I'd say that lost was primarily due to poor scouting. The American players are not familiar with the Greeks, their play style & moves. On the other hand, the opponents knew Team USA too well by watching NBA games. They kept fouling Spanoulis, sending him to the line & gave him rhythm to hit a few 3s in the 2nd half.

Yes but please don't underestimate their talent. They were some of the elite Euroleague players back then. They could easily play in the NBA. @@terrylew9960 Poor scouting isn't a thing at knockout stages. USA had a very bad mentality, they thought that they would easily win everybody and just walk home with gold medals. That Greek team was way better than that with Antetokounmpo. Firstly, the two biggest players in Greek history were playing together, Diamantidis and Spanoulis. Also, the other pieces of the team were very solid. Papaloukas was great, Nikos Zisis also. And don't forget about baby Shaq, Sofoklis Schortsianitis. When Lebron saw big Sofo he said he can't guard him, he was literally Greece's Shaq. Greece played with passion and fearlessness and proved that athletism isn't everything. Greece managed to slow the pace, which is bad for team USA and play at their own tempo, USA players were caught off guard and panicked, but they ultimately lost.

Dimitris Diamantidis won his 3 Euroleague titles with Panathinaikos in 2007 (Final 4 Mvp), 2009 and 2011 (Final 4 Mvp), Vasilis Spanoulis won one Euroleague title with Panathinaikos in 2009 (Final 4 Mvp) and back to back Euroleague titles with Olympiacos in 2012 and 2013 while getting back to back Final 4 Mvp too!
In addition, there was another player called Theodoros Papaloukas , which had 12 assists against USA on that game. He won two Euroleague titles with Cska Moscow in 2006 (Final 4 Mvp) and 2008 and he was consider as one of the best point guards in Europe at the time (FIBA Europe Men's Player of the Year & All-Europe Player of the Year 2006, Euroleague Mvp 2007, Euroleague assists leader 2007, 2009). Last, Panagiotis Giannakis as the head coach, a living legend of Greek basketball.

I can think of two main factors:
1)Soccer is by far the most popular sport in Europe and South America and FIFA World Cup is by far the most important soccer competition, so a FIBA World Cup is perceived as a big deal. Soccer olympics are sort of a joke and sometimes not even taken into account as an actual achievement (u23 teams compete)
    2) the European national team scene is more competitive, teams are more equal and European Championships are played every two years, that helps develop a higher interest for European players in participating in these tournaments

I think the biggest mistake that USAB manager at the time was allowing themselves to dropped out most of the roster from 2003 line up who just won the Tournament of America(that make US qualified to 04 Olympic). Also the fact that Larry Brown wasted the young LBJ, Wade & Carmelo time to be in there but he'd barely even used them was absolute criminal. After the roster changes and with their seniority mindset, they should've had just brought some Piston player like Chauncey, Ben Wallace & Hamilton who'd just won a chips at the same year instead of those rookie I mentioned. Those Pistons player would've had tighten the defense in that US squad. What a stupid management

Defeat to Brazil in the 1987 Pan American Championship final in Indianapolis changed basketball in the United States. It was the first American team's loss at home. It was so unexpected that the organization of the event didn't even have the Brazilian national anthem to play at the award ceremony because nobody believed in the possibility of a Brazilian victory. Oscar Schmidt had a masterful performance with several three-point shots in a row.
One of the consequences of that US defeat was that from then on NBA players became part of the Olympic team, which was previously represented by college basketball. Another consequence was that the United States started to play by valuing the three-point shot, which until then was practically ignored because it had been created only a few years before and was not considered as important in the game.

NBA owners have a long history of blocking their Canadian born stars from playing for Canada in the Olympics. Mark Cuban always blocked Nash from playing in subsequent games after 2000 claiming "insurance reasons". He pulled this crap with Dirk barring him from playing for his home country as well.
Andrew Wiggins is the first Canadian star to get CLEARANCE to play for Canada since the Rick Fox era. The result was a much better showing at qualifiers than they have since Sidney.

The 2004 failure has nothing to do with Kobe not being there, but everything to do with Larry Brown’s coaching style and team building. Brown hated playing rookies and because of that, reduced the roles of LeBron Wade and Melo drastically on the team. They all came off the bench for limited minutes, and had a very small role. Iverson and Marbury were also selfish players who never gelled in a team system like that, and Iverson still had beef with Brown from Brown’s Sixers days. Even if Kobe was on that squad, it wouldn’t have changed those dynamics. It was just a very poorly built team.

It’s not even LeBron’s fault either. He was like the 10th guy off the bench for that team, and he had little minutes. Same with Melo and Wade. its funny how if america sent their 12 best guys every time since the start of the games, they would always win gold in fiba and olympics even to this day...not once has a team been good enough to beat the 12 best americans imo at any time...

@@razkable Probably because Iverson, D Wade, Lebron, Duncan, Odom, Stoudemire and Carmelo wasn't enough to beat Argentina aparently.
