CROWD REACTIONS TO MY BARN-FIND TURBO 2JZ-SWAPPED CHARGER!

- Episode 236 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is a fun one. After a little exhaust system work I drive my car to Caffeine and Octane in Kennesaw, Georgia, to pop the hood and find out how the crowd feels about seeing the legendary Toyota turbo inline 6 between the fenders of the most famous model of Dodge ever produced.
I call this 1968 Dodge Charger, a car that was hidden inside of a barn in Indiana for 50 years before it landed on eBay, the Death Metal Charger. Shortly after it was drug out of the barn I bought it and Tony Angelo and I got together in my basement, put a new drivetrain in the car, and drove it from Georgia to Indiana to show the original owner what we had done. He was unimpressed with the Big-Block Chrysler powered machine and so I stopped caring about having his blessing on the project. Death Metal: Phase 2 came quickly. Phase 2 involved removing the 383 V8 and replacing it with a Junkyard Toyota 2JZ GE engine sourced from a junkyard.
Jay Meagher from Real Street Performance met me and Tony at Kevin Smith's shop in Gainsville, Florida and together we replaced the NA head gasket with a factory gasket meant for a turbo engine. We also replaced the stock cams with Brian Crower turbo-spec units. The engine received a Precision Turbocharger, an eBay-sourced aluminum intake manifold, and a custom wiring harness to connect a Motec EFI system.
The engine is backed by a Silversport Transmissions Tremec Six Speed Magnum XL transmission and Mantic twin-disc clutch pack. The rearend is a Quick Performance custom 9 inch with a Strange center section. Wilwood disc brakes are found at all four corners of the car and the front suspension is from QA1.

"It's a diesel", hilarious 😂
Needs a Cummins style valve cover!
😅
It just goes to show that half the people that attend these shows know nothing about cars.
He'll never live that down
I loved how absolutely certant people were that it is a diesel or specifically a cummins.
We’ll, it looks like I was half-asleep when I uploaded this video. Sorry about the missing audio. It was there during the rough edit of the video but much like my snap-on 12pt socket set, it’s unexpectedly gone missing. Sorry Everyone!
Ask QA1 if you can get a allocation for one other suspension kits and do a giveaway! 👍
FinnegansGarage Mike don't sweat it none of us are perfect ,but I have worked with some people who thought that they were.
Time to fire the editor LOL
👍😎👍
Stuff happens to all of us 😂.
Hahaha I thought thermostat was a problem with my Internet. Hahaha
Props to the guy for figuring the catch can so quickly
Right? That was impressive.
you have to be incredibly imaginative to acknowledge that someone like finn would build such a terrible catch can lmfao
i was genuinely impressed that he spotted it. most people don't get it.
@@FinnegansGarage you have a scammer pretending to be you
@@onemanteam3414 they all do
You should totally do a video of your wife running us through all your projects and her thoughts on it.
I would rush to watch that video so fast!!! Mike you gotta make this happen brother!
Dude...next upload featuring a very scruffy Mike, shortly after waking up in 'Death Metal'....
I also wanna see Mrs Finnigans reaction to all the junk
What do you want him to get a divorce it would be funny but no way😂
Without prompting her which are his projects and not ones that he is "storing for a friend"!
I’m going to flat out say it, Death Metal was so far gone from being restored and he made it more unique. I personally love it.
yup, hard to wreck something that was for all purposes destroyed.
The same people that can't tell a 2JZ from a 6BT will still argue with you on the internet!
The fact so many people recognize the car makes it even more special and you can never get rid of it.
I just think the amount of attention that "garbage" got was absolutely hilarious! With all of those exotics parked around, then you turn the corner, and there's Death Metal, sitting there in all its fabulousness! Thanks for the video, Mike! ✌️❤️🙂🇨🇦
What is great is seeing that you are storing the Cressida and Mustang from Austrasia for the Bennie's. Not many people will catch that. I watch BCW all the time.
You have good eyes! Lol
I saw em both out at sick week. Instantly recognized the Barra powered Cressida lol
How many vehicles/boats do you own?? We need a Finnegan's "Cribs" episode of this apparent warehouse you have full of toys!
First thing I noticed in that garage. The Cressida was an awesome car.
Not a Cressida, it's a Cresta. Originally built by Mighty Car Mods. Great to see both Barra cars have safe storage between events while in the US.
Its crazy how confident people talk about stuff they have no clue about
They are "car guys".
Fake it til ya make it buddy, do it with confidence and they'll never know
Been to enough car shows, sitting & watching people stroll by & comment so confidently about things they got totally wrong, that it isn't a surprise.
