The TRUTH Behind Pokémon Sword and Shield's Weird Fossil Pokémon
Vložit

- Pokemon Sword and Shield introduced a brand new set of fossil Pokemon, and they are a bit weird to say the least. They left many people shocked, and some disgusted by their strange appearance, but there is a very specific reason for why these new fossils look the way they do that might just make you appreciate them a bit more, so in this video I am going to reveal the truth behind Sword and Shield's fossil Pokemon to you all. I hope you enjoy!

Specifically the Piltdown Man.

Nice concept but badly executed

The dragons are kind of *cool* though.
which explains the scientist's name in the game, Cara Liss. wordplay on careless.
“Cara less”
Makes sense considering she is clearly a heartless monster reviving pokemon in the most inhumane and painful way possible
She deserves to be locked up imo
Red YoshiBro Either that, or she has absolutely no clue what she’s doing, which isn’t much better.
Someone give Cara Liss the Careless a restraining order.
She needs a beating
She was so concerned with whether or not she could that she never stopped and asked whether or not she should.
The guy from sun and moon who has a revives fossils from a van is better than cara liss the guy actually seems pationate and actually cares about the fossils
Arctozolt is genuinely upsetting to look at. He's constantly shivering his very existence is clearly just pain and suffering
Cara doesn’t care as long as it looks good to her
The others at least seemed okay with their forms, while arctozolt looks like it is constantly cold and can no longer feel warmth
Da Tellysayhi Dracovish can only breath water but has legs for land, Arctovish can’t breath or eat properly since it’s head is upside down
SOMEBODY GET THIS BOI A BLANKET
What about Cubchoo? It constantly has a runny nose. Kinda relatable, though.
its funny the idea to puzzle fossils into a new dinosaur skeleton, but seeing them alive, its really awful for me, like, they are constantly in pain just for existing, id loved if gamefreak added either one of these idea:
you can use a certain item/fossil to transform them into the full version of themselves
or
add them an evolution, where they adapt to their new anatomy and current galar times, and you actually see these living creatures enjoying life
just my thoughs :c
I agree 😭 they deserve a happy and painless life 😭
i like your ideas ,i think they made update with things like this.
I agree. It’s a cool idea but I feel really grossed out looking at them. It’s pure body horror for these poor things you forced into existence, and all of them seem to suffer in some way for their deformity. Maybe I’m taking it too seriously. I just feel bad for them.
Honestly I think feeling bad for them is almost the point. Having an evolution where they adapt would be really cool though. It could even make the next game's pokedex change their entries to note how they were miscatogorized as real fossil pokemon, like how after a while we figured out that they were mismatched.
i mean, wouldnt the suffering have been when they used to be alive?
Okay so the fossil pokemon are cool... but...
Are they okay? They look like they popped out of Fullmetal Alchemist..even the most normal looking one has its goddamn head on backwards
And that’s what puts me off with Arctovish. If the pattern on it’s head was actually the mouth, I would like it more. But now...
**shudders**
I believe they are constantly in pain so.... no.
I don't even want to refer to what we've seen in FMA/FMAB
@@ShadowKnight5204 ED...WARD....
Robert Wimms Arctozolt in particular just looks like it’s constantly suffering :(
Cara Liss is a monster.
Every other scientist, in every other region, has been able to revive ancient Pokemon using only a fragment of said Pokemon for decades.
She purposely wanted to experiment on Pokemon, no matter how much that Pokemon suffered because of it.
And the player is partially responsible for crimes against Pokemon.
And I find it odd that the Pokedex entries for these creations, throw random hypotheses of why they died out and never questioned their source or how these Pokemon came into being in the first place.
There seems to be corruption in the Galar scientific community that the government is overlooking.
After finding out about this awhile back. I never made a fossil pokemon. Makes me feel bad for them.
You wrote your comment twice on two separate videos lmao
@@FiniteMan1933 it's been 3 years man...and I wanted to make a point.
There is a lot of stupidity and corruption in galar period.

