    Getting burned with fake silver hurts but it's a good education. I was burned by an eBay purchase once. Never again. Thank you, Josh! Happy New Year!

      Lots of fake ASE sellers on ebay. You can tell the fraudsters because they sell fixed price, just a buck or two above spot, have joined ebay within the last 30-60 days, typically have a CA address, and they have no reviews. I report them to ebay but they’re like whack-a-moles and just pop up again under different seller accounts.

      I reported someone for selling fake eagles 🦅
      The seller said it weighed 27g
      I told eBay it’s a fake as it’s not an ounce
      EBay declined my opinion and let the seller continue selling the fakes
      They’ve sold over 80 coins some I reported this
      Hurts to see so many buyers getting ripped off

    I've been collecting for approx 50 years and purchasing silver eagles since 1986. I can usually spot fakes by their appearance but I always have my LCS check them just to be sure.

    I’ve been buying for about 15 years and I just recently bought my first fake eagle dated 2023. it was a private deal . I compared it to one I bought from a dealer and it was obvious. The weight was good, non magnetic. Poor strike, wrong luster and ping test was off

  • @tgraymk
    @tgraymk Před 6 měsíci +1

    I buy some from a LCS, and some from actual distributors that have an ebay store, Liberty Coin, Bullion Exchanges, etc. So far, I don't seem to have any counterfeits, but you never know. I only have the ability to magnet test, ping test, weigh, and measure.

    Great points. Here’s my New Year’s dilemma, this week there’s an online dealer sale going on for random quarter ounce gold coins for $540, I was debating on buying now or waiting until the first quarter to see If prices may be lower when Fed doesn’t raise interest rates and buying then. I know the price fluctuates when they increase the interest rate or decrease it, but what happens to Precious Metals prices if they don’t move the interest rate,how does that (non move) effect the price of pm’s?

I said, ya I know silver, but he must have taken my word for it, because, I got no more silver quarters, but I thought it was the right thing to do. 😄

    Ive only bought one fake.
    A 50 Peso gold piece 😮 i bought it knowing it was a fake. The seller said it was lite in weight, the color was off but he didn't know anything else.
    I paid under $20 just to see what it was.
    It turned out to be a wax casting in aluminum, gold electroplating and wouldn't fool anyone...well maybe that one guy.
    Nice example of a contemporary counterfeit and it's probably worth double what I paid.
    Looks like a Typical cHyna, silver plated brass example.
    Sounds like the buyer got their money back and have a few examples to learn on.

      Before I bought coins I bought some trump coins, the price was really good and if I had a brain I would have realized at that to run. But I purchased, delivery was pretty fast and so I bought some more. Now looking back the price was to good to be true. If a silver coin costs x an OZ then why did their silver coin cost 1/2 that? Shitty materials. I keep them around for novelty items. Now just buy from mints.

    I wouldn’t be itching for a precious metals purchase bad enough to buy anywhere other than the three online dealers that I use.
    I like to go to my local gun store that has a coin shop attached to it. When I look at the coins I cannot imagine who would buy from there.
    I see stories of people getting great deals at their LCS and I can’t sleep at night.

    • @dbrennan1523
      @dbrennan1523 Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah I just accept the premiums at the online stores. I have found some to be cheaper than others. I started buying at the most expensive because that was the most well known. Now I know better and buy from cheaper realists. There are delays when you purchase as they wait until your cart clears. Then you have the shipping but if you trust the site there is little risk just annoyance at the time it takes.

    You cannot depend on precious metal testers all the time. They can be fooled also. You need to know who you are buying from. There are a handful of US MInt approved direct purchase dealers. Google the requirements for being a certified US Mint direct dealer of coins. The requirements are the most stringent a person can imagine. So when you shop authorized US Mint direct purchase suppliers you are buying the real deal. When you look into the feedback of online dealers you can also see that these people are right for you to buy from.

    I have been wanting to buy a sigma metalytics machine for a while. Some say to buy whatever machine is available at the lowest price. Which would be the original metalytics. I'm seeing that for around $900 or so. The pro version is closer to $2K - $3K depending on the wands and if you add the bridge. I'm not interested in the investor version. With all that in mind, which would you recommend? Is the pro worth the extra cost?... Thank you for your CZcams content and expertise.

    The ignorance of people getting taken on these fake coins is not excusable and I do not feel sorry for them either. There are multiple "tells" that criminal counterfeiters provide in their online offerings. You have to take the time and ask yourself if the price you are paying makes sense. it costs $4 to ship up to 4 ounces by 1st class mail. eBay takes 13% of the sale price. Profit is 10% to 20%. So if spot silver is $24 how then do you buy a single ounce of real silver for less than $28 in a minimum quantity of 5 coins?
