Hey, really excited to see a video covering IIDX from a newcomer's perspective! Just wanted to point out a few things that others have probably mentioned already, but just in case - the "Lightning model" (the newer cabinet design with the touchscreen - the one you played IIDX 31 Epolis on) debuted a few years ago with IIDX 27 Heroic Verse. Lightning model cabinets have some advantages over the classic style cabinet. The display runs at 120 Hz rather than 60, and the turntable is grippier and its resistance can be adjusted. You still see the older style cabinets sometimes (the one you played IIDX 30 Resident on) because, well, money. The point system - it's 2 points for a "Just" Great (flashing great), 1 point for a "normal" Great (orange colored great) and 0 points for Good, Bad, Poor. Grades for songs (AAA, AA, A, B, etc.) are assigned based on point total. It is possible to fail a song with a AAA grade or pass with an F. Difficulty scale - actually goes up to 12. Each song has up to 5 different notechart versions - from easiest to hardest: Beginner, Normal, Hyper, Another, and Leggendaria. To use "Red Zone" as an example, it has a Beginner chart (level 1), a Normal chart (level 5), a Hyper chart (level 9), an Another chart (level 11) and a Leggendaria chart (level 12). Anyway, really happy to watch this and see your first impressions of IIDX. Hope you stick with it and enjoy it!
Great review! I appreciate that you decided to dip your toes into the deep end of rhythm games and came out happy with your experience. IIDX is considered by most (including myself) to be the hardest arcade based rhythm game so many people quit before you start really getting to the really fun songs. I do have to mention I did hear some errors in the video like the difficulty ranges from 1-10, when the game actually ranges from 1-12. Otherwise, fantastic video and i cant wait to see what you have to say about my 2 favorite rhythm games, Sound Voltex and WACCA. Good luck and keep pushing! There is no end to rhythm games 😊
@@NovaArk-oh2mjI was gonna try reaching out to your socials but I can't seem to find any I can use LOL. If/Whenever you want to do an SDVX review, I'll be more than glad to provide footage of you need any. Also thanks for stopping by the stream the other day!
Great review, it's cool seeing the perspective from a new player in the west! The learning curve is what makes this series criminally underrated. I'm hoping the lightning model along with english menus (that get more and more stylish every year) can help bring more people into discovering how satisfying it can be to successfully complete the BANGING songs from bemani's in-house producers. Back when i found the game (because of RED ZONE of course), I never even dreamed this series would make it to the US in cabinet form, just based on the failure that was the US release of beatmania on PS2. Then came Round 1, which happened to grace my city the exact year the lightning model came out with IIDX26: ROOTAGE. Playing in public for the first time renewed my ambition to get good! Now i'm more addicted than ever using my 300 dollar controller to practice.
@@NovaArk-oh2mj that’s awesome. I consider myself lucky to live an hour away from the main cab I play on. If anyone spills beer on my only Round 1 lightning cab, I will hunt them down! My next closest option would involve a 3 hour drive to Chicago.
Ah I've seen you filming yourself playing at the local Round1s. Recognize a lot of local players in the footage you capture. Also, I hope by now that you have an eamuse card because it's good to be able to save scores and track your progress.
appreciate that you got people to help you start the game because usually these arcade games would push people away because they are confusing to setup (luckily now there's english menu) but back then the cabs are exclusive in japanese and it's not easy for a complete stranger to walk up and start playing.
Always enjoyable to watch someone taking a shot at iidx and grasping the game over time. Hope you're having fun! A ton of bangers are just not available at lower difficulty levels, unfortunately. Personally used to live relatively close to an arcade with offline Rootage, but not anymore :(. Really wish I could play on a real machine with online functionality.
Also just so you know, resident and Epolis aren’t exclusive to those specific cabinets. Before Epolis came out, resident was also on the Lightning model cabinet, it’s just that when the Epolis came out in the US, only the lightning models got the update, so the old legacy models were stuck on resident. However in Japan, there was an upgrade kit released for the old legacy cabs, so you can find Epolis on both kinds of cabinets now.
its very cool to see someone's first impressions of beatmania as someone who started their own personal journey with the series around 6 months ago :) i think my favourite part of iidx specifically is how visible the ways everyone plays the game a little differently are because the controls are weird and asymmetrical and the game is hard as balls so when you get into a groove it feels like you can really call it your own
Awesome to see a video on IIDX, hope this video shows up on peoples radars! I am pretty much a baby to IIDX (got eased into it by my gf and started playing around Heroic Verse/Bistrover), but man, is it such an addicting game. I do agree with your opinion on the aesthetics, that was definitely one of the things that hooked me in (Bistrover has such a beautiful style, although Happy Sky has my heart with its such clean look). Hope to see more rhythm game videos from you.
