Yeah, come experience a winter in -35 in anywhere norther than the very south of Finland down to -50C in the deep north. Not cold at all when you just layer dress.
This is bullshit, jackass. And it's a surprise more people don't die of hypothermia for this cavalier attitude to the temperature. Its more down to central heating, cars having copper core heaters and a internal combustion engine for perpetual heat than clothing.

I've been to Finland, spent one Christmas when I was travelling about after a divorce, lol! :D
The Finns are great, really friendly people, so much so... On Christmas Day morning, I left the hotel and went for a walk around Helsinki, and I'm not kidding, there wasn't a soul, it was like I had my own city... The only way I can compare it is Will Smith in 'I Am Legend', eerie but fabulous!!! :D
When lunch time was approaching, the city started stirring, some places were opening up, and, around 12.30pm, I decided to have a beer, bit of light refreshment... So I popped into a place called Molly Malones, ordered a pint of Aurora, and, the barmaid picked up on my accent (Being from the North-East of England), she asked "Are you a Geordie?", and I was like "No, close, Durham just next door to Newcastle", and, well, she'd been to Durham, she used to go out with a lad from Newcastle, so as I sat at the bar talking to her, a few Finnish fella's walked in and sat behind me at a table.
Just gearing up to leave, one of the fella's comes to the bar, and said "Hello my friend, are you from England", and I was "Yep", and he was asking did I live in Helsinki, and I was "No no... Just travelling", he couldnt believe it, lol... He said "You cannot be alone on Christmas Day, come, come join us for a drink", and he turned to the barmaid and went "Madame, give our friend from England another beer", so I sat with them, and they were great company... Though one thing to note, when I went to the toilet I pulled the barmaid and asked if they were okay, cos like... I have no idea, and she was like, they are locals, they are fine.
So, with that, I came back, sat down and continued chatting, I did notice they were drinking brandy, so I asked them if they all wanted another one... And one of them went "Do you like brandy?", and I was like "No, not my thing, I'm a single malt type of fella", and with that, all I heard was "Madame, madame, give our friend from England a single malt", and I was like "Nooo no, I'll get the round in", and they were all adamant I was their guest and it was on them!
And I'm not joking, I spilled out of there into the taxi at 1.15am early Boxing Day morning... Absolute mullered mind, pissed as a newt!!! And do you know what... All I paid for was that one drink when I went in there... Absolutely belting of a day! :)
Only problem with that though is that I ended up booking a trip to Tallinn in Estonia at the reception when I stumbled back in, ferry was 6am! :/
I made it though, rough, but made it... And one thing I can say, is that, as soon as I arrived there and started venturing around the old part of Tallinn, my hangover just drifted away... That place is lush, a hidden gem if you ask me! :)
I did loads more things, but as it goes, that was one of the best afternoons and evenings, I could of sat there talking to the Finns forever (Especially with the free drink going, lol)! as as hosts go, they are the best, and their country is indeed a really beautiful place, especially when you get out of the city and start walking over their icy lakes, and sitting next to one of them with a freshly made coffee and listening to it sing! :)
I wanna go back now I've relived a bit of it! :D hehehe

Years ago I was walking with my mom and her boyfriend in Helsinki near the water, in the evening, middle of summer, and we bumped into this nice White Russian guy. Is that the same as Belarus? I am not good at geography. Anyhoo he was lost and mom's boyfriend wanted him to come back home with us and they chatted all the way there. Lol. This guy. He had a bottle of the finest Russian vodka in the world. He offered me some and I declined as I was drinking Jägermeister, I offered him some and he declined. Lol we just drank our drinks for awhile alone in the room. Coulda been awkward but wasn't. He was really touched by the hospitality though and left us the bottle!!! I made a bunch of White Russians from that. Omg that vodka was so yummy. If only I could remember what it was called. It's my one armed man.
In the end he went to meet up with his buddies who I hope had more of that yum. No vodka has ever compared.

