As a fan of this game, let me from the bottom of my heart thank you for taking the time to play and enjoy it before reviewing it. Although it's review scores on steam have caught up since it's first release, it really hurt my soul to see how badly this game got bashed on it's release by knee jerk reactions that didn't even give it the time of day. The game is amazing and I hope they make more going forward. There are so many ways they can innovate the combat and farming aspects and if they keep the story at the same quality future games in this series could ABSOLUTELY rival big titles like Rune Factory (the game closest to it's intended style I feel) and that competition can only lead to better games for all sides of the fandom.
I really, really hope they make more.
Kinda upset reading the Stream reviews and then going on CZcams seeing someone bashing the story arc with Emo because all she can say during that is Meep Meep. Media illiteracy is a serious issue.
Absolutely, I hope for DLC/an expansion, I feel like it has more it could tell. But yeah, I was surprised by this title and I did read those initial reviews, which almost swayed me away with comments like how Rune Factory did all this better and I have never played Rune Factory, so the question did pop in my head, whether I should try that instead.
But honestly, I am glad I didn't and that I went "sod it, let's give Harvestella a go", because I was interested when I saw it announced and its tone and themes seem to be more what I like versus the impression Rune Factory gave. And I get the feeling Rune Factory probably does the farming elements better, but I think where Square's missed the mark on this is that they've marketed it all wrong. I feel like it's much more a love letter to traditional JRPG's which includes Harvest Moon with it. So I can understand maybe the negative reviews are because of poor expectations and people not giving it a chance or those generally looking for something more farm sim orientated.
Though I worry that it could be one of those games that ends up slipping past people's radar, especially if the view is "oh, it's a Square Enix Rune Factory clone".
@@gianghuynh9570 Whilst I cracked a road runner joke at the "meep meep" because that's what I associate the words with, but it's pretty silly to focus on that to bash a story arc, because I liked her story arc and was the first side-character's story arc I finished.

I've been enjoying Harvestella too, although I do wonder why Square Enix marketed it as a farming sim when it is much more than that. I believe that might've been done to serve the purposes of the narrative (which I won't spoil), but it's still a very puzzling decision from a marketing standpoint.
I think that's also one of the reasons why the initial reviews were so mixed -- people expecting a chill farming sim got a JRPG with a lot of drama in it, and people who are invested in story-heavy JRPGs might've just dismissed the game altogether because they believed it would only be a casual farming sim.
It feels like they made a mistake in their audience targeting, if that makes sense.
I was still a bit skeptical myself after playing the demo, but I ended up buying it in the hopes it would be deeper than it looked, and I'm glad I did, because it sure delivers a lot on that front!
It definitely feels like one of those games that could become a successful series if it got a second installment with more polish than the first title. Let's hope it sells well enough now...
Lovely review, as has been expressed by others, it's really an incredible shame that this game got so badly criticized especially in earlier reviews. This game resonated with me so much, right off the bat; it's one of the most aesthetically pleasing games I've ever seen, the music is fantastic, I love the gameplay, and the story and writing is so touching.
Appreciate the spoiler free review Happy. I’m a big JRPG fan (primarily Dragon Quest turn based style) but I recently finished up FF7 Remake and the action combat won me over. Excited to give this one a whirl!
These are basically the same thoughts I had with the game. The RPG elements were definitely more in the forefront and the farming sim aspect was mostly a means to an end when it came to making money to fuel the combat side of things. Easily my favorite game released this year and I look forward to continuing post game after the game release schedule finally gives people time to breathe. I hope the game is successful enough to get a followup since it feels like with another game they could really tighten up some of the aspects that could be tightened. I hope the writer(s) of the game get more work since I definitely enjoyed the story for this game and wasn't expecting it to be particularly moving going in but some of those sidequests, they definitely tug at the heartstrings.
Do you think it's worth it for someone who wants a lot of farming like Rune Factory or Harvest Moon? I tried the demo and felt like the farming part was going to just be kind of simple and flat and not a major part of the game.
Been playing it fairly solidly since it came out and not avoiding the main story too much and just on the epilogue now. I still wish there were more, but tbf it's still exceeded my expectations and I'm so pleased
Just coming to the end of Ch3 and I'm really loving the game so far. I'm glad there's a pretty light touch on the farming/life sim elements of the game as I'm not super into that type of game to being with but I really appreciate the elements of it supporting the action RPG stuff. The combat could definitely be smoother and more responsive but it's still perfectly workable as is. So, yeah,some things they can improve for a potential sequel of some kind but it really is a great package as is. It really gives me an old school vibe without being old school. It's the sort of thing that brings to mind that feeling of JRPGs from the PSX and even SNES era (but with a more modern take on that style of visual and graphical presentation).
Freaking loving this game. The story got me through the initial learning curve and now I'm having so much fun

Of course there is still lot of potenital, but for me it is100% worth the full price.

I'm glad to hear this about the game. I haven't had a chance to pick it up, but it's high on my list. I probably won't get a chance to tackle any solo games until the holidays, but this might be the title I pick up after I play Sekiro.

I've definitely been loving the game so far - some rougher corners here and there that I think a sequel would 100% solve (more voicework, the NPC models and their animations can feel real stilted and awkward, a few QoL issues with tracking deliveries and a few odds and ends), but I do worry it's gonna get buried, what with the new God of War game having come out, and Pokemon coming out in a few days...