I'm really glad to see someone who isn't already super into the game make a video on it. I think sometimes the really experienced players who make videos can sorta miss the forest for the trees and focus only on the gameplay and skill while overlooking the music and style of it, but this video gives a more complete look at the game than most.
Nice video, as someone who always wanted to watch more (or even make) thythm gane content, i hoota say i really appreciate this! Its always nice to hear someone else talk about one of your favorite games, especially if there isnt much to search up. Thanks for creating and sharing yhis with us! I was jumpscared by my own hands from Clue’s video at 2:00. Lmao Nice to see Beatmania getting some more English coverage! Also, the two cab types are typically called Standard/Legacy Model and Lightning Model. The Lightning Model was introduced with IIDX 27 Heroic Verse and replaced the Legacy Model. It’s main upgrade is that it has a 120Hz monitor instead of a 60Hz monitor. There were additionally small numbers of non deluxe Beatmania II cabs produced early on which are so rare now that they aren’t generally called standard cabs. The difficulty goes past 10 as well. It goes all the way up to 12 and even in the lower levels difficulty is a suggestion and gets more and more blurry as you move up. Especially with the older songs. The game still has a lot of charts from when they still treated it like 5 key Beatmania. Resident and Epolis aren't spinoffs. They're part of the mainline series which has been Beatmania IIDX since they killed off the original 5 key Beatmania and Beatmania III in 2002.
Nice to see another new Beatmania player. IIDX is fun, but boy. It took me MONTHS to get anywhere with it (not of constant play at least, but you outright need time to build up muscle memory). I mostly played a lot of Sound Voltex in the meantime when I went to my local R1 since it was just way easier to learn (and the one IIDX cab was often in use anyway), but these days, I mostly go for Beatmania. It's just a hard game. The only harder rhythm game I can think of is Pop'n Music. Pop'n players scare me a bit, lmao. 9 keys, and they're huge buttons, so it's harder to keep a fixed hand position. The old cabinets really are WAY cooler than the new ones (the big LED panel is the coolest thing), but the nicer turntable, 120hz screen, and headphone jack (how the hell did Konami not put a headphone jack on IIDX cabinets for like 20 years) on the new cabinets just makes it better to play so much. Getting a controller to play at home is terribly expensive and I am making do with a super ghetto homebuilt one even though I constantly find myself looking at the $300 Phoenixwan (starting price too), which is arcade accurate. If you want to play at home, Konami has a subscription service, IIDX Infinitas (it's pricy, and they still sell song packs on top of that), but you can also get BMS song files to play in Beatoraja (basically a clone for PC).
Glad to know an insight of someone overseas who's new to beatmania. 12:26 There are a bunch of hard techno tracks in this franchise. Either you need to dig deep into the song list or grind a lot to unlock them through your eAmuse save file.
This was a really entertaining video! I only knew of beat mania from a really obscure reference to it in a cartoon, but now I might just have to see if there's any arcades in my area that have it.
if you ever get back to playing resident (somehow) theres a setting that increases the timing windows, i believe it's called "expand judge" and you can enable it by pressing 9 in that settings menu when you hold down start on the song select screen. i think they removed it in epolis for whatever reason
Thats a pretty interesting take from someone whos foreign to the basic style of rhythm gaming! By the way, its quite possible to play 'Beatmania IIDX' at home if you dip into the BMS community online, especially the "BMS of Fighters" series. Believe it or not, its an annual competition where artists and musicians all over competed to make new original songs playable in the Beatmania IIDX format. The latest one ended in Dec last year with over 500 entries, and there're tons of these custom-made songs available for free as long as you know how to set it up! Nice way to build that 8-keys proficiency when not in the arcade! Beatmania IIDX also has a close rival over in Korea in the local hit DJMAX; the latest one is DJMAX Respect V which is available on Steam; its MVs are top-notch, and it has a robust music history dating to the 2000s. It also has support for 4,5,6 and 8 button play! Finally there's Osu, which has Beatmania IIDX-style gameplay (in OsuMania) in addition to other multiple game modes including its iconic style inspired by Elite Beat Agents!