As a Finnish person, it is easy to take all this for granted... The country is very green and has more lakes than you can count... The lake view from the summer cottage is just breathtaking and I could just sit and stare at that view for hours and just get lost in my thoughts... It is very therapeutic. Especially if you have the time to leave your busy schedule behind for a little while. Even the cities here are quite small with not so many people, so there isn't too much of a concrete jungle here either. It is nice that cities and towns have had the wherewithal to reserve space for green things to grow even in the cities.

TBH, not liking winter or snow because it's too cold is usually a case of not having the right clothes. Finland has two sides in the winter. If the temperature is around 0°C, and/or the 'permanent' snow hasn't arrived, it is awful. No snow means dark, grey, wet. 0°C means any snow is turning to slush and everything is wet , and road and footpaths are a total mess. However, get the permanent snow and temperatures below -5°C and it's glorious! You get so much more light at night, everything is dry and crisp, skys are often crystal clear, Northern Lights are visible, roads and footpaths stay clear, and everyone can and do get out and walk, ski, or do other winter sports.
Quite astounding that the commentator managed to talk all about Olavinlinna for several minutes but completely failed to mention that it located in the city of Savonlinna, itself well worth a visit (the entire region too, in fact).

The further north you go in the winter time, the temperature drops but the cold doesn't feel colder as the air is less moist with lakes and rivers. -35c is way more easier to take on your skin far in the north than in the south where there are is more lakes and stuf. And as others pointed out, there is no bad weather, only bad clothing for the weather at hand. Long story short, come visit us in Finland at any time of the year, your journey will always be pleasent. Just remember to pack clothing for all climates.

I think happy is the wrong word. Content would be better. Happiness is associated with joyfulness. My experience with Finns is that they are quiet. And as a lover of Jean Sibelius I have immersed myself in his music. And the music is generally soulful, grand, descriptive and thoughtful. So I think happy is the wrong word, and perhaps a trite misleading. And it is important to note the the majority of the people originate from much further to the east. Indeed, many Finns have "eastern" type eyes. Historically, the 10% "upper classes" were Swedish only speakers. This has changed I understand. Brian Oosterbeek The Netherlands.

    • @timoterava7108
      @timoterava7108 Před rokem

@@brian5154 I agree mostly with your post. Few corrections though:
Genetically the Finns are Europeans. We (the Finns) don't originate from anywhere else - although many different groups of our ancesters did, some bringing the (base of the) language and some of the culture. The "Eastern" (Siberian) share of our genes is some 5-10 %, which is somewhat higher than with the rest of the Europeans on average.
Until mid-1800's the minority language Swedish was the only official language. If you wanted to get education, rise in the society etc. one had to became a Swedish-speaker - regardless of ones background, ethnicity or native language. Therefore many Swedish-speakers were/are not Swedes.
After that the tide turned and especially during the change of the century/early 1900's many former Swedish-speakers returned back/switched to Finnish.
Today 5.2% (4.8%, if you exclude the Åland Islands) of the Finns are officially Swedish-speakers - although most are actually bi-lingual and some even in reality native Finnish-speakers. Today - after centuries of language switching, name changing and cross-cultural marrying - it is impossible to tell by language or name only, how "Swedish" or "Finnish" ancestry one has.

Interesting fact: Helsinki gets most of its tap water from lake Päijänne. The water is so pure that it's only mildly treated and many people dare to drink Päijänne water raw. The pipeline to Helsinki is over 120 km (75 miles) long and it's bored into solid rock, making it the longest rock tunnel in the world. The Päijänne tunnel starts from Pulkkilanharju, which we saw in this video. Check the Google map to see details and locations yourself.

