    I nearly leaped off my chair the first time I heard this. The Beatles have been my favorite band since 1964, and in all that time I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of Beatles covers that I consider comparable to the originals. This is one of them. To take one of the most beautiful melodies John Lennon ever created and make it even more beautiful is an extraordinary accomplishment bordering on genius imo.

    Across the Universe is one of my favorite songs of all time. And when Aurora covered it, I melted completely. When she added "I am gonna save my world" at the end, I was destroyed. :D Again, thank you for this video. You pointed out the special ways Aurora and her band sing. I only know how beautiful the singing is...not why.
    And when Aurora performs at a keyboard, it almost seems as if she has 4 arms. There is never a sense that she has stopped playing, even when both hands are in the air.

  • @saltydroog854
    @saltydroog854 Před 5 měsíci

    I agree 100% about everyone facing each other. She almost seems to drag the meter at times...starting and stopping the unspoken metronome and speeding up and slowing it down. She almost conducts the song. What an absolutely gorgeous performance of an absolutely gorgeous song. It's not an emotional song, but this performance especially causes me such an involuntary emotional reaction...every time. And I've seen in maybe 30 times.

I think some of her most beautiful covers are covers of Leonard Cohen (Famous Blue Raincoat and So Long Marianne). Both are pretty emotional but especially So Long Marianne which was performed during a concert shortly after Leonard Cohen died (the recording is from a cell phone but not too bad considering).

      She has known Magnus and Silja since the beginning of her music career, so they know each other very well.
      Here is her first public performance on March 1st 2014 at age 17, and Magnus and Silja are there performing with her (the band formed 3 weeks before this): watch?v=n-nHFuec7_8
      This was at "Herr Nilsen" in Oslo Norway, a bar/pub with a stage and room for ~150 people but there was a line of people outside that did not get in, just from the rumors that she was good. This was a part of the "by:Larm 2014" festival (city:Noise) which is a Norwegian festival to show off new and unknown artists. Aurora, Sigrid and several other artists started their careers at this festival.
      Just 16 days later on March 17th 2014 she was performing on TV: watch?v=O2A4N2MOmMw

    John Lennon commented that this was one of the two greatest lyrics he ever wrote and quite possibly became his favorite after he added the melody.
    Lennon supported his feelings on these lyrics with the thought that if lyrics can stand on their own as poetry - not needing a melody - then magic has happened.
    *please note I am paraphrasing here but these were his thoughts recorded in an interview I came across.
    Aurora's version is quite possibly the most wonderful ever performed and recorded.

    A brilliant performance and a reaction that's also enchanting and informative. I always felt that Aurora's little melodic changes near the end are the utmost highlights of this, and was glad that you picked up on them too. There is another version of this, where she doesn't play the keys - it's just as good, but perhaps even more visually arresting.
