In this episode, we track down some of the best American handbuilt bikes at The Pro's Closet. (Sorry, most of them aren't for sale!) We talk about what makes handbuilt bikes so special. And then, we ask, what REALLY IS a handmade bike? Is it all just an illusion?

Dave Kirk, who made many of the racing Serrottas, and still makes excellent bikes
Jeff Lyon, Mark Nobillette, Waterford, Colnago, Rossin, Fitz, Weigle, Pegorretti, Merckx, Concorde, Bill Holland, Della Santa, so many, etc.
A Brit who immigrated to the US by the name of Dave Moulton made top notch hand built frames under the Fuso brand
I’ve got an ‘86 Fuso with full Campy SR. Super bike, super fun. For a short time Dave Moulton built frames at/for Madison.
At 6:10 the lower race on the Campagnolo headset on the Cunningham was drilled out by Charlie to facilitate a Grease Guard grease port, this was before the introduction of the WTB Chris King Grease Guard headsets.
Just sold my 2003 J.P. Weigle custom steel road bike. Tough decision to sell it but it was hardly ridden. The new owner appreciates it as much as I did. A work of art.
I have a custom bike from Echelon Cycle Works. It was a guy in Pawcatuck, RI that I found on the web in around 2005. He doesn't seem to exist anymore. Anyway, I met him and he measured me up for my custom frame, custom paint. It's built with Campagnolo Centaur components. It's a great bike that I love to ride. Let me know if you want a photo. It's lugged steel, btw.
Which hand-built bikes are my favorite?
^Klein. (the top-of-the-line are very, very good).
*Buchanan (picks up where Klein left off).
*Trecia (quite possibly the ultimate).
Always dug what Paul Sadoff does with Rock Lobster.
Peter Mooney (just retired from building sadly) is a criminal omission. I've had the pleasure of riding a few of his bikes. I'd link pics, but youtube likes to nix those.
Second generation WTB Rollercam Brakes @ 6:10.
Too many (including Serotta), but Seven gets cred for still being there and doing an incredible job.
Old School? My two faves are 'Frank the Welder' in aluminum and Tom Teesdale in steel.
Andy Gilmour of Tucson, AZ should be at the top of your list. Hundreds of frames built with incredible paint jobs. Hands down the best.
Peter Johnson.
Bill Stevenson. Davidson. Paul Brodie.
Love my Hans Schneider!

How did I know the tolerances are up to snuff.Bikes have become like watches.Hyper expensive bling machines
And has it really made racing any better or more interesting than it was in the Merckx/Gimondi days?
Roland Della Santa?
