- The two most popular discount giants Aldi and Lidl!
If you love a good bargain chances are you frequently shop at one of them.
As someone who didn't grow up with aldi or lidl, I was intrigued by the two store
I was hesitant at first but now shop there very often because of the prices and conveniences in many ways.
So I decided to dive in and explore the history, what makes aldi and lidl a discount store, their impact in other countries and answer the same old question of which on is better Lidl or Aldi.

„Either way it doesn’t matter because you’re going to shop at the store closest to you.“ Truer words were never said.
Most true words indeed! Tried doing budget friendly shopping for 2 weeks but it could never beat just going to edeka 5 min away from me.😂
Lidl is the closest one to me, so it's win
Unless you care about good deals more than about the convenience of a store nearby and visit multiple grocery stores in cycling distance.
I drive past 2 aldis, one lidl and a sainsburys, to get to the Tesco hypermarket, it just had more choices and very little price difference
I work at Aldi, and honestly, we unpack, Take card of the shelves, and do till, while managing customers all at the same time. Its quite fun.
I personally like Lidl way more because of the higher ceilings and general vibe.
Back in the day Lidl didn’t have A-brand products in NL like Coca Cola so for those I went to Aldi.
I’ve never been to an Aldi süd though!
That Julién guy really looks like he knows what he's talking about
More Julién content pls

Great video. Very informative. I like the way you cover this topic. One idea for you is food preferences by country. Like in the US, juice preferences are orange, apple, & grape. I hear carrot juice is popular in Germany. All countries have their preferences. Fav veggie broccoli 🥦 or cabbage 🥬
Apple and orange juice are the popular choices in Germany, followed by grape and multivitamin (fruits + carrots) probably. Carrot juice is sold here but I've never actually seen anyone consume it, so I don't think it's that popular?
I love that you can make every topic seem interesting, funny, and engaging! I hope you will keep making videos, Erika! Have a great day.
I love the historical origin stories of these stores. I love Lidl brand of strawberry jam.
Aldi has raised it prices noticeably here, in the U.S. Midwest.
Especially, dairy products -- butter is $4.99/lb. The local grocery store chain has it on sale: 2lb/$5.00.
⭐️⭐️you should do Penny Markt.
I did not expect this video to be so entertaining and informative. Great work!
Interesting connection between Trader Joe’s and Aldi north… I’ve found Trader Joe’s Mac and cheeses repackaged as lidl branded in the us before!!
My family thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing the history and your perspective. You had us all laughing! We have been shopping at Aldi for years and a new Lidl is about to open down the street in our American town.
Small correction, Aldi Sud is a pretty recent entrant to Italy and they go by the "Aldi" branding. The "Hofer" mark might be used in Sudtirol/Alto Aldige which is the German speaking region in the northeast of Italy. There are not as many Aldis in Italy compared to Lidl who is the big leader followed by Penny and then Italian discounters like Eurospin and MD Market. The three big German discount chains have been expanding rapidly in Italy. I tend to split between Lidl and Penny depending on which is closest to me at the time.
Great video! This was very helpful!! 👌😊👍
I watched this to see what other people thought about the two super markets. Our ALDI closed for refurbishment so went to lidl instead. I definitely prefer Lidl because the shop was tidy well organised and the isles were wider . Our local ALDI has constantly blocked narrow isles with staff filling shelves in multiple places at the same time. You also have to watch out for staff flying out of stock room doors at 30MPh / 50kph with a pallet truck . Lidl definitely felt nicer and more inviting. 🇬🇧
I lived in a student dorm in Lichtenberg, Berlin and aldi, netto, lidl and rewe were all pretty equidistant for me. Aldi was the closest. Though I always preferred lidl. Even over rewe.
Though after a while you develop a roadmap of which store is better for what.
I went ro rewe only for cheese, milk and ready to eat foods. And this insanely cute cashier that I *still* have a crush on though its been 3 years since I left Berlin.
Lidl for produce and most other raw materials.
The aldi near me was DEPRESSING though that particular branch had some of the best croissants I ever had in any store. So I went there for those.