I noticed that too, I was like what?! Why didnt he say that in the beginning
Idk if you didn't want to be spoiled then you shouldn't click a video that talks about the fossils in the title lol
I hope that in later games we could get the REAL fossil pokemon
Like fish-fish,drake-drake and so on
I hope the games get sequels, I wanna see hop as pokemon assistant
No, I want to see the other halves fused together in an ironically funny way!!
arctovish is fish-fish but they put the head on upside down
I think we will need a third set of fossils for that. Which would be awesome.
The Dragon halves of two of them are clearly not from the Electric pokemon. So it would mean a ice/??? (new dragon top, water bottom), a ???/??? (new dragon top, new electric bottom), a ???/water (water top, new electric bottom), dragon/??? (new dragon top, dragon bottom), and a ???/electric (electric top, new electric bottom)
The new Fishious Rend would be the type of the new top.
The types, and to a lesser extent the abilities, seem to be connected to each half, so its a neat way to make your own monstrosity.
@@1313puredragon the other half is more of a ichthyosaur, a aquatic reptile because of its hind legs and visible tail fluke. Other half is Dunkleostus, an extinct fish. So its not a fish fish but a reptile fish
i just want to see how the fossils actually look because they look like they are suffering
Try search for images of them you may find art done by a fan showing what they believe the fossils looked like.

Hail Giratina 666 😈
_Heaven?_ Don't you mean the Hall of Origin?
No, he's afraid of what his creation created
I mean how does the Pokedex know anything about any of the fossil Pokémon? Even the “real” fossils, surely it’s all just speculation anyway
I think it's because everyone's still just taking what they're given without question, which is what people can come up with from simply observing the Pokemon these days just assuming that these Pokemon are exactly those who walked the earth back in the past.
It’s because the Pokédex entries are written by the kids the professors are sending out on their adventures to fill the Pokédex. And kids are dumb
@@Father-of-Xerxes I thought that Cara wrote them
@@beybladegeekusa7340 A very irresponsible scientist wrote them. It was a cover up.
It’s kinda similar to how some legendary Pokemon dex entries are just “legends says that.....” or “it’s rumoured that.....” it’s not straight up facts it’s just speculation
My personal headcanon is scientists made habitats for the fossil pokemon and observed how they behave when left to their own devices, then based the dex entries on that

It explains how they formed the specific theories but it doesn't make them any less bogus since these Pokemon clearly never existed without human tinkering.

Hopefully if we get sequels, we'll get the other halves of the fossils

@@danphantom2583 I don't know if this makes it better, but the Dex says that Arctozolt shivers to generate electricity, so maybe it isn't cold. Sure, it has a runny nose, but so does Cubchoo, who's quite happy with life.
I think Dracovish has it harder, since it can only breath underwater but walk on land, it has a clear cut opening right through its body (Thank the game rating that thing isn't bleeding all the time) and it has its head upside down and on the tail, which probably means its digestive system is separated into two halves that aren't connected.
Glad other people agree with my take that these Pokémon didn’t actually exist in the past and are instead the work of a mad scientist.
For the Pokédex entries- I remember an episode of the anime where Ash met the “professor” who was responsible for writing the Pokédex entries but he admitted he just made them up.

Pretty sure the Pokédex has always just made up random crap
Well I think all the random crap the Pokémon says is usually just rumors or mythology surrounding the Pokémon in question. The Pokédex is an encyclopedia not some all knowing entity and even if it was that still wouldn’t stop it from throwing in some mythology and folklore in. For example let’s look at duskulls entertaining in sword. “If it finds bad children who won’t listen to their parents, it will spirit them away-or so it’s said.” this Pokédex entry may seem like proof that it kidnaps children at first glance but the “so it’s said” points to the idea that such an idea is just an old wives tale used to get children to behave. Kind of like Krampus or Santa Klaus in the real world.
If you want an example of real encyclopedias doing that what better place to check then the number one online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Let’s go with elephants which if you scroll down far enough has a section that states “Elephants have been the subject of religious beliefs. The Mbuti people of central Africa believe that the souls of their dead ancestors resided in elephants.” However, most people would agree that the souls of people don’t reside in elephants and that Wikipedia in this instance is just talking about how elephants impacted various human cultures, because at the end of the day how creatures like Pokémon and animals affect humans and society is an important thing to note.
Also I imagine the urban legends in Pokémon would be way more crazy then the ones in our world since the Pokémon world has actual ghost, psychics and time traveling entities.
I remember in the anime there was a “professor” that Ash met who was responsible for creating the Pokédex entries and he admitted he just made them up
then again the Pokédex can't make up it's mind if Exeggcute are egg's or seed's
Bulborb87 true
But they’re seeds
@@dapperparraper860 Not to mention that the pokédex sometimes contradicts itself, like with miltank's description.

