  • My first attempt at the taranov swarm procedure. This procedure does not require you find the queen. All bees are shaken out onto a blanket. The field bees will fly back to the colony. The remaining bees will stay with the queen and form a ball under the board which you then place in a new box in a location of your choice. The old colony should have swarm cells and will requeen itself. But you must only leave one or two cells to avoid additional swarms.

So how did the colonies do after the Taranov swarm?

So the queen can’t bridge the gap? Very interesting procedure. Looks like some neighbors are getting a little bee boost too. 👍

Well, i wonder if she could? I’ve had queens fly off on me as i tried to grab them. They don’t fly real well. But a queen on the verge of swarming can fly a little better. So, your question peaks my interest. It appears that they will not attempt to fly. Taranov s focus was more on the worker bees themselves. He thought that the 4 inch distance was just enough to get those worker bees that would fly back to fly back and leave the queen with the bees that would have swarmed with her had she left. I admit though that I can’t explain it all. But I will say this much, some people have called this procedure ridiculous and unnecessary but I actually though it was fantastic and worked very well. And, shaking off all the frames allows you to cull queen cells to avoid secondary swarms. I appreciate you watching my video Joel. Have a great evening
