Louie Prima never fails to get a smile out of everyone!
It's a hot day in August In the early 1960s. I'm playing with my friend Nicholas in the yard. It is before the age of air conditioning in most homes, so his mother Jenny has the windows in the house wide open. Emanating from those windows is the sound of some Italian singer, Louis Prima is one of them. I can hear her singing at the top of her lungs. Nothing short of a wonderful childhood memory.
Love the image.
Same here. Growing up in New Orleans, (his roots) we heard his music all the time. Absolute legend.
That’s what it’s all about !!!! 😘
There is another Louie Prima song called Jump Jive N' Wail. There is a great version of this song done by Brian Setzer (lead singer of the Stray Cats). Lots of swing dancing and Brian has a great horn section.
AGREE!!! LOVE BOTH VERSIONS!!
@fatherman9 is right. You can't go wrong with either version of Jump Jive N' Wail.
Louis Prima and Keely Smith were big-time performers on TV back in the 60s.
He was married to her …….
LOVE Louie Prima!
Kathie says… I just LOVE Louie Prima!!! I love listening to him especially when I wash the dishes…I get them done much quicker!!!❤️
When Sinatra and Dean were done at the main stage at the casino, they would go to the bar/club, where Lous and his band played from midnight to 6 am. This song is a live recording. People would come to hear Frank and Dean and Sammy, and stay to hear Louis Prima all night.
He and wife Keely Smith (awesome female crooner) were a popular couple.I Wish You Love would be a good one to start with.
They really do need to react to Keely Smith as a soloist. Definitely fits the female crooner genre that they like. “It’s Magic,” “When your lover has gone,” “On the Sunny side of the street,” “Stardust.”
The best of Italy and New Orleans combined !! ⚜️🇮🇹
Yes!! The dixieland horns at the end! ⚜️⚜️⚜️
Gotta love Louie❤ always makes me smile😊
He always...ALWAYS....sounds like he is having the best time singing his songs. Such fun! More Louie, please!
Louie Prima should always be seen live!
if you have access to a time machine, I'm in! Seriously, I'm sure he put on a great show, base on the live recordings I've heard.
Bobby Darin was also a crooner with Italian roots, born Walden Robert Cassotto.
im italian, been raised louie prima you have to hear him play the horn trumpet.
Louis Prima - New Orleans born and raised
JUST A GIGOLO
AGREE!
They already reacted to it
NIGHT TRAIN ! louies band rocks
Absolutely LOVE King Louis. He's got SO many awesome songs! Sam Butera & the Witnesses are USUALLY his band, and his wife at the time, Keely Smith!! GOLD...all of it. And it's something the kids can listen to as well!
Guess next up should be Mambo Italiano. either Rosemary Clooney ( aunt of George Clooney ) or Dean Martin
❤ this. LOUIS Prima is one of the Best!
Old black magic duet with his wife Keely Smith. Won a grammy
Angelina is also a gorgeous song written and performed by the incomparable Tommy Emmanuel, he wrote it to welcome one of his daughters into this world. Tommy is often considered the greatest acoustic guitarist alive, you guys are so ready for his music ✨
Louis Prima was a household favorite in my childhood. He’s so energetic. Look up a live version of anything he did and you’ll see how joyful he is!!
One of his greatest hits was "Sing, Sing, Sing." It was covered by the great Benny Goodman and his orchestra.
You've got to do his Jump, Jive and Wail with his wife Keely Smith.
NEVER fails to deliver!!! Prima is just PRIME!!! Just Spectacular!!!!
You would see how animated he is and how much fun they have together
My husband loved this guy …..
he would sing along with him, and also play the accordion!!!!!
Tons of fun, I miss those days !!!
Louis's background is New Orleans jazz, and he was a driving force in that genre. His decades long career went through a lot changes, ranging from small combos to a big band. I don't think he fits under the crooner umbrella - he could croon, no doubt, but it wasn't his main style.
