1,300HP WITHOUT NOS, TURBOS OR A BLOWER! PART 1 OF 3: RACING A 10.5L JET BOAT!

- It's been six years since I've attended a drag boat race and 10 years since I drove a jet boat at a National Jet Boat Association event. Episode 219 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is Part 1 of a 3 Part Series about my first weekend back behind the wheel of a real drag boat. Over the next three days I'll drop the complete series of videos on this channel. It's my Thanksgiving holiday gift to you guys; three videos in three days about the highs and lows and the ups and downs about racing my latest purchase, a carbon fiber jet boat.
This is a 2016 Ralls Precision Machine Cheyenne jet boat and what makes this thing unique is that Andy Ralls, cnc-machined all of the aluminum hardware on this boat to be as light as possible. He also had E-Ticket Boats in Lake Havasu, Arizona, laminated the hull entirely from carbon fiber. KMG Boats painted the red, black and gray hues, while Marine Performance Design blueprinted the Dominator jet drive. The boat is powered by a naturally aspirated 632ci, 10.5 liter aluminum Big Block Chevy engine that produces 1,300hp without nitrous, or turbos or a supercharger. It was originally built by Jim Guthrie and recently freshened up by Mike Miller Racing Engines. The engine features CP Pistons, Carrillo connecting rods, Total Seal piston rings, Dart Big Chief cylinder heads, a Dart tall deck aluminum block, a Hogan's tunnel ram with billet runners, and Gen 3 Holley Dominator carburetors. The electronics consist of an MSD Digital 7 ignition box and a Jesel front drive distributor. The boat was wired by Zack Rauscher.
This boat has ran 132mph with an ET of 5.8 seconds on a 1,000ft drag boat track.
Stay tuned because tomorrow I'll drop Part 2 of this adventure, which will show you what went right and wrong during qualifying at the National Jet Boat Association Final event of 2022!
Thanks for watching and as usual, thanks for the support! Did you know that I have a brand new FSM Shirt design? Go here to check it out: www.fsmgarage.com/ - Auta a dopravní prostředky
As I watch this I can't help having a huge grin om my face from the sheer joy Finnegan has with this boat. His love of boating is incredibly contagious...and I've never been speed boating but now I sure want to...
I love how his plans changed on a dime! Ask him why, YOLO!!!
I've lay awake at night thinking about driving this boat ever since I bought it.
I grew up with Drag boats at Marine Stadium in Long Beach love and miss it so stoked for Finnegan you can see the pure joy and buying that boat and hanging with his buddies give them hell love y’all
Yep, when going fast on water… lots of things can make you stop quick, in like on land there is no rolling.
Its so sketchy going that fast riding onto of the water but soooo freaking fun cus it's so sketchy. Never been boat racing but been on some fast boats before. Jet skis are wild too.
Mike, see that you just used the phrase "game on" that's exactly the name I wrote for the new boat in a previous post! It's a natural progression for naming. Looking forward to the series of episodes! Take care. DB Long Island, NY. Ps:Yes we have drag boats and gassers here.
^This
*Game On!*
I love how Mike try’s to rationalise his purchase. We’ve all been there :)
Right? He said I sold my boat and I was gonna be out for good, but he was looking at boats online the day after he sold his lol.. Nothing like money burning a hole in your pocket.
Hey Finn, beautiful boat mate. Down here in Australia out black widow spiders have a red back, being Aussies we got real inventive and called them Redbacks. That top shot of the boat with the stripe looks just like one. If the boys haven't given her a name yet, I reckon Redback would be a fitting name.
Mike you are one class act. I met you years ago on a trip to Mopars at the Strip when when you guys took the Super Bee out. I road tripped the Orange Cuda with you from Barstow. My son Jake and I have followed you ever since. Love this series as I gives the back story of what goes on in the pits between rounds. Keep it up.
When my Papa was still with us, he worked law enforcement for 32 yrs. Retired outta Water Patrol. He worked on Barkley and Kentucky Lakes. They'd have jet boat races on KY lake every year and he'd always work em'. Always loved hearing the stories and getting to go out w/him on occasion as a child. Glad you're helping keep the sport alive Mike!
Awesome to see great friends helping out! 629 crew are good people !
Love it! Thank you for taking us along for the ride!
So friggin’ cool, thanks for bringing us along!
10/10 Mike this is some of My favorite content of Yours, as Your passion for boats & boat racing really show through. Thanks for sharing it with us!
What an incredible boat. It's got such a beautiful paint scheme and classy accents with the chrome. I love how purpose built it is for racing too with the seat placement and all the forethought to make it as light as possible. I can't wait to see you having a blast racing this beast. Good luck and I hope it always runs safe for you.
Excited for part 2 and 3, your attitude and enthusiasm is always inspiring, thanks for the vids
Dude, what a difference in production quality!
Due to disability I had to close my machine shop. You are one of the few channels that is truly legit, real, and no matter the outcome always feel good with positivity. Health and wellness for you and yours. And an epic thank you
Congrats on the new boat. Love watching all the stuff you do, thanks for that. Can't wait to watch the next 2 videos. Keep up the awesome work.
