  • So the HSR 2.1 story quest / trailblaze mission was genuinely incredible! I adore Penacony, and exploring Aventurine’s character just made me adore the Penacony story that much more. So much so, that I decided to make this Aventurine video essay on the topic of the tragic irony of his luck. I’m so excited for the HSR 2.2 update, and I hope we’ll see more Aventurine in the future.
    Anyways, I hope you enjoy this Aventurine video for the Penacony Trailblaze Mission from Honkai Star Rail’s 2.1 update!

      thats the devils luck, the name of the trailblaze quest is very fitting, the devil in velvet is a detective novel about a man doing a deed with the devil and being thorn beetwen the love of two women and learning to accept that you can only one had one thing but lose the other, aventurine embodies well that story with his devils luck, he has the best luck ever but the rest will had only the worst luck, he can only had one thing and the other never

    It's interesting to juxtapose Aventurine's luck with the Nihility, because nihilism also speaks against the idea that "things happen for a reason." One can try to find meaning and reason behind surviving a tragedy, but what reason and meaning can possibly justify the tragedy in the first place. One is left asking, "Why me?" And a nihilist would answer, "No reason. Just luck."

    Put in an analogy, lets say aven was a genshin player. he'd be the type that gets 6 limited 5 stars back to back in a single ten pull, but he is actually going for a standard banner 5 star character. His massive luck prevents him from being unable to get a specific standard banner character that he wants, causing him to wait for 3+ yrs... perhaps forever. And he started genshin only bc he wanted that standard character. He is chasing after something so easy yet so hard to obtain, all because of his massive luck that others desire.
    (btw this analogy is VERY surface level, I just wanted a "lighthearted" analogy for him)

    Yee, I think also a nice through line for Aventurine in 2.1 is the idea of rebirth. He is born on the Kakava, the day Gaiathra Triclops reincarnates. His Cornerstone prayer mentions rebirth. The most pivotal points in his life feature rain, in conjunction with Acheron's comments on what rain means, to erase, hide, or wash away, it almost works as a baptism, to wash and be born again. How Aventurine in 2.1 ends parallels his mother when he is born: His mother prays, questioning why her son has been born into world that he cannot live in, only to find her answer with coming rain. Aventurine is also questioning why he was born, why he gets to live, while death takes everyone else from him. Again, Acheron brings the rain and helps him find the purpose he needs.
    I think part of the reason Aventurine followed the Path of Preservation is because it is a path that is very good at giving meaning to pain and sacrifice. All that he went through, everything his loved ones and people did to keep him alive, they mean something, they are important in the view of the Preservation, which I think is something he really needed.

    Great video, its nice to see someone approach the character with some maturity rather than just repeating the same 3 "zest" or "rizz" memes. Hoyo clearly put alot of effort into developing him and really focused on telling a story that feels incredibly mature, and in a way, very real, and I have alot of respect for them for that. The fact that they managed to accomplish so much in a single patch is really impressive.
    Personally, I hope Aventurine actually gets to fade out of the story for now, having served his "purpose" for the Penacony arc to an extent, and that in the meantime he can go and find his own purpose in life in the background, somewhere in the universe. I hope one day, perhaps a year from now or even two or more, we will randomly stumble across Aventurine during our travels. He could have a different outfit, something much more normal and pedestrian, have made friends of his own or even started a family, managed to fit in with a community and would have found something to live for now that he is truly free for the first time in his life.
    That'd be my ideal ending for him atleast. I'm not sure if his "luck" thing is still present or if it perhaps changed after his "death", but man, the boy really, really deserves a happy ending of some kind.

    I've been seeing a lot of mixed things on the meaning of him 'having a nice body' in the chinese translation. I don't know a lick of chinese myself, but a common consensus seems to be that they mean people are willing to bet on him in the arena because he's attractive, despite being scrawny. It definitely feels like the darker implications are there though.
    I've always loved the cocky gambler archetype, so Aventurine was a hit for me from the beginning, but they really fleshed him out in a way that I loved so much more than I expected. I especially like his relationship with Ratio, the 'doctor's advice' note definitely had me tearing up a bit, before I devolved into full on sobbing as he said goodbye to his past self.

      Yeah, it's hard to fully understand the nuance of how something is said in a certain language when you don't speak that language, so I can't really say for sure, but even in English it feels pretty creepy and violating and dehumanizing. I'm also not sure how heavily HSR can imply something like that, so ultimately that line is up for interpretation, but just given the context of him being an "attractive" slave, coupled with the way the slave master tells him, "You look good," I'd be inclined to believe he endured some pretty unsavory stuff... or perhaps he killed them all before anything like that could happen. We do know he killed the slave master, so I guess I'd like to hope that kill prevented anything from happening.
      Also, same lol Aventurine is my bread and butter for character archetypes, and yes! They did a wonderful job writing his story. I also enjoy his banter with Ratio hehe I hope we see more of them both in the future.

