Tried this yesterday! I used Betty Crocker Red Velvet mix - I'm American and live in Ireland. Betty Crocker is the only American brand cake mix sold here and luckily, Red Velvet is one of the few flavours sold (two flavours of chocolate, vanilla, funfetti, and carrot are the others). I had red food coloring on hand so amped up the red colour, but otherwise followed your recipe to the letter. The cake turned out beautifully!! I made the almond buttercream frosting, too, and wow, what a scrumptious meeting of cake and frosting.👏🥇 I had to search through a few recipes to find one that used both buttermilk, sour cream, and vanilla. Finally, I found yours and knew it was the one I was looking for. Thank you for posting! I'll definitely be making this one again.
I will be making this for Easter! Thank you for sharing 😀

I add a box of white chocolate pudding mix to mine and its amazing!❤
I always prepare my own buttermilk because I don't believe in buying a quart (or a liter, in my case) for one or two cups.
Thank you so much, I wish I can get a good mixer here
Does Amazon deliver to where you're located? I live in Ireland. There isn't an Amazon Ireland but I shop with Amazon UK. Not all vendors deliver to Ireland but most do.

Ok. Can u do a doctored funfetti cake mix???
I doctored a funfetti cake mix a few weeks ago. I made it up as I went along and I'm certain that Amy could do way better than I did. Mine turned out well enough that my picky husband wanted me to bake another one. I substituted freshly squeezed orange juice for the water,s (had to use two oranges to get enough juice)added the zest of one of the oranges, a tablespoon of self-rising flour, and a tsp each of vanilla and almond extracts, and The box directions called for 3 eggs but I added an extra one. I beat the eggs then added the cake mix, used the lowest setting of my mixer just enough to blend, then added the flavorings and for fun, added orange food coloring. I folded in about 3/4 cup of chopped walnuts. I honestly expected the cake to be a complete disaster because I'd never done any additions to a cake other than adding a tablespoon of flour. I was so surprised that it turned out so well. I made a simply buttercream frosting and tossed in a bit of orange zest. I'm want to try this with lemons instead of oranges.
Is this supposed to be less sweet? I made it and it's not sweet. Hardly at all. All the sweetness is going to have to come from drowning it in frosting
I wish I'd maybe just used regular milk instead of buttermilk?
duncan hines isn't the greatest. you can also add another cup of flour and another cup of sugar, as well as some cocoa powder to the dry mix. adding instant pudding powder (chocolate or another complimentary flavor) will also add more sweetness, as well. all box cake mixes just taste like flour and chemicals, imo...
Years ago I made a red velvet cake from scratch and it wasn't sweet. Boxed red velvet don't come close to the taste of authentic red velvet cake. The one in this video does come very close, though. I don't think red velvet is supposed to taste overly sweet. The frosting adds enough sweetness, though, IMO.