Great video, I think you do an awesome job introducing the game and making it easier for the average western audience to understand. Some minor notes here and there RESIDENT's theme was "Resident DJ" playing in to the club scene the game is inspired from. @ 5:31 You highlight the differences between the Legacy Cabinet and the Lightning Model and later on you refer to the Lightning Model as "an upgraded version of RESIDENT" while not entirely untrue, you're tying the idea of the version of the software running on the cab to the cab itself which isn't the case. The Legacy cab can run EPOLIS (but Konami locked EPOLIS behind a hardware upgrade that costs $5k for those cabinets) and the Lightning Models used to run RESIDENT. So when you say @ 9:04 "I definitely liked experimenting more with RESIDENT as opposed to EPOLIS" it'd be more correct to say "I enjoy experimenting on the legacy cab as opposed to the lightning model" because if you say the former to an old head without any context, they'll look at you weird and probably not understand. @ 7:58 You mention how the legacy cab doesn't let you scratch forward and backward without getting what would be called an "excess poor", this is by design because effectively to the game you're scratching twice, you only need to push in the direction to register a single scratch. Highly recommend you break the habit now because it will come back to bite you at higher levels. Especially with harder scratch charts. Song selection at lower levels definitely leaves a lot to be desired, I highly recommend you push through, there's a ton of bangers in IIDX and I'm sure you'll find more that fit what you're looking for in terms of hard techno/electronica (play BITTER CHOCOLATE STRIKER) as you get better and can play harder charts, once you get to around 7s you can play at least the lowest difficulty of every chart , also bless up for calling out Daisuke. Level 10 isn't the highest, Level 12 is (as mentioned in other comments) @ 15:39 you mention using both sides, this is called Double Play a.k.a DP a.k.a Doubles and can be accessed by pressing 3 on the numpad while in song select/the main menu, you'll notice on the score results screen in the bottom middle it'll say either SP/DP as well as in the corner in song select which is a nice visual indicator for it. I know this may seem like I'm highlighting "things you got wrong" but I want to clear up any misconceptions for ya, I know the game is a beast to learn especially one with such a deep and storied history. Keep at it, it may feel like a wall at first but it's well worth it imo. Keep up the great vids!

As a long-time Bemani fan, you nailed this review right on the head. A couple things to note. 1. Yes the upgrades of the Lightning model make for a better playing experience but the lack of tactile feedback with the effector sliders and the lack of an scrolling LED ticker makes the presentation more plain. I understand why they made these changes (Less mechanical parts to service is good for operators), but the LED ticker displayed romanized-versions of the Japanese songs and it was a means for players to learn how to pronounce the Japanese song names at the arcade. I wish they would add that back in the Lightning cab's touch screen interface. 2. I feel your pain about the lack of actual club music/hard techno tracks in the modern IIDX games. The music selection has definitely gotten more dull overall compared to anything pre IIDX19, but every version still has its memorable tracks. I highly recommend deep-diving into the OST's of the first 10 styles and even all the 5-key OST's because you will see an era where Konmai really put forth the effort to give a wide variety of genres, as well as music that is easy to consume outside of the games.
Hey we go to the same arcade! I just wanna say there’s a TON of hard dance and techno, especially in beatmania. I don’t play IIDX that much so I’m not familiar on its music organization but typically arcade games have pop and anime stuff listed first. These games are meant to market to your average otaku in Japan so it make sense those are listed first. This game literally started its own style of electronic music, a lot of it being extremely intense. Otoge music is literally the only reason I play these games. There’s even “boss style songs” that are obviously reserved for higher difficulties. Bemani literally has its own team of producers dedicated to making music for theses games. As well as commissioning popular electronic artists like Camellia. One of my favorite IIDX exclusives is POLKAMANIA which starts as “weeb polka” then turns into fucking dubstep and and hardstyle. Don’t even get me started with Hardcore TANO*C which you’ll learn a lot about once you get to WACCA. For a popular clone of the game there’s even a huge music competition where teams create beatmania style songs in the literal hundreds. Every year. The music in these arcade games are literally every electronic music fan’s wet dream.
Max level is not 10 but 12 😰😰 I play some 10's but I can't imagine myself anywhere in the future clearing LV.12 charts... Anyways I'm getting a legacy cab (the resident one you played on) that's been made since 1998. The new one, the lightning model, was made like in 2020 when Heroic Verse aired
Yeah no problem glad I could help. It pretty cool to see myself in a video essay like this. I was wondering if you could send me the footage that you took of me playing?
this video makes me weirdly happy, seeing another person into the west diving into the world of rhythm games

Thank you for the feedback.
Great to know. Yeah I havent played consistently enough to get passed Level 3 tracks, but I'm def. interested in checking out the exclusive tracks.
Love Beatmania despite sucking ass at, love this video
Welcome aboard!
Make more arcade reviews!!!!
great video!!!!!! need to tap myself into beatmania lol
Go for it!
Unfortunately, the more interesting electronic and subgeneres only start appearing around 4+
here's a comment, hopefully your video made it to more audience
