- One of my favorite 'beginner' houseplants by far is the Umbrella plant (umbrella tree), or the Schefflera. This lovely, low maintenance plant provides a wonderful structural appeal in the home with its incredible branching and umbrella shaped foliage.
In this video I provide all the information you need to grow them well. I also include information on how to prune and propagate them with success! #schefflera #umbrellaplant #houseplants

My grandparents have one of these they got in 92 that they’ve kept in the same pot for decades 😭 It’s thriving and is at least 8-9 feet tall 🤣
It’d no doubt be taller if it had the room to grow up but he hunches over and takes up a whole corner of the room
Wow I bet that tree has lots of great energy
You are extremely good at explaining plants and how to care for them. Thank you so much.
You are very welcome
Just what I needed! My plant is so leggy and growing sideways because it's so top heavy! Now I know how to prune it for better growth!
Glad I could help!
Excellent and clear information!!! Thank you so much!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Lots of great information in all your videos. Thank you
Glad you like them!
I love umbrella tree, it's such a beautiful plant.Thank you Devin for your advice. It was very helpful.👍🍀🌿
You are so welcome!
I have two small ones that I had outside all summer. I brought them in for the winter and they are still doing well. I didn’t really know much about the care for them but I do now. I think I’ll do a little trimming today. Thank you.
Awesome! Glad the video was timely
Super helpful video!! Thank you!
Glad it was instructive!
Great tips! Can’t wait to prune my Schefflera now! 💚✨
Wonderful!
Very helpful - thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Very nice thank you
Most welcome 😊
I bought this plant on impulse and it has become my favorite house plant
They’re low key and luxurious
Great info
:)
You have had the best video of the many I have watched now. My plant only has 2 stems to cut. It has been in someone else's care for about 5 years. I hope I can get roots to grow on what I have to work with. So far I've done everything wrong. Now I'm going to see if I can do it your way! 🙏
Try it this way! You’ll find them very forgiving plants!
Very informative video. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this video, I feel better pruning mine now!
Go for it!
Thank you!
:)
I’ve had one since 2005 so it’s pretty big and heavy! It’s a very easy plant for people that tend to kill plants. LOL I put him on our North side stoop in the summer (Iowa) and he just loves it. Going to try to propagate him now since I want one for my office at work. Thank you for showing how.
I bet yours is a beauty!!
Very helpful 🙏🏾
So glad!
Love the video, so clear and informative. I just bought my umbrella plant and love it but did not know what to do with it to branch it out. I will definitely give it a trim, especially that spring is coming and we will have more day light. Thank you Devin 🙂
Thanks for watching:)
thank u for sharing😊
My pleasure 😊
Thanks for the video
You bet
I've been just letting mine grow upwards from its original state and realized that I might need to do something for him soon because he is getting so big! I had no idea you can do so much with the schefflera! I am very excited to give my schefflera a new look!! This helped so much, thank youuuu!!! :3
Sweet! have fun shaping it how you want, they handle pruning very well
I went to my local nursery for the first time today just to check it out, and walked out with three new plants🤣 One of them being an umbrella plant. Thank you so much for this explanation, your instructions and information were super easy to follow!
That is awesome!
Very informative and nice video thanks a lot for sharing all the info
My pleasure
Thanks so much Devin !!! I was going to ask you about Schefflera. Mine is so leggy and was hesitant to chop the tops off as there is new growth at the top, but ... I'll sacrifice.
On another topic ... I brought my Desert Rose in from outside, according to your directions (we live in the same zone) and ... yes, all the leaves DID fall off. Then ... new ones started growing. It's amazing. I have not watered it, nor EVER given it any fertilizer. No wonder we love plants !!!
Im glad this video was helpful as well as the desert rise tips!
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you. 💚 New sub.😊
Welcome! Thanks
Nicely explained. 💕 From India
Glad you liked it!
@@plantvibrations which country you belong?
Fingers crossed I didn't just kill my newly cut and propagated plant. Assuming the newly cut piece lives and gives me beautiful roots and I put it in a small pot as per your suggestion... when can I move it to the pot I cut it from? The piece I cut was off the top of the really leggy original stock/stem.
Many thanks!!
I’d give it a chance to root out the small pot it’s in first!
Hi Devin . Good information about schefflera and your schefflera looks amazing in the house .we grow schefflera out side in the garden and it can be like a big tree. Have anice day .
Wow! I’ve never seen them outside!
Hi Devin . One day come and visit my village Fasouta we all Catholic Christians and my village located in the Upper Galilee in Israel and see the schefflera and other plants . Have anice day .🎄
Take a 3-5 cuttings and root them into one pot. Braiding them to make a money tree banzai. It’s fun
I’m going to do that!
Thank you! I have a plant that is about 20 years old and it's getting leggy. I've been so afraid to prune it but you gave me some confidence. Going to prune it and start some new ones. Also, is there a certain time of the year that is best to prune?
Great, do it! This can be pruned at any time just fine
Good vid!
You spoke about “leggy growth,” what is leggy growth and why is it bad?
Leggy refers to long twiggy stems. it generally means the plant is searching for light because not enough is there
Love the video! I just bought one of these plants, and was wondering if putting it about 6 inches away from a south facing window would be a good amount of light?
