- This is my 3.5 mile commute to home from work, it starts with downhill, but I have two big hills to climb, one is 1 mile long and 6%-7% grade, and the last hill is 12%-14% grade. This is with the bike unlocked at max speed and max pedal assist. I mostly use pedaling and only throttle to start. I will have a companion video that shows the ride to work, which will be downhill and see how the Kepler does on that. #arielrider #kepler #ebike #commute #commuterbike #speed #uphill #review
IDK if you already do have them, since you look well equipped for riding in traffic, but I always suggest(after being hit multiple times, once breaking 7 bones which even 5 years later my hip is in rough shape)is get good bright strobe LEDs front, back and sides. They REALLY make a difference. I talk to ppl I know who see me out for rides that tell me they see me from crazy far away compared to others. I got basically 2 cheaper kits(not the cheapest though). A kit that has front and back lights that have a few diff colors and can strobe and diff speeds and I got another kit that are blinking LED spoke reflectors. So dual purpose. During the day I have them on high and at night the lowest brightness works just fine along with my headlight and break light. It could save your life for about 50 USD for both if you hunt around.
Another great video. Thanks for explaining everything so accurately.
Great time, the Kepler is a beast for sure. Yes I appreciate you adjusting the monitor, is looks very clear. I will definitely do some research on the different ones available. Is a good idea so I won't lose my corner space, I'm at NYC so I'll be commuting with traffic close by. I think I will be safer with a monitor replacing the mirror. Definitely something worth looking into. THNX AGAIN JUNKER. KEEP THEM VIDEOS COMING. STAY SAFE.
It would be nice if the monitor was a little bigger. I can't compare to mirrors, but so far it's been very useful in my commuting.
@@thejunker5961 Thnx. I will definitely look into it.
Of topic… how do you feel a 5’8 rider would do on the high step?… thanks
So it's worth a month wait.. back ordered right now
20 mph up a mile long hill is bananas.
It's awesome to be able to cruise up hills on this bike, it does not feel like it is struggling at all, especially when pedal assisting. I haven't tried throttle only, but I imagine it would be a little slower.
The beauty of a Bafang 1000w Motor.
Nice video! Great shooting and audio!
I'm trying to get better, I'm new to this.
Very nice kepler
Ordered mine. I can't wait.
Hi Badge… I was wondering how long they say you will be waiting? Thanks!
tip for tripping the lights; put down ur kickstand right on one of those lines on the road for the sensors, the direct metal contact will trip the sensor.
Interesting, I will try on my way home.
Dunno if they still use stoplights like they did back in the 70's but you used to be able to flash your brights at them to get them to change.
I have a very similar commute and have been looking to upgrade my ebike. I'm currently on the walmart GoTrax Alpha which has way less power than the kepler to the point where some hills the motor doesn't even help anymore. After watching this I can't wait to be able to order one for myself.
Nice video! I’ve got mine on order.
Great videos, on your next video can you show how you have the rear view camera mounted on the Kepler, thanks.
I've had COVID, but am working on a set of other videos. Hold tight.
Thanks. I'm hoping it'll handle the very steep hill I live on top of. The small city I live in has many steep hills, so I'm really hoping the throttle alone will handle them.
This is the the whole reason I got the bike, it has handled all the steep hills near my house without a problem. I'm very happy with my choice.
@@thejunker5961 I wonder if you went up the hill say at 10mph instead of 20mph if you'd use the same amount of battery since it would take twice as long.
FYI it's not smart to go up steep hills with just throttle too much. You'll burn out your motor much faster and may even burn it out with hardly much use to it yet. It's not said enough to ebike riders and ppl interested in it that you should use pedal assist up bigger hills. I had a Bafang 500w hub motor crunch going throttle up a 30 deg hill just throttle. Thankfully I could take it apart and get replacement parts. Which is what I like about using an ebike that uses known motor brands like Bafang since you can get any part ez. Those bikes with unbranded motors make it rough to get replacement parts.
Definitely the best e bike for the price & comes with better components too, I want one, The Junker just showed us why people que up and have to wait a month on back order for one
Better than a car imo ⚡⚡👍👍💯😁⚡⚡
The Kepler has replaced my car for getting to work and grocery store. The speed and big rack are very versitile.
