  • You know what's strange? Super Nintendo World looks incredible, yet strangely gets a lot of hate, especially with the Mario Kart attraction. Today, I would like to discuss why the land is such a game-changer for both Universal and the theme park industry overall, really breaking down its different elements and attractions.

    A quick correction:
The Power-Up bands will likely retail for around $30 and not $70. I'm not sure where I got that or how I didn't catch it when doing the editing, but I suspect that I was equating it to the wands which are around that price I believe.

@@StrawberryCelebi Plus they’re more expensive than an average video game, probably putting the consumer in a situation where they’re like, “ok so I can buy this dinky band where the only differences between each one are basically different colors only useful on trips to universal, when instead I can buy a game and amiibo of the character I like for a slightly higher price” but hey, when I go to universal a ton of people line up all the way around to the bathroom for the wand shop and those things are expensive, so maybe im the weird one.

    • @StrawberryCelebi
      @StrawberryCelebi Pƙed rokem +20

@@eldonkey8752 The wands are more like a displayable art piece once you’re done playing with them, and to Harry Potter fans I’m sure they hold great emotional and nostalgic value. Like Star Wars fans buying replica Lightsabers, they’re high ticket souvenirs on top of being interactive. Meanwhile the Power Up bands are barely different than the Magic Bands they used to give out for free when you stayed at a Disney hotel. It’s a shame they didn’t design something more worth investing in, like a Mario/Luigi cap or a Peach crown, etc. Though I honestly don’t think there is any Mario merch that even comes close to the kinetic energy and fan appeal of wands and sabers.

@@StrawberryCelebi I probably should’ve mentioned that, while I fell out of my HP phase years ago,I know a few people with wands and looking like a wand from a movie and have it be connected to the land is still something really cool that I can admire, as well as the lightsabers even though you have to pay an EXTREMELY hefty price, but basic rubber bands with the characters logo doesn’t scream Super Mario, but the technology used inside the park does look really fun to try out.

While Micheal Eisner was no saint he and Frank Wells seemed to respect the Disney Imagineers. The Imagineering department had suffered so many layoffs that at that time the employees there braced for the worst. They believed that Eisner and Wells would eliminate the entire division, but instead the two leaders who had no experience with Imagineering doubled down on and embraced the concept. Eisner acknowledged that Disney had hired three creatives rather than businesspeople, indicating this focus on innovation and artistry. Fast forward to after Frank Wells death then to now and the growing idea that guests will and are accepting lesser quality simply because it’s Disney. And I get people might not understand what it's trying to do, but really that's a flimsy excuse that doesn't really mean anything. All that matters is whether people are attracted to it and then enjoy it. The fact many are let down by it or don't find it interesting is, itself, a flaw regardless of whther they "understand" it or not. Even from the camera POV I thought the Mario Kart AR ride looked cool as hell, even with the slow movement. I was surprised when I heard you bring up that the ride drew criticism... until you mentioned it was from people responding to the videos and not the people riding it themselves. Like come on, of course a camera isn't gonna capture the AR effects in the goggles exactly as you see them! Also yeah it's a watered down and slower version of Mario Kart, but it being its own separate and fun little experience rather than being 1:1 with the game is kinda the whole point!
I will say though, I do hope they bring other Nintendo properties outside of Mario to Super Nintendo World. If a Zelda section opens up, tickets would sell like hot cakes lmao. I think when people complain about attractions/lands that don't live up to their expectations they're coming from a place of questioning Disney/Universal's budgets. Anyone who goes to the parks knows how much money it costs them for tickets, food, lodging, souvenirs, add-ons. Disney/Universal have enough money to spare no expense and knock these lands and rides out of the park. Yes their profits will temporarily take a hit because it will be expensive. But in the long run it will better demonstrate how they are looking toward the horizon of the theme park experience.
Instead we continue to pay insane amounts to go to these parks to experience the "latest and greatest" land or ride and it is clear where they cut costs or overpromised but underdelivered.