That sounds like a great spot to put it
Hi Devin. Mine is healthy but it really is a thirsty plant and will drop leaves. It is the most thirsty of all of my plants. I use a really good potting mix. No proble, just not sure why so thirsty.
Hmm that is interesting, is it in too small of a pot?
Hi! I just lost a variegated dwarf umbrella plant I'd had for over 6 years due to pests I could not get rid of. I did find it was susceptible to pests. I pruned it probably once a year. The only propagation method that worked was from leaf stem cuttings rooted in water but it took forever to root. Liked it but not sure I'd replace it.
Spider Mites? if so, keep some Safer Insecticidal Soap handy... respray every 5-7 days.
Ahh that’s such a bummer :(
I love this video, thank you so much!
Question, once I have a stem that is rooted, can I place in with the mother plant which is still on the small size to help make it bushier ?
You absolutely can do that!
Thx for this video, Devin! I’ve had a dwarf umbrella plant in a small pot for 4-5 years & it’s doing great, however, maybe it’s time to move it to a bigger pot so it can become a floor plant?
Yes! They’re wonderful floor plants
Hi Devin, thank you the information and for being so thorough, my question is, should we use a water plater mister for water the Schefflera?
I don’t think it’s necessary !
Your video was so helpful, thank you!
I only have one stem... How can I let it grow more stems?
It is simply a question of time and it will create branching. These don't tend to branch out when cut back unfortunately
I got a fiddle leaf fig, a calathea and the umbrella tree, the fdf and the calathea are doing great, but the umbrella is loosing leaves, and it was supposto be the easier plant lol, I might have potted it in too big of a pot so if it dosent recover ill repot her in a smaller pot
Yes, perhaps try potting it down to a smaller container size.
Can you keep a propagated cutting outside (in FL) if it's in a shady spot? Or should I keep it in the house?
outside in your region will be great
What can you do with the woody stems? Is it too late to cut and expect new growth?
If you cut into the woodiness it may not regenerate
My friend had this plant and I looked at it last week, she was doing great. Now today a bunch of the leaves 🍃 fell off when I touched her. Why would that happen ? I would like to transplant her into a bigger pot. Would that be okay or too stressful for her right now ? My friend keeps her apartment chilly too. The plant 🌱 is probably in stress because she’s in a different environment ? Which is a little bit warmer. So should I wait a couple of days to transplant?😊
That shouldn’t create too much stress to cause leaf drop. I would go through with repotting it
i have an odd question. My ball python enclosure has a dwarf shefflera.. there is plenty of floor space 36x18, but only about 3 in of soil depth.. Can i prune it to stay under 18in? and also i dont mind roots filling everywhere because i need good drainage and it would be part of cleanup crew but will the roots ever need more depth or is the space itself fine if it drains well?
Its doing great right now in the bio dudes terra firma, but im worried it will end up dying 1 (because of the snake) and has plenty of natual fertilizer. I have temperate white springs in there, dwarf white isopods, and armadillium peraccae isopods that eat feces and the plants goal are 1 to look nice and 2 to consume urates/nitrates, I also have 2 golden pothos in there
It’ll probably be a good idea to take it out once every 12-18 months and root pruning it. That’ll keep the roots healthy and by root pruning and top pruning the plant will stay naturally smaller
I have the larger leaf variety. It appears to be rotting from the bottom up on the stem. I have already lost one section the other two have started the same thing. Should I cut above the brown area and try to root to save the plant? Or what would be your suggestion. Note, I have repotted to try to prevent any further rotting.
Yes absolutely take cuttings of the healthy sections and root them like I show and start over
@@plantvibrations Should I pull up the roots of the browned stem after getting the green cuttings? I am wondering if the roots are dead.
Are you able to propagate the wooded stems of the plant? My coworker lets hers grow a little out of control and the plant is falling on itself. The stems we need to cut are wooded
Cut as low as you want but then cut the woody section and prop the greener section up top
Thank you!
Thank you for being a smart as you are cute
You are so kind
Live in Central Illinois and since bringing it inside in the fall.for winter leaves keep turning brown and fallin off . It's very naked sparse now and I have had for 40yrs it's very big and I'm totally sad over what has happened
I do however have new leaves but what else cN I do.to stop the droppk..of leaves?
Thanks
Hmm did it get too cold?
@plantvibrations I do live on central Illinois and it does drop below freezing here
Would havin my ceiling fan cause this to happen? If so I will move it out of my bedroom
Where can I send you a pick of my schefflera. It is 22 years old and huge. It is shedding now and I have clean around it once a week. But in summer and spring it grows leaves again. It is getting huge but I do not date to prune it.
You can send me a photo on Instagram
My umbrella plant is a single trunk about 5' tall. No branches. Can I prune the plant down to about 3' ? To start branching it out and then use the trimmed off pieces to propagate?
Yes you absolutely can. I can’t believe it hasn’t branched out. That’s very unusual
@@plantvibrations thank you. Once I get back to the USA , I will get to work on it.
Mine is also about 5' and one single stem. But I kind of like it like that, a nice green column.
I bought two that had browning leaves - one is green and second one has white variegation. I wanted to save them, but I feel like they just don't grow. The leaves stopped dropping, but they don't put out new leaves after 2 weeks of buying them. I think I'm failing them:/ They have pretty bright light in the east-facing window still
Give them two months not two weeks!! Or better, six months, plants are slow
