One of Sammy’s biggest hits was “The Candy Man”. Sammy was super talented. He could dance, sing, play drums and act. An all around entertainer.
Yes I Agree 👍💯
Absolutely loved "The Candy Man", as a kid, growing up!
Or Mr. Bojangles
That would be my choice from Sammy Davis Jr also plus my favorite by him.
@@dianetaylor841 I love that song, but the version done by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Along with House At Pooh Corner.
Sammy's "What Kind of Fool Am I?" will blow you away.
Sammy was a child savant entertainer, and carried over in a huge way as he matured
Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the most talented performers around. He could do it all: sing, dance, act, played several instruments, composed music, you name it. His inclusion in the Rat Pack did a lot to bring black performers fully into the dominant entertainment markets. Jay would love looking into the parallels of the Rat Pack and the growth of Las Vegas. A lot of things came together in Vegas.
pure talent and kissed "Archie Bunker" on the show "All in the Family" was a riot to see
You have to go back and watch that episode of “All in the Family “. It was a 70s sitcom that pushed the envelope and got people talking about. Remember it was before all the technology, so everyone had to watch it at the same time.
My brother in-law was Sammy's cousin so I am fortunate enough to hold a Golden Key to his gravesite in Forest Lawn. He is the G.O.A.T.
Sammy Davis Jr. Was one of biggest and most popular entertainers of 60's. 🎉🎉🎉
Sammy Davis Jr was overall the most talented of all the Rat Pack imo; he could sing, dance, act, do comedy and played multiple instruments. Just an all round class entertainer.
Yes he was the most talented
Love Sammy, but Frank is in his own league. You can't compare.
#1 and #1 . Sammy has always been my favorite entertainer and I Got to Be Me my favorite song. Doesn't get better than that.
Sammy Davis started as a child in Vaudeville to Broadway to Vegas. Great dancer, movie actor he could do it all.
What Kind of Fool Am I..........is a SDJ classic.
I read his life story. Amazing story...
Jay & Amber, you’ll love his versions of "Love Me or Leave Me" and “That Old Black Magic”!!!
"Love Me or Leave Me" features him scatting!!
Yes, Sammy could do it all, sing, act and dance!!!!
I love his version of 'that Old Black Magic'! Also they should listen to 'Lonely is the Name'.
I'm in tears what a great voice and message in this song.Sammy is a LEGEND
Sammy was the GOAT!
His biggest hit was "Candy Man." It reached #1.
Living in Vegas since the 70's, I've been lucky to have seen them all. However, Sammy was the best. He could do it all.
Outstanding song by an outstanding singer.
Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the greatest entertainers EVER!! He did everything!! He started as a child star tap dancing with his family, and continued into superstardom!
Sammy was far and away one of the most talented artists in Hollywood. And, as a side note, he was known for being the fastest draw in town with a Western Cowboy holster and revolver.
Now that you mention it I remember seeing a rerun of an old TV western where SD Jr played a gunslinger....or something like that.
Absolutely, he played in the Rifleman, a great story. R.I.P. Sammy ❤️🙏😢
Absolutely, he played in the Rifleman, a great story. R.I.P. Sammy ❤️🙏😢
Not only fast but could do so many gun holster tricks.
@@robert-ef8qv The Rifleman is on CZcams
I read Sammy Davis Jr's autobiography in high school, "Yes I Can: The Story of Sammy Davis Jr.", not for an assignment just because I wanted to know more about him because he was on TV all the time. Talk shows, variety shows, sitcoms, he was everywhere. It was from reading his story I learned that he lost an eye in an auto accident when he hit his face on the steering wheel of the car he was driving. I;m in awe of his talent because he could do anything. Got a thrill from seeing such a big voice come from a man of small stature but huge presence. Glad you guys like this.
that's a great book
My favourite songs by Sammy Davis Jr are:
"What Kind of Fool Am I",
"The Candy Man",
"Something's Gotta Give",
"Rhythm of Life",
"Who Can I Turn To",
"Hallelujah I Love Her So",
"Me and My Shadow (with Frank Sinatra)",
"Sam's Song (with Dean Martin)".
There are many other tracks but these are good ones to continue with.
