    Thanks Clive! I’ve just started with gouache and I’ve got through Zinc White like nobody’s business. This will enable me to continue with a medium that I’m rapidly coming to love.

    Hi Clive! Thank you so much for sharing this important information! I have a very tight budget and can hardly afford any paints. The problem is, that I like acrylics, watercolours and gouache paints. Therefore I already limited myself to eight colours and mix everything else myself. Knowing now, that you can make watercolours, gouache and acrylic paints for a mere fraction of the price the art store sells it at, I am shocked. I already mixed my own gesso for two years now ( thanks to your tutorial!) And it is way better than the stuff I can pick up at my local art store. I will definetely try to make my own paint.

      Mixing your own is easy when you know how most professional artist mix there own as they have more control but I'm not saying it may be easier to buy some colours

    Great video ,i have been painting about 4 years now,and never thought of making my own i use water colour all the time to sketch out doors the easiest paint to travel with, oil is messy to pack up acrylic dries and wrecks brushes the one thing i do not think you can go too cheap on. the opasity of your paint is lovely covered that dark back ground.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 6 lety +2

      Making your own is great as you get high pigmentation and you can control how you like it I make all my own paints these days for my projects pigment is not cheap but worth the investment as you can make so much watercolour is so cheap to make if you have the materials to hand that’s why I sell small bags of pigment I buy in bulk so can pass on the saving

    This is such a great video. I've been wondering how to make gouache. Can we also add chalk to ready made watercolor to turn it into gouache?

  • @KevinsCaninesAndAquatics

    You used a mask and gloves do you need them after you make it? I am just curious because you made sure to say that you need a mask and gloves but after mixing the pigment and making the watercolors and gouache do you still need them?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 5 lety +1

      Once the pigment is dispersed then you should be fine most pigments are safe these day unless you use genuine-pigments

    Nice video. Wondering what surfaces you are working on?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 6 lety

      Mainly canvas for acrylics and paper for watercolour and gouache but these can also be used on canvas as long as it’s on a ridged support

    Sir, I see various types of pigments available on online web commerce sites. Can you please advise on which particular type of pigments we should use? I am from India. But I couldn't find any vendors for small quantity of pigments!

    Ive heard vegetable Glycerin should be added but how much for that amount for paint you did in this video... and why should Glycerin be
    added

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 5 lety +1

      Only a few drops is needed it’s been added to paint for centuries it basically stops the water from evaporating to quick

  • @judibooher7796

    How can you keep it from cracking over time, can it be sealed as you would acrylics?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 6 lety +2

      Watercolour and gouache don’t crack as they are painted on paper it is possible to seal them but that’s not done very often

    • @judibooher7796
      @judibooher7796 Před 6 lety +2

      CLIVE5ART I've seen some Gouache crack, it's why I asked...

    Can you use magnesium carbonate instead of calcium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate is gym chalk and it's really cheap.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 5 lety +2

      I don’t think that’s is any good as it’s a salt not a chalk salt would effect the paint

We are friends on fb and Instagram if u don't recognize me and im not sure if u have even saw my story or art but ive only been painting for a very short time and I ve never tried watercolor... I just bought a watercolor set and cant read the instructions because it is in Austrian or German.. Ive been trying to figure it out all morning.. And finally just felt defeated and put it down and hopped on here only to see you have made a tutorial on the exact thing... Lol😂 Thank you!!! Happy Saturday my friend!!! 💜🎨💜 Ahhh i see.. Lol you are showing how to make it.. Cool.. Do u have any tutorials on watercolors? 😊🎨💜

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  Před 6 lety +1

      Gouache is a more opaque than watercolour but fades quicker in my understanding due to the chalk both can be reactivated with water and both should only be used on paper I don’t use watercolours only in my art journal but I recommend Larry Hamilton youtube channel I have worked with him so can highly recommend him

    *This "cheaper" way of getting paint is starting to be pretty expensive... 😜 Lol... I do appreciate the knowledge though!! Many thanks!*

    • @CLIVE5ART

      I appreciate your working out but I ask this how many pans of colour could you make from the initial set up also if you think about it by adding the chalk and pigment to linseed oil you have oil paint and again adding pigment to acrylic medium you have acrylic paint. The reason I make my own paint is to save money as do a lot of artists it is very cost effective plus we also know exactly what we are getting and making your own also we get high pigment paint or professional quality which is sold in the stores which are far more expensive but I appreciate that not all want to make their own paints so shop bought is best for them. Thank you for your comment it helps explain two sides of a coin