Yeah he was a New Orleans Italian, back when the French Quarter was heavily Sicilian; I went to grade school in the Quarter in the 70s and there were still vestiges of that world back then
As musical tastes changed and the WW2 generation stayed home and watched TV instead of going to night clubs, it got harder to pay all of the musicians in a big band. It’s a testament to how great Louis Prima was that he could re-invent himself (and have success) as a five-piece act. And that his show could have more energy than a rock n roll act of the same time.
Agreed.
The voice of Baloo in Jungle Book was Phil Harris. He had a novelty song called "The Thing".
Classic! Glad you’ve already checked out his Just a Gigolo.
I'm Italian and my parents loved Louis Prima. They used to play his records all the time. This brings back some great memories. Thank you so much for doing this reaction ❤
My parents saw Louis Prima, Keely Smith and his band, Sam Butera and he Witnesses SO many times when they went to Las Vegas on vacations in the mid 50s through the mid 60s. My Dad said that after seeing Louis, Keely and the band in the main show, they hang out and watch the band do their own set later on that night.
JEALOUS!!
@@paulguthrie4857 Right? Hearing them tell me of all the great singers they saw every night they were there was mind-blowing. My parents were working class people. They couldn't have afforded anything in Vegas now. They'd go to Vegas for a week for their anniversary. They stopped when they had me. But, it was about nine years of amazing live music for them.
Louie had big energy in his music, so unique.
Louis Prima was a New Orleans band leader, singer and trumpeter who blended New Orleans jazz with popular songs of the period. He was a true musician and performer.
His song "Just a Giglio" with his wife Keeley Smith is great. Another singer from the Jungle Book movie was Phil Harris, he was a singer and big Band leader and comedian. Was a regular on Jack Benny's radio show in the late 30's and 40's. He was Baloo the Bear in Jungle Book and a number of other characters in Disney movies.. Check out his song "The Thing"
Kathie says… I forgot to mention…Sam Butera was Louie Prima’s sax player. He is AWESOME!!!
Louis is one of ‘The Three Louie’s’ that I have cherished listening to over the years-the other two being Louis Armstrong and Louis Jordan. They all pick you up and lift your spirits, we’re all lucky to have their music to listen to!
Thank you guys again, you realy do need to watch him live to see the full talent of the man...
Love Louie. He's a main stay on my summer play list.
I wouldn’t classify Louie Prima as a Crooner; he’s primarily a jazz trumpeter/singer/entertainer. Nevertheless he’s still a treat to listen to!👍👍
He is from the crooner era but he isn't a crooner himself. You are right. Very jazzy and full of fun
Totally agree. Jazz with lots of Italian spice.
During the Rat Pack Days in Las Vegas (early 60’s) Louis Prima played three shows a night at the Sahara in a small-ish lounge. All of the A-listers who would work Vegas would play their own shows, then finish up the night at the 3 AM Louis Prima show because they all thought it was the best show on the strip. When I hear those live recordings, I always imagine Frank and Sammy and Dean-o in the audience.
Impressive knowledge well done 👍
Gotta love Louie Prima!!! You don't need to understand Italian to love this song!
My father loved Louie Prima. A good memory for me, thanks!
I loved it... the most epic chair dancing I`ve ever seen!!! Peace and brother love to you and all.
King Louie. Love him
Another New Orleans legend! Must be New Orleans night. He's the other Louie from New Orleans playing jazz trumpet and vocals ( the first being Louis Armstrong ).
You guys watched The Godfather. This was the song they sang at the wedding. It was slightly different but it was this song for sure.
Yep
The great Louie Prima! The composer of the classic “Sing Sing Sing.” Benny Goodman, and band made a fantastic recording back in 1938 at Carnegie Hall, with Count Basie, Gene Krupa. It still sounds great today.
My papa loved him and Keely Smith and had all of their records. Every time he played them, he and I both would smile. Thank you for making me smile with this reaction video 😊❤
Aw, this reminds me of my grandma, Angelina.
You guys are a riot. Love you guys. I'm 5 years older than Jay's grandfather and I totally enjoy watching young people digging the older music.