Sammy played the Devil in the movie version of "Porgie and Bess" which contains him singing "It Ain't Necessarily So".
The actual role he played is Sportin' Life
I remember watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson many years ago, where Sammy was the musical guest. He started singing "To Dream The Impossible Dream" from the Man of La Mancha. He stopped about 30 seconds in and apologized to Johnny , the band, and to the entire audience, in house and out in TV land. He was sincerely upset, he felt that he wasn't giving it his all and was letting everyone down. He gathered himself for a few moments, started the song over and just belted it out and brought the house down and the audience up on their feet for a standing ovation. That's who Sammy Davis was, I'll never forget it.
R.I.P To A Great Singer Actor Sammy Davis Jr, Still Miss Him Always 😢,I Have All His Greatest Hits
He was in a movie called "Tap" 1989 with Gregory Hines, Harold Nicholas and Savion Glover. It was Sammy's last feature film appearance.
I knew it was going to be his last one 😢 that was a very good excellent movie 🎥 those who haven't seen it yet should Gregory Hines making the movie along with his two idols along with Harold Nicholas. Gregory Hines also a great tap dancer too along with his brother .
Sammy use to entertain on the street as a small child....singing and dancing for change. He's always been working it!
One of the best voices ever.
The legend Sammy Davis jr .nice choice
His best IMO. Just stunning and so gorgeous with that unique and beautiful voice of his.
Not necessarily Rat Pack but Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme were from that era and a staple on television during my childhood.
Sammy was the CONSUMMATE ENTERTAINER!!! I just LOVED SAMMY!! RIP, SIR!!! YOU are MISSED!!! Great pick, you-guys!! HUGS!
I had forgotten how good of a singer Sammy really was. I think this is his best song. His voice was so strong and powerful, and he hit each note flawlessly.
Timeless music! Sammy Davis will still be listened to a hundred years from now!
Rob, you can't just like Sammy Davis Jr. You have to loooove him!!!!!!!! 💗💗💗💗
Always hard to tell but he always gave me the impression of being a lovely man. An original by him and a classic.
His performance of What Kind of Fool Am I is da bomb. Great song by Anthony Newly and a great performance.
"Oceans 11" (1960, black and white) is a movie that all 5 members of the original Rat Pack got together and starred in, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. Lawford was a Hollwood actor for 30 years and was married to John F. Kennedy's sister for 12 years, during the Rat Pack heyday. Joey Bishop was an early television personality and tv talk show host who fit in well the carousing lifestyle. The movie is about a casino heist (remade in 2001). Something for J to watch on a lonely Saturday night and catch up on his history.
Yes, they should react to that ( though it is in color ).
Way better than the remake!
The original ocean 11 that was a good movie 🎥🍿 flick the ending was a Tripp 😂 those who haven't seen the original you should .
"Robin and the Seven Hoods" Set in Chicago during Prohibition, the Rat Pack's take on the Robin Hood legend finds bootlegger Robbo (Frank Sinatra) and his cronies refusing to pay the greedy Guy Gisborne (Peter Falk) a cut of their profits after Guy shoots mob boss Big Jim (Edward G. Robinson) and takes over. When Big Jim's daughter, Marian (Barbara Rush), gives Robbo a large sum of money, believing he has avenged her father's death, the gangster donates it to an orphanage, cementing his reputation as a softhearted hood.
You should definitely do ocean's 11 for film Friday. Great movie with the original rat pack
A song that’ll give you goosebumps
The Impossible Dream
Sung by Jim Nabors
One of the best biographies i ever read was Yes I Can by SammybDavis. Incredible performer. Inspirational and he was a trailblazer. This song was written by Anthony Newley who was once married to Joan Collins. He overcame prejudice. Not allowed to stay at hotels but could perform there. A leader of the civil rights movement. Read his book.
Over the decades I'd forgotten what great pipes Mr. Davis had. Once again you young sprouts educate this old fart. Thank you kindly. (I hope that made you smile. I've made two smiles today and that would put me over the top, lol.)
I saw him in a show called 'Golden Boy' at the London Palladium many years ago. He was just phenomenal. Sammy could sing the phone book. No one sings 'the Birth of the Blues' like him!