nathan prins oh my god, someone really have the exact same thought as me?! I like weird things too :D
I thought they were a neat concept with predictable results when I saw them, but I appreciated them a lot more afterwards. Especially since they're the first non-rock type fossil pokemon
So glad I'm not the only person that lives them, my favorite is Dracozolt ( I think I spelled that right)
I honestly love the upside down head of Arctovish
Would've been nice to highlight Omanyte in Sword and Shield since for hundreds of years, the locals that found ammonite fossils were thought to be petrified snakes, snakestones.
I think they were trying to build the “perfect” dinos
Example: Dracovish
Can run 40mph and has incredible Jaw Strength
But they didn’t consider the downsides:
This Pokemon can not breathe unless underwater
Solution: fish bowl head
Disability: can’t bite
Loon solution: tank over gills only
Now we just need the second halves of those fossil Pokemon to show what they actually looked like before they become extinct and revived only to mismatched
I always knew that the Pokemon were just mashed together and not true fossil Pokemon; meaning that they aren't the same Pokemon that actually walked the earth. I just didn't know that it was actually based on what archaeologists used to do in England. I think that the reason why the Pokedex talks as if these Pokemon did exist in the past is because it's made by people who are just taking these Pokemon like they are those from the past without question because Cara Liss says so. May be something of a social commentary on those who do that in real life; just swallow what they're given without question.

As much as I love the concept and appreciate the ideas behind the fossils, it's not enough to make me like them. If I've learned something from paleontology art it's that you can create an incorrect design which is still pleasant to the eyes and doesn't look like its life is constant suffering(which is probably the main reason people don't like these new fossils).
Bellaeon They're caricatures. Of course they'd go to the logical extreme.
Me too I cant use them it gives me the creeps. Plus they look terrible.
Another theory , that I also agree , for this pokemon's desing is that back in the early days of paleotology there was in the UK called the Cristal Palace and inside that palace there was a park with statues of dinosaurs made of concret . This statues were made by a famous scupltor and with the help of a paleotologist at the time , but due to the lack of bones the statues were inaccurate and had various mistakes that were proven by further investigation in the following years . Even thought the park was open to public , but after some years due to the already refered inaccuracy of the statues and more invesgation , it was shut down and abandone after . In 2012 the park was rebuild and reopen to public .
I love how the paleontologist's name that creates the fossil Pokemon for you is "Cara Liss," which is pretty funny considering the irl backstories.
You know, this reminds me of that Monty Python skit where the toe of the giant foot was mistaken to be the trunk of an unsightly elephant
Hopefully in the next game we put the poor Pokemon back to how they where meant to be.
I wish!!
Like an evolution
Hoshiden Lycanroc - blood vomit that’s most likely
That arctozolt makes me so sad
Some more fun facts:
1. The fishy head resembles Dunkleosteus (Dunkle's bone), an armored fish. It is tied to, no surprise, the fish fossil found commonly in Shield.
2. The dinosaur head resembles a raptor, member of Dromaeosauridae (running lizard) family of dinosaurs. It is tied to the dino fossil found commonly in Sword.
3. The dinosaur body resembles not Stegosaurus but Kentrosaurus (sharp point lizard), a distant relative. It is tied to the drake fossil found commonly in Shield. This means Dracovish is the easiest fossil pokemon to make in Shield.
4. The fish body is tied to the *bird* fossil of all things found commonly in Sword. Arctozolt is the easiest fossil pokemon to make in Sword. No bird that has ever existed had fins and a tail like that. It is likely based on a Mosasaur (Meuse river lizard) but those were not closely related to dinosaurs, which can be considered the ancestors of all birds. There is speculation of a whale-like bird called a Gannetwhale which scientists believe could exist if humans no longer existed and life was left to evolve. Amazingly, entry for the bird fossil states whatever it belonged to soared through the sky. How it could do that with fins, a rudder tail, and a huge belly is anyone's guess.

