- čas přidán 22. 08. 2023
- This week we head over to the Santa Monica Triple set to see what the spot looks like today and we talk about some history of the vast number of tricks that have gone down it over the years! We also take a look at what there is to skate near by.
Edit: Jonathan Pierce did the switch front big spin not Dallas Rockvam, Jonathan was a guest trick in his part.

Casual ollie the triple set is crazy 🔥🤘
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
@@DernBrothers This thing is beastly. so much respect for a casual ollie
The camera grab was definitely the dopest trick. Can’t believe he rolled away. Sick.
Did they ever catch the camera guy?
@@doubledown8229 My guess is at some point he will drop the camera, because its too difficult to keep biking with it.
I need to know this @@doubledown8229
That camera grab was nuts.Anyone know what video was that in?
@@NORFOLKIAN bro watch it again dude on the bike went pass n grabbed the camera
Man rowley back 360 is gnarly
Ya definitely my fave and gnarly how fast he was going too
I visited this spot 2 years ago, legit mind blowing how big and crusty it is.
I remember seeing this spot in skatevideos first time when i was barely a teenager. I was clueless where it is, not that it matters to me anyways, but i knew its somewhere in US and im from Europe. Fast forward over 10 years, i was visiting LA and i recognized those sculptured poles on the landing instantly from a distance. People i was there with thought i was crazy. They just couldnt understand why the hell i was so hyped to go check out some damn STAIRS and take pictures of them, instead of the beach or the pier. Fuck that pier.
haha 😆
😂
Dude, I walked up it. Looked down and realized where I was lol I feel like cameras don't do this spot justice. It's BIG irl
this thing is so much bigger in person than it looks on camera
Well, it is a triple set
It really is huge to look at. I used to think "shit, I'd clear that" and then I went there and was like "holy crap."
There are triple sets that are small as shit. I’ve been to the Santa Monica three set and yea it’s way bigger in person. It’s unbelievable how tricks you’ve seen on video go down.
@@YouilAushana🙄
It´s just ridiculously long. It made me respect the pros even more 😁
Another awesome spot breakdown! Berrics trying to copy y’all, but you guys are way better at this. RIP Robbie McKinley btw. One of the nicest dudes that would frequent Hot Rod Skateshop. Hopefully he snuck a picnic table into heaven. 🙏
Damn when did he pass away? I remember it was only like a year ago they mentioned him in a nine club episode as one guy who quit skating too soon. I actually just watched the DC video the other day too, he’s always dapping 👊 the camera in his video parts
Edit: just googled it and as soon as I started reading the article I realized I did hear about this a while back but I guess it slipped my mind cuz they really didn’t have any details
@@RKLS90 March 28th of this year. He was such a rad skater and human being. I remember a Hot Rod demo where Dan Druff offered a shirt to the first person that could find a pro. I ran inside and spotted Robbie McKinley. He was super humble and always smiling.
@@The.Kevin.Greene u have any idea what the cause of death was?
No offence bruh but the dern channel didn't invent spot checks, 411 been doing it since they were still in diapers, before CZcams even existed, no need to be a gatekeeper
@@RKLS90 according to the internet it was another OD. So sad.
The Derns are killing it with this series. Keep it up fellas
Great vid as always! I think Cory Kennedy also switch big heeled it in a pretty sweet trailer or something
14:52 the "Do a KanaanBall!" and subsequent explosion was an awesome surprise
I told everyone I was gonna kickflip this spot. When we got there I blew my heel out doing a warm up Ollie 😅
youre such a mess
@7:30 That nollie big heelflip is so fucking clean. And that super slow mo footage is fantastic. I was watching frame by frame and theres a point where the board is upside down and hes hovering above the trucks with both feet. Just looks so cool.
Videogame type shit to be fair man
The knowledge and effort to find tricks is amazing yet again. Thanks guys.
How this channel doesn’t have 100k plus yet blows my mind. Awesome content guys keep it up! To me the barley switch hardflip ender for element world tour was always my favorite on this set. His part was so gnarly and underrated.
That is a good one for sure! Thanks for watching!
It was way ahead of its time. I think it was '99 (maybe even '98?). It took many years to catch up to that move.
This is such a great series you guys do always love them so much!
❤️
7:22. Its hidden somewhere in the middle of the video, but Nollie big heel feels like the most difficult. Having to pop nollie, rotating and catching your board blindside down the stairs...then landing fakie. Be such a hard trick to commit too. Another awesome addition to this legendary series👍
Nollie fs flip seems really awkward to travel that long with precision. Moose is always the dark horse!
