    I bought a 85’ 40Hp Johnson from a guy I know and his uncle is a supposedly marine mechanic. The first time I ran it at the lake it spun the stator because he didn’t tighten the bolts holding it down, it had 2 different kinds of spark plugs in it too. I have a friend I’ve known for 30 years that has a shop on lake Burton in northeast Ga. Gil’s Marine. Luckily he had the stator off of a old Johnson motor he had for parts. As you know you can’t buy a new stator for these older Johnson motors. My mechanic had to do some other adjustments as well. Now it runs pretty good for a 36 year old outboard. I’ve learned a lot from watching you work on these motors.

      Hey Harlan. Thanks ! Appreciate you tuning in. Sometimes its hard to find parts, but there out there. Here's what I do. Go to marineengine.com, look up your year/model, get the part number from the schematic, most likely they'll have it in stock at marineengine.com but not always and it never hurts to look for the best deal. That's where ebay comes in. Search the part number on ebay twice, once with the "0" in front of the number and once without the "0". Some ebay sellers dont use the "0" when they list their parts and some do. Some do both. Then I look for the best deal and closest shipping. That's the other good thing about ebay is the fast shipping. I buy all my parts there. If you can't find it new there's almost always lots of good used ones. Also, if it seems impossible to find what your looking for, keep in mind, that stator for instance was probably used in a dozen different outboards ranging in horse power and year. There may be someone on ebay selling a complete ignition plate with that stator mounted on the plate but only listing it as a 1980's something 25 hp Johnson complete ignition plate assembly, and not listing all the part numbers. It's rare but it happens! You'd be surprised at some of the parts I've dug up on ebay! Glad you got it up and running. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Gil sold me the stator for $150 and another $150 labor. He had a hard time getting the flywheel off of it. I found some stators on eBay but the wanted $200+ for them. I’m enjoying watching you fix these older motors.

    The timing method is working just fine it looks like to me. Wish I was there with my welder. I've pulled broken bolts out of countless blocks, radiators, and many other things by welding a nut onto the broke off bolt. To be honest the more flush broke off it was the easier they came out. The heat would penetrate further and break the corrosion bond. Good Luck!!!

    See if you can borrow a mig welder and hold a nut in front of the broken bolt , fill inside of nut with weld and wrench out the broken stud welded to the nut. The heat generated by welding will loosen the seized stud. Works every time for me. Great Video!

Put it on a trailer with one of the 2 plug wires removed Start it put it in forward slow don't advance the throttle (carbs) just the ignition base until it hits full stop and observe your timing. Adjust as necessary because while cranking the electronics may advance it you have to check it warm under load IMHO

    Broken bolt on stuff is fun. Allot of patients and the right tools. Allot of folks think torch them until they are glowing but you can't on aluminum or you'll warp the head. Drilling the stud out and tapping is about your only way to get these out when flush or below surface. Center punch and drill straight till all that's left is the threads then use a tap to remove the old threads. Some folks use a drill guide. Not the way you want to spend your day but so rewarding when its fixed👍

    I have a 1994 johnson 50hp j50tlere. I am putting a tiller handle on it. On the tiller handle there is a round rubber plug with one (black wire) female in it and a second black wire with a round terminal. I think they are for the kill switch? On the motor there is a half circle ruber plug with a black wire and what looks to be a lite brown wire. Do you know were thay go or could you look at your?

    Love your channel. Maybe you can help me. I bought a used boat that came with a 1990 Johnson 40 hp VRO. It was rebuilt. Had the local marina tune it up this summer and they said it was in good shape. New plugs. I am up here in Michigan. Went out the other day and no problems. Yesterday couldn’t get it started. Seems like it might have been flooded. I took the plugs out and they looked clean. Today it started, but I had to manually fully choke it to get it started. Once started it was okay. Was 31 degrees today. Seems like might be a carburetor issue, but can that be temperature related. Is there any additive to the gas I should be using. Once she is running it appears clean as not a lot of smoke only at startup so oil gas mixture seems good. Any advice would be appreciated.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey. Thanks. I've never tried to start a motor in 31 degree weather I live in florida. Hahaha. You may have flooded it or not. Did the plugs look wet when you checked them? When you couldn't start it, did you use the primer bulb, and before you had to manually choke it the next day? What is Manually Choke? Should pump the primer bulb up until its hard before every first start and fill the carb bowls. Always hit the choke a little to prime it up until it fires. Check those plugs, wet or dry? Wet = Flooded, Dry = no fuel to plugs. Make sure the vent on the tank is open too. It should smoke a little extra at startup from the choke. When its that cold the diaphragm in the fuel pump is probably stiff as a board. May need to replace it. I don't know about any additives for cold weather. Maybe check with Kodibass on that, he lives in Alaska. If it ran good after it was warmed up, I think it was just cold as hell and hard to start, not unusual. It's a little different than summer time startup and you'll know what she likes after a few times. Just finesse her. Curious to know how it goes. Thanks again & Happy New Year!

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Isn’t the start key the primer. That’s what the manual says. After you prime the bulb on the gas tank it says to push the key in to prime when starting. After I took the cover off I pushed the lever connected to the carburetor all the way down and that is how it started. I am not very mechanically inclined but it seemed to work so I was happy I got off the water.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  Před 3 lety +1

      @@jamesclancy8536 Ok, using the wrong lingo here. When I said choke I mean primer. There are no physical choke butterflies. So what you did was open the throttle all the way, which gave it more air so it probably was flooded. Make sure the red handle on the primer solenoid is set straight, if its turned it will flood the motor. Its for emergency starting when its turned open. The fast start lever on the remote will open the throttle up. When you "prime" it by pushing the key in as its cranking, be careful not to hold it to long or it will flood out. Hope you catch some fish!