I want to laugh ssooo badly... but then I remind myself that over 90% of men now days have no clue what or where a spark plug is on ANY engine and then it just makes me cry... then someone goes and says a stripped down 2jz looks like a diesel and I can't help but roll my eyes as I instantly notice all the ways it looks nothing like a diesel that's 2x the size lol
@@theoriginaljoke3.148lol can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, but if not, we always know when people are full of sheet. Some of us might be polite and not call you out on your bs in front of a bunch of people, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know. And we all make fun of you as soon as you leave lmao. I don’t get it, like it’s not a big deal if people don’t know jack about cars, but acting like you do when you don’t is the most annoying thing ever, it drives me nuts. That’s when we just start making stuff up and telling you about the time we swapped a 110 gigawatt flux capacitor into our twin supercharged 2-stroke 292 big block diesel stroker and went 23.40 in the 8th mile. Best day of my life!
I really liked how chill this episode was! It doesn't always have to be +20k racing engines and other high-end stuff (not that I don't love that also), now it felt just like another day at your average garage. And I definitely laughed my ass off with all the diesel comments, great idea with the gopro!
Have you flipped through a QA1 catalog recently?
@@JCWren I meant more the "not finding the right hardware so this will do" side of things

Heck Ya!!
“That’s not a V8!?” “That’s a diesel” 😂
I see Benny's 1200hp cresta and the barra fox body chillin in the background 😎 love watching the show from Australia Mike 😉👍
I love the clip at the end Mike, shows that you’re a real human.
Yeah I dunno personally I never make mistakes. It’s a sign of weakness. Gods country up this way. Great hills you’ll see them and just want to walk up them.
@@karenthomson9749 cool story bro
@@karenthomson9749 lmao
Mike you're a maniac, don't ever change. I was laughing out loud on a Sunday morning. Thanks.
Rock On Mike, Car runs & drives and makes you smile, that's all that MATTERS!! Cheers from a long time fan and hoser from up north eh?
This thing just reeks of digging through my hot wheels and matchbox cars when I was a kid. We all had the one beat up and loved. I love this car
"The more I look the more questions I have"
This Charger will always be a classic case of:
"More questions than answers!"
"The more I look the more questions I have" must be the best summary of Mike's adventures and career. Thank god he takes us with him on the ride.
Death Metal was an unknown pile of rusty parts rotting in a barn. You guys breathed new life into it, experimented, had fun and made it famous in the process.
There are tons of restored classics with thousands of man hours, their owners' pride and joy... that they are scared to drive. Death Metal is a unique, one of a kind beater project car and that's what makes it special.
Mr. B. Here ! Mr. F, your vehicle should get awarded The Frankenstein Award of all time ; what can you said about a vehicle that has a little of everything . Johnny Cash said it well A Peace at a Time ! LOL ! Best of luck with it , and your family who has the courage to ride with you ! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 love it !
This was hilarious. Never even hit my mind to take Death Metal to a car show. Love the reactions from people. Even the ones that were so wrong! Was great to see how many realized it was your car and knew exactly what it is. Have a fantastic day!
One of the best episodes you'e made. A little wrenching, a little showing people your (well, mostly) handiwork. The reactions were priceless! Hope you waited before leaving to put the extension back on and put on a show for the crowd!
Sadly no. They ask that no one two-step, loud rev or basically any kind of hooning. Place is crawling with cops and would have one on him if he tried any "funny business"
@@joshcummings2570 Ok. Good to know.
You brought it back to life!!!!!! It's yours you drive it, the hell with the arm chair quarter backs!!!
That's one of the best things about car shows; especially when you're young - trying to flex what you think you know. It's all hilarious, and even people who know their stuff get caught in that talk. Thanks for that little clip at the end Fin; we all start not knowing much of anything.
Love the episode Mike!! And absolutely loved the camera on the car at the show. Pole barn did the same with the holey goat and it's great to see people's reactions. Keep up the awesome work my friend. I'm sad to see you're not doing faster with finnegan anymore, but you can't chose a better reason for bowing out. Family always comes first. 🙏
I'd watch video after video of people's candid reactions to sketchy roadkill-esque builds at high-end car shows. That's content gold, honestly. And, for the record, if I didn't know this car already, I would have no idea what that engine was!
Like I was told growing up may not like someone's build but respect it because that's the dream they had
Ima use this as a soapbox moment, we have an opportunity to be a shining light of unity in this world. Respect all builds.