Cole, 2005-2009, could probably have done ollie 360 onefoot / north. I imagine Aurelien being able to do the blizzard flip.
How about switch fs flip revert, or what the name is ... How long is that thing? Fingerflip airwalk ...
I personally think fakie 3 shuv is the hardest, it's easy on flat but I can't imagine doing one going so fast down such a long gap, there's a reason you don't see that trick down big things very often
For real man you said it perfect
@@BeVe-iu2mjFor sure, having the board spinning like that is easy on flat but it can turn ever so slightly down big shit that can have you landing primo. Crazy board control.
Such a nice serie, keep doing it guys. Show us hollywood high in the next time
You guys should do City College 7 & 12. Those stacks are legendary SD spots back in the day.
Yo i love these videos where you guys go over the history of these legendary spots! keep it up!
Another great video as expected! Thanks for the skate history!
Well researched and thorough! Dern Bros do it again.
Amazing! Thanks for this!!
Paul hart did some hard ass tricks on that. Cody macs nollie big heel is insane too
Absolutely! Both of them killed it!
Paul hart also switch frontside flipped it in the video bearly usko
Kevin Romar is a top 10 jumper. The way he just chills in the air...
Love this channel. I grew up skating hard in socal mid 90s to early 00s. These places are all very special to my heart 🖤
I lived in SaMo for a bit. I was bored one day & went there by myself, set up my iPhone 5 to self record & tried to kickflip this in 2013. It's much bigger than I thought and although I did stick one, it's just to long. I always liked skating tall and short stairs, and it's so hard to control your board going that fast. Also I am a filmer and not to good of a skater, I was just feeling my kickflips at the time and wanted to huck one for the gram. Mad props to all the legends who murdered this spot!
Another great one guys!
This is my new favorite channel. Yall really hit home with these spots. Then i is cool to see SLS recreate stuff like hubba hideout. I love that skating is getting so much underground publicity for us skaters and old heads
I’m loving these spot breakdowns
That John Getz dude was insane. He tre flipped late flipped then hardflip late flipped these 2 sets of stairs in a line years ago. Think it was a 6 and a 7, NKA filmed it
Love these skate spot vids
These spot vids are always hype
Really digging these
love that you ollied it at the end too
Lots of editing and time. Thank you for sharing this gents. Amazing job!
Incredible
I wonder if Ryan walker ever got that camera back ? That’s crazy .
Fr I wanna hear the story behind that
Lol I was wondering the same thing.
Guess we need to try to ask him lol. I need to know too. I tend to think a pro skater can catch a crackie on a bike riding with one arm. He definitely don't have the endurance to get away.
It’s those long lens angles from the top of the set showing the runway and landing that are my favorite. (Like Diego’s Nollie Tre) I’m glad y’all mentioned that restaurant at the bottom of the set. I’ve eaten there once hoping to get a good view of someone skating the set 😂😂
Love the knowledge of your videos! Im hooked
These videos are the best!
I love your spot vids so much
7:22 the speed that Cody did that Billie big heel is terrifying
Looove this part bros. What an iconic spot.
Love these. Only thing I would like to see if tricks in chronological order. Obviously would add work but would be cool to see the progression over time
Help set a budget for them to do that it be cool. I mean they already do enough research and they give the names for us to find so , it’s a win win.
That was perfect
One missed is showing Kurt Winter landing his switch bs flip, you showed his bail at the beginning, but didn’t show the land later on. His Smoke and Mirrors part was awesome and that switch bs flip was insane with the way he flicked and caught it, almost looking like he’d fall rolling away but kept it and made it really stylish.
You guy are hilarious. More spots.
The fakie 360 shuv was nuts.
So cool , 🎉
The series is just awesome! Thank you guys so much for doing this! Maybe for the future vids you could add some scenes from the top of the stair sets, like a pov you know, so people that are not there could see more real size of the sets. Everyone's got used to the classic video angles but it doesn't really give you idea how big it actually is.
Remember the famous Sears gap, ledges,, in Alhambra by Lance's pad, Cal State L.A, CNN banks, 1st interstate famous Blind Video Day or Guy's spot, and the famous car wash, 90s were awesome when sk8parks were not around l.a. Just old skol shredding to spots with the boys. Awesome VLOGs...The Penny, Wray, Cardiel, Barbee, Hill, etc...days
That pop on the full cab. Mind. Blown.
nice content very impormative, respect the OG 💪🔥
that kickflip firecracker is actually insane
Really appreciate these. So much history and progression. Crazy how this spot actually seems small now but back then it was gnarly. Still is and just shows how much progression occurred
Not small. It's doable, but still an absolute huck.
