind is a disease and not a criminal matter. Effective mental health/ substance abuse rehab care is vastly lacking in the state of Michigan.
One of the best trial lawyers in history. A grand career in the courtroom.

Actually, they got the best ambulance chaser in Michigan. Talk to any lawyer who has seen him in court (as I have). Jeffrey's courtroom demeanor is that of a four-year old who stages a tempestuous conniption tantrum whenever he cannot have his way.

Everyone trying to hold police officers responsible for not providing mental health services needs to look at the hollowing out of our entire health care system.
Bonzo Reagan encouraged shutting down mental health services for every government, nationwide.
Along with most other states Fat Boy Engler closed nearly every mental health facility in Michigan.
After growing up in Detroit, U.S. Navy combat service and obtaining a B.A. in psychology (San Diego State, ''76), I took a job with Michigan Department of Mental Health. During my four-years' pursuit of an RN license, we gave direct care to adolescents and children on locked wards in one of FOUR pediatric mental hospitals in Wayne Country. Today there are NONE.
The folks who decry the absence of mental health facilities are loath to spend a nickle to pay for them. Since the government closed mental hospitals, our prisons are loaded with the mentally ill (and drug addicts) where there is NO treatment of any kind.
Since even "non-profit" private hospitals cannot make any money caring for the mentally ill, there are very few beds and scanty treatment is limited by insurance caps.

Its not the federal governments job to fund mental health care facilities and treatment except maybe for those who are veterans. Its a state by state issue and the taxpayers determine if they want their money spent on it compared to all the other needs of society.

People are insane for believing that officers should not be allowed to defend themselves. They believe officers should allow themselves to be shot, stabbed, killed. In the subconscious mind of critics, the lives of officers don't have any value...or there is the belief that if they die...they are getting what they deserve anyway...so no big deal. This is how these people think. That position is not logical or reasonable. I agree that mental health services have been cut and thrown in the lap of police, jails & prisons where it doesn't belong (has happened across the country). He's explaining that part correctly...and undercutting his own lawsuit. The lawsuit won't go anywhere.

The police need to be better trained, better educated, and better paid. The Michigan State Police are some of the top police officers in the United States. Fieger will win and a message needs to be sent to all communities and our policy makers that the mass shooting our vulnerable citizens will STOP.