Very good and insightful video! I had wondered if the mismatched fossils were perhaps a nod to the Piltdown Man hoax (in which someone put an orang-utan jaw on a human skull and tried to pass it off as a new species). Somewhere around here I have four issues of a five-part limited series on dinosaurs. One issue talked about one paleontologist who hated another. Why? The first guy had put a dinosaur's skull on its tail instead of its neck, the second guy called him out on it, and the first guy decided to bear ill will against the second guy and try to one-up him even though it was his own dang fault for not bothering to check to see which end was which. Unfortunately the story was a two-parter and my Dad never found the issue with the second part, so I never learned how that story of rival dinosaur experts turned out.
I’m hoping to see in a Sword and Shield sequel where we can see the true forms of those Pokémon
Or the upcoming dlcs
Cara Liss didn't just frankenstein those fossils together, she also put the pieces incorrectly. Dracovish's head is coming out of the dinosaur leg's tail and Arctovish's head is upside down.
I’m a big dinosaur enthusiast and love the idea behind this but hate the execution of it. They all look miserable and their Pokédex entries don’t help me feel better about them at all.
I do like that they’re not rock type Pokémon
I imagine their missing halves are the ones that give them the Rock Type.
@@troykv96 I hope that's not the case tbh. The rock typing on every fossil pokemon is very lazy and boring.
U guys remember the short British parody seireis Dorkly was doing in the run up to sword and shield body builders? I think game freak watches to much memes 😒
I played sword and shield through without any research beforehand. When I revived arctozolt I said in my mind “You’re weird, like me, you’re on the team kid”. Nicknamed him Frozone and never looked back
I just hope we get to see what they actually look like later on
Good video, Hoops! I knew a good bit about the early history of paleontology, but for some reason I didn't make that connection. In-universe, though, I bet the Pokedex entries are just based on what Cara Liss said (she probably "discovered" all these Pokemon). A lot of people probably take her word at face value because, well, she's a scientist, right? Surely she knows what she's talking about. It does make the people of Galar seem a bit dim, though, especially considering that other regions seem to be wayyy better at paleontology.
They were also fine with being used as batteries, Rose was concerned about an energy crisis a thousand years in the future dispite that it is literally impossible to have an energy crisis in the pokemon world, and never thought to dig behind the gaint rock with doodles on it. I would say that they are moronic.
Yup, just goes to show that you should never blindly believe a scientist about anything.
This is why the fossil Pokémon are among my top favourite gen 8 Pokémon.
That actually connects with the theme of Pokemon Sword and Shield. I mean its theme is taken from the metrical romance of the knights; or calvary. Not to mention that the Corviknights were used to travel, old taxi style, and the castles and myths in the story connect with the modernity of how those fossil pokemons come to be.
Awesome video!
Maybe in the next games they'll make the missing halves all four fossils. Think of the bizarre combinations with all 8 pieces
Like a mermaid stegosaurus dragging itself on the ground (Dragon - Water)
or a chicken-legged plesiosaur troubling to balance itself (Ice - Electric)
or vice versa
or just make all of them whole again
Ok so anyone else wanna know the other half of the yellow fossil mon and the other half of the red/green fossil mon?
I love them they just look like they're in a constant state of Agony and pain
Finally. Someone who's actually paying attention and not only questioning. BUT ALSO seeking out the answers.
Okay, there are 4 different fossils being Fish, Bird (Head parts) Drake and Dino (Body parts) being 4 different Types, I will talk about all of them with more details and theories here:
*Fish Fossil was a very big Water-Type ancient fish that has a very big head and very strong jaw, because the Fossil pokemons revived from it can learn Iron Head and have Strong Jaw ability. This pokemon was probably in the top of the food chain in ancient oceans, compare to Sharpedo and Wailord in modern pokemon world oceans.
*Bird Fossil was a small Electric/Flying-Type ancient bird that had some kind of hyperactive nature, as Dracozolt, the Fossil pokemon revived from it has Hustle as ability. The only reason why Arctozolt doesn't have Hustle as well probably is because it used to be a Flying-Type pokemon, and Flying-Type pokemon hates Ice-Type a lot, which make the "Bird" part of Arctozolt suffered from very uncomfortable cold that the body bring to it. Insert the "Why am I still here? Just to suffer?" meme here
