@@becklebooks Zahel is a Cognitive Shadow stapled back onto a body by the Shard Endowment to fulfill a specific Intent (the Returned in general). That's who "she" is. The fused are the same, done by Odium. Heralds too, with Honor. Kelsier has also accomplished this. The shades from Silence for Shadows are the same idea, as was Eshonai for a bit during her final flashback, but they didn't/don't have ways to get back to a body. Turning into a CS happens with direct interference from a Shard, or can happen temporarily if you are heavily invested at the time of death, though it wears off that way unless you get creative like Kelsier did.

I just finished this book and this is my favorite Stormlight book and my favorite book of all time. This is the ONLY book where I’ve cried as much as I have, especially reading Part 5. I had no issues at all, NONE, it was so fast paced and I didn’t think I’d care about the Listeners and I did, I really did. And ironically, the ONLY flashback in the Stormlight books that I’ve ever cried in(the others I sobbed, a few tears, this one I broke down for minutes on end) was Eshonai’s final send-off. Oh my goodness, I didn’t realize how much I had actually come to love the Listeners as much as I did in this book. People are saying the flashbacks didn’t do it for them because it was like “we already knew” what was going on, but the flashbacks worked for me because they finally humanized the singers, and the story of the Listeners is really tragic. I mean, look at the progression with which we saw the Parshendi-
    1. TWOK- inhumane beasts who have an air of mystery about them, why did they kill Gavilar?
    2. WOR- desperate foes who upon realizing their numbers are dwindling, have to make certain scary choices.
    3. Oathbringer- almost completely extinct. We still don’t know their full story but we get hints that there is more to it when it is said that humans are the real Voidbringers,
    4. Rhythm Of War- the book where they get to shine. Where it is revealed that at their core, all they were trying to do is to prevent the end of the world as a result of a selfish human and retain their independence. Where they were all just used as pawns in this war. Odium and Ulim actively manipulated them to their extinction, preying upon the weakness of a young Listener who realized that their freedom wasn’t real if humans were indoctrinated into them, and by Humans also, who were bringing back their gods, hence making them lose their independence. At their core, they were just a normal people, having fun, jumping chasms and laughing, when unfortunately, fate decided to take a different course and they had to take drastic measures to adapt to this, leading to their near extinction.
The story of the Listeners is really sad. All Eshonai wanted to do was explore, all they wanted to do was be united, all Venli wanted to do was retain her freedom and her paranoia(rightfully so) got the best of her. What happened to them wasn’t fair at all. At the end of the day, what they tried SO HARD to avoid at all costs ended up happening to them, despite their strenuous efforts.
I mean, this is only reinforced by including Raboniel. Man! This was REALLY the book of the Listeners where if this book doesn’t win them over to you, then none will.
And I think this book has the best title in the whole series. Rhythm Of War is such a fitting title, both literally and figuratively in the sense it really goes into details about what war does to a person/people and what it can drive them to do.
I believe that, even though this book was generally the darkest in the series thus far, it was masterfully crafted despite the melancholia and hopelessness seeping through these pages. Wow, live every heartwarming moment in the book that I think about, has something nefarious looming in the background...Storms! I love this book so much!
I don’t want to get into the details of all the character arcs in this book because I don’t want to start crying all over again, but man, this was quite the ride. I can’t wait to see what Sanderson will do with Book 5 because I literally don’t have any complaints about this book. Journey before destination, always.

First of all this comment was STORMING FANTASTIC!!
I really didn't discuss the Listeners very much in my vlog except to mention Venli and Raboniel. But the way you listed the progression and how you spoke about the TITLE of the book with its layers? I realised the tragedy of their trajectory and it is just absolutely heartbreaking. I didn't cry when I read about Eshonai's send-off, but it did make me feel at peace. Her death was so cold and abandoned, I'm so happy that Sanderson sent her off properly. She was a casualty because of her natural openness and curiosity which is why her death was so sad to me.
I cannot wait to reread this book and be hit tenfold with the themes again, now that I'm aware of the plot. Ooh she's gonna be painful (but in the best way).

@@becklebooks I've been thinking and I've found another one, concerning Gavilar this time.
TWOK- we actually think that Gavilar was the victim in this situation and the Parshendi the cruel perpetrators.
WOR- Gavilar's mask slowly starts to peel off as we learn that he was working with someone like Amaram and even tried to force his own daughter upon him. And how do we know Amaram? As a hypocrite, the perfect face of Alethi propriety when deep down he is a snake inside. Just like it starts to show as we follow Gavilar along.
Oathbringer- we start really SEEING who he is. At this point, the mask is 50% off, when we see him use Dalinar in his war efforts while he just lounges around. And we actually see him reprimand Dalinar for not murdering A CHILD simply because of his own selfish pursuits and his obsession with greatness starts to actually show in this book. While in TWOK, his yearning for greatness seemed like a good thing to push Dalinar's plot forward, but in this book we see it wasn't just simple yearning, it was OBSESSION, where all he wanted to do was obtain greatness. From Eshonai's prologue, we see Gavilar messing with things he shouldn't be messing with. All in the name of greatness. It is also heavily implied in this book that all in the name of his greatness, he didn't deal with Jasnah's lunacy well at ALL.
Rhythm Of War- the mask comes 75% off, where we now see him as he was on that day,as he TRULY was. We see him emotionally and mentally abuse his own wife, insult his own family and puts himself above them all in the name of his greatness and is above all , just like Amaram had been, putting on that fake mask of the "wise old king" something Navani sees through. Then we also see the suffering of the Listeners under them and finally understand why they had to do what they had to do.
Book 5- Gavilar's prologue, where the mask is completely off and we get to finally see who he REALLY IS. His first point of view yet we already know so much about him from the way he interacted with others. And when we get to see who he really was...
You realize that the 'victim' (Gavilar) at the beginning was actually the perpetrator and the 'perpetrator'(the Listeners) were actually his victims.
Sanderson is a bloody genius. He made this reversals seem so seem less and effortless. Like, no strain at all! Only a very talented author can do that.

