What kind of icing do you normally eat on your red velvet cake?
I use the butter Crisco flour and granulated sugar I liked the marshmallow cream the frosting I make is almost like whipped topping yummy
We normally use a standard cream cheese frosting, but I'm making green velvet cupcakes for st Patrick's day and I'm going to try yours! 😍
I make a buttercream icing and add Almond extract and my Special Ingredients is Cool whip! Yep- I add about a 1/4 of a container at the end and whoowee it’s the BEST‼️✨🤍

My grandmother’s recipe included the cooked frosting (flour/milk/powdered sugar/butter/vanilla) and I’ve had this frosting on my red velvet birthday cake almost every year of my 56 years. This frosting is what makes this cake the best in my opinion.

Miss Paula, I need to call my late friends daughters. They have recipes written from the hands of her ancestors written from some 1500’s & 1600’s we used to spend our days off work at her family’s home in Virginia. We would go out to the garden pick our fresh veggies and fruits. Then head down to her cousins home in town and pick some grapes and figs. We had the best times baking and cooking 🧑🍳

My mom used to make us kids, a devils food cake with a marshmallowy type icing. We never got the recipe. She would put a colored toothpick in it and whoever got that toothpick got a birthday surprise from the sibling who’s birthday it was. That was a fun tradition until tragedy hit our family. That said, Red Velvet has become my new favorite 🎂 cake. Love 💗 you Miss Paula this one made me cry 😢

1/2 lb butter
1 cup sugar
1tsp.vanilla
5 Tbsp p.flour
Cream butter, with sugar and vanilla. Set aside. Mix flour and milk in double boiler cook until thick cool completely then add sugar mixture and beat really good icing your cake
We always had cream cheese frosting with pecans just like you did but not the marshmallow but I bet the marshmallow would be delicious. Loved hearing about grandmother paul and seeing your grandbaby eating cake. What a delight. I always feel so proud when my grands love something that I have for them to eat. I remember two things….1) Seeing that red velvet cake on the counter when visiting my Grandma in Alabama. My eyeballs were almost counter height. 2) My Grandma rocking us on the back screened porch…she would hold us and say “Grandma Loves You” over and over.
My Amish Grandmother, who was my inspiration to become a Chef, always used a meringue type frosting. When my husband and I moved to South Carolina is when we first tasted it with cream cheese frosting. I really enjoy your recipe and the frosting. Anything with marshmallows & pecans gets my attention!!

FROSTING:
1 stick butter
1/2 c. Crisco
1 c. milk
1 c. confectioners sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. vanilla
Cook flour with milk until thick; cool. Cream sugar, butter,
shortening and vanilla with mixture for 10 minutes (until
light and fluffy). Blend in cool flour and milk mixture.
Frost cake and decorate as able.

Paula , red food coloring does not agree with my digestive system, but I love Red Velvet cake. My question is can it be made omitting the food coloring. I know t won’t look like a red velvet but will it still work.

You can buy 8" parchment rounds pretty cheap. So much easier. I also put a small individual packet of freezedried coffee in my buttermilk to dissolve. Love you Paula.
Hi paula,first of all you look great. The frostingredients I've always made originated from the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Believe it or not it's called poor man's frosting ,the recipe is a cooked frosting 3Tbsp. Flour,and 1 cup of milk in a saucepan. Cook flour and milk together with a whisk so mixture dosen't become lumpy.cook until mixture becomes very thick,you need to constantly stir this.when finished put mixture up in the freezer or frig. Until it is completely cold. Beat in separate bowl 1 cup butter,1 cup sugar 1teasp. Van.1teasp butter extract and a pinch of salt,add this mixture to your chilled flour mixture and beat until good and fluffy.
Loved it! My mother used cream cheese frosting but I prefer the cooked icing with milk and flour.

My cake recipe is just like yours Paula, but my icing is different. It uses butter, cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla and a cooked and cooled mix of water and cornstarch. I also use pecans and coconut.

Traditionally I do a cream cheese frosting, but one recipe I have uses a white chocolate cream cheese frosting!!!! That takes it up another level!

I loved this video despite the editing. I am not sure who has been editing the last couple but I would enjoy the videos more if you could go back to the old style. Okay, I wasn’t sure how to approach this, but I’m glad to see your comment. This editing style is not for me, and not what we’re all used to on this channel. I liked it rough around the edges. This video was edited to the point of it feeling like I was watching it on fast forward the whole time. Go back to the talking and natural vibe, it makes us feel like we’re all in the kitchen w/Paula. This video was hard to keep up with and digest. Not the same…I’m hoping someone will take these comments into consideration, and do something about the editing in future videos.
@@iheartps 100% It seems as though this video is edited in a way where they think we are just watching for the recipe itself. Most of the time I'm not watching these videos every morning for the recipe, but for just being able to hang with Paula and her team while she cooks in the kitchen. I want to see it all even if the video ends up being 20-30 minutes long, that's even better! Was very happy to see I wasn't the only one feeling this way.

My great great Aunt Lora’s Red Velvet cake recipe has a different icing recipe also. I have heard (from Ree Drummond) that the original Red Velvet cake recipe did not have cream cheese icing but came later. I believe she said the recipe originated in Louisiana. I have struggled with the recipe and can never seem to get the icing quite right. Thanks for your video!

I know a lot of people like cream cheese frosting on the red velvet cake and although cream cheese frosting is good I prefer it on carrot cake over red velvet cake when it comes to the red velvet cake I just like simple vanilla frosting🤷🏻♂️🖤
