  • Pokemon Sword and Shield have been analyzed, discussed, and critiqued heavily since their release, however there is something about the games that no one is mentioning that is one of the best parts about the titles. Today, we're going to be looking at the amazing message of Pokemon Sword and Shield that no one is talking about, and explain how profound and prevalent within the games this message truly is.

    Also ms. Opal: purple is my favorite color

    • @onijester56
      @onijester56 Před 4 lety +8

      In terms of color, I would place Bede's wardrobe as a red-purple, potentially Magneta or Fuchsia. This might clock it in as a darker/redder shade of "pink", but also fits neatly as "purple" fashion-wise.
      In fact, we see this with the notably "carnation"/"rose-pink" design of the Fairy-type gym outfit. No doubt, that's pink. Likewise, we see no-doubt purple with Opal's indigo (possibly intended to be a dark violet?) boa. And Bede is somewhere between the two.
      -----
      And yes, I realize before submitting that I have magenta misspelled. But magneta sounds like an awesome color, so you're stuck with it. :P

      You bring up a great point though. Hop wants to be a professor by the end, right? So if it was built up way better, it could be the message of ‘You might not be the best at everything, but focus on your own talents. On what makes you special.’ Could’ve been a good message for kids. Now the build-up was a bit meh and repetitive and the conclusion was rushed. If only the writing was better. Then again, the game was rushed as heck. Too bad.

For example, the obvious, Leon passing the title of champion down to you, Marnie and bede both becoming gym leaders after their brother and mentor respectively. Best gir- I mean Sonia becoming a professor. And unexpected change like when hop becomes Sonia’s assistant.

    There is also when picking your starters, I know technically Leon picked the last one. What everyone saw was the champion taking the Pokémon strong type wise against you. But, another way to look at it is he took the Pokémon that had a type disadvantage against his brother Hop. He took the Pokémon his brother would have an easier time overtaking if they battled each other.

    Tbh this is a great video. I actually realised there were a lot of family ties in this game, but I thought of it as a message to younger people to be the leaders of the future, and that gamefreak implies that the future depends on us. You know, examples of this are Marnie (became the gym leader replacing her older brother), Sonia (replaced Magnolia as the professor), Bede (who kinda got adopted by Opal and became a gym leader himself), and to a certain extent Hop (who became the lab assistant) and maybe even Gordie following his mom's footsteps. That's just me thinking tho

      Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking throughout the video! Family is just one of many themes applied to the major takeaway from Sword & Shield: our collective responsibility to pave the way for those who come after us. It applies to every passing of the torch you mentioned, but it's also an important part of understanding Chairman Rose's best and worst character traits. Despite having roughly a thousand years left to plan for Eternatus' reawakening, he chose to tackle the issue here & now so future generations could sleep easy knowing the Darkest Day had already been averted & Galar's power source would remain secure. Unfortunately he didn't trust anyone else would bother helping his cause unless he took drastic measures.

    i'm not sure if you're aware of zacian's hero of many battles form's pokedex entry in shield, but it says "This Pokémon has slumbered for many years. Some say it's Zamazenta's elder sister-others say the two Pokémon are rivals."
    zacian and zamazenta being siblings could very well be a real part of sword and shield. unfortunately, this is the only mention of the legendaries being related, but i personally like to believe that they're siblings in some way.
    this also means that there's a possibility the two pokemon are just rivals, but siblings can be rivals, too!

    "Family will always be there for you," until it isn't. Some families are abusive, broken, and/or outright hostile to each other. Sometimes the best thing for a person to do is leave their family behind and instead surround themselves with caring friends and more distant relatives.
    Edit: Magnolia wasn't exactly encouraging to Sonia. She kinda just insulted and shamed her until she found something useful, then acted like she'd been supportive all along and retired.

      The point of the Champion in Galar was that they take care of the conflicts going on in the region. Leon took care of the problems that you were not ready for yet. When the conflict was thrust upon you with Eternatus, it felt much more impactful. The main conflict of Sword/Shield was the overwhelming adversity thrown at you by others participating in gym challenges. As you grew to understand the Galar region and its history, so did Leon's story intertwine with yours. I wish there was some expansion such as a book or anime special that showed Leon's perspective of the story up to Eternatus's reveal.

The past champions left the final fight to you for some reason. Despite the fact that it should be their jobs to protect their region. Oh there an evil team? Taking people as hostages? Welp not my problem. Hey kid who just started their journey. Go take care of it. Lance only helped in gen 2. For lake of rage. Never mind the radio tower, guess that too much for him. I’m glad we get a champion that took his job seriously. You only step up after you get all eight badges and defeating all challengers. Showing everyone that you was capable to deal with it. The only thing I hate is how easy rose was. Seriously an all steel team? Could have mix types to give us more a challenge ending with copperajah. Not just pure steel types

  • @DarkMinior

    I realized there is another theme to this game and that is passing down from one generation to the next. There’s Professor Magnolia passing down the title of professor to Sonia, Opal passing down the title of Fairy Gym Leader to Bede, Piers passing down the title of Dark Gym Leader to Marnie, Leon passing down the title of Champion to the player character, even Sordward and Shielbert passing down their self-proclaimed titles of the Kings of Galar to the player character. Considering how long Pokémon has been going on for, in our own world, there is literally a whole new generation of people that play the games. Some people who played the older games as children now have children of their own who play the games and it’s like a passing of the torch from the older generation to the new one to enjoy these games and have the best experience with Pokémon that they can.

