Wow i been shooting these old guns for 40 years and ive learned a lot on my own by trial and error sure wish id had Blackie along that 👣 trail. My son now a young man who shoots these old guns has someone he can turn too. To help him with problems after im gone. Love your videos Blackie REALLY do you have taught me a lot too im on track to watching all your videos. Nice job Blackie. Thank you
Your videos are some of the best if not the best on black powder revolvers. Every time I think of some little additional possibility or detail about what your explaining, a second later you bring it up and explain it in painful detail. 10/10 keep it up. P.S. you could probably make some money selling DVDs of this stuff.
"Ach du lieber" Senor Blackie! Your expertise & quality of your videos are always wonderful! As a seasoned C&B shooter, I always learn something new! I really enjoyed the sound of the birds in the background a lot too. And remember, "please don't squeeze da shaman"!!! He may just squeeze back!!! And he's a BIG shaman too! Ya, "gift goot feelingk"!!!!!
Great informative video but I'd like to correct one statement made. Screws and nipples are NOT castings. They are machined on what is known as Swiss screw machines. These parts have burrs because they didn't want to take the time having the machine take extra passes to remove burrs or they weren't changing tools that became dull. They could of also hand deburred the parts after machining but they didn't want to spend the time and money to do so.
Damn Blackie you just helped me fix my 1851 navy! The nipples where hammered flat just a little bit your drill and file trick got it working perfectly. The caps where kinda hard to get on the nipples and it would miss fire a lot not any more thanks a lot man.
You are the man, Blackie. I have an old brass frame Colt that is gonna get this fix. I wrote it off, figured it was a cheap pistol and quit fooling with it. It was a gift. I don't like the brass frames but I am gonna give this a try. Thanks.
Very informative! I only shoot cartridge conversions, but I listen to your c&p videos very closely just to get valuable insights into the mechanical characteristics of these classic guns.
I've learned that CCI no.10 caps are a bit tight. I put on percussion caps, I pull the trigger and click. I bring the cylinder around to fire and I pull the trigger and bang. What I did to alleviate the problem was switch to Remington no.10 and I don't have that problem anymore.
So glad you are doing this. I learn so much from you. What are you going to do about the new rules on CZcams? Can we get your videos elsewhere? Have you ever thought about compiling some of the videos in a DVD? Thanks again for your expertise. Jimi.
i have saved all my videos ..and can post some place else..fb is the easy choice since i already have a page there..and belleve it or not i uderstand some gun heavy sites are going to porn hub of all places
James you said it, the new and pure evil you tube hippie rules will destroy all of this, I wish Blackie would compile all of his BP Pistol knowledge onto a box set of DVD's and make it available, having that in the fire safe would be a great thing when introducing future generations to this when we are all gone and they inherit our guns without the ability to ask us or anyone about the issues that come with them.
i have earned that name 3 times in my life. its a long story ..but its short for little black bird..a name my grandfather used for me..that got shortened to blackie
Yeah what makes nipples stick in the first place is sorta like in the same concept area as the Diesel engines, byproduct of a spent propellant working it`s way into the threads and seizing it. Having to stand up to high pressure also doesnt help.
lightly buff with #OOOO steel wool..then hand rub in boiled linseed oil.. i buy the small bottles from the art painting store..its a bit finer than the stuff ya get at the hardware store
I have heard that if your hammer face has a circular ring or scar on it from contacting the cap it shows that your hammer is peening the nipple. My question is this, my 1851 has a distinct ring on the hammer but my Slix Shot nipples are undamaged after hundreds of rounds whereas my Remington literally beats the hell out of stock nipples but the hammer face looks clean & smooth with no indication of over-contact. My Remington is stainless steel and the 1851 is standard steel which seems to be considerably softer than the stainless. Since I'm not having issues with the Colt I am going to leave well enough alone but the Remington has to be adjusted. Just how much do you think needs to be filed off of the hammer? It noticeably starts to flatten-out the nipples after a hundred rounds or so but leaves no dent on the hammer and I start getting random misfires. I haven't tried Slix Shot nipples on the Remmie for fear of ruining them. Any advice would be welcome.
I answered my own question. My hammer was WAY off. I had to file about a 16th of an inch off of the hammer where it makes contact with the nipple. The tip of the hammer was too long as well so the notch safety wouldn't work at all. My stainless Pietta 1858 was made in the middle 1990's and it shows.
Thank you for this information- I’m pretty sure the problem I have with mine is that the hammer is hitting too close to the nipples- I’ll see if I can fix that

thanks..i have been told i could do a book..i have more percussion revolver videos on the way stay tuned
will do and thx again
I strongly agree with James Lesick that compiling all of the BP pistil knowledge onto a DVD would be a great way to preserve this knowledge.
when and if they take my stuff down..i will compile it and off a dvd to anyone interested
That's a good idea.

i had a 1872 open top in .44 colt a few yrs ago..loved it and hope to have another in the future

oooo if you make dvds I would buy all episodes
Thanks Blackie, i have also noticed caps with missing priming compound.
Great video
I always uniform the flash hole even in my brass cartridge guns, helps with a much more even ignition and that equates to better accuracy
So glad you are doing this. I learn so much from you.

Look into bitchute.com from what I understand it'll automatically upload your videos from CZcams for you.
thanks i will look into them
great info
I love watching your videos Blackie. I'm curious as to how you got the name Blackie. Thank you for your hard work and time.
i have earned that name 3 times in my life. its a long story ..but its short for little black bird..a name my grandfather used for me..that got shortened to blackie
Instead of using JB weld on the face of your hammer, an even better option IMO would be to replace the hammer if parts are available.
thats always the best choice..
On stuck nipples, I always put anti seize grease on the nipple threads.

CCI #10 caps are notorious for double strike ignition go with CCI #11 or remington #10 caps cci 10s are way too tight.
what do you do to your grips. finish wise they look good.
lightly buff with #OOOO steel wool..then hand rub in boiled linseed oil.. i buy the small bottles from the art painting store..its a bit finer than the stuff ya get at the hardware store

or a book I would buy a book you wrote about black powder
i have bounced around the idea..maybe next yr
I have left caps exposed to open air for an extended time , not moisture just open , and have them not fire .
Thank you for this information- I’m pretty sure the problem I have with mine is that the hammer is hitting too close to the nipples- I’ll see if I can fix that
Blackie, hows come aunt Jemima syrup tastes so good?
What can you do if the hammer comes into contact with the nipple. Can you file down the tip of the nipple w/o messing it up?
far easier to file the hammer face to remove that tiny amount
Thanks. Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees!
You might want make CD's...I hear,YT wants remove such videos.
When u clean ur gun can't u just run a nipple pick down the nipple