I really love your output and insightful commentary. Let us hope that some of these days you take the trip and enjoy some of the North European tranquility. You might catch some spectacular metal gigs in the process. Like salmiakki, the Finnish metal music might grow on you, once you get closer to the millennia old corpus of mythos some of the lyrics set to tones by both the Finnish classical composers and many of our modern day metal bands hails from. Compilations such as Kalevala and Kanteletar document some choice bits and pieces of that wealth of pagan tradition grown in the region.
As for the prospect of experiencing the undescribable beauty of the winter forest, and related risks thereof, I can assure you that during the last few thousand years we've learned a thing or two about keeping people alive and happy through the wintertime. You'd be surprised how energy-efficient our houses with their double/triple glass windows etc. are. And clothing, winter clothing is just getting better and better. New materials, mechanisms and technologies coming available all the time. The Canadians know all about it, too. Should all else fail, we'll have sauna, food, alcohol, song, dance and sex to keep our guests warm -- all of which we always have plenty to go around. I am not sure how the Canadians are holding on on these latter counts... Moreover -- there is considerable amount of constantly cumulating scientific evidence pointing toward the fact that the coldest winter days are already well past this particular species of mammals currently dominating the planet.
On a related note, especially pertaining to what you said after 13:41 , we already know that the cynical corrupt *ucks addicted to the bribes coming from the bloated fossil fuel industry (and where ever else the rest of the dark money rearranging the American governmental institutions might flow from) have made _absolutely_ sure that more, more and still more of formerly livable and farmable coastal regions all around this planet of ours are going to turn into shattered archipelagos. Some probably more beautiful than others. So there shall be that wish granted. I simply had to point that out, since you are a citizen of a superpower and can in her local voting booth might be able to try and resist the otherwise irresistible forces of greed and corruption about to screw us all over in a pretty biblical manner. I hope you understand and don't take any offense from my tone. I'm not fluent in English but you know I mean well.
Love your videos. Keep up the good work, Tysheen!

Yes, the Aland islands (there is a circle over the A hence the pronunciation) has a peculiar status within Finland and the EU. It is almost a mini-state, notionally under the control of Finland whereby Finland cannot really impose any EU regulations on the islands and the islands can veto any international agreement that Finland agrees. The islands can pass legislation, for example on education, health, policing etc.etc from a Parliament of 30 members (and one MP in the Finnish Parliament) representing the islands population of approx. 30,000. Meanwhile, the islands are culturally and linguistically allied to Sweden. More peculiar still is that agreements of 1856, 1921 and 1947 impose a state of neutrality on the islands and also imply that Russia has the right of military surveillance in the area. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of Finland joining NATO might be in that case.

Me too! And very annoying that every other place was presented in the summer and only Rovaniemi in winter. There is summertime in the north too, sun stays up all ”night” and never sets, wild flowers everywhere, you can hike and swimm and fish…

I agree, American has a lot of nature. The problem there is that the city planning has been miserable compared to much of Europe. Too many people live surrounded by artificial environments and endless row's of buildings.
The nature is there, but it is not accessable as it is in Finland and for people there. You don't have so much forests in towns and cities or so called Everyman's rights.

Tysheen you need to respond to some videos about Spain. When people think about Europe they think about the Scandinavian countries and France and Italy.Spain is there and is the most underrated.Forget Barcelona in Spain there are others and Madrid the capital has a lot to offer.I can recommend some videos if you can't respond to them you can watch them in your comfort or private. Some of them are long so you have to watch them privately.Spain also has all the four seasons but some parts hardly get snow with some part mild winters. You hate snow so you will love. One thing I like about Spain is that it is naturally beautiful.

Well as a native finn i don´t always even notice all the beuty from the nature becouse i´m so used to it. I visited in Mikkeli about 7 years ago. I didn´t went there for the view but the most beautifull woman i´ve ever met in my life. I spented my best summer vacation with her. Most of the time in Mikkeli and few days in my place other side of the country in Kokkola (my home place is at cost of sea).
Cities are nice places of live, but it´s nice to have nature really close to you. As i was a small boy and in school age when ever i get angry for the world and society i took a walk in near by forrests (all alone). It got such a relaxing influence to me that it was a habbit for a long time. These days parents would be horrified if them children would take such walks in the forrest all buy them selves 😂.

You don't seem to be familiar with the concept and common practice of using clothes for warmth 😆
And actually, while skiing, it tends to be that you get too hot an not cold, so you haven't done skiing. But to be fair, initially inexperienced people walk with 🎿 s and that is both boring and you are then more likely to experience cold as you don't produce enough heat from the exercise.