*Drake Fossil was a Dragon-Type ancient creature that had very strong feet, as all Fossil pokemon revived from it can learn Earthquake, a strong move that only pokemon with strong feet can learn. It seem that this ancient pokemon had very different sizes when they were born and when they are full grown up. Because the different in size of the "Drake" part of Dracovish and Dracozolt is very noticeable. While the "Drake" part in Dracozolt is very large, that part of Dracovish is very small instead, which make me believe that the "Drake" part of Dracovish was probably from the baby "Drake" ancient creature
*Dino Fossil was an Ice-Type ancient amphibian creature that probably lived more underwater, because all Fossil pokemon revived from it have both legs and a shark tail that seem to help it swim underwater. Not only that, all the Fossil pokemon revived from it, Arctozolt and Arctovish both are very slow on land with only 55 speed. Which make me believe that the "Dino" pokemon was a creature that inspired from Plesiosaurus, the dinosaur that could live underwater but was very slow on land
Okay, that's just my theories and opinions, I probably will forget about this topic so fast that I won't realize I wrote this comment anyways. Bye!
I wonder if they fact that theyre genderless is related to them being, in essence, hybrids, which famously cant breed (i know theres ditto, but close enough 😅)
They could be genderless because they, by all accounts, are bizarre amalgamations of entirely different prehistoric creatures that for all we know didn't even exist in the same time period and as such, must've had very different breeding methods. Hell, their different parts could've had different genders before being haphazardly mixed together for all we know
He show fossil Pokemon
He says spoiler warning afterwards
Fun fact. Elasmosaurus was originally restored by Professor Cope with the head on the end of the tail, just like Dracovish. No fossil animal has had a head on upside down, but other parts have occasionally been put on upside down like leg bones, scapula, pectoral girdles.
Yeah the Pokedex thing is probably completely related to things like, us thinking Dinosaurs were completely scaly when in fact a lot of them were feathered, or assuming a bodily function etc. of one animal when really it was nothing like that etc.
Someone called them writhing homonculi 💀💀💀💀
You’re talking about the dinos, right? Not the Pokémon?
They are, in a way
2013 Klue Liss
2019 Cara Liss
I already knew about this since I've loved this topic since I was a young child, but it's nice to see a video about it, and with facts to back up what's said too! :D Great video all in all, hoping that people will have just a little more love for the odd and uncanny fossil pokemon now!
Don't forget that it wasn't long ago when people used to think non-avian dinosaurs were an "evolutionary dead end" and they were fated to go extinct. And the Pokedex entries regarding these fossil pokemon mentions something similar.
"I guess i should include a spoiler warning..."
*has already been showing the pokemon for a full minute*
tHESE FOSSILS ARE SAD,
The dex entries were just Cara Liss covering her crimes against nature
Have you seen the Shield dex entry for Dracovish though? It literally says that it can run at speeds over 40mph but it can't breathe unless it's underwater.
-\_(; _ ;)_/-
Shows off the fossil Pokémon for the entire intro
1 minute later
"if you haven't seen the fossil Pokémon yet here's your warning"
OK then
I freaking love themselves. I’ve always liked fossil Pokémon
I like how they are no longer rock types because they are fossil pokemon. I just wish they looked cool though instead of disgusting me. Like giving them their full bodies and making them proportionate. Imagine Dracovish with a full T-Rex body with a fish head in the front instead of on the tail.
I hope there will be some expansion with the fossil that werent here so you can complete the bodies
As a Brit who loves palaeontology I really appreciate these Pokémon.
I personally think that the reason that the Pokédex talks about them in the way that it does is a reference to how we can never really actually know how extinct animals behaved.
Do you think Arceus stays in the Hall of Origin because he stays in fear of what he's created?
dracozolt and arcto vish are four different pokemon the body of draco zolt is different
same for arcto vish
We don't even see the heads for two of the pokemon. That's messed up.
Would love to see what each half of the fossil pokemon would look like in their actual individual forms
I just wish we could do more mix-matching. Bird fossil legs on fish head, so on and so forth
