His brother passed away several years ago. Vince wrote the song about him. He’s sang it at several country music icons funerals. Most notably George Jones. It’s Vince Gill, Patty Loveless and Ricky Scaggs.
ALL with great voices. Vince is main singer and his is such a sweet, pure voice.
The original recording was done with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs (who both appear in this music video) in 1994, not Alison.

This long really gets me. I lost my grandpa and mama in 2019 just 9 months apart. We played this song at both their funerals.
But about this song. Vince Gill the man in the middle wrote this song after the death of his brother. The other artists with him are patty loveless she is a well know country artist. The song she done called precious memories was also played at their funerals. The other man is Ricky skaggs country and bluegrass artist my grandpa loved to listen to him and patty loveless.
In bluegrass and country music this type of singing High Lonesome. It fits this song perfectly.

Vince was the only artist to win a Grammy every year in the decade of the 90's. He is a phenomenal guitar player currently he is a member of the classic rock group the Eagles, also just released a new solo album three or four months ago.
He is nor was he ever an official member of the Eagles. Just an honorary member. Like John Stamos is with The Beach Boys.

Ricky Scaggs has been famous since childhood for his instrumental abilities. Then became a famous country singer as an adult. His family was shot at while his wife was driving. One son and his wife were shot and his son died. They have two more children I believe that are now adults.

It is a eulogic ballad. Gill began writing the song following the death of country music superstar Keith Whitley, who died in 1989. Gill did not finish the song until a few years later following the death of his older brother Bob of a heart attack in 1993. Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless both sang background vocals on the record.
This song was written for his brother but the first verse plays tribute to the life of Keith Whitley.

Vince Gill has now joined with the band the Eagles.
My older brother like myself was a huge Country music fan, this played in the funeral home during his viewing. Yes Doc, it's good to cry and this song brings the tears up even years later.
Country and Blues share their roots in Gospel music and this is a great example. Both Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs are tremendously talented guitar players with Angelic voices.

My son was murdered 4 years ago and my youngest son loves to listen to music that connects him to the angels....this is one of his favorite songs and he is only 10. Nope it IS Patty Loveless! Vince specifically chose Patty and Ricky Skaggs for their beautiful harmony. Vince and Patty sung this song at George Jones funeral. Vince was grieving after the first verse and Patty took the lead to continue singing, went over to comfort Vince until he regained composure to keep singing. Their 35+ years of close friendship showed that day and brought everyone to tears.

I can't listen to this song without crying. My Aunt died on Thanksgiving at the age of 26. This was her favorite song and they played it at her funeral. Its hard to think about the fact that I'm older now than she was when she passed
