Victor Wembanyama Is Something That We Cannot Comprehend | J. Kyle Mann | The Ringer

- As a basketball prospect, Victor Wembanyama is borderline incomprehensible, in the best way possible. He is a confounding, exceedingly rare cross section of extreme size and skillful polish, and he’s a virtual certainty to be the top selection in the 2023 NBA draft. Because most anything seems possible for the 7-foot-3 Frenchman, the mythology about his game and upside has already begun to grow. In this video, J. Kyle Mann lays the foundation for the discussion with some basic explanations about what has scouts so over-the-moon excited about Wembanyama’s future.

J Kyle Mann has the most soothing voice in the world. And on top of that he's a basketball mastermind. His videos are always top-notch
His videos are above the rest fr
When he was listing top prospects, most of them centers, I added in the back of my mind "Sam Bowie, Greg Oden, Ralph Sampson...." Yeah, teams should get excited. But taint nothing happened yet. I really want this kid two work on knee strength!
Right on, he's my favorite too

As a euro fan, the only issue with his move to Metro is that he's not playing in the Euroleague, and it would have been interesting to see him play against top competition in Europe as a first option, with a bunch of old slavs in the paint who want to beat him up. That is kinda smart from an NBA perspective since it "saves" him from further scrutiny, but at the same time US scouts and media seem to care more about two games against teenagers than the proper pro ball he's been playing for years. Even Luka was questioned after being Euroleague MVP because he didn't play against Kansan and SMU.
I agree, it's a smart move from him for his future in the NBA but a frustrating move for us, Euroloeague fans. However, going to the Mets 92 allowed so much more freedom to create his own moves, his own shots. Because the Asvel (TP's team in Lyon) have so much more pressure for results, the coach wouldn't let him do those one legged 3pts shots. So we have less game of Victor but probably more minutes on court. We can't see him facing rustic slav centers but the french league is full of athletic guys, no doubts. Also we got to see him play against Lithuania and Bosnia with the french national team and he dominated
@@OhDuur It's a smart move. Wembanyama is now playing under Vincent Collet, a well-respected coach in Europe who encourages young talents. He has a track record coaching French talents and Victor will benefit from Collet's basketball mind.
American here, but I think the idea was both a safety thing for Victor as well as a reps thing. With his previous team Victor *may* have ended up being the first option, but he likely wouldn't have been allowed to go wild and experiment the way he is on Met92 rn. This way he can get in some creation reps without pressure to win win win as he would've in Euroleague where he would've likely had to conform more to a specific role for the sake of the teams success.
Euroleague watcher(Maccabi fan) here and I am glad he is not in the Euroleague this year(I still watch illegal streams of his games)
Way too many games for him right now
when you add the french league/cup and the Euroleague together
I understand your wish! But he made a good decision! he choose metrpolitan to do 1 game for week in a dense lgue.... Look monaco and asvel results in the euroleague and look their results in the french league... during the week, he can worked on his physical ... he is only 18 old years... It's silly to see him played each 3 day... This young man keeps to grown
J. Kyle Mann is my favorite basketball analyst; man I wish we had these videos every week.
I'm starting to think Wembanyama is actually less likely to get injured than past gigantically tall players--mostly because he's so remarkably flexible. When J Kyle Mann said, "Could he get hurt? Yes" the clip he showed looked like a disastrous slip, based on how his legs bent and splayed, but he just popped up from it. Most huge players in the past have been pretty stiff, even if they were good--they didn't have the athleticism, agility and flexibility of Wembanyama. Obviously, injuries can still happen to anyone and Wembanyama's size is always going to be a risk factor, but I think (similar to someone like Olajuwon) he has the right attributes to have a solid chance of avoiding catastrophic injury.
My thoughts as well. Flexibility is a big part in keeping away from injury, but at that height its still a concern because I'm convinced he's 7'4 w/o shoes after seeing him next to players like Zach Edey who is 7'3 w/o shoes and Wemby's taller than him.
@@KiraDaBeastNY I've seen a vid about how black people's feet is usually less arched than euro/asian types, and then less prone to long injuries. Can't remember the vid's name though...
He looks like an injury waiting to happen to me
Look at the stuff this kid Eats🤦🏾♂️👀 he eats all natural Raw fish/ chicken and does yoga n shit…. He’s actually taking excellent care of his body.
Kinda like what y’all all said about Zion?
Give this man more resources. He’s a content genius. All the J. Kyle Mann pieces are the only reason I am still subscribed!!!!