    My favorite definition of luck is "Where persistence meets opportunity" which I think is pretty accurate for Aventurine and why he ended following Preservation instead of Nihility or Elation which were both opportunities that seemed to lay before him at certain points in his life. Despite him facing quite a large number of hardships he always chose to endure, which can be quite the hard choice when facing seemingly insurmountable odds.
    To be clear I don't really "like" many of the Penacony characters, but I do find them intriguing which in general is a sign of good character writing. Quite looking forward to how this narrative resolves.

    Star Rail really built Aventurine as a villain in 2.0 only to make him the most conflicted and sympathetic character in 2.1. I think Aventurine definitely suffers from survivor's guilt, that's why he's always so willing to bet his own life. Also believe that, from his perspective, he definitely feels unlucky but can't ever say that, because otherwise all the suffering his people went through would hold no meaning at all.

  • @seraphywang4638
    @seraphywang4638 Před 2 měsíci +3

    There is also an irony to his luck in that it only benefits him if he thinks for himself. Selfish luck basically. But despite losing so much in his life, he keeps thinking selflessly, that things will work out for other people and the issue is, the luck doesnt work because he doesnt believe it’ll benefit himself which is where the luck stems from.
    I guess a better example would be you can only get a 100% on a test if you wholeheartedly believe you’ll fail it. He doesnt believe any of his plans will work out for himself but they always work out. He always wants his close ones safe and that doesnt work out because he believes it wont. Imagine having to lose hope on something for the best outcome. How does a selfless person do that?

    This was a great analysis of our zesty gambler (Qingque is still the OG).
    Aventurine was the real star of 2.1, both his character arc and NA voice (Camden) delivered so much (i still can't believe Aventurine was Camden's first major role.)
    On 2.0, Aventurine was just placing his chips for the bet, so it was hard to connect with him (everybody being sus in penacony didn't help either). I didn't hate him, sure he was a prick and played the antagonist role, but Shaoji never leaves it plain and simple. Most, if not all of the characters written by him on HI3rd had complex depht, the flamechasers argueably are the best ones to date. Having said that, 2.1 delivered on all fronts, i can't wait for 2.2.

    I think that Aventurine is both a good sign going forward and generally someone to be appreciated.
    On one hand his writing is really well handled, mature and layered, so much so to the point that as some pointed out, white night is about Aventurine, this is a huge step up above generally most of mihoyos writing in my opinion, I'd go as far as to say, so far, he's the best written hsr character and a lot better than anyone in genshin, honestly I'd even go as far as to compare him to Otto (though I still think Otto is a bit better, though I'm biased because Regression).
    Aside from that, I feel like a person really should take a moment to appreciate him, for all the gambler jokes etc, his behaviours, motivations, personality, so much of it makes perfect sense. Even as his future put it, for all the flamboyance, the straight aces, royal flush (idk the terms), he's clutching his chips below the table, for all his luck and playing it off, he is afraid constantly, even what he said during his cut scene "You always have to hide your ace with a straight face" fits him so well, he always hides his fears, his pain with the cocky full of himself gambler who knows he'll win, whenever he does win he questions himself more, is this really his blessing? The luck to be the last survivor of his race, to survive when his family didn't, to kill all those other people after being bought, does he want it? Does he deserve it? Hell is it even a blessing at all? I hate how much people are oversimplifying him when he's so well written

    Another thing that makes me so sad about Aventurine is the fact that he really wants to befriend people, but absolutely no one trusts him. Everyone is just out here throwing slurs and insults at him, and he just keeps smiling. Like when Ratio insulted his schooling and his parents, only to be shocked to find out AVENTURINE HAD NEITHER!! And Aventurine just smiled and said he didn't take offense, but I imagine it did break his heart a lil to have that thrown back in his face. When he talks about playing the "role" of friend, it def comes off as the idea of friends being a hollow term to him. Reciprocal, transactional, and ultimately temporary. What I'm trying to say is: I CAN FIX HIM GUYS!!!

    An important point to note is that in Friedrich Nietzsche's God is Dead, even though nihilism implies that life inherently has no meaning, Nietzsche ultimately concludes that nihilsm justifies one to pursue one's own sense of purpose. It's interesting that Adventurine came to the same standpoint by the end.

