    Love finding other Dresden fans! I'm such a big fan, I wrote a Dresden book, Warlock of Omaha.

    I just want to acknowledge Dave's poker face at a few moments. Well done, Dave.

    Ahhh, I love hearing you guys talking about Dresden spoilers!!! So nice to get some in depth view points. I finished Battleground recently, so I cannot wait till you guys catch up. So much fun stuff ahead of you, I'm almost jealous you're getting to experience it all for the first time. I will say that this is a series that really benefits from rereading. I love how goofy and sarcastic Harry is, it's the humour that really brings me back to these books over and over - one of my fave moments was the 'meep meep' roadrunner bit during the fae battle at the end of Summer Knight, I choked laughing 😂

      Oooh, I love that you've said that because I'm barely half way through the series and I'm already excited to reread it!! Hahaha I also laugh aloud a LOT with his books. XD

    Thomas is also a fan of smarmy irony, though more subtle. The scene that stands out is wearing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer shirt to one of the Duel meetings

      I do love when I get references to the stuff I really love. Even when I feel like he is a bit too heavy-handed (StarWars and StarTrack mostly) it always feels true to character, but its probably just that I don't love them (like I love Buffy) because then it never feels jarring.

    • @becklebooks
      @becklebooks  Před 3 lety

      I reckon the Buffy reference was also an additional nod to Marsters. :P

  • @mkohlhorst

    The Denarians show every five books. Also the world building gets bigger and Bigger and BIGGER throughout the series... as do the gut punches. These books will most likely make you cry... while being unable to put them down.

    • @mkohlhorst
      @mkohlhorst Před 2 lety +2

      Also, keep in mind the series is a first person narrative and Dresden doesn't know everything. So the unreliable narrator does apply to the series. When Dresden says this person's or that person's motivation is X it can also be Y or Z.

    I have no intention of continuing this series but you and Dave mentioned Thomas and I was like, 'Who's that?', and then Dave said, 'Harry's half-brother' and I was like, *GASP!*
    Dave: The bit with the ghouls *BIG WINK*
    Me: LMAO
    This video was fun and it didn't feel anywhere close to 40mins long. I enjoyed hearing about the themes and plot development throughout the series. It kind of makes me wish I'd been able to get into the series, but at the same time makes me more sure that it's not really for me anyway. Still, I'd love to watch your next discussion video about the rest of the series once you've read it.

      Haha Thomas is a cheeky vampire who comes in at book three, so you probably wouldn't have seen him, no. :P Ah I'm so happy we were entertaining even though you had NO context as to what we were talking about. Hahahaha! We had so much fun and we can't wait to do more vids like this!

  • @Dyuqe
    @Dyuqe Před 3 lety +1

    Awesome! I want to clarify the "act 1" thing, becouse I was the one who told you that. Up to this point, Dresden Files is really formulaic, but soon there's a point where the series takes a massive turn and everything changes. After that it's hard to look at previous books in the same light. It's a clear line in the series, you will know when you get to it.
    I believe Butcher knew about Thomas from the beginning. He planned all major plot points of the series 20 years ago. He still switches some stuff around, gets new ideas, but major stuff was probably set in stone a long time ago.
    The Coke thing - it's just sort of a meme, just like Burger King. Also, you probably noticed that, on book covers, Harry is wearing a hat. It's a running joke between Butcher and cover artist. Harry often says that he hates hats.
    Eagerly waiting for a catch up spoiler discussion :)
    Edit: Also, that cheeky look into the camera regarding White Night ;)

    • @becklebooks
      @becklebooks  Před 3 lety +1

      Oh, sick! It's starting to track that way -- towards expansive, rather than formulaic! I've noticed the hat thing and it amuses me EVERY time. You'd think it'd be old by now but... clearly I am predictable. :P
      I can't wait to watch interviews and content of Butcher and Marsters, too, so I can see them discuss the series! It's so bloody cool that he's planned so much out (but still with wiggle room).