And I went to netto pretty much never ever 😆
I LOVE Trade Joe's. I can't explain. I just love it.
I'm so obsessed with your editing and storytelling!!!!!
I live in London.
Lidl is about 20-40 % cheaper than Sainsbury’s or Tesco. They also have German food and beers. I love ReWe in Hannover. A great shop. I miss living in Germany. Much better than the uk.
Great video.
Your video editing is so good! Great video~
Hello Erika, my favorite vegetable is potato. I really liked your video! Thank you. I found it very informative. Carrot is good too!
Really cool narrative that you use with your videos! I wish you made more about life in the Netherlands.
this is the best channel. only now I feel like I understand german culture.before I didnt notice the details
this channel is going to be big
I learned something new. I heard about Trader Joe's in the early 2000s at the same time everyone in my area was talking about Whole Foods. I always thought Trader Joe's was associated with Whole Foods, a smaller version. Turns out. It's not. So, I will stop avoiding this discount store, especially since it's similar to Aldi. Thank you for improving my knowledge about my local stores in Georgia, United States.
I will say, it's not very cheap anymore, but there are good unique items that aren't insanely expensive! Definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
This was a great video!
Your channel should be more popular. I'm sure it will get so over time.
Very astute observations - making your videos high quality and educational to watch!
Content-wise, you already mention that many of the discounter brands are just absorbing the overproduction of the more known brands. I.e. that quality-wise, the only real difference is the packaging.
My personal preference is that no music is even better. Also, it means no annoying announcements 😉
I love the memes springled throughout he video! *but in the end it doesn't even matter* I love it :D
thanks for your review ☺️🙌
This video is so much fun.
Hii so just a quick side note because it hurts my eyes as a hungarian: the country in Hungary, not Hungry, at 5:00, and the Aldi is Aldi here too, not Hofer. :D
Thank you for the video
i'm from hungary and we call aldi as.. aldi, never heard about hoffer, only in austria
I am so sad going into a german store in England and not being able to buy Fleischsalat
Thanks for your video!❤
6:04 the sweetest “🥜🌰” I’ve ever heard ☺️
Don't forget the annoyed waiting sounds people make when you're too slow packing your stuff. I'm perfect with these sounds 😂
Loved the video ☺️
Thanks a lot for this detailed explanation and comparision. I also prefer Lidl.
3:50 ooh those nacho flavours look cool. Don't have those in my Lidl.
Was this a Raffaello liquer at 3:33 ??? 😳 also totally agree for Aldi in foreign countries...I visited one in the Netherlands and it was kinda depressive 😞 although when we had aldi in Greece some years before (because they didn't last long and close all of their stores 😢) they were really welcoming !!! 🥺 And if i remember well in greece they had the orange logo while the one i visited in the Netherlands had the blue logo 🤔
Also had no idea that Trader Joes were brothers with Aldi 😳
And finally how goooooood and cute is your editing and animations 😍 once again loved it !!! 🤝👏 and thank you for all the infos and searching and comparing 🥺❣️
ps my favorite vegetable will probably be avocado if that counts as a vegetable 😅🥑
your narration is great 👌
You have a very sweet voice!
This was a really good quality video, new sub :-)
Cauliflower & Brinjal(Eggplant)
It isn't called Hofer in Hungary, it's Aldi.
Lidl is great here, I shop there all the time. So cheap 😄 But quality is great, at least here in Sweden. They sell many local Swedish vegetables, meat, eggs and stuff. Even organic tofu. I think Lidl concept is a good one, but yeah long lines almost always... I swear, no matter when I go there it's packed with people, that's the only annoying thing, compared to my other local store. Music in food stores? We don't have that in Sweden, thankfully. I would be superannoyed at that.
"i prefer my burger patty as thin as a pile of sticky notes" - erika 2022 😂
I do almost all my shopping at Aldi (North) as a Dutchie. I do visit Lidl for some things, but I like the quality and taste of Aldi brand products much better than Lidl.
Tomato is my favorite vegetable
I loved your videos !
