Welcome to the October 2021 Ask Me Anything episode of Mindscape! These monthly excursions are funded by Patreon supporters (who are also the ones asking the questions). I take the large number of questions asked by Patreons, whittle them down to a more manageable size - based primarily on whether I have anything interesting to say about them, not whether the questions themselves are good - and sometimes group them together if they are about a similar topic. Enjoy!

I watched Sean give a cosmology lecture, (on CZcams) at The Perimeter Institute and during the Q&A afterwards a few, but 1 physicist in particular, was extremely rude to him. He stated that they were “above him.”
I get that Sean dabbled in a lot of different fields but for anyone to claim that they were superior to him was shocking, to say the least.
You could tell it rattled him, but his response was very diplomatic and reserved. He his such an amazing educator for us lay-people and armchair pseudo-intellectuals that he deserves respect. It’s not easy taking the most complicated aspects of reality and explaining them in ways anyone can understand. I’m sure it’s a lot of work that he doesn’t even have to do, but he does and that is very noble.

Sean is a very bright man, I used to follow him.. but I think he took an unsupportable position with his infinite splitting universes solution to the measurement problem... then I started to listen to him more critically and was put off by his ignorant comments about the president... based on what we now know was a great hoax. Nothing really significant has been discovered in quantum theory in over 40 years outside confirming a known field (Higgs) and the significance of dark energy.. the Large Hadron collider has discovered unlimited public and private funds for all things that sound cool and are ridiculously expensive.... but aside from the Higgs energy value..... it has been a complete bust. Sean Carroll at least has become a bit of a contrarian I suppose.. which is a good thing.

Writing can help you draw attention to your favourite observations. You don't have to do it a lot. Just enough to jog your memory later. It's best when you've just learned that a previous understanding (that you've not written or read before) was inadequate

51:04 Sean's writing process (or lack of it).
A couple of years ago, I read every book I could on writing processes. Now I only take some inspiration from them (it is, indeed, a sort of "self-help" book genre), and mostly follow my own style - I just can't "freewrite" or, like Sean, begin chapter seven before having written chater six...

I have so many questions, and look forward to the AMA vids so much hoping to hear my exact topic covered.
    Questions:
-The original star materials that collapsed never went through the black hole event horizon is that matter information lost forever since it can't have been encoded?
-Sean what do you think the odds are that the Origin of our universe started from a singularity, and the odds that the center of a black hole is actually a singularity?
-Was there anything outside the spec of our universe before inflation?
-How could our universes size be infinite if it started as a defined spec sized thing, and simply inflated at different known speeds only 14billion years ago.
-How does information survive a black hole? I can see if there's a holographic imprint of all that ever fell in, but it is quantum wiped into hawking radiation that contains no information of the original thing that fell in?
-How are you enjoying your move and University affiliation switch?
    Thanks!

  • @davidmay268
    @davidmay268 Před 2 lety

Instantaneous consciousness is an illusion. When you get to very small time differences, it becomes increasingly difficult to say which event happened before the other. Different senses even have different degrees of time resolution. For instance hearing is far higher resolution than sight.
Ultimately our conscious experience is put together in the past, we live in the immediate past rather than the present.
We achieve what seems like a present by predicting what is most likely to happen in the immediate future.
This is the reason why it is difficult to predict the motion of a spinning object such as a tennis ball. We have learned to predict where an object should travel to based on a classical intuition of the physics of everyday life, when this is violated, our "present" can be revealed to be the simulation it actually
    is.
This buffer is what allows the brain to stitch our reality together.
To the extent of my understanding anyway :)

It's not really a thing - trust me. It's about as philosophical as the magic trick of sawing a lady in half. WHY it's always a lady is a far more interesting topic.

I heard a contradiction. What people mean by what you deny as "essence" in the teleportation device, is exactly the same thing as what people mean when they talk about branching in many worlds. The difference between me in one world and another version of me in another world is precisely the essence I am worried about in a teleportation device. In fact if you proved many worlds I would take that as proof that teleporters just make a copy and kill me.

Good episode as always but I disagree about Sean's take on teaching creationism in schools issue. Scientists were not saying "don't teach creationism in schools", they were saying "don't teach creationism in science class". Big difference. Are churches, temples and mosques willing to teach evolution in Sunday schools and let the members make up their own mind? don't think so.

25:04 About the question "Why is there something rather than nothing?". Why do people with religious beliefs have trouble accepting that the universe could exist without a cause yet happily embrace the idea that God exists without a cause. Answer: because they believe that God is an incomprehensible mystery, implying that the question is not answerable, which, funnily enough, is exactly what Sean said.

It seems from a lecture I watched of yours you state clearly that the billions of galaxies in the universe along with several other things are completely unnecessary for the existence of human beings.