@@thejunker5961 That's good because gas
Gas is to much imo. Keep it electric ⚡⚡⚡
In some situations, sure. I Love ebikes. It matters where you live though. Pertaining to weather, ebike laws(I've seen guys get 600 dollar fine for going over 25 on their ebike on videos here on YT for eg), if you want to go on dates, have a job you carry tools for, etc. It's a great second vehicle for sure. Or third if you have a family. And it's almost an investment with how much fuel is. Ups and downs.
On some motorcycles they place a good magnet under the frame to help trigger light sensors. Not sure a bike with a small magnet would work.
Good idea, I'm getting tired of going through red lights that won't change. Thanks for the idea.
@@thejunker5961 have to read up on that ... Like I say, guys on motorcycles have more area to place magnets. Now I read that people say it's a myth. 😂😂
I haven’t been on a motorcycle in years but it was called a Green Magnet and it worked. The problem riders had with it was that it would come off the bike frame on road irregularities, bumps etc. I duct taped mine to my BMW frame and had good luck with it. It was a large magnet around 20 dollars back in 2000. Nice video, I just ordered my Kepler on Saturday.
Green Light Magnet J&P Cycles 30 Dollars and that’s the original product so it’s gone up in price from 2000 when I bought mine.
I did some online research on the magnet and people have mixed results. I have some strong rare earth magnets that I will take with me on my next commute and see if it triggers the sensor.
Great video. When you get up to higher speeds, say 25mph+, are you still able to peddle and assist motor or do you feel like motor is doing all the work at higher speeds?
In gear 7, you can assist up to 40+mph. After that, its hold on for dear life.
@@thejunker5961 If you never ride off road, put some street tires on it with high pressure and you'll get much better battery life, and you'll be able to go faster.
@@Isaiiahii I've thought about it, but I've not been limited by battery life or speed. I've read some stuff that says handling is a bit different with slick tires. Right now, I'm going to ride the original set until they wear out and then consider my next tire choice.
@@thejunker5961 also tire pressure is a tradeoff between comfort/grip/efficiency.
if you put a lot of pressure on these fatties, you're missing the whole point of fat tires doing some suspension work. also it's been proven that there has been misconceptions for a very long time that skinny tires with super high pressures Did make you faster, which has been proven partially wrong. if you ride on a perfectly flat surface like a bike track, sure more pressure means less deformation and better efficiency, but as soon as you start having bumps, it can be more efficient to have less pressure and the tires working like a mini suspension that will absorb energy and release it back like a spring, as opposed to rigid tires that will make the bike bounce around and all that energy transfered to the bike is absorbed by your body, tiring you out and slowing you down
it's a bit like super stiff suspension on a car will make you feel faster, but not go faster
Which would you say is better for light off-roading such as riding on grass and dirt roads? Kepler or X-52?
Will the police give you a ticket for "eating" the red light in a bicycle? (Assuming that you take the precautions before crossing the road or intersection.)
Great video would you tell me the brand of those phone holder
GUB from the Amazons. it's nice and sturdy, made from machined aluminum. Wish it had a tilt.
The ride at that speed would get you home even faster if wasn't for the traffic light...here in Miami we don't wait for the green light if it's clear we go thru..😆
I grew up in a small town in the 80s and 90s in southeast Virginia riding my bike all over it and never acknowledging traffic rules. It was just the way it was back then. You were on a bike, traffic laws didn't apply to you. And to this day I still ride with that mindset, I just can't bring myself to obey traffic laws while on a bike :D
I obey traffic laws based on safety and whether their are police present.
Some rules were meant to be broken.
If you're a peddler who uses the throttle only to start... You should look into a middrive.
I really thought about this, but decided on the hub drive of the Kepler because of the 1000W motor. I've seen other 750W hub drives struggle up hills, the Kepler has all the power necessary. And for commuting to work, I did not want to be required to pedal if I did not want to sweat.
Thanks for the video. But sorry...unless I missed something...about a 15-20 mile range for a bike with that size battery is rubbish, I don't care how fast you're going or how many hills you're climbing.