    1st I really loved this convo, it would have been nice if you where at the same book, a nice book club kinda thing :) I hope we get more and if I give critique (comment will be flow of consciousness) know that you do not need to change anything id love to have more of the same.
    I do feel like he does set the parameters of the magic early in the books, but I may be misremembering. I do also love that magic has several different things that goes into power levels, and the implication that Harry does not have the finesse/balance/control BECAUSE he can mostly add more fuel. Like he has "gotten away" with not having to learn as much about conserving energy/balance/finesse because he has so much (will?)power. It does also mean other magic users, that does have that control, have the upper hand, but Harry can still often hurt them with a hard punch when he manoeuvres the fight in the right way. Its always satisfying when he wins that way!
    I agree 100% with butcher repeating himself a lot when it comes to intros, it gets especially annoying in rereads lol.
    However the repeating of coke is actually showing harrys character (imo), Harry wants as little change as possible and changes are hard for him. Tho he does change from coke to beer, tho he will repeat the same thing any time he mentions beer later xD
    Marcone calling Harry mister Dresden feels like a character choice, he is professional and it conveys this clearly I feel.
    I agree that the bad guys are developed really good, I feel like everyone has agency and their own motivation.
    The part with the Ghouls is so good :3
    One of my favourite early fights is in book one when he blasts the club open and uses his shield. Feels defining for how badass he can be or its just that I always love his shield, just so cool :D
    No wait, my favourite has to be when he throws himself out of the car and uses the potion (in full moon) it shows how amazing magic can be, but there there are always drawbacks, in this case, he is overconfident af. He is awesome until he falls over
    Are you guys reading the comics and or short stories? I may have asked before but I cant remember, sorry. Id love to hear more about what you think about every character, perhaps a full spoiler character "tier list", (at some midpoint, 10 or 11?) I would love some spoiler talk after every book obviously (preferably you both on the same book), but if you are not planning to please do some more of these!
    I feel like this needs to be edited or whatever but I wont :P Again, thanks for the video I really liked it and I hope for more, you guys are nice together!

      We'd be at the same book... if Dave didn't keep reading ahead. Hahaha! Neither of us can stop, so this was as close as we could get. We can't wait to make more Dresden content, though! Your comment & suggestions are awesome. :)
      OHHH he has SO MANY cool moments! I totally forgot about the moment with the potion in Fool Moon. Dang, that was so cinematic. Pretty much all the fight scenes are so easy to visualise; it's awesome.
      All good! We haven't been reading comics or short stories, but someone mentioned the reading order in a comment on my Storm Front review. I'm not messing about with them now but I'll be rereading for sure, so I'll slot them in then. (Hopefully with more spoiler content in the future as well but we'll see.)
      I'm glad you didn't edit because I love long comments! Thank you!! :D

    Stan Lee once said that it was important to reintroduce or recap in each comic, because every comic is someone's first.
    Also... I didn't start at Storm Front. My first book was randomly bought from someone to read, and it was Small Favor

      @@nealhoffman7518 I stopped ep 1, my impression was that Harry was a playboy and could not take their Bob. I feel like the books would have to be animated to give the magic and ideas justice... or have a huge budget :P

    • @nealhoffman7518
      @nealhoffman7518 Před 3 lety

      Codex Alera would be perfect animated. Dresden Files live action, 1 hour episodes 9 episode seasons covering 2-3 books and inserted short stories for tonal and perspective changes. Not that I'd get a say lol

    • @becklebooks
      @becklebooks  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm surprised you started with Small Favour!! I can't imagine how it would make sense but surely the reiterated information in every book would have come in handy. :P I'll take that recap in a separate section at the start of the book instead, pls. (Although it doesn't personally annoy me too much.)

  • @nealhoffman7518
    @nealhoffman7518 Před 3 lety

    Jim wrote Storm Front to prove his teacher wrong, and is a great story. Codex Alera was written to prove a bet that came out of a chatroom debate that it was the writing that made a good story and not the concept.

    • @TheVaultDescendant
      @TheVaultDescendant Před 3 lety

      I still have not read codex, tho I feel like I should. Was Butcher on the concept side I guess? If so/not what is the concept, or what makes it or the writing good (or not good lol)
      *EDIT*
      Just read up on it, I love that it was shitty concept and he says romans and pokemon. Two things I really like xD I guess I have to read them now

    • @nealhoffman7518
      @nealhoffman7518 Před 3 lety +2

      Butcher was on the side that the writing and story were the important aspect. So he told the guy to give him two tired concepts to use... which was "lost roman legions and pokemon"

    • @becklebooks
      @becklebooks  Před 3 lety +1

      Agreed, I'm definitely keen to read Codex Alera as well! I'd heard of the forum thing, where Butcher took the challenge and ran with it (successfully)! Roman Legions and Pokemon? It's like this book was written especially for me.
