No other singers voice comes close to Karen Carpenter’s. I’m 70 and still haven’t heard one. She was truly a gift from God. Blessed her with an angelic voice.
I pray that Karen was aware of how many smiles she put on people's faces.Her voice lifted us up when we were down.And her voice comes once in a lifetime.🙂👍👍

@@garyspillett7103 Aretha is one of the best ever... My favorite little TV snippet though, is when Karen does a medley with Ella. You can already see Karen starting too look thinner, so sad. But just listen to here voice... If you watch closely you'll see Ella give Karen a compliment on her singing right as Karen was singing... From freaking Ella. Karen died 40 years ago today. One of the great female voices. Loved your reaction. Young people hearing the voice for the first time. Never forget as well what Richards arrangements brought to the music. Continue to rest Karen. Always missed.

I'm 61 years old..when I was at Montecito union elementary school in Montecito california..the carpenter's came to have a concert at the Santa Barbara Bowl..I was a singer in the music class..our music teacher went to school with karen...I was chosen to sing backup with 5 other kids on stage for the song..sing..sing as song..we sang it and a girl behind me stumbled and accidentally pushed me off the stage..I jumped back up..crawled up that wall with 2 teeth knocked out and finished the song..after the concert..Karen carpenter invited me back stage..Gave me a huge hug..and gave me a personally signed album..I miss this woman so much..just an angel...r.i.p.
"Haunting" is the perfect way to describe Karen's voice...it reaches down and touches the bottom of your soul. Arguably the greatest female vocalist of all time...left this world WAY too soon.
I'm surprised that Rolling Stone only rated her 94 on the list of all time best voices. It's not a terrible rating, to be included is great, but I'd say at least 85, if not higher.

The greatest pop female vocalist of all time (in this universe) was Ella Fitzgerald. Ms. Carpenter, however, is somewhere near. The pitch, the timbre, the control......phew!

I am 43, Blackity Black, and only heard her sing this last year. I grew up thinking this was a Luther Vandross song. And my reaction was similar...she was a TALENT. Shame the world lost her so soon. Nothing beats the original.

Leon Russell wrote this song (RIP). He said he always set out to write songs that would become standards. Superstar and Masquerade were two of his most successful songs to become standards.

She was masterful, no one else like her. She died from a heart attack due to anorexia nervosa, one of the saddest and biggest losses in the music world. Her voice can stir emotions in an instant, knowing her personal life makes it even more powerful.

When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's we considered the Carpenters "corney" and "goody goody". But make no mistake, Karen Carpenter may have the best female pop voice ever. She was an immense talent.
I was a teen in the 60’s and 70’s with many genres of rock music to listen to, but I also liked the Carpenters. At that time, they were played on the same radio stations as Hendrix, Bowie, etc. This was before the stations started to choose whichever category of music they would specialize in, in order to sell more advertising.

I realize life is different for everybody. Yes I understand that you had a different perspective towards life 'then' than you do 'now', that is the same with me. People also forget that she had really impressive jazz chops with her drumming and she had the ability to sing and play simultaneously seemingly without effort. She played in Richard’s jazz combo and then played drums in the Carpenters live until they made her come out from behind those drums and take center stage.
Same. I used to hear them in the dentist office and when I would hear them as I grew up it would remind me of going to there. The older I got the more I appreciated their music.

My two favorite singers both came out of the 1970's when I was just a kid and both have been referred to as "The Voice." Karen Carpenter & Steve Perry.

Long before the days of "Auto-Tune." The days when one had to rely upon raw talent.
This song was originally called Groupie and was written and recorded by Bonnie and Delaney in colaboration with Leon Russell. The Carpenter's version came out in 1971. Karen was just 21 years old. This recording was done in one take. No edits, no punching in and out and no autotune! Karen sang _hill she read the lyrics off of a napkin after hearing the original song one time. She recorded many songs in one take earning her the name "One Take Karen'" She was also a,wonderful drummer. Unfortunately, Karen died in 1983 at the age of 32 from a heart attack brought on by complications of the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. It was,a sad day!

The Carpenters were not the "original" version of Superstar. "Superstar" is a 1969 song written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell, with a songwriting credit also given to Delaney Bramlett, that has been a hit for many artists in different genres in the years since. The best-known versions are by the Carpenters in 1971, and by Luther Vandross in 1983.
In its first recorded incarnation, the song was called "Groupie (Superstar)", and was released in December 1969 as the B-side of the Delaney & Bonnie single "Comin' Home".
I've listened to it and The Carpenters version out performs the original by a mile! Their version made this song popular to cover, which Luther did the same year Karen left us.

When I was young, I listened to the Carpenter's music on the radio every day.
When Karen passed, I was too young to understand that I would never hear her like again.
Think about that....fifty years later....there has never been anyone who has sung like her !!

There were a lot of great singers in the 70's, and of course since then, but I don't think anyone then or since could match Karen's vocals, they were so pure, powerful, and beautiful.

Your reaction was beautiful. Karen had a lot of inner demons and I really think she expressed what she was feeling in her vocals. She had an amazing way of drawing you in and feeling the emotion of what she was singing. Her voice is truly haunting..spot on. The only other person that I think really comes to having some of those same vocal sounds and this might sound corny is Olivia Newton-John. She and Karen were very good friends and now I just vision them singing together since they both have passed. Thank you for sharing this reaction.
Karen did not have demons. She did not know how to defend herself from demons. She was gifted with amazing timing and rhythm. When they wouldn't let her stay behind the drums, they we're slowly killing her for money. The greater the artist, the more vulnerable they are. This needs to be understood, and they need to be protected. In memory of Karen Carpenter, Michael Jackson, Prince, Jimmy Hendrix, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Curtis Cobain, John Belushi, Elvis, Mark Rothko, Van Gogh, John Lennon, etc....
"Demons" has a connotation that doesn't fit Karen, as it would someone of low character. She struggled with a serious eating disorder, which eventually affected her heart. But almost everyone knew her as a sweet girl. Beautiful and genuine reaction by host, to hearing Superstar sung by Karen for the first time. Also, another appreciation of it I recently found here, was one by The Vocalyst, well worth searching for.

