There are some good videos about visas for Americans. But if you, as an American, just come to visit as a tourist you don't need a visa and can stay for 90 days. In fact you can visit any country in the 'Schengen' region and basically every country inside the EU. I'm Dutch and visited the US 3 times and never needed a hotel. I always stayed with friends.