This reminds me a lot of something they had on the Disney cruise back in the day (might still have? I'm not entirely sure), but it was a mystery game where you had to run all over the boat to find clues and solve a mystery. It had similar interactive elements with wristbands that you would scan to see individualized scenes. The best part was that the mystery changed every time so the suspect you correctly identified the first time wouldn't be the same the next time. This allowed the game to have a storyline that not only progressed and saved your personal progress but also allowed for a lot of replayability. So Disney has done things like this in the past (admittedly with fewer physical set pieces and on a smaller scale), but apparently decided not to follow up on it. While the basic idea of these interactiables certainly has a lot of appeal, it looses it a bit when you realise how many people tend to be in the parks and how interacting with these open points of interest can get a hassel. You already see it with the challenges: they have queueline for a reason... and discovering them can become more of a just follow the crowd around (this is mitigated by having a lot of smaller ones ofc)

At one point the wand experience could have been better. We were in talks with Universial on implementing our MagiQuest technology, which much like this had a questing component, though more in depth with alot more effects. Ultimately negotiations fell through and they developed their own system, while it was above my pay grade I've heard it was due to the price we quoted them.

Ok, now knowing of the existence of that Donkey Kong part after hearing everything in the Mario part has me even more interested than I already was

I agree with most of the points you made about the one already in Japan. The theming is impeccable, almost as if it came straight from the video games (Personally I think the Yoshi ride is just decent, even as a big Yoshi fan. It definitely needed more scenes and Yoshi’s island related things in it). The park could definitely use more rides and other Nintendo IPs, but what is already there is great

I will definitely say that the biggest issue is that it leaves me wanting more. Even an additional scene or two could have really solidified Yoshi as a must-do for a lot of people.

What I find interesting is this, when compared to the expansions of Disney, Supper Nintendo almost acts more as a direct competition to Toy Story Land/ Cars land in Hollywood Studios or the proposed expanded Bugs Land in Paris’s Studios. That is, in terms of the type of demographic the IP is targeting. Whereas, Galaxy Edge is truly the response to the Wizarding World. When Epic Universe opens, it will truly be a litmus test of the next generation of immersive theme park environments.

I have to somewhat disagree. I think that Super Nintendo World is the next evolution of Potter and has an even larger range of appeal. It definitely appeals strongly to children, but isn't necessarily catered to them. I do think it's interesting how many of the interactive elements are actually placed out of the reach of most small children.

I'm debating between going and seeing it in Hollywood, or just waiting for the full thing when it opens in Florida. Ideally, I want to experience it as fully intended with Yoshi and Donkey Kong, but I'm also highly curious about Mario Kart.

I actually went there last year when i went to japan for school, around April when covid was still a huge issue, bc I know it will be packed once they start letting tourists visit... but even without tourists..it was still very packed but at least I didn't have to wait over 2 hours for each ride haha. I think the AR ride, it must be experienced, bc there's a bunch happening with the AR, my eyes can't really catch up haha. I wish marioland was bigger tho!

I would like to see Pokémon and Kirby expansions next to it in Orlando as they all aesthetically fit together. Then, like with Harry Potter, add additions into other parks. Lost Continent could make an easy transition to Zelda with a couple of new rides in place of Poseidons and Sinbads stadium spaces, and then do a general space themed area back in Universal Studios (maybe between MiB and Springfield, that incorporates Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero.

I’m still very hyped to get to visit one day and I know overall it will be a childhood dream come true. Still I do find the Mario kart ride disappointing. Just because it was never intended to be a fast roller coaster doesn’t mean that’s not disappointing it just means I don’t like what they intended. I and clearly lots of other fans would have loved a high-speed Mario themed roller coaster with a lot of cool animatronics. Yoshi ride looks nice though.

I think that's the point of the Donkey Kong coaster though. It seems like it was intended to add that thrill element, especially as it jumps the tracks.

I looked up the stickers and it might be challenging. If I recall, you can get one only for visiting in the first month of opening and others are granted seasonally. I'll be close enough to Epic to realistically be able to 100% it, but for most people, that might be a bit too ambitious.

@@PoseidonEntertainment I was actually thinking more like just getting the 3 keys and beating Bowser Jr as quickly as possible, but a 100% "run" of the park could be quite a feat on it's own.

I'm one of those cynicals who thought this was lame but this video has mostly changed my mind. it makes me excited at the potential of a metroid or LoZ themed park. It would be perfect, since those games are known for discovering or receiving items to unlock new parts or interactions in the game levels. Like imagine a metroid based labrynth that's choose your own adventure or something.

I rather hope that add something like a Pokémon stadium area, in the vein of an interactive theater show where the battling Pokémons attacks can be felt by the audience.
