    Why are most of you hating on Bernie Dresel? He's an excellent drummer who plays with good taste.He played with Maynard Ferguson and Brian Setzer for 15 years now and also has done GREAT work on Gordon Goodwin's music which has 15 Grammy nominations so why the hate? His pinky's are out? So what? He gets the job done and is still employed when many are struggling to make a living playing music.Steve Gadd said it best" Technic doesn't mean shit unless you can play a groove and lock it in" which is exactly what Bernie does.Sorry for my rant but stop trying to be-little hard working musicians because he's trying to make an instructional video entertaining. If you've watched the amount of videos I've watched with boring monotone drummer explaining exercises that would put anyone to sleep, you'll realize this is refreshing. Keep drumming and stop the hate.

      Most of the trash talking on any drum video comes from American kids whose greatest achievement was playing snare drum in high school marching band and think they know everything about chops. I mean, those little marching band outfits are cute and all, but it doesn't mean they know anything....

    i like how he teaches. and triplet double stroke rolls are fun as hell to play. reminds me of doing paradiddles counting them as triplets. its fun too, makes me laugh. its weird when youre by yourself playing drums and end up laughing at rudiments... sometimes i fall off my drum stool.

    you get a thicker "fatter" sound on the snare if you do. you can hear the difference more clearly if you try it on the ride, the butt end has more of a blunt sound than the tip, try it.

    Its a popular thing that a lot of traditional grip players will do to get more power when needed. Obviously its not necessary for power, just about the feel. I tend to do it from time to time as well.

    @lucasathus Před 15 lety

    i think 'fulcrum' is the motion.
    fulcrum is a ''lever'' motion, the one he is doing with his right hand.
    but my question is why is he holding the drumstick with the tip and the shoulder of the stick by his wrist and the shaft and 'butt' of the stick touching the snare drum.

  • @Insanesomeone
    @Insanesomeone Před 15 lety

    This is a really crude explanation so apologies if you don't get me.
    Imagine you can play two volume levels with each hand; quite and loud. when you use matching sticks the dynamics should be identical (provided you have good technique in each hand!). Using the butt of one stick changes the dynamics in that hand, meaning that you now have four dynamics; quite and loud for the right hand, and quite and loud for the left. I hope you understand that, I didn't explain it very well!

  • @apercussionist91
    @apercussionist91 Před 14 lety

    @thecravenator42069 okay, that's not traditional grip if that's what you're talking about. You should never do a snare lick like that because of the different sound it creates. No is there possibly a place where it might be beneficial to do that? Possibly, but no one should ever do that during a long snare lick like that.

    that is a nice idea right there. double strokes but triplet based.
    (im left handed so I hereby suggest that ALL drum instruction should refer to yr strong hand as A and weak as B) so paradiddle is no longer RLRR LRLL, but ABAA BABB, which makes it easier for everyone))
    so waht this cat is playing is
    Aa bb aa, Bb aa bb, Aa bb aa, Bb aa bb....(accents in capitals)
    At first I thought he meant
    Aab Baa Bba Abb
    Which is a head fck

    Sound is important but drumming is not all about sound. its performance and showmanship too. i've been in DCI and trust me the pinky out does not fly there and it does not fly on any other percussion instrument. someone of his level of skill should know that and he should break the habit.

    @colourfulwithaU Před 14 lety

    @insanitystruck
    All fingers (including the pinky) SHOULD be under the stick. But if your pinky strays from the stick it's not that big a deal, because when you're playing matched grip, most of your finger control is in the middle and ring fingers, and the fulcrum (thumb and index) holds it up. All in all, it's about the sound you get out of the drums. Whether a drummer "looks like a pussy" or not while playing has nothing to do with how good they are.