    Mmm ah yes, thanks for this. I dont see SWSH's themes appreciated much outside of small pockets of peers on twitter and the like.
    I'd like to add that Rose's role in this whole familial theme is more than just "the man who abandoned bede". We know Rose runs most of Galar, from the means of entertainment, to the modes of sustainability. It's evident he genuinely cares about his region and his people. So when he's talking to leon about an energy crisis a thousand years away, it has the same tone as a parent talking to their kid about retirement plans. Down to the child's reluctance to do so because "that's money i could be using now, I can start saving later" being reflected in leon just wanting to fight his match.
    I think, while alot can be said about family being there for you as a theme, I think there's alot more said about the WAYS family is there for you, and how that varies from person to person. Because whether its being distant inspiration through a TV screen for years (Leon and hop), sending out your underlings to ensure your younger sister's success (Piers and marnie), or taking drastic measures without proper preparation (Rose and galar), there's a very realistic "its the caring intention that matters, despite how others take it" mentality throughout the game
    anyway sorry for rambling, I can go on forever if I dont cut myself off here lol
    Really awesome vid and can't wait to see what other themes you come across :D

    Thank You so much for covering this!!!
    I can't believe nobody else is, and I have brought this up to so many people!!!
    Milo asdlso has a little brother, though to my knowledge, he wasn't in the game - but he's in Milo's official art - and I don't know about Bea and Allister, but in Bea's official art, Allister is in one of the pics - or is it in Allister's art?
    Anyway, I'm not sure what their relationship is, but there's a lot of fan speculation that they're adoptive siblings.
    My sister was mad that Opal picked Bede and not her as the successor to her gym, and I tried to explain the reason but she wouldn't have it.
    But anyway, thank you so, so, sooo much for this...it is so awesome to see other people notice the things you have when it seemed like nobody cared...
    Thank you so much, and I hope you have a blessed day!

    while the message of family always being there to support you is an important message, it's important that we consider what family really means. there are lots of people with blood relationships who are very much NOT supportive of them and can even be abusive. family for some people can be their most integral friends.

  • @LeahLovesNature
    @LeahLovesNature Před 4 lety

    Interesting perspective. When I watched Pokemon Sword/Shield Let's Plays, I focused on the technological advances in Galar and Chairman Rose's shallow evil plan, and how the ancient heroes in the forest, Zacian and Zamazenta, help you fight the other-worldly threat that is Eternatus. The message I took away from the game is that one can only fight nature for so long before nature starts to fight back. However, this is a sweet and fitting message as well, and I'm glad you made a video about it.

    A lot of people have been focusing more on how Hop and the crisis of confidence he was facing, and that he eventually decides to change career paths because pursuing strength wasn’t worth it and wasn’t making him happy. That’s certainly a good lesson in itself, but I had completely overlooked the family aspect of the story. This is definitely one of the best videos you’ve made, I’ll be sure to share it with people!

  • @karaoconnoraliasraidra

    I'm probably not the first to think this, but here's a theory. I know Bede seems antagonistic toward just about everyone, but what if he seems somewhat antagonistic toward Opal because he thinks, "I don't want to get too attached because she'll...she'll leave like the others." Opal has to work with him to convince him that A) she's still got plenty of spirit left in her despite her age and B) when the great Mimikyu does take her hand and guide her into the next world, she'll still be with him in spirit.

  • @sinner9611
    @sinner9611 Před 4 lety

    I thought maybe the message was to never give up( well maybe it links to this message but idk) my reasoning for this is from the character Hop. He is shown as a head-on and upbeat character though when bede defeats him in a battle he thinks he isn’t good enough which is something many people think when they see and think how much better other are than them and it really effected his personality and gave him a bit more depth than other rivals from the past. He even changes up his team which shows what people do to make themselves stronger and better at the thats we love and thats exactly what hop did and he never gave up and even in the post game we see his story of a Pokemon trainer come to a close when he decides to become Sonia’s assistant. And that’s why I think the message from sword and shield is to never give up.

  • @melehu8368

    Okay, but now look at gen 7:
    Hau + the Kahuna
    Lillie/Gladion/Lusamine/the supposed father running the islands whose name I have forgotten
    Guzma/Plumeria/Team Skull
    Guzma/Lusamine
    Kukui/Burnet + Lillie, because they pretty much adopted her there
    Nanu/Acerola
    Tapus all bear a strong theme resemblance and could be considered sibling protectors.
    Heck, the islands are all separate units that together make up a whole--essentially, a family of their own.
    The theme of family is VERY much in Alola, but with more of an emphasis on estrangement and reconciliation.

  • @gio9255

    Family and growth were the main themes and GameFreak totally nailed it. Hop was the embodiment of these themes and seeing him find his true purpose thanks to the people around him was such a wonderful way to conclude the his story. I'm glad there is going to be a expansion rather than a director's cut that could have possibly retcon the best beats of Sword/Shield.

      Actually, there's a secret about both of them. Melony actually is the Mother of Gordie, then she said to Gordie that if he wanted to take over her gym. But Gordie didn't want it. And also Gordie, is the brother of Melony's family. Look closely at Gordie's rare league card, you will see that Gordie doesn't have his glasses there and Melony, maybe telling him to take over her gym, or just cheering her up. Also Gordie is angry too in the rare league card. Officially i've seen this in a video, but I don't remember which video. Well sorry that this comment was long. That's actually what I know from the both of them. So yea, that's all.

    It's all about supporting the next generation. Marnie, Bede, Sonia, your own character. It's all about helping the new people take over. Which makes sense as well with the anime with Ash training a new character. Pokémon has been going over 20 years, so it's a good idea to use this theme. That's a whole generation.
