  • Konami's arcade rhythm games have gained some popularity in the west in the last 15 years. With the advent of improved internet technology, Konami put their arcade games online, to allow for the recording of data. During all this, a small network project quietly came along to make a massive impact on the western Bemani community. This is the story of the ill fated rhythm game shadow network Programmed World.

An interesting point to note: At the time of the PW shutdown, there were only FIVE Round1's open in the US and only two of them outside of California. I was very fortunate to be near one of those non Cali locations. By the end of that year they opened 3 more stores and by 2017 they were opening stores like crazy. If it weren't for covid, their expansion rate would have continued to grow into 2020 and beyond (many planned stores were cancelled). Hopefully in due time some of the major key areas without a R1 (or plans for one) will be able to get them.

6:00 if anything understates the issue; I've been unable to explain the rationale of Konami to outsiders who have not grown up with rhythm games and gotten Stockholm Syndromed into these business practices. it's incomprehensible to outsiders just how xenophobic some Japanese companies like Konami are until you understand how stonewalled they are deliberately, both in terms of sales and communication.
their business practice would be UNTHINKABLE to US companies - refusing to expand your product internationally would get some CEOs outright fired by their board of whatever company, depending on if they lacked sound reasons for refusing to expand. clearly, there is no real reason for this, as Kyle Ward has built a rhythm game (StepmaniaX) in the konami-style genre with an extremely small team that has shipped sales internationally and uses a network similar to Konami; likewise with Andamiro, who also ships internationally with a network and no problems.
Konami's bizarre and arguably self-destructive business practices can only be explained by xenophobia or some other irrational artifact of Japanese business culture. they are not a company that deserves any respect from the international market, and holding any admiration for them at this point is ludicrous.

Konami is so risk adverse, it makes me sad to think America will never have full e-Amusement support. Obviously the arcade scene in USA and Japan are extremely different, but the expansion of Round 1’s makes me hopeful that someday Konami might reconsider the American market. Anime and video games are extremely mainstream now especially after the pandemic; it would be great if a good % of the American communities got into our beloved JP rhythm arcade games since a lot of people have been visiting Japan and round 1 continues to open new locations.

We used PW in the SEA region too. The community had one IIDX cab in decent quality running SIRIUS, the arcade owner completely supported us with the decision and helped us keep the cabs in good condition. Had an absolute blast for those short years 🥲
By 2015, KONAMI did the impossible: a location test starting MUSECA and SDVX with online e-amuse. While we still don't have a huge amount of games here but it's such an important win for us who kept the BEMANI passion going.

@@lovelymayapopCould just be a similar story, but I'm guessing Indonesia and the IIDX cab would be the one in Batam. I'm really out of touch with the arcade scene since COVID happened, but before that point I remember some arcades around greater Jakarta area had official online IIDX and SDVX (and Oreca Battle, if anyone reading this would care lol). Things were getting better and I hope they still are now.
Other things of note I remember: Museca was loctested but well nobody has Museca in official capacity now. Nostalgia was too, but I lost the thread of where that one went, either way I don't think it ever got to be as popular as IIDX and SDVX.

"Konami very rarely dabbles in releasing games in the US"
bro, they rarely release games in the *entire american continent period*
The closest thing to beatmania/IIDX we got here in Argentina was EZ2DJ almost 20 years ago IIRC, and that was short lived.
I don't even know if we can *BUY* cabs straight from Konami to begin with, or have access to their network.
Andamiro was/is one of the few Rhythm Game companies that still ships stuff to south america.

It's been almost a year and a half since US E-Amuse for DDR has been updated. Sure, it's still online for score saving, but for some reason Konami is still making US players stick to A20+. I was lucky enough to play on an imported gold cab a little while ago (which obv runs the JP version of the game), and oh my God, we are missing a TON! No idea why they never released us A3, and it's quite a shame they still have not. I'm glad that the server is alive, but it's gotta have a ton of dust on it at this point. I want them to release it soon, as my R1 only has American-spec white cabs. (R1 please send JP HDDs or bring in a gold cab from overseas I'm begging you). I'm afraid Konami is going to just end support or leave us in this space of a "last version" until A4/idk comes out, and even then I'm not sure what they're gonna do...