Watching your jaw drop as you listened to Karen's voice in a look of awe was precious, and the tears you held back as she moved your soul with just the first verse was the ultimate compliment. Thank you for this wonderfully honest reaction video, because it helped me vicariously feel the first time I must have reacted to the song myself. This is a classic and through the years, with constant repetitions, my ears have become jaded and so used to it that it lost the magic to me. Make no mistake, I still love this song and I love the Carpenters, but reacting to you reacting to the song was so emotional for me, had to fight back the tears myself! I was a huge Carpenters fan back when Karen was still with us. Her vocal styling and timbre put their music in another sphere. You had a very discerning reaction to this song and Karen's delivery. I'm happy that some of the younger generation appreciate good music and will help keep songs and artists like this alive.

That is not the original version of "Superstar", but the most definitive, and likely the most listened to, a song written by Leon Russell and Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. The depth of her tonality, the richness of her voice, her control at the lower register, the perfect vibrato, combined with the arrangement by her very talented brother Richard, make this cover the best. Like you, tears fill my eyes when listening to her voice. The voice.
Correct, the original version was called Groupie Superstar and in Bonnie’s recording the line “i can hardly wait to be with you again” instead is “hardly wait to sleep with you again”, the Carpenters tweaked it to make it more radio friendly
@@mporth I think it was actually Rita Coolidge that sang that version. She toured with Delaney and Bonnie and friends at that time. Peace.
She WAS sad...and she never understood or could accept how deeply she moved people with that sweet, lovely, and yes, hauntingly beautiful voice. We lost her way to soon. Yes, please react to Solitaire. One of her greatest. And Richard’s arrangements are minimal which I love.
She was not a sad person - overall, she was upbeat and happy-go-lucky and positive - there were a few incidents in her life that made her temporarily sad (like all of us) but she wasn't a chronically sad or depressed woman - like any really good singer she acted her way thru sad songs - her obsession with weight loss (which eventually killed her) was her one major problem...see Randy Schmidt's book "Little Girl Blue".
Oh yes. When it comes to her vocals, delivery of the song, and Richard's arrangements "Solitaire" is my favorite of all they did. Karen's delivery of those lyrics, my gawd. Even Neil Sedaka himself, who wrote it, mentions their version and praises Karen's delivery of the song.
Her whole life she tried to get acceptance from her mother. She never did. Her mother even said she loved her brother more. Sad.

I've watched you in this video at least 50 times! I'm a 57 year old white guy born and raised in the midwest. I grew up listening to the Carpenters. When I was young it wasn't cool to be a Carpenters fan. We were rockers! But we've all grown up and gotten over all that bullshit. She was truly a gift to us. Her voice is so rich and so full of emotion! Congratulations on discovering her. There's lots more!

I actually saw that duet with Ella for the first time last week. Ella Fitzgerald is considered a great singer, but in that duet it is apparent from the start that there is no comparison to Carpenter.

I was raised on Karen and Richard, and even today, some 50 years later, no matter what I am doing, I stop when I hear her voice. One of the best voices of all time. A channel called Wings of Pegasus does a computer analysis of her voice and finds her pitch-perfect, better in person than recorded; not many artists can say that. Remember, before dubbing, double, triple dubbing, and computer enhancement, her voice was pure and near perfect; the response some 50 years later is still the same. If you like her, as I can tell you do, have a listen to Allison Kraus, another gal with an incredible and to use your words "Haunting" voice. Thank you, your face tells it all.
Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell wrote Superstar. The Carpenters did this 11 years before Luther. Both are great renditions of this great song.

There are other videos of Karen Carpenter singing this live, but this is my favorite, because of the way she comes out onto the dark stage and embodies the person she is representing in the song from start to finish. Otherworldly beautiful, haunting, as you said, and tragic.
The live 1971 version on BBC is actually better - and her death was tragic, but she wasn't a tragic person, or even sad or depressed...

She had the purest female alto voice you will ever hear. I was lucky enough to see them perform. She died of heart failure from anorexia. Listen to more of them.

Superstar was written by Leon Russell and a co-writer in 1969. The Carpenters were a brother/ sister act. Karen tragically died young from complications from an eating disorder.
Oh yeah, that's some performance. I have heard this recording for decades but never actually "listened" to it until just a few days ago. And I had the same reaction you did. Took the wind out of me for a few minutes. She didn't even belt out a triple high C or do any vocal gymnastics. No need to. She just made the lyrics real and believable by using every element in the production, as well as her vocal skills to convey the emotionality of the song. Gotta say, that arrangement is quite intense - yet sublime - with that oboe, strings and french horns.... and when the piano hits that growling low C at the end of the first/second verse....daaaaaagggg!!! Stellar orchestration. Stellar production. Stellar singing.
Her voice is perfection - it moved me to tears. Her music is amazing.

Ms Carpenter was near the top, but Streisand tops them all. She is and was unique and incomparable, with hits in SEVEN decades of music. SEVEN!
What a voice! Still gives me goosebumps. This was how she sounded live too. No autotune needed. She left us way too early in her life.
When you said her voice was haunting I immediately teared up. Karen had a voice like no other. Her death at such a young age was devastating. It’s wonderful that her music and incredible voice is being rediscovered by each new generation.