That boat is sick! I can clearly see why people love the sport. Horse power, beautiful lake and people! Looks like a good time to me!
Your jetboat drag racing videos may spark a renaissance for the sport...
So awesome to see you at the drag strip Finn. The boat looks amazing and knowing you, you'll have a lot of fun and go really fast. Cheers mate
There is no greater feeling in the world and back in your jet out in the water starting it up and when the pump finally catches prime the boat shifts forward on the trailer and the engine loads and you know your ready to rip! 👌🏼 congrats bud! Sick boat! Sad to see the placecraft go but this this is sick!
You look so comfortable in that environment! Congratulations on your new boat!!!
Man!! Thanks for doing these 3 days in a row... Thats awesome!!!
What a lucky man! Hard work and Hard play and most importantly an understanding Wife nothing like it! Thanks again for the great content for all of us old racers who live vicariously through your journey back to racing.
God bless you! 🙏🏼 Stay safe.. keep the wet side down.👍
Love the new boat brother! Awesome video. Can't wait to see #2!
Beautiful looking boat. She sounded really great on that last shot of you accelerating away from the start line rope. Great bunch of guys assisting you too. That extra money you had from selling “Game Over” was obviously burning a hole in your pocket. Good Luck.👍👍🇨🇦
Seems like a lot of trouble. Bust Out Another Thousand!
That’s a hell of a name for a boat
Black Friday
Thinking fruit cake flyer !

You could call it 1UP. A new life after game over, also forgot to say, I absolutely love you content and your giddy attitude towards everything in life. Keep doing you!
This is too perfect
1up is a good one. I was also thinking of Bonus Time or Power Up.
Thanks, looking for next race drop today.

Whats DM the telegram?
I'm an OLD ANALOG GEAR HEAD.
Best to you Scott 🏁
This is an epic series!! I can’t wait to see the next two videos!! Glad you’re back doing what you love finnegan!
Now that's good clean American fun. I like the simplicity of your boat. Less wrenching more fun. Thank you for your time.
Excellent video, thank you Mike.
You just took me back! My dad lives in Bakersfield and I got stationed at Beale Air Force base north of Sacramento for my first 8.5 years. I spent MANY weekends at Lake Ming ripping his 1970’s V-Drive Sanger flat bottom across the backside of that lake. That was between 2000-2008 and he still has it. It’s got a big block built by Dale Lambert who was a legend of an engine builder/tuner in the Bakersfield hot rod/drag boat scene.
Enjoy the new boat and can’t wait to see more liquid quarter mile content!
GREAT VIDEO MIKE!!!! I LEARNED A LOT ABOUT DRAG BOAT RACING!!!! THANKS FOR SHARING!!! BEST OF LUCK RACING ON SATURDAY!!!!
LOVE the boat racing content. Watching your old boat racing videos got me into boating.
So glad you’re back on the strip! Been waiting for this for years now.

A beautiful boat, and a bunch of great friends, congrats ! 👏
Used to run drag boats at Long Beach Marina and lake ming in the early seventies with a Sanger pickle fork called motherforker. Gene Palmer was the owner and driver. I built the boat and the engine. Had lots of fun
Crazy Wayne Cronan
Not a boat guy but I love seeing finnegan race jet boats. Hope this jet boat brings you years of joy Mike!
Watching your jet adventures makes me want to get into the sport. Cant wait to add the jet boat races to the list of drag races we go to!
I wore Red Back boots for over 20 years... until I got neuropathy in my feet.
Wow beautiful boat, Yep I was here watching. Yeah I just love hearing the motors run, I’ll be following for more
My hat is off to the brave soul that loaned Finnegan a truck!! LOL
the quality of this video is top tier
Very happy for you!
Great episode, really looking forward to the rest👍
Never have been a drag boat guy, but after watching this, I sure am thinking about getting one!
That’s what I love about motor sports. The mate ship and everyone helping each other 🍻🇦🇺
Great video Mike! Cant wait for more!😃
Love the laid back vibe to this video
This is the early Christmas present I didn’t know I needed
Happy Thanksgiving to you and the Finnegan family. And to all the guys and families helping you there and their families
happy thanksgiving to you, too.
this video made me so happy, thank you
Congratulations on the new boat looks awesome.
1976 Camaro. At least 16 years old. Mike born at least by 1960. I never would have guessed. He looks younger than that despite the graying beard. A lot of guys start the gray in their 40’s. Great video and exciting trip. 👍
That is a beautiful boat! Good color combo!
Awesome love the boat learned a lot
Very cool! Hope you can get this boat dialed in and qualified OK!
I'm out here in Lake Havasu, so no stranger to fast boats here! Thanks man!
that one hell of a boat fin wish you all the luck with it.god bless and be safe
I vote to name it "Game On"!
I love. Every. Video. This. Man. Does. ,, smart smooth , calm. A real talent. A great. Man's. Teaching. Skills
Personally I prefer cars but this is so interesting to see what else is out there.
