    RIP Maynard. He came and performed at my high school jazz festival the year before he passed away, but I was out of town. I've been kicking myself ever since.

    Maynard makes a great point in saying "if it works, leave it alone". Lots of young trumpet players, myself included, get hung up on equipment and what it does. Admittedly, there should be some experimentation because that allows you to explore what makes you feel best. However if you end up feeling great on your 3C or Schilke 14A4a or whatever, do that! Cheers Maynard, you are missed.

      ***** I have a Schilke 13A4A, and while I haven't played much in several years, I like it better than the Bach that came with my horn. Thank God we can still listen to him here or CD's. So much better than my old vinyl!

    I Followed Maynard his work his bands and so on since the mid 70's and of course admired earlier work with Kenton and various other Big Bands. He was the Master of the Hi C's No one will ever come close. I luved his efforts in the school systems and how he'd grab up, up & Coming Musicians right out of college and give em a seat on the Band Stand and and in the Bus.

Talkin and rappin with the King of the Hi C's. I took thousands of shots and digital. Memories to last a lifetime. Maynard luved Gallo wine LOL, and Life in the JAZZ LANE ! When I heard him say Conn and Holton, I couldn't believe my ears because all I'd ever seen that they made were beginner horns and they had no good tone at all, so I guess I was wrong. While I never really pursued music after high school, I loved my Bach Strad so much that when my son was making great strides in school playing trumpet, I wasted little time in getting him a Strad also. Mine was in '76 and looks/sounds as great as it did back then, I just wish I could still make it sound so good but it would only be recreational and in a small town, it rarely happens. I think we got his in '05 when he was a soph. I was lucky enough to go to MF concerts as a jazz band school trip on 2 separate occasions and all I could do was sit there in amazement over the notes he could reach. Thank God for CD's because my vinyl is all gray and scratchy from being played so many times for so long. Thanks for uploading this!! What a great talent we lost when MF died.

      He played a Connstellation 38B which was considered a professional horn. All or most of his recordings for Roulette were done on the Connstellation. Cat Anderson, Chet Baker and Don Jacoby also played this model. He has played a variety of mouthpieces over the years - I understand at one point he was using a Parduba double-cup mouthpiece, although I do not know this for sure.

      @@steveneaklor2990 I thought I had a great mouthpiece when I went to a Schilke 14A4A because it gave me a little more range for jazz band, but I also had 3 Bach mouthpieces which all had different qualities depending on the tone I was looking for. Thanks for your knowledge on the different horns and mouthpieces. I wish I would have had internet back in the 70's to learn more about what was available.

      Also the golden years for the Connstellation 28B then 36B/38B was between 1949-1969. So yes anything after 1970 will not be as iconic of a sound 🐬

    I thought it was quite interesting that Maynard, for a long time, used v-cup mouthpieces. I played mellophone in high-school, and had a *beautiful* instrument by King which had an adapter so you could use a real "French" horn mouthpiece instead of the standard one. I thought it gave a *much* better tone (concert-horn mps are v-cupped as "standard", unlike trumpet mps), with some "roundness" to back up the "edge".

  • @AustinJohanning
    @AustinJohanning Před 16 lety

    I think he's getting at the natural intonation of the horn, so you can get a good feel for what your going to have to do to adjust (if necessary) most horns usually have some kind of imperfection...generally

    @spacepatrolman Yeah, I witnessed that as well. funny moment! mine has the engraved discs in the bell. Larry Ramirez of Holton/Leblanc told me they only made a few of those for MF. Larry told me they made them especially for him to go with the Olympic rings, when he played for the closing ceremonies for the Olympics in 76. you can see an ex. of it on youtube playing Conquistador on the Mike Douglas show.

    Save yourself a few grand, go buy a gold plated Schilke B6L or S42L. Bill Chase played a B6Lb and Roger Ingram plays a S42L. With the extra money you save, you can buy a gold plated Schilke P5-4 Picc to use on legit gigs.