This is an amazing breakdown
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dern bros are core skateboarding. Best in class. You guys should visit Burnside in Portland, Dalton would shred it. And Lincoln City, the best slalom ever.
I saw that half rubber neck at 5:36😂, awesome video though 👏
I thought I knew my skate history but man y’all are taking me to school! Loving these videos!!
This series is dope
I love the clips of the public freaking out seeing tricks.
I liked this a lot ❤
Alan Petersen first Ollie on the Thrasher Mag cover 11/94. Bob Gnarly(Natural Koncepts) inward heeled it in 2002
Yo, good looking out on the Bob Gnarly trick.
This channel is good because it’s true to skateboarding
Edit: get my man some sun glasses lol
God damn it I'm a sucker for bad jokes and the "do a Kanaan ball" caught me off guard lol
donny barley was so sick. that switch hard flip is olllddd too
Yo Dern bros! Love what you guys are doing! Just wanted to add a few tricks to the list though
Jacob Walder switch inward heel
Andrew Pott FS bigspin
Adam Dyet nollie full cab
These are some that were done before the people you listed
Terry Kennedy heelflip
Josh Kasper hardflip
Bobby Rodriguez inward heel
Kurt Winter switch bs flip
Eric Bork switch fs flip
Some ABD’s
Cris Lesh varial flip
Cory Kennedy switch big heel (not sure if his or Derricks was first)
Also the switch fs bigspin was Jonathan Pierce and James fakie big was nollie.
Sorry guys, mega skate nerd over here! 😂
Great video
Perfect.
Thanks for watching
Spot history videos are my favorite bro!
The best skateboard Chanel ❤
Thanks!
Sick ollie
Great video!!
Please do Wilshire 15, Hollywood high and wallernberg
dope video. subscribed.
Idk how i missed this one, such a heavy spot. Arto and Rowley, Reynolds, barley really killed it back in the 90s after Kareem and Kris.
The sw front big was Jonathan Pierce, he had a few tricks in Dallas’s part in fun
Love itt
🤘🏻🤘🏻
Wild because these things are so much larger in person. Rolling up to stairs over 10 or more or of that length is wild. You roll up and your like oh sh it's way larger than I thought
Diego Najera did nollie hard flip as well! One of my favorites you didn't include was Andrew Pott's fs bigspin. Great video down memory lane my friends
Vinnie Bahn went so hard on that tre tail grab!
F’n rad!
dang, growing up in canada, long jump sets like this were my jam..being older now its still big but not like I saw it when I was a kid..the space between the stairs seemed like a desert of endless proportion, and a downhill runup? with the adrenaline hype of an audience and food at the landing? It's probably a good thing us canada boys didn't have early access to this hehe.
I like the classical music, Kanaan your vid parts are gnarly dude
Content is dope, and your all cool. Just the music man...
Love this series, please keep them coming!! [apologies if I missed it but did you mention Corey Duffell's fakie bs flip?]
shane oneil switch dub tre is the craziest trick ever down this hands down
Yeah that one is insane!
It's *Switch 360 double flip.
Don Barleys switch hardflip has to be the best trick down it next to ways front 3
Nice history reminder! That’s a nice triple, what about San Diego sports arena? That place was sick.
My personal top 3 fav trick are 1 Cody's nollie big heel, 2 nollie tre , and 3 Ollie body varial
Love this series
Cory Kennedy-switch frontside bigspin heel as well. Somewhere around 2010 or so.
We forgot about that one! I think he did it for his pretty sweet part but then it ended up not being included maybe cause it was an ABD but still such a sick one to throw that there and make it happen!
Got used for a Girl ad and his "Slice Of Life".@@DernBrothers
@@DernBrothers I think it was in the intro to pretty sweet or possibly in a trailer of sorts.
John Getz is a homie of mine! We used to snowboard when we were kids!
that lipslide by Clive Dixon was crazy. man he can chomp some rails. oh, and as for the triple set- my fave trick was probably the nollie tre, followed by the switch bs flip which Kurt Winter did and they forgot to mention despite showing the footage at the start there.
YESSSS another history spot vid from the derns!!!
Meu sonho é um dia conhecer Santa Mônica pra andar de skate❤😁🤘
Carsten Boyer did smith grind on the rail Clive lipslid on the pier, it was in a Berrics part called CB21 but the video isn't on youtube and was made private on the berrics when i searched it just now
Good video! ❤
Thank you! 🤘🏻
The cannon 😂
would LOVE to see tranquility rail in Houston texas on this! I front feebled it wayyy back in the day.