It's like a documentary the way it's been edited
Awesome video Mike ..
I used to go to alot of the NJBA and IHBA drag boat races in Socal in the early 90's . My favorite events were Lake Ming and Puddingstone lake
I used to go to Castaic for boat drags
Go get em Mike!
Mike this was a great video can’t wait to see this ripper again
You go Mike!!!
Nice boat, keep putting boat stuff on love it.
I laughed when you said in the intro ... I am doing for you guys. Yeah right ...
When I was a kid growing up in the 70's, family friends had a 20' jetboat with an Olds 455. We had a pontoon with a 50 horse Evinrude that burned more oil than gasoline. I would go tubing behind our boat and thought it was great. But when I was asked if I wanted to go tubing behind the jetboat, I was like "sure. How much different can it be?" Whoa Nellie. It literally depanted me. We never did find my trunks and I spent the rest of the day with a beach towel wrapped around my chubby lily white ass. Every time I see a jetboat now it makes me think of that. There's fast, and then there's FAST. That string inside the waistband? Tighten it up!
@Max Power That's exactly what it was. I was a tractor tube with about six patches. You held the tow rope, you didn't tie it to the tube. So half your body was in the water and your arms were stretched out in front of you. Now that's interacting with the water!
Awesome Mike well done. I had a chuckle when you went to remove that water bypass with the little hand allen key and I saw how tight the cap screw was, the video then cuts to you with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and extension. Give it hell!
GAME ON! Last was game over and you even said game on. So… GAME ON!
Woo, that's badass! Congratulations on getting your unicorn.
worst day of racing will always beat the best day at work, its even better when work and racing coincide together!
Awesome new ride Mike!
Really, really good stuff....
This is so great!
If this is the new style of videos here, I could not be more excited to support this channel.
I'm not a big boat guy, but I still enjoy the boat content. Well done.
hell yeah, some black friday entertainment just in time!
Mike you already named it, you said "Game On" when you got to the lake and it's the perfect name as a continuance for Game Over.
Man I love this chanel and jet boats I bought 3 after watching your channel your comments (life is to short) bit me! thanks for the fun!
Such a beautiful boat! There's only one thing I like better than drag racing and that's drag boat racing!
Diggin' the boat content Mike.
Mike, This is by far "The Best" video episode that I've ever seen, of yours. It has the look of a well produced product for television. That coupled with your natural easy going sense of humor has made this so very much fun to watch. Big props to your friends who also double as your crew. These guys are studs. I've LOVED jet boating for 40 years and this all reminds me of great times with my buddies back in the day. Thanks for taking us along for the ride and good luck with the new boat (It Is Super Bitchin) as you dive head first into 3 classes of California Jet Boat Drag Racing! PS, That little Abigail is a sweetheart. I'm Stoked for episodes 2 and 3.
>It has the look of a well produced product for television.
What? No it doesn't. Some of the *editing* has the feel of a television production. The actual look is really, really rough because of the vast differences between the cameras they filmed on.
There's only so much you can do to correct the color and exposure, but I'm not sure if anybody even tried. I'm not upset about it because filming to production to release is happening really quickly for this series, but they really need to set up some color and exposure correction presets in the editing software to at least get the cameras in roughly the same ballpark. Like, nobody is saying "go buy a triple trackball color grading control surface," but c'mon, at least pull up the adjustment window and give the washed out camera some tweaks to bring it closer to the nicer footage.
Side note: good audio quality is much more important than good video quality on CZcams. People will accept that one camera looks kinda weird and crappy compared to the other shots, but nobody will accept the "narrator" jumping between a whisper and ripping your speakers apart, or just going silent because somebody forgot the audio for 45 seconds.
@@DonOblivious Okay then. I guess I will just enjoy it as it is. And I DID enjoy the video. I am looking forward to episodes 2 and 3 Finn. Have fun with the new Drag Boat!
@@DonOblivious I thought it was produced better then 98% of the content on CZcams. You're just being a tool....
Loved the use of PVC pressure test caps on the exhaust
Miss hanging at the lake
Glad you got to go chill with old friends and hit the skinny pedal
Wow ; looks like a great boat ! A few glitches but you are having fun ,obviously. I am looking forward to the rest of these videos. Ps; drag boat racers are a little crazy (lol) . Many thanks for the video.
Mike you tease 🤣 congratulations on the new boat. She looks like a real slick boat
Hell yeah Mike damn good content good luck buddy
I was born and raised in SoCal, left when I was 40 in '92 and the only thing I miss about the place is the Mexican food and the Seafood restaurants on the beach.
Yes sir, I lived in San Diego 2000-2004 and I really miss the Mexican and the Seafood also. I stayed at my brothers in Pacific Beach for the first 8 months or so. There are so many really good places to get Mexican food and I'm making myself hungry as I type!
simplicity is good beautiful boat
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Literally the best gearhead channel on CZcams.
Thats what I'm talking about. LETs go baby
Beautiful boat