Glad to see people are liking this game. I think I put over 30 hours in the demo alone before this launched, essentially speed running/ min-maxing things there, and the full game did not disappoint. In regards to the plot and the places it goes, there was one point where I was just making a material run into one of the middle/later dungeons "Vergilius" for minimal spoilers and my roommate walked into the room. He could not understand how that type of location was in this game.
Otherwise, while I will say some of it is a bit trope-y, it works far better than it should. There were a number of main story scenarios, character quests, and even NPC quests, that I could tell "Oh they're going to do this" called it right, but was still fully engaged and invested in it.
Only real negatives are some performance issues, and I think like two visual glitches that lasted less than a second each. While I believe the lack of voice acting is...noticeable, its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and I don't think those that are complaining about it would actually view the game any better if it had it. Yes, a solid voice cast would be the icing on the cake, but that's all it is.
It feels more like an Ys game than a Harvest Moon and that's exactly why I liked the Demo so much. I think I will order it now ;)
Reminds me of an Atelier game crossed with FFXIV, and I LOVE the Atelier series all the way back to its PS2 days. Not really Rune Factory or Stardew, which is why I think the game was received so negatively at first. I'm waiting for the Steam sale in a few days hoping at a slight price cut. I love how they name the octopus in the game Octopus Traveller. Well played, SE. That is what SE is good at and what I am here for. Like seriously this game actually took me away from playing God of War Ragnarok because I just enjoy the chill farming gameplay in between heavy story moments. I actually had to finish the story before I can put my mind on GoW.

it's a final fantasy lite farming game in disguise, it just removed chocobo and other usual ff identifiers/names from the game but still have elemental crystals as part pf story (or weather crystals in this case). the music, story and quest design reminds me of old ff games if they were 3d action based.
it's kinds true, it's the most jrpg game I have played in a while.
This will be considered a hidden gem in a couple of years. It is kind of the "Nier"-situation. Mainstream video game media bashed the game due to its technical limitations and as a consequence of not beating it. It doesn´t reach the same qualities as the original Nier did and certainly isn´t as brave and innovative with its themes but it is a similar niche game which is perished by those who took the time to get through the first couple of hours. There are even comparable issues like the pretty superficial combat mechanics and the soundtrack by Go Shiina also has some heavy Nier-vibes and influences imo. I really do love this game and don´t regret paying full price, it is the perfect antithesis to God of War Ragnarök at this point.
I get the feeling you might be right, because other titles being realised at this time will probably shadow it (especially with it's £50 price tag). I played the original Nier game when it came out and loved it to bits, but it was one of those underrated gems I didn't understand more people hadn't played, so I am glad to see that it got the attention it deserved in the end, even if SE are milking the Nier franchise a bit now.

My 2 bit:
The rpg gameplay side is actually quite good, story is actually interesting, with the farm side is decent okayish. The combat is actually not full action, and you have to prepare hp restoration items because you WILL take damage. The farm side can be disconnected with all the rpg side sadly, but they're your main way to make money and restoration items. I feel like they can totally make harvestella 2 with better and improved system for both the rpg and farming side

No for the house, minimal customization for your farm you can basically says iy is non existent

Been dying to hear you review this game. As much as I want that pretty Switch box, I think I might opt for the Steam version for those frames. Getting really annoyed with Switch games routinely dipping below 30. A shame the PC version doesn't have a demo though. PC games in particular need more demos so that you can test for performance before you buy. Then again, I guess Steam's refund policy now makes all games have in effect a 2 hour demo. But I still feel bad about refunding a game. Also curious how the controls work, if they are only keyboard and no mouse...

This game was unfortunately done dirty in the marketing and the demo didn't help, but this is probably my favorite JRPG in... A LONG time, lol. Having just finished the story, I will only say that I loved it and I'm looking forward to your thoughts!
"Simple but satisfying" is probably the moniker I would use for this game as well. I adored my entire playtime through it, no matter how simple some of the meat of the mechanics were. As an exrtra note, as a compulsive completionist, this game felt quite friendly to 100% without feeling too unrewarding, compared to something like Rune Factory 5 which was egregious to 100%.
I bought this knowing nothing about it and expected farming and chill time and I got feels and existential crisis instead

I loved Stardew valley but never finished the “2 year story” simply because I hated feeling rushed to get things done. It’s just not a mechanic I find even remotely enjoyable in games. Still glad to hear it get positive reviews though!
You have infinite time to get the story done here, just the days and the seasons have limits and rotate
I always found the time in stardew valley stressful. Especially when half my time was spent trying to find someone because that game (imo) doesn't have very player friendly navigation or ui.
I enjoyed the demo but felt like it just wasn't worth 90$. Looking forward to it going on sale eventually!

I admit when I played the demo I was thrown off by the whole timer thing. Reminded me too much of Lightning Returns. Good to see its not as important as it looks though. Seems like if you run out of time you just go to the next day and continue on.

Hey Mrhappy or anyone whose played the game, with the game having a calendar, seasons and farming does it the game have a time limit to finish it like Harvest Moon, Persona or the older Atelier games?
No time limit on game completion, just seasons rotating
No time limit whatsoever to finish the main story. You can live and let yourself stuck with Quietus too if you so want it.
If they had released this like six months ago when there was nothing out, I’d have been all over it. As it is I just have no time for it.
