Best Red Velvet Cake Recipe With Box Mix

- This is how I make doctored red velvet box mix so that it tastes more like it's made from scratch. The added ingredients give the cake a better texture, more flavor, and more stability for stacking. Doctoring box mixes is a great way to make your cakes taste better if you're not a confident baker yet or you just need a shortcut.

RED VELVET RECIPE ►
1 box red velvet cake mix, I like Betty Crocker Delights super moist red velvet cake mix or Duncan Hines.
5 ounces all-purpose flour (1 cup spooned in and leveled)
7 ounces granulated sugar (1 cup)
6 ounces sour cream, room temperature or plain greek yogurt (3/4 cup)
4 ounces unsalted butter, melted (1/2 cup)
2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 ounces vegetable oil (1/4 cup)
12 ounces buttermilk, room temperature, or regular milk + 1 Tbsp of white vinegar. (1 1/2 cups)
3 large eggs room temperature
1 Tablespoon Super Red Food Coloring, I use Americolor
SWISS MERINGUE BUTTERCREAM RECIPE ►
6 ounces pasteurized egg whites
24 ounces sifted powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
24 ounces unsalted butter room temperature
1/8 teaspoon yellow food coloring
1 teaspoon electric pink food coloring
2 Tablespoons super red food coloring

I am so happy you posted one for red velvet. I have been using the one for chocolate and vanilla religiously and they come out awesome! I was hoping you would have one adapted to a red velvet recipe and here it is. For those saying they don't see how it is easier than making a red velvet cake from scratch - trust me, it is easier because the mix ensures a moist cake and a proper rise whereas from scratch can be iffy some times. And there is no need for creaming room temp butter, and less flour to measure in.

I was so excited to see you post this because my son and my daughter in law requested a red velvet cake for their baby shower. It's the one cake that I always seem to have trouble with. I am amazing with decorating and making any of the other flavors just not red velvet. But I had to mute the video when you were icing the cake with the bench scraper on the glass turn table. It was worse then nails on a chalk board. I knew after the crumb coat you would have to repeat it and so I had to turn on the captions. I know obviously that wasn't intentional, but I just wanted to make you aware of how awful the sound was because I can't imagine I was the only person who couldn't stand it. I do love your videos and appreciate you sharing them ❤️

He Liz thanks for the hack I have a question my Kitchen Aid mixer is new to me works great and I love it my issue is the when the whisk attachment is on I can not lock it down so it jumps around they all appear to be the same size any ideas. Just tried the Brioche bread OMG.

Hi Liz, I love your recipes and appreciate you sharing your baking wisdom! Apologies if this is a silly question, yet what makes this recipe easier than simply following your red velvet recipe? It seems like you add in quite a few ingredients that you would use in a regular red velvet recipe.
I've wondered the same thing Leah, if you're adding why not just put more in and make it homemade. I substitute
milk for water, add 1/4 cup flour, and 1/4 cup sour cream.

I’ve learned from sugarology that using an immersion blender on your buttercream also brightens the frosting. It’s an option that you can use that will have the same effect but will save you from having to heat it up.
It's pretty but very time consuming I bet it taste good too.

What kind of mixer are you using?
She uses a bosch universal plus mixer, it holds more batter than a kitchenaid, but doesnt have as many speeds

this is literally making a cake from scratch, adding a box mix to it. with an ExTRA cup of flour and then 2 mins of high-speed mixing- good luck. that's what created all the tunneling holes in the cut cake when it's shown overhead at 3:00 ... too much gluten and too much mixing. the cake will taste like a muffin, not a cake, also