Sammy did it all. He was a great impersonator as well as dancer, singer, actor. He sings like he's on Broadway.
Literally, one of the greatest musicans of all time. A true musical genius. His legacy will continue to that of a Beethoven or a morazt. His music is timeless. He wasn't just a typical pop artist, he was a real artist that had changed music forever.
Aw you must see him sing live. Sammy was a true full body performer.
Best cover by Sammy David Jr.: "wichita lineman".
He brought the funk. ❤
A member of the Rat Pack along with Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, and Joey Bishop. Sammy Davis was the most multitalented of the Rat Pack. He became an actor and was amazed at the fame of Elvis. He said when Elvis came to Vegas people came from all over the world. Sammy Davis Jr. Was part of the American Classic era. Linda Ronstadt sang two American Classics albums “What’s New” is beyond perfect. Sammy Davis stands alone and was not afraid to take on acting roles that were tough. He was an evil pimp In Porgy and Bess and yet some of the most memorable music came from that operetta. I can never say enough about Sammy Davis Jr.
One of the great vocalists that few recognize today. This is one of my favorites from him. Sammy does a great version of Anthony Newley's two songs "What Kind Of Fool Am I" and "Who Can I Turn To". Newley also wrote the big hit for Davis "Candy Man" which was a tepid little children's song and hardly as deep or as moving as any of these three songs. Sammy though was one of the great tap dancers of his era and could play virtually every instrument in a big band orchestra. He was perhaps the most talented performer ever to grace the stage. This song came from the Broadway show "Golden Rainbow". The two Newley songs came from the Broadway musicals "Stop The World I Want To Get Off", and "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd", both written by Newley. Newley also wrote the great song "Feelin' Good" which has been covered by many people over the years. The definitive version of that is by Nina Simone, after which everyone to this day has copied her arrangement.
"I've Gotta Be Me" is a popular song that appeared in the Broadway musical Golden Rainbow, which starred Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé. It opened in New York City at the Shubert Theatre on February 4, 1968, and closed just under a year later, on January 11, 1969.
I remember watching Johnny Carson one night when he had Truman Capote on as a guest. I don't know how the conversation came around to Sammy Davis, Jr. but Capote was obviously not a fan. He said Sammy sounded like everybody else and you wouldn't know if you weren't told who was singing. Carson looked at him like he had two heads and told him he was definitely wrong. You know Davis' voice when you hear it. Hooray for Johnny! 'Cause Johnny Carson was spot on. Sammy Davis, Jr. doesn't sound like everyone else and you know when he's the man singing - beautiful voice!
Hmm I am 63 yrs old and I always thought this was Frank Sinatra singing. Wow I was wrong! Amazing voice!
Sammy’s appearances on Laugh In were epic!
😂😂😂 Here comes The judge, Here comes The judge 😂
As far as I'm concerned, he's one of the greatest entertainers of all time. TY for reacting to this amazing man. You need to hear his "Birth of the Blues"... You will LOVE IT!
One of the greatest all around entertainers ever. Actor, singer, dancer and I believe he could draw a pistol from a holster faster than anyone in Hollywood. Started in show business when he was a child with his father and uncle. Superstar!
My favorite person to sing this song. Sammy was one of the greatest all around entertainers ever.
Mr Entertainment. Never has been anyone else quite like him. Sing, Dance, Act, play instruments, hilariously funny comedian, impersonator. Literally everything. Oh and he was one of those entertainer's that was always better live on stage.
He was one of the most talented men ever. Great singer, dancer and actor.
'The dog up and died.' And after 34 years, we still weep. RIP Sammy.
The absolute best live performer Ive had the pleasure to watch. This man was born to the stage and was the ultimate professional entertainer. Saw a show he did on a Saturday night in Los Angeles where he lived at the time. Put on a two hour no stop no intermission show, amazing singing, dancing, impressions you name it. End of the show he tells the audience “I’m allowed to stay out a little longer you folks got anywhere to be? I’m throw the orchestra a little extra green and we jam for a while.” Well the place goes crazy. He spent an additional two hours singing requests from the audience interviewing audience members doing impersonation of famous actors telling stories of dancing with his father and uncle at 5 years old. Just amazing like sitting in the living room visiting with good friends. He just had a magic connection with a live audience. Two of my favorites are Birth of the Blues and Candy Man
I had the privilege of hearing Sammy live at the Thomas and Mack in Vegas a few years before he died. I was blown away at how powerful and clear the sound was coming out of that physically small man. He had the voice of a giant.