"Oh Marie" "Banana Split For My Baby" "Buona Sera" "Jump, Jive an' Wail" "Beep Beep"
You 2 are adorable 😍
LOVE Louis Prima! He and his band performed a LOT in Vegas and was said to put on a “banger” of a show. 👍🙌
Louie Prima --- the voice of "King Louie" in the original "Jungle Book"
Another Italian singer, Tony bennett and songs like when do the bells ring for me, the good life, for once in my life, fly me to the moon, steppin’ out, the way you look tonight, the best is yet to come, love for sale, the days of wine and roses with bill evans
Don't forget "I left my heart in San Francisco" his trademark song.
There is also a Louie Jorden of the same era that I'm sure you will enjoy you can start with "Nobody Here but us Chickens."
And “Jack,You’re Dead”!
Reminds me of family parties when I was young, miss all the old people, we don’t have fun like that anymore. And that was my nonnas name.
He's very upbeat and jovial, me likes it.
Feels like an Italian wedding.
Another great singer out of New Orleans where he grew up
Louis Prima Keely Smith "That Old Black Magic" you'll absolutely love it!!!!
Love Louis!
This one is just too much fun! The first part of the song is performed in a style called "tarantella," an Italian folk music style that goes with the dance of the same name, often heard at wedding receptions and other celebrations. Then of course Louis and Keely kick it into high-level swing, the jazzman's specialty. (Footnote: His band the Witnesses also featured one of the great trumpet players of that era, Sam Butera.)
Stories are that Frank Sinatra used go see him and his band in Las Vegas all the time. JUST A GIGALO was a big hit for him. He and one of his 5 wives Keely Smith was also in the band for a while and did background singing as well as duets with Louis. One of their duets you can see live from 1959 is HEY BOY, HEY GIRL. Just luv this guy, thanks for this reaction.
My Dad and Louie were very good friends and would have dinner together often after playing golf at his golf course and clubhouse in Covington, LA...❤
Fun & Entertaining!... :) You Guys had some Fun Too! Great Reaction, You Guys!
hey, i have this album! great one. i had an accountant once who was a serious swing and jazz head, and when i mentioned that i liked Louis Prima, he shouted, "LOUIS PRIMA?? That guy wasn't serious -- he was a CLOWN!" hahaha -- he was so disgusted that i like him, but i still think he's great. He really is kind of the David Lee Roth of his era.
My Italian Parents played his records in the 1960s Growing up.
The ramones “I just want to have something to do is good”
I have that Louie Prima album, and love the whole thing.
How did I miss a Louis Prima reaction?!? I'm a day late, but have plenty of suggested songs of his for you - "When You're Smiling", "The Sheik of Araby", "Buona Sera", "Just a Gigolo", "Oh Marie", "Jump Jive & Wail", "You Rascal You", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "Swing It", "Night Train", "Sing Sing Sing", "I'm in the Mood for Love" & at Xmas, "Shake Hands With Santa Claus". That should keep you busy for a little while (don't worry, I have more). Louis Prima is a national treasure & one of the most beloved NOLA artists!
Louis Prima ALWAYS makes me want to second line!
Just a Gigalo 👏👏by him
Or David Lee Roth covered it 🤔 great song either way ✌️🍻🤠❤️
he also wrote Sing Sing Sing way ahead of its time
Joe Diffie, third rock from the sun
Pat Travers, boom boom out go the lights
LYNYRD SKYNYRD, honky tonk night time man
Led Zeppelin, Hotdog
Brooks and Dunn, boot scootin boogie
REO Speedwagon, 157 riverside avenue, off the live album "you get what you play for "
All these are awesome 👌
As fans of The Jungle Book(67), you guys need to check out Phil Harris aka Baboo The Bear. He was also Little John in Disney’Robin zHood and the Lead in The Aristocats. He was a bandleader and singer in the late forties and fifties. Songs: What I Like About The South, The Thing, Smoke Them Cigarettes, and The Preacher And The Bear.
His radio show can still be found on You Tube, it's a hoot.
You definitely need to check out a live video from Louis and his band!
6:52 Louis is not a crooner. It's simply Louis Prima. Louis is also the trumpet player in his songs. I always like to say that every Louis Prima ends in party no matter how it begins. 🤪
Thanks for this great reaction to the legendary Louis Prima. I have to echo what a lot of comments here stated: he’s not really primarily (or Prima-really) a crooner (although occasionally he croons). He’s more of an outright jazz singer and player with lots of Italian and New Orleans spice thrown in.
