Glaze Kiln Opening: Reglazed Fountain Amaco Glazes & Oxides (Pottery Video/Tutorial)

  • In this video we unload another glaze kiln containing some of my own work and also my newly welcomed back students work. They are such a talented bunch. I have also reglazed a fountain top by applying hairspray before adding more glaze and reglaze fired applying Amaco Sky/Seaweed and Textured Turquoise to great effect over the previously underglazed and rather uninspiring first glaze fire. The top is part of a two part fountain I have been working on inspired by seeing the turtles in Barbados in January 2020 - just before Covid kicked off!
    A new student, Fern, has made some really lovely test tiles in readiness for her project to make a dinner service. Really interesting textures and oxide/glaze combinations. Karen has used a large leaf to make a great water bath for the birds. Fabulous use of oxide on craft crank which can be left outside all year round. Great to see my students back to creating some fantastic pieces
    I had a go at replicating a mug I purchased from Hamilton’s Pottery on Barbados by using Cobalt and Copper Oxide. I suspect this will have more glaze added and will go through the kiln for another glaze firing. All in all a good prototype to learn from.
    My work is available to purchase via my Etsy shop (link below) if you’d be kind enough to take a look.
    Hi I’m Sarah Amos. I gave up my day job and am now living the dream as a full-time potter and teacher, running courses from my studio, The Pottery Corner, in a little village just outside Chichester on the South Coast of England. With Cissy and Charlie, my studio companions, we welcome students of all abilities from complete beginners to the more experienced, teaching throwing on the potters wheel as well as handbuilding techniques.
    I love to share my clay experience and knowledge by passing on pottery techniques in my Top Tip Tuesday videos; which include full tutorials on items to try out yourselves. I also sell my work via my Website and Etsy Shop. So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and let’s dive into what’s going on in The Pottery Corner today.
    Don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell to be notified of when new content is published. Thanks for watching.

    I always bring back either a handmade mug or a wine glass from my travels, it's so nice to use them later and think of the place they're from :) Much better than the "usual souvenirs" and then I get to support the local artists as well. Win-win :)

    I also purchased pottery from Hamiltons in Barbados. A lovely couple with a very nice outdoorsy studio :) His son was in the Great Pottery Throwdown.

    Absolutely I buy pottery from other potters. I collect tea bowls. I have so many cups - no room for any more cups. Love the birdbath. I am going to start using your phrase “I quite like that.”

      Hi Lisa - there was so little room when I bisque fired it that I had to lower into the kiln with a sling! I slightly misjudged the size when making 🤣

      Hi Monique - great to hear from you again. Having real life students back in the studio has been brilliant - if a little tiring - I'm out of practice! The fountain is going to be the main exhibit for an exhibition I have coming up in the summer. I can use it to take commissions from people so I'm glad it managed to come through in one piece. Thanks for watching and commenting as ever - from my most favourite place in the World - lovely Bonnaire.😍

      Thanks my lovely. Your leaf is beautiful. We've all been admiring it this week. The big one may get done on Monday if there's room in the kiln. We had to put the bisque fountain top on a sling and lower it in - fag paper width! There were quite a few drips of sweat on the brow🤣

    • @thepotterycorner

      Hi kathy - personal choice - depends whether you want them to be shiny on the surface or not. See my video on the difference between slip, underglaze and glaze on my channel 😀

    May I ask why you don’t use kiln wash on your shelves?

    • @thepotterycorner
      @thepotterycorner  Před 3 lety

      Hi Michele - I find kiln wash is a 'dusty substance and sometimes flies around inside the kiln if it gets chipped etc. Usually use homemade cookies but forgot this time - hey ho - must fig out the dremel🤣