This is what I want everyone to realize. Same I did not care about the listeners but this book just worked in a way I was not expecting. For me personally I thought this book had a ton of emotional scenes, especially little scenes like Raboniel with her daughter and the entire Rhythm of war scene and the ending with Eshonai and Teft. Also with Taravangian cause he is such an interesting character. I'd say that I am glad Brandon made this a Parshendi flashback because and some might not agree, I actually really cared for them by the end which i say is a win for me.
Characters: Navani and Kal are amazing in this book so I agree with everything! So about Venli....I actually really liked her, yes she started all of this but if you see her story is quite similar to Teft when he was a child. The flashbacks for me felt important and deserved and I needed a book with the parshendi cause we've been hard on them since book 1 and i felt connected to them and their dilemmas and fascination with the humans. One flashback with eshonai and dalinar was so important to me and the one with Venli and Axindweth who I guess is a terriswoman. Like there is still so much mystery. The flashbacks with Jaxilm and their culture really fascinated me, I thought it was really beautiful .The fact that eshonai wanted to explore and her genuine curiosity about Roshar is so sad cause we know she dies and we know she has to give up her dreams due to gavilar and the revival of their old gods. I loved when she said I am sorry we had to do this, it kinda hurt because they lived such simple lives and now they are stuck. The ending with her and the stormfather got to me in am I was not expecting and I was a sobbing mess. So overall I loved that we got more of the parshendi, loved we got a closure and am hoping Venli to have a better character development. Also Rlain and Dabbid were amazing in the book, including Teft and his scenes with Kaladin. I'll miss him very very much (i'll miss him calling Kal "lad"). I agree with Shallan and the entire persona thing but i can't help but feel there is a lot more mystery to it than we expect, like do you guys think Chana is her mother? Also Thaidakar!!? damn now i need him to be in roshar.

Edit: I'm going to coalesce all my comments into one, otherwise it'll get out of hand
It's not entirely fair to say that "little did she know, Gavilar sucks." We still have incredibly little of his perspective and history. We don't know how he has changed or what he was like before. Moreover, he seems to believe that Navani chose him, not out of love, but petty ambition, which would obviously make him resentful.
Sanderson seems to think carefully about his stories (well, unless it's about finding a shapeshifting spy), so there must be a reason that Gavilar is so hostile towards Navani and denigrating of his family, whilst simultaneously leaving a message to Dalinar to read The Way of Kings (after being obsessed with it himself).
Personally, I always had a sense of foreboding when reading the Shallan stuff, because the way she was dealing with everything was laughably patchwork. I could only see it going wrong, and it did.
As an aside, it always struck me as odd that Sanderson would go out of his way to make "Moash" a Singer name, yet rename him "Vyre" anyway.
Prediction! Taravangian is going to choose Moash as his champion. Kaladin is going to bring him back to the light, and then Moash is going to die afterwards as a martyr.
Jasnah is like in her mid-thirties, right? Wit might be old, but come on, he can sex someone in her mid-thirties.
Regarding Shallan's love for Adolin, remember back to the romantic conflict. What ultimately swayed Shallan, in my reading, was the difference between Adolin and Kaladin's responses to finding out about her scars. Adolin was supportive of the real her, whereas Kaladin thought she was lucky from how she could just pretend to be someone else. On some level, Shallan has always known that her coping mechanism was flawed. Adolin was an earnest rock she could support herself with. Kaladin couldn't be that. He might match her on quips, but that's not what she needed.
I'm saddened you started skipping so much. I know you've said in a different comment you didn't want the video to be too long, but honestly, I don't think anyone would mind. This video is very easily paused and returned to later.

    • @becklebooks

Gavilar does suck! As a person. He's an abuser and a tyrant. BUT, he is an incredible character. I love that Gavilar and Dalinar balance each other out. One became a tyrant and pursued power (Gavilar) and the other realised how terrifying he was becoming and made drastic changes to stop being that person (Dalinar). So dang cool.
I'm definitely interested in what Sanderson chooses to develop about these characters in the future, there's just SO MUCH we don't know yet.
I think you're right, Moash is likely to be the Champion. If he gets any kind of redemption I am going to be MAD hahahaha! But I'd say your martyr idea is probably on the right track.
Kaladin needs just as much work as Shallan in my opinion (I think he got a lot of it during RoW). So it made sense that he couldn't support her back then re her scars. I'm sure he could now, he's changing which I adore. I just see them as a trio. I can't help it. :P
Ah well, thank you for that kind comment! I essentially filmed most of it, I didn't want to stop too often and break the rhythm of reading! Thank you for your rad comment.

I also did not understand Jasnah's relationship with Wit, first I thought maybe I just don't understand her sexuality, but then she could also be another unreliable narrator like Shallan and she is lying to herself and us. That's why Wit is with her, because he "needs to be there". I am so interested in Jasnah's backstory, it is clear at this point Brandon is keeping something big for later.

So wait, this has been going on for a long time and you haven't talked to Kaladin about it before?