Awwww snap😊 my man louis🤘❤️. He kills the Italian language😂😂😂 buts thats he grew up speaking. Named my daughter after this song, and prima is a must at any Italian wedding
When I was young I'd make fun of "the adults" for their music such as this kind of stuff.
Time passed..."Big Night" came out in theaters. Watched it. Touching.
Hey, what's that music that's so catchy? Louis Prima?
Yup. Life played its trick on me. What I used to mock became something I loved.
Louis Prima FTW!
Sam Butera is the saxophone player, give Bim Bam a listen, he plays and sings in it.
Bad boy
Check out Lou Bega - "Mambo No. 5" - a more contemporary Mambo, which hit the #1 spot in practically every chart in the world, and was the #1 song of the year in a dozen countries in 1999.
Louis Prima, Keeley Smith, and Tenor Saxophonist Sam Butera are definitely unsung heroes of Rock and Roll, as well as Jazz and Italian Music.
If you can get a live video of their Las Vegas 1950s act on CZcams, you will see Louis and the band moving around as Keeley stands there looking bored. Its hilarious.
Some of their hits were That Old Black Magic, The Just a Gigolo / I ain't got Nobody medley, Oh Marie, and the rockers Jump Jive and Wailin', Hey Boy Hey Girl, and Night Train.
Thanks so much for reacting to Louis Prima!
His wife Keely Smith was a 'Straight Man' for his wild antics and she was an awesome Jazz singer :)
The true king of swing . The first true pioneer of rock n roll. His backing band the Witnesses were the envy of every front man. The dudes were cats. The rest were called( sguares )that followed the trends of the day. Much love . P. S. Kelly Smith Is a legend in her own right.
They should do Angelinas "Release Me" next
Crazy Mary is my favorite song by Louie.
Louis Prima was a headliner in Vegas, premier night clubs , and television variety shows in the 1950’s and until the mid 1960’s. His back up band was small group of sensational musicians lead by saxophonist Sam Butera. Louis was energetic but it was his animated behavior that was memorable . His wife was the glamours beautiful, and tall Keely Smith. She would look like a fashion model, wear high heels that seemed to make her tower over Louis, have a great voice but have. Look of total disdain, boredom with Louis antics and deliver absolutely funny quips usually at Louis expense All you needed was to see short squat Louis acting like he sounded, the band rocking, and Keely with no expression either looking bored or singing perfectly to match the song and atmosphere It made no sense but it was entertaining, joyous, and a treat I saw them so many times on tv during the years… you knew what was going to happen, they never sang the same song or one you had heard them sing, and 5 to 7 minutes later you were sad it was over. I suggest you try to find a You Tube video showing Louis, Keely, and Sam and if you do, you can see why they weeds headliners in Vegas and in demand for a long time
:) In Disney's Jungle Book cartoon Louie is the voice of King Louie the orangutan who wanted Mowgli to teach him how to make fire. Unforgettable scene with lots of scatting and fantastic horn section, from his Louis Prima band. Fun stuff.
***Must do "Closer to the Bone"..... one of Louis Prima's BEST songs!!!****
The Italian part is sung in The Godfather Part 1 beginning wedding scene.
I remember going Downtown to a Movie Theater to see a "Closed Circuit Television" broadcast of the Beatles back in the 60's. Louie Prima & Keely Smith were their opening act. Now that was a culture clash. LOL It was quite interesting.
If you like this Italian novelty song, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check out Rosemary Clooney's Mambo Italiano and Botch-A-Me. She is one of my favorite singers-SO underrated.
Nothing wrong with a bit of jazz in the morning:)
Louie!
And Hey Boy Hey Girl, Banana Split for my Baby... so many!
You should check out Rosemary Clooney “ Mombo Italiano” she’s amazing. I grew up on Italian-American music and she is one of my favorites
The Italian part is in the beginning of the Godfather during the wedding scene. When i was a kid i heard it all the time at gatherings especially weddings.