I know you didnt ask, but i prefer lidl
Lidl for the win
Aldi in Switzerland is called Aldi Suisse, not Hofer.
My favorite vegetable is garlic :D
Is it on porpose that all your videos feature someone in a yellow raincoat? Or do I just notice it because I just finished the Netflix series Dark.
The no music thing is a major reason to shop at a discounter. Music is dangerous. ANYTHING could play. Even cognitohazardous garbage.
Even if the music is nice, which rarely happens, it's much nicer to not have that constant background noise straining my mind.
Truly, the discounter is the autist's best friend.
You are great
My favorite vegetable is corn
Me a lidl fan: YaYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah yes
The middle of Lidl
Such a brilliant idea.
Julien looks like the younger version of bobby fischer
There's also normally only 3 people working causing frustration and anger
in slovenia we call aldi "hofer"
In Austria as well
The lidl world headquarters bus in Arlington va 3500 s, glebe hard to get to wirhout a car
I used to call them cousins.
in the US, Aldi has no in-store bakery but tends to be cheaper than Lidl and the stores all seem to have a similar layout, I find Lidl usually has larger stores with more products and more name brands (and a bakery), but the stores are difficult to navigate and have a more cluttered feel with boxes displayed set at odd angles in the middle of the aisles; almost feeling like a hybrid of an Aldi and a standard grocery store. I enjoy shopping at both, as well as Trader Joe's.
I pronounce Lidl more like (liedl) or (Ledl)
How do I apply for a job ALDI'S
I would shop there just because there’s no music. I really hate music listen up CZcams videographers I’m not the only person out there that hates music. I like the music I like through quality tech.
What about fish product? You ignore the products for some reason.
What's kid meat taste like?
Lid-al or Lee-dal?
Leedl. Two consonants together. Aldi (Al as in al dente)
Is it funny I was just in Aldi 10 minutes ago 😂😂😂
No music? Lidl US has music .. my breakdown of American versions , aldi feels cheap, lidl is weird and Trader Joe’s is up there with Whole Foods .. lidl in ny bought out a grocery chain called best market, and that gave them an advantage.. aldi and Trader Joe’s don’t have license to sell alcohol but lidl does because of the grocery chain they bought..lidl ny also has a fresh sliced deli department with land o lakes meats and cheeses in the bakery..also near me there is 4 lidl to 2 aldi .. ny lidl also do not require a quarter to use a cart.. I’ve been to aldi in Vermont and New Hampshire and they have that icky dollar store vibe , but they sell booze and I love their irish cream and wines..don’t get me wrong, I always will love aldi , been shopping there for 10 years , but lidl has them beat.. the stores are double the size of aldi, they sell beer and I love the fresh bakery and deli land o lakes cheeses
There are "Slavs" who never even heard of Solyanka.
In the USA, Aldi seems to be "Aldis".
Quando se fala de vegetais eu penso em botar uma carne por cima pra ficar mais gostoso 😂❤😂
'no music' so that customers leave in as little time as possible. A bit of an oxymoron as the specials aisles are made to promote time in store etc...
trader joes is still just trader joes, its not a rebranded aldi
it's owned by aldi north though
@0:59 It is not pronounced "liddle". 😂
@11:38 That is not how it works if you care about deals and good discounts. It is worth shopping around because the next best deal is just a bicycle ride or e-scooter ride away.
I am not watching this she wear socks with flipflops
ALDI in UK is definitely better than LIDL
3:45 Solyanka is actually Ukrainian and Russian food.
The term "Slavic food" is as vague as "Germanic food"...no such thing really. We are nations, don't clump us together.
It's weider that Lidl has greek food to be honest.
Will not shop at aldi
Because dei
Wake up people
Hello Sweetheart 😘
These German grocery stores are suck
It's called Leedle and not Little! 🤦♂
I like your comments, mostly your sense of irony. Gracias. 😂😂😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I’ll keep shopping at Lidl as long as they don’t stock settler Israeli goods 🇮🇪🇵🇸
LIDL ON TOP!!! LIDL GANG FOREVER