I love how this video feel. Feels like OG roadkill with a bit more finesse
Keep up the great work! Glad you're getting your son involved
Lol, the moving blankets were protecting the headers from Death Metal, not vice versa. That car is a glorious pile and I appreciate it!
Love the grinder safety bit..... then procedes to use it without the guard. I can honestly say I have NEVER found the guard getting in the way that I couldn't solve with moving it round or repositioning.
This video made me smile, love the reactions.
Death metal charger is definitely a "different" concept but looks fun!
Loved them pointing out the new/nice suspension and than the rest of the car. I always return to Roadkill episode 23 (General Mayhem) "We are gonna put nice shiny aftermarket parts on that crud right there".
I think you've created a true piece of automotive art. Its art because its thought provoking and has people second guessing themselves. It gives the automotive design team behind fury road a run for their money.
Nothing better than an angry 2jz, just waiting for you to make a toyota mini truck with a 2jz in it and run 8's :D
I think you’d like this car a lot more with a smaller, more responsive turbo. At only 420whp you could put something on that’s much more lively down low.
Definitely. Could even go with a factory turbo from one of the various twin scroll inline 6s out there. Adopt a pulse style manifold and it would drive beautifully.
I would never believe it’s to make fun, genuinely to get peeps reactions. You usually want to know what they think if you have something unique. Good episode. 👍🏻
I fell in love with that car and it’s sound when you did the 1st vid burning rubber a while back. I could be blind and hear that thing and get goose bumps and smile so big I’d dislocate my jaw lol
You know. A 12valve might not be a bad idea for the car I know you love the 2j though if you ever want something different in the car I'd suggest that. I could see that being fun
Wait, did Benny Cressida park at your shop?
Life is, sometimes, far TOO funny !! Definitely love the editing of real confusion, lol! AND, why not be able to just have fun !
Thanx !
Thanks for Bringing it out Mike. It's always good to see your cars in the flesh.
So many think it's diesel
Lmfao
***Sees inline 6 with a giant Turbo***
"Must be a diesel."
With spark plugs throttle body and dohc lmao.
jesus eh no one knows therr motors omg diesil dont have spark plugs
Hmm Maybe he should diesel swap it 🤔
No audio from 0:50 to 1:57.
I thought my phone was tripping lol😅
Man I love this kind of swap.
2 entirely different times and cultures combined in one machine.
The sound of that car is just amazing.
No sound bro
Life's not permanent!! Play with your toys!! Big difference in bringing a trailer queen or a super fun beater to a show. I have had more fun driving and playing with my toys than looking at them or hauling them around.Enjoy what ya got while you have it. Widow maker heart attack at 36. Never know when the ride's over!!
The essence of hot-rodding, using what you have! Great stuff!!!!
I get similar reactions to my 2JZ swapped Studebaker. The young are curious since they don't know what it is, but once I say 2JZ they are all on board! The old are happy to see a car they forgot about back on the road but are sometimes puzzled about the Japanese engine under hood. I have gotten a few purists who call it a rice rocket, but honestly the @JZ was the best choice. My Lark is originally a 6-cylinder car, and I wanted to get it back to being an inline 6 but with the exception of the GM Atlas, all American inlines are pretty much heavy, tractor based lumps. The Barra is too big and not nearly as easy to procure being non-US market. For $200 from a PnP yard, I have what is arguably the most iconic and reliable inline 6 ever made. It rebuilt easily, makes 3 times the power of the original flathead and now a car I've lugged around for MY ENTIRE LIFE, is back on the road making me and others smile!
I love it when the Charger gets some love.
That 2JZ life!!! Thank God you aren't going to change that sweet ride!!
Bless you Mike Finnegan. Keep doing what you love and makes you happy!!! Don't let your haters keep you down
i tottally get the "what is it??" engine question... even though i've been around cars and selling parts for 40 + years!! Did not think for a minute you were trying to embarass anyone or anything like that!! keep up the builds man!! love it!!
absolutely a classic .I would not be asking alot of those folks for car help ..but I wouldn't be able to workout what's going on either .love it
I’m a MoPpar guy so in my humble opinion, you did not ruin your Charger. It was ruined before you got it! It's all about the fun ...
This is the huge & fun part of building any project car- the randomness driving down the roads, & the random reactions everyone has of your project build.
🤟🏼😄🤟🏼, i like the one older dude said: "the car's too far gone to restore, so just way not build something fun & enjoyable out of it." 😆 i can see if someone were to take a glance at it how they might think is was cummins swapped.
It's awesome love watching people try and figure it out
That was pretty cool, it’s always entertaining when you get to hear comments, often when I am adjusting my clutch I hear all kinds of funny stuff, awesome video!