I love Sammy Davis Jr. . He was one of those super entertainers. He could sing, dance, act, etc. . I read his autobiography "Yes, I Can " when I was in school. I really admire him as a person and an entertainer.
Fun fact about Sammy Davis Jr! He was a fast draw artist! Yes how fast you can draw your pistol! So was Jerry Lewis! Never heard who was the fastest, but both were very good at it! Y'all need to listen to the Candyman by Mr Sammy Davis Jr
I’ve loved Sammy since I was a child. While on vacation with my parents, it turned out that Sammy was performing at the hotel lounge. I begged my Dad to get tickets, and he did. It was 1969 in the Bahamas, and he experienced some major issues there. I had no idea at the time as I was only 8. He was class and talent, and I still love him. 💜
It's always been on my playlisthours cause I love it. Not. I love it every day. I put some left down there with this song. Now i'm doing it whatever dies why are they
Davia ILK software software, a wife walks softly out of song. It's a kentucky head hunters they got a video
Old Time Classic... Not a Big Man, but a Big Voice!! Great Choice & Great Reaction, You Guys! :)
What an entertainer. He was a major celebrity in the 1960’s and 70’s. Great song.
Sammy could kiss the sky and make the world better.
I loved Sammy when I was a kid, my mum and I watched him whenever he was on tv.
Continue to R.I.P Mr Sammy Davis Jr ❤ you are. missed. Thanks again Jay and Amber 😊
One of the best all-around entertainers. he was a good actor, a good singer, and could play many different instruments.
His song and dance number Bang Bang from Robin and the Seven Hoods is astounding. He can do it all. ❤
Feeling Good cover by Sammy Davis Jr. You won't regret it
One of the greatest entertainers ever.
Listen to "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Birth of the Blues", and the Theme from Baretta ("Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow").
Sammy Davis could do it all. He could dance, sing, act . . . you name it. He has a voice that makes you think, How does that little guy (he was a small man in size) put out that sound. WOW
Sammy Davis, Jr. was THE consummate entertainer!
Sammy Davis Jr had a soothing, velvet voice. One of the all-time great entertainers. Singing, dancing, acting, Sammy had it all.
Sammy was one of the most talented entertainers of his time.
This is one of my favorite by Sammy Davis Jr. He was a great performer.
Sammy was a brilliant man. His talent was outstanding and his quality as a human being was outstanding.
Always loved the “ Eye of the Sparrow “ by Sammy. Was the tv theme song for a cop show -Barretta-
And you can take that to the bank Tony Barretta( Robert Blake)
Sammy Davis is the GOAT . Listen to What Kind of Fool am I . Just beautiful!
PS . Listen to the live version from the Andy Williams Show ! Phenomenal!!
Sammy Davis Jr. was one of THE BEST ENTERTAINERS I have ever seen!!! Another new entertainer you would love is Della Reese. Please give her a chance! I've requested her before and you still haven't checked her out!
Sammy was fanominol!
He was so talented and he did all aspects of entertainment!
I was blessed to have been born in 1960 and seen him in shows movies sitcoms singing and entertainment shows yeah he was awesome!
Sammy was one of the greatest entertainers of all time. In fact, he was so well rounded that he could do impressions, play various instruments, was a world class tap dancer AND a great singer. The only other entertainer who comes close to Sammy in versatility was Michael Jackson.
This particular song was a bit of a theme song for Sammy and Sammy nailed it out of the park. Sammy did fall into the trap of schmaltz but it almost always turned out really well. Sammy was definitely the showman of the Rat Pack. His music often had a very broadway feel to it and he played to his audiences in concerts in a way that the others didn't necessarily do.
Not forget Tom Jones when it comes to versatillity..
I love his version of "What Kind of Fool Am I." Well worth your time, as well as a lesser known recording called "Lonely is the Name."