    • @himetsukich
      @himetsukich  Před 3 měsíci +2

      The thing is, Nietzsche is arguing _against_ nihilism. He wanted people to combat nihilism by way of creating meaning. He feared that the consequence of God being "dead" would lead to nihilism because he thought people would lose the basis of their moral beliefs and values. So he’s not arguing for nihilism; he’s arguing against it. He fears that nihilism is the outcome of God being “dead.” Nihilism justifies one to create meaning in that the consequence of nihilism is a good reason to create meaning for the sake of, well, combating nihilism… but that’s why I, respectfully, stand by what I said in this video and why I find it ironic that Aventurine finds purpose while standing in the embodiment of nihility. He is combating nihilism by choosing to find meaning, and an Emanator of Nihility is the driving force behind that.
      Also, just for clarity's sake, there is no work entitled "God is Dead" by Nietzsche. This was a statement he made in another piece of his, "The Gay Science" (although it's likely more well known and popularized as a result of "Thus Spoke Zarathustra," another work of Nietzsche's).

    I’m seeing more and more channels covering lore and story explanations/analysis/theories ever since penacony and 2.0 and I am loving it. Discovering new content creators like you has been a fantastic breath of fresh air compared to the stream of drama/leak videos that are around.
    Thank you for your content blessing my feed. Commenting to pay it forward. ❤

    Great video on a great character! Honestly Aventurine has been so interesting to talk about, me and my friends that play HSR have the theory that he will follow the same path as Acheron he will seek out IX and face THEM down and come out an Emanator of The Nihility in a desperate bid to find an answer to the question and purpose Acheron left him

    After finishing 2.1 story i had some alcohol just to drown my own sorrow 😭 as when they showed adventurine's boss fight in the livestream i thought we were going to fight him to win a bet for his cooperation or get key information from him, i didnt think they were going to throw his whole sad backstory and then basically fight to the death!
    After the story he reminded me of a very famous lucky character from the danga rompa series komadea (i probaby spelt it wrong) as they way of thinking are complelty oppersites but thier luck is not. they also both used death the same way but different purposes

      Glad I'm not alone in here. Also If there's some kind of komaeda character in HSR it'd be dope!
      I mean ratio did the komaeda thing in his own story quest where he allowed phase flame to create problem in space station to boost logic and thinking in researchers. But that's merely a fraction of what Nagito would do.

    • @lillight3301
      @lillight3301 Před 3 měsíci

      @@jerryeljeremy7790 I agree with the dr.ratio with the flame problem however to me dr.ratio acts more like byakuya togami (the blond glasses rich kid) especially what togami did during the whole game 1 case 2 scenario, though dr.ratio did rescue them. Meanwhile nagito is just delusional but he is very calculated.

    Lore video? So cool!! Do more!!! Yes i used to dislike him in 2.0 because of his pompous and rude attitude to us and the Astral Express crew, the way he talks about “friends” like they’re his pawns…and I was one of those who laughed at him whenever he got roasted…
    After 2.1, I kinda get why he became the way he is…even his bravado, callous risk taking and the way he speaks like his “master” with that all or nothing bs…was all the experience and learning he had picked up growing up and surviving…
    However, beneath the facade of a cocky gambler, deep down he was still the little Kakavasha who won his sister’s necklace and wanted a happy family…

    Small correction: Nihilist believe that there is no inherent meaning. Nihilist can and often do find meaning in things and a purpose at life but its one they chose for themselves. It is meaningful to each individual nihilist. Thats what i believe as a nihilist anyway.

    • @himetsukich
      @himetsukich  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Isn't this a description of Existentialism, though? Generally speaking, Nihilism posits that life has no meaning -- there is no truth, there is no purpose. Existentialism also posits that life is meaningless, but expresses the idea that individuals can (and should) find their own meaning in life.
      This is what I have learned, at least. Of course, each school of thought has a lot of other elements to it, as well as several subdivisions, but generally speaking, this is what I have read about and learned, but maybe this is incorrect? 🤔

    This charcter is every single thing amplified in such way I can only consider abhorrent.
    They are a shell they exploited and were exploited by capitalism to such an end that every thing about them is nothing but a ploy.
    An endless gamble for the stake of slightly better outcome at the risk of themselves. I knew this game would get darker even in the early story darker aspects are shown time and time again.
    And it seems they to lost that gamble as so many tend to. Their entire backstory reads as nothing but an endless role of the dice won at horrific situations survived but little else.
    Their is no such thing as luck in any capitalistic world but it definitely fails to excuse them for it either particularly noticeable as it's doubtful no one else survived from their.

    Honestly, his life story is just a tool to sell him to the players. He maybe lucky but he is doomed from the very time he was born, and his bravado is just a façade of his fear and low self esteem. And who will want a previous slave in their party?
    Not rolling for him, I'll roll for the space cowboy instead.