I'm not sure I said that.... But as an engineer, I will tell you that every battery has a power capacity which translates to a maximum power output that it can achieve. This power can be delivered quickly, or over a long period of time. Many variables go into how long a battery will last, but under extreme environments, the distance traveled will vary. I'm just trying to give real world experiences to the people out there, so that they can make their own decisions. I've actually contacted a few other e-bike companies to see if they would send me an e-bike so that I could compare to the Kepler. I'm very curious to see how they would do?
@@thejunker5961 Well...I extrapolated from the stats you gave. You said you started with 80% battery, right? To extend the life by not charging it up to 100%. Then you rode about 8 miles. And putting together how much battery you had left after your round trip it seemed to fall into the 15-20 mile range, give or take.
Was your bike at 100 percent when you started? So between your commute to and from work do you think you went through over 70% of your battery?
I try not to charge to 100% to improve battery life, so I started the day at 80%. My ride to work consumed 25%. The ride home, uphill, consumed 28%. So about 50% of the battery for 7 miles, but this was at max output the whole way. When the bike is charged to 100%, my ride to work and back will usually consume 40% of the battery. At lower power output levels, I get a lot more distance.
@@thejunker5961 That’s not bad at all. I bet if you set its max speed to around 28 and did a throttle only test it would get pretty close to what the BeeCool would get.
I saw a video of a guy getting almost 40 on that, throttle only. I think it might’ve been, Citizen cycle. Maybe not with some of those monster Hills you have to deal with though.
@@RhuleBeans Yeah, I use a lot of battery because I am maxing everything out, speed and power, but only because I want to get home fast. At lower settings I know range is improved. But for my short commute its easy to set it on full blast and then charge at home.
@@RhuleBeans Yea it was Citizen Cycle. His review and their black friday sale of $200 off made me pick up the Explorer. You definitely have to charge it to 100% to get the top speed out of it. The display on mine is also about 1.5 mph off. It's still a good bike for distance though. I have a similar length commute but a few less hills and a round trip doesn't even take me down a bar. I'm getting the Kepler for speed and fun though.
@@thejunker5961 How do you know when the battery is at ~80% charge? I wish there was a charge level indicator
Going downhill, I would reduce PAS to 0, and save battery power.
Agreed, but where is the fun in that. Plus, with a 3.5mile commute each way, there is no reason for me to conserve. My goal is to get there and back as fast as possible. I plan to do a comparison video between car, regular bike, throttle only and pedal assist times to get to work.
Not "Hating" but i think your mph reading might be off, i have a Kepler and the speeds at 8:30 or even at 8:48. You're slowing down and the speeds dont seem to be 28mph while slowing down.
Maybe confirm with a phone mph app? These ebikes can read different mph when the wheel setting is set different and from different Kepler videos i've seen the wheel has been varied from 1-2"
Also could be the camera FPS it looks choppy which can be throwing me off
I've tested the speeds with a phone app and they seem accurate, other CZcamsrs have also done this. Either way, the thing is fast. It gets going and it's a little scary when you get above 32mph, at least for me.
@@thejunker5961 Well that's good that you tested it, i was just saying that for the potential of it being off. I also run a full face helmet when riding my kepler now, a bell super air 3r.
No!!300cc gas moped for that hill.too much stress on that bike.but I love my e-bike also
Is it easy to go into settings to make it that fast or does it come that way ?
It's ez. Just put in the password which I think for the Rider is 1919 and it's opens the menu to do it.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What monitor and camera is that? Looks very handy.
I got it off Amazon as a kit, paid like $50 for it. It's OK, it would be nice if it was a little brighter, but it's hard for any monitor in direct sun. The battery charge on it is great, I've have only charged it once so far.
@@thejunker5961 Is it amazon brand, or some other. I would like to get that.
@@thejunker5961 got a link you can share for the monitor ? Thanks
you call those hills then come to Vancouver I'll show you real hills
Ariel rider Customer service is the worst. I will never buy one again
Really? That sucks. My friend has a Rider and he and I love it. Let's hope he doesn't have issues. Hopefully if something does happen it's something we can fix.