My Dad passed away last year at the beautiful age of 91. Sammy Davis Jr. and the Rat Pack were his absolute favourites. I grew up on this. Thank you ❤
One of the greatest entertainers ever - he could do it all.
I very young in the heyday of the Rat pack. As much as I enjoyed Frank Sinatra musically, I was not much of a fan of the man himself. But Sammy Davis Jr. was different. Great musically, but an imcredible person. On talk shows, he didn't just keep you smiling, but often had people laughing. Just a really enjoyable person; the kind of person you'd want as a friend. His back story is incredible.
Sammy!
Mr. Entertainer.
Actor, Singer, Trick Shooter, Musician, Tap Dancer, Dancer, Author, Comedian, Movie Star, and a co-founder of the so- called Rat Pack.
Helluva drummer.
Helluva saxophonist/ clarinetist.
Pianist, organist, keyboardist.
Overall Talent!
Fabulous man who paved the way for a young person like me to see someone who looks like me, be so amazingly talented.
I stand on his shoulders.
Truly one of the best songs in the history of history.
One of my favorite performers of all time. You should check out "Bang Bang" from the movie "Robin and the Seven Hoods"...it showcases Sammy's singing and dancing ability, and is one of my personal favs.
I love this song. I used to sing this when a person in my family didn’t approve of my ways. “ I Gotta Be Me! “ Sammy had a hit song called, The Candy Man! “ We Baby Boomers loved Sammy Davis Jr. RIP ♥️. 💜💜
FYI. The Rat Pack was not just three singers. Joey Bishop was a comedian primarily and Peter Lawford was an actor if I recall
Short and quick history.. about 39-40 years before He was in Broadway.. he was a member if the Will Maston Trio. As a dancer and entertainer.. for many years before his debut on Broadway..
Frank Sinatra always insisted that Sammy had the greatest voice of all time, but not only was Sammy a great singer he was a great comedian and dancer as well. A pure entertainer. A story I've heard so many times was when they were starting out and just making it Frank Sinatra got a contract to sing at a venue and he wanted Sammy to join him but they wouldn't let him because of his colour. Frank marched in and tore up his contract and never performed for that venue or the owners again.
Frank was also the best man at Sammy's wedding to May Britt, a Swedish actress, in 1960 - when it was still illegal in most of the US for white and Black people to be married. A real one
I will, respectfully, offer a correction. While Frank insisted that Sammy was the greatest overall entertainer of all time, he insisted that Judy Garland had the greatest voice of all time. He was quoted as saying that if every singer -- included himself -- were to be forgotten, there was only one to whom that would never happen...and that was Judy. May they all RIP.
Greatest talent ever, bigger and much more an entertainer rhan even the fantastic Prince.
He starred in an episode of the "Wild, Wild West". That proves what a great entertainer he is . He can do anything, dance, sing. He can do it all!!
Legendary 🎶 Icon, Mr. Entertainer ! The 🍬 Man , Mr. Bojangles ,The one and only Sammy Davis Jr.
Sammy started performing with his Dad and Uncle at the age of 5, on the old Chittlin Circuit. This was a group of places that black performers played at for Black people.
It's so easy to forget that I was blessed to hear true singers and to witness the best of the best!!!!!
Sammy Davis, Capital label 2/21/1949 The Way You Look Tonight. He sings the song modulating into vocal impressions of boy singers of the day, pick out the voices of Al Jolson, Nat King Cole, Frankie Laine, Vaughn Monroe and Billy Eckstine....but not in that order. Good luck.
A great song by Sammy Davis Jr.
This song sounds theatrical because it was from the Broadway play Golden Rainbow, starring Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé. The play ran for less than a year in 1968/69. I've Got to Be Me was released as a single with Steve Lawrence, but only hit #6 on the Easy Listening charts. Sammy's version, I've Gotta Be Me, peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, stayed in the Top 40 for 11 weeks, and was #1 on the Easy Listening chart.
Sammy Davis Jr. started in vaudeville when he was a child as part of the Will Mastin Trio . .He was the ultimate entertainer. He could sing, act & was a fabulous dancer. He was great at impressions, too.