"The more I look the more questions I have."
Oh my god, I had to laugh out loud at this one! The reactions of the crowd was just something else... 😂😂😁😁🤘🤘
Really cool. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Great reactions and love from the crowd.
Right on Mike the reaction from the crowd was awesome.
Really fun & cool. I enjoyed all the different answers to the engine question.
I think what the vid shows is how much people appreciate a car they like. The care doesn't need to be pristine, or chromed to the hilt. People like cars that are cool, and it doesn't matter at what state of repair, or disaster, they are in.
It's a work of automotive art. You are the artist.
Thanks for sharing.
A 2JZ diesel? That’s a new one on me! Fun family day at the car show.
Love how the pile draws a crap load of attention. Mama’s clean Elcomino sitting right next to it got minimal love. Lol
I love it! Keep on building the unique builds lol
HAY FIN... Ever see Leo's street interviews?
Sort of the same candid funny.
Best to you Scott 🏁
I really like this! Some people just can't get over something different!! I was happy to see Benny's Cressida and the Mustang are in good hands and stored safe! Finn you really need to look over his engine! Those straight 6s are just SICK!
"Fresh paint causes stress" I can't remember where I heard that, but it's so incredibly true! 😎
@29:29 man, this thing rolls coal right up over the hood… bruh… 2j’s don’t “roll coal”… but the thought is there… 😹🤜🤛 nothing but love man. Nothing but love. 🤘😎🤘
Death Metal is a unicorn that is so wrong but so right too. Thanks for bringing us along!
Best Car Show comments ever, love the Camera catching the Einsteins of the Future being the Masters they will never be .
Watching people's reactions to the car was a blast! It's anthropology, basically! Great stuff!
love it ! love roadkill and finnegans's garage.
I think that’s awesome how everyone one just loves it. And some of those faces of people who knew it was yours was awesome to see.
To keep a wheel from becoming a death wheel also check the manufacturing date, which is on every cutting wheel, and keep them in a low humidity climate.
Thats what i like about you Mike, you remembered everyone at the end that its not to make fun of people, its to have fun together enjoying the build. And like you say, if its not on your radar, its not your fault for not knowing about it. Im sure the guys that commented that its a diesel, its because of the flap but also, they're probably not interested in 2jz's to begin with. Not their if they havent heard about it. Great guy and great content! Cant wait to see what you do next!
You made the car a conversation piece. Which is exactly the right thing to do. It is so clapped out its not worth trying to make it right! It's perfect 👌
Is that Benny's Cresta in the back? Love it!!!
loved it a ton. unbelievable and super unique. so unique 🤘
I happened to be in the area visiting family all the way up from FLorida and went to the show specifically to see this car. But got there too late, couldn’t find you and only heard it and saw it leave. When you first made this Frankenstein, I didn’t like it, but now I love it. It’s such a different setup and that’s what makes it great!
Enjoyed this episode, it was fun!! You Rock Mike!!😉👍
How cool! The mighty car mods now Benny's custom works Cressida sat in Finnegan's Garage. Oh and the cheeky Barra Mustang
The camera on the hood footage was priceless!
All those hyper-dollar rides, and the Death Metal Charger turns up and is the center of attention. :D
Glad we finally got sound
OMG I love the 2J Cummins 😂 nice work Mike
Great episode!!! Loved how you warned us about putting rotating death wheel on the table and ruining the blade right before you did it yourself 😂😂😂 But as you say: "Do as i say not as i always do!"
A great episode Finnegan, it was fun checking out people's reactions
Enjoyed watching Mike 👍
At the 24m mark I almost lost my mind 😱 that was painful to watch LOL I'm gonna save you a lot of time 😁A package has been shipped to you TODAY sir. #knkut #TheHoleSolution
I freaking love death metal. Keep rolling Fknn. Nice work mate. Cheers
Really cool, just a fun ride.
Love it!!!! Spontaneous engineering.....👌🏻👍🏻
@@whats_17 Good morning Mr. Finnegan. I just gotta say, I like the way you think 🤔 when an issue needs attention, 💥 boom!!! You nail it... I had a chevette that I had put a small block in, years ago. I used front motor mounts out of a 55 Bel-Air and an old bumper jack from a 72 Caprice for a cross member. But that's the beauty of making use of what you have laying around, and it serves it's purpose!! 👍🏻 You have a great day my friend. I would love to hang out with you and your friends, just for a day... Faster is always not fast enough!!!! 😜
I absolutely loved this video brother thank you.
That... That. is.... AWESOME!
