How Disney Destroyed Education and Culture
Disney today is plagued by an intellectual property mandate, one that does not trust park guests to engage with the parks in a meaningful way unless there's a character or franchise attached. While there's nothing inherently wrong with the use of IP in the parks, Disney has had such a richer history of attraction design that drew meaningfully from culture and was often educational. Today, we reflect back on the history of education in the Disney parks, a once important and defining component that has been largely erased in the Iger era.

Discovery Cove - The World's Most Expensive Theme Park?
zhlédnutí 60KPřed 21 dnem
Discovery Cove is one of the most unique theme parks out there, working as an all-inclusive experience combining a water park and a zoo. You'll swim up to an island with monkeys, feed exotic birds in an aviary that has a lazy river flowing through it and you'll swim among various species of rays and tropical fish. While I have a lot of issues with how SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks operate, D...
Ferrari Theme Parks Are So Strange

If I had a nickel for every Ferrari theme park, I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right? You might recall that I just recently went to Legoland Florida and there, one of the interactive exhibits is LEGO Ferrari Build and Race. While not particularly large, it did remind me that there was a theme park, Ferrari Land in Spain. However on researchin...
LEGOLAND Florida is a Bad Value

In the late 90s, I went to one of Florida's oldest tourist attractions, Cypress Gardens, which at the time was just the botanical gardens. However, it was briefly converted into an amusement park in the mid-2000s and was bought by Merlin Entertainments, transforming the park into LEGOLAND Florida and re-opening in 2011. Since that point, I've been curious to go and experience the park but haven...
Why Do People... Hate the Magic Kingdom?

Is the Magic Kingdom a bad park? People certainly seem to think so. If you compare it to other castle parks, whether it be Disneyland or the versions in Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong or Shanghai, I can see why people might prefer those for a number of reasons. As someone who prefers Disneyland to magic Kingdom though, even I think that a lot of criticism for the park is overly harsh and contrarian, o...

However, what I want to speak about today is something differen...
Weird, Inappropriate and Forgotten Disney Park Shows | Walt Disney World

The most important thing to remember is our modern concept of a Ghost is derived from Victorian literature; a combination of Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and Washington Irving bringing about the modern concept of what we would call a “ghost.” This was formalized in the United States by the paranormal experiences witnessed during and after the American Civil War throughout the American South and as far north as Gettysburg. Ghosts as a concept had existed prior to the 1830’s, but the ghost would be defined by the Authors and experiences of the Victorian Era into what we’d see today. It is also why many of the mental images of a “ghost” almost universally involves late Georgian and Early-to-Mid Victorian Era iconography, whether that be clothing, accent, or the portrayal of the cemeteries themselves.

One thing I notice about the Disney parks' earlier versions is that they were a lot less IP-centered than they seem to be now. Space Mountain, the Jungle Cruise, and Pirates of the Caribbean for example weren't based on any existing Disney films, even if Disney would later adapt them into movies. I don't mind rides at Disney parks that are based on their movies (if anything, I expect such from a park with the Disney brand), but it would be nice if they went back to mixing in rides based on new stories instead of it all being IP-based.

you totally arent going to read this. personal anecdote.. When you mentioned pirates 4d i thought "this looks strangly familiar" and when you said "licensed out to other parts" it clicked "phantasialand". It never occured to me, for no real reasson, that "yeah this is licensed from somewhere else" or that it was THAT old. It, as you said, still plays in the "Schauspielhaus"(theater/playhouse) in the Berlin themed area and Funfact, instead of using a digital copy of the movie nowadays, it is still using 70mm film(likely ordering a new copy every couple years or so) I loved it when i was a child, but i havent watched it in years(as i just dont go to amusement parks often, or really at all.... despite living within a day trip distance from Phantasialand)

Disneyland is the perfect example how to have the best of both worlds. Most of their lands are original themes.with IP's sprinkled throughout, enough to add to the experience but not enough to detract from it while still getting the main purpose of the land. Then they only have one IP themed land in Galaxy's Edge, but since its tucked off in its own corner of the park, it's not an eyesore/park cohesion killer. Then again, this is just my opinion, but Disneyland is the only Disney park I confidently can say is up as one of my favorite parks in the world. Edit: Apply everyrhing I said to Animal Kingdom as well

FerrariLand is probably my least favorite park I've ever visited, although a lot of that is due to being next door to the excellent (albeit poorly operated) PortAventura. Apart from Red Force and some randomly nicely themed areas, there's nothing of note. It easily has the worst drop towers I've ever done, which especially suck when next door there is Hurakan Condor, one of the very best towers. And somehow it has the absolute worst Autopia style driving ride (Maranello Grand Race), which is insane given the theme of the park. And Racing Legends is def the worst simulator I've done. Barely moves as you mentioned.

I'm with you on this one. I grew up with that original ride but I don't understand the criticism of the new film comparee to the old. They're extremely similar, but I guess California is a bit more artsy and cinematic, which I can appreaciate from a deeper viewpoint, but I think Around the World's more grandeur vibe fits a theme park well, while getting the same point across. I will say I prefer the shot compositions of California, they are much more natural with sweeping landscapes and slow tilt downs to give you that feeling of gliding. But Around the World's cinematography is not to be underhyped, because the movements around Mt. Everest and the Great Wall are spectacular. This one may just be nostalgia bias for most people.

I went to a Legoland when I was around 13 or so and barely remember any notable stuff about it beyond it having some cool lego builds. Now nearly a decade later I went to Disneyland with my cousin with their 3 year old. The difference is night and day in just how much more memorable of an experience it was. We only went on kid-friendly rides but that whole experience felt magical. I get recency bias but it's clear that Disney was just a better experience and actually inticed me to want to go to it again in the future. Hell, I don't even need to compare it to Disneyland. I also went to Universal around the same time I went to Legoland, and I still remember small stuff about it compared to the latter.

When my family were going down to Disney World back in '89, my mom signed me up for the Animation class at the Disney Institute. We weren't well off by any means, but my parents had saved up hard for that trip and the extra bonus fee for that class (which they kind of lied to my older brother and sister about the costs so they wouldn't be jealous). But then, a few days before we left, we received notice that the class had been cancelled due to low enrollment. While that was quite a bummer for 11 year old me who once dreamed of being a Disney Animator, it became an even bigger bummer later. When we got home, we had a message on our home answering machine from the Institute wondering where I was. Never did get where the wires got crossed but I still wonder about how that class might have been. Very cool to see the experience mentioned in this video.

The one time I’ve been to Walt Disney Studios (on a trip to Paris with a friend who’s an absolute Disneyhead and insisted on visiting both parks), it struck me that it just doesn’t feel like a stand-alone park at all. Disneyland Paris is essential a park and a half, with this tacked on as a sort of supplemental experience you’d only ever elect to visit if you’re on a multi-day trip and already saw all of the main park. It’s a very “let’s do this for a few hours before going to the airport” kind of experience, not a “I travelled all the way from Finland to see this” kind of experience. Compared to the only other Disneyland I’ve experienced, the Tokyo one, it’s night and day. Choosing between Disneyland and Disneysea is a real decision with no right answer, and you will have a great experience in either one even if you never see the other. Meanwhile, if you go to Paris and only see Studios, I’d be concerned about your mental health.