Rarest of rare combinations of length, fluidity, skill, and will in a young player. No prospect comes close as far as physical "eye test" goes except the hall of greats like Wilt, Lebron, Kareem. These were guys who as PREP players emerged as bonafide for sure things.
Victor is there. Only a injury can derail what will soon be obvious, that this guy is the true NEXT GUY. The guy that the next generation of basketball will be built around. Not a single human alive on a ball court will be able to deal with this kid if the luck of injury and simple nutrition and determination takes hold.
VW simply has incredible skills defensively in regards to positioning and IQ, coupled with his outwordly measurables. There situations where he is completely 1-3 feet drifting afar, and as the driver converges on the rim, this guy from feet away is able to swat the shot at the rim. I truly believe this Kid would wake up and in "bust" form be a Robert Gobert with slightly more offense. That means someone who wins multiple DPOY awards, and averages a career double/double with some eye popping occasional nights. This is this kid's FLOOR.
The Upside of Wenbanyama is this generations' Wilt Chamberlain. And due to Lebron coming along and devaluing (in some regards)the need for "most championships", the possibility of his numbers and eye popping feats are greatly anticipated. This kid will offer that in abundance. And it won't be the over-generated "simple things" like a breakaway dunk, but rather this guy at this size will nightly make people say WOW; WHAT DID I JUST SEE? Not to mention his versatility and offensive prowess already in a spaced league should offer potential sensational performances beginning in his rookie year.
Other unique prospects brought a sense of flair like a Lamelo, Lebron, Zion, Kobe, KG, a Bird, a Magic, and Pistol Pete/Iverson. But Kid with his physical profile offers that and the game to go with it. It's going to be a pleasure watching this kid in the league.
There is simply no ceiling barring significant injury what this kid can accomplish. Not too many people have ever existed with this size/skill. I truly will predict that MJ rookie scoring record could be in danger. I think it's a high regard, but not even CLOSE to what my heart tells me this kid can statistically accomplish.
Your comment is great, and shows, for me, an upper understanding of the game. Thank you for your analyse.
@@Emile97427 Thank you sir. In a past life, draft analysis WAS my life. I'm excited about this kid's potential. And Thank you for the comment.
so far so good. great analysis
The writing for this video's script was phenomenal. Flowed effortlessly with poeticism and clarity. Great stuff!
I think most people are rooting for him to stay healthy, because that combination you went over is just so exciting that you don't want it to be taken away from injuries, but history isn't kind to players that tall, but to every rules there has to be an exception, and I don't think I'm alone in hoping he's it, especially since he definitely seems very comfortable with his size since he developed at such an early age.
I think his most important goal that he mentioned is getting strong like Giannis. Obviously Giannis the Freak for a reason, but he was once upon a time a skinny guy from Greece, and look at him now. If Wemby can bulk up a bit, just enough to strengthen his joints and bones from injuries, man, what is the ceiling for him? Greatest player ever? I’m hoping it happens because he could be something we’ve never seen before.
@@julianbell9161 Giannis grew up poor and a little bit malnourished. He also didn't have expectations heaped upon him before he started. Very little wear and tear on his body. Most of the other guys played a ton before they completely develop their bodies
Of course there are high profile examples of tall dudes getting injured but is there evidence it’s really more common than small dudes? I feel like it’s just common. For every Oden and Yao Ming, there’s a KD, Kareem, and Hakeem. Being 7’ isn’t a death sentence. 🤷♂️
There is evidence. Jimmy high roller did a video on it I believe
@@enderlain385 It's not like Vic was playing in AAU tournaments in the US playing crazy games every weekend. He's probably been on an academy team for awhile now.
Yeah, I've been keeping my eye on this kid for a few years now. It's been insane watching his growth, literally and in skill-set. His defensive instincts are better than 99% of the league he isn't old enough to join yet. He is the most insane prospect I have ever witnessed. I can't get enough of this kid.
yeah i remember watching him at the u16 fiba euro championship
his athletic and mental tools were always apparent, but his improvement from a skill perspective is on another level. he gets so much better every single year, and his ball handling + shooting flashes get more and more consistent
his splits dont look great yet, but the guy isnt even in the nba yet, i can only imagine what wembanyama will look like once hes in america
He's more man than you lol
Kinda like what y’all all said about Zion?
@@svenjorgensenn8418 I mean, he's definitely taller. If that's all that matters, sure.
dude you're just jumping on the hype bandwagon like everyone else.
I was born the year Hakeem Olajuwon was drafted, and he's my favorite player of all time. There's a lot of him i see in Wemby, especially since the guys who inspire him (KD, Dirk) were inspired by Dream. I hope his health holds up, he's going to be special.
Kyle is a savage for 1:54 😅

Dude you don't get enough credit for putting out some of the best content from the Ringer. Big ups to you and Megan!
Still absolutely unfathomable how little hype there was around Luka in comparison. Those dudes are in the same ballpark.
Luka isn’t 7’4
He said luka🤣🤣🤣😂😭
@@sudiboa1296 Yeah, but Wemby could be a bust from injury, which you couldn't say about Luka.
@@toteispoe4 luka could be a shell if he gets injuried too
guys I agree with you, wemby is a phenomenal prospect, and in many ways more unique than Luka. I'm just saying that it's kinda criminal that Luka, as never-before-seen Euro league superstar at that age, was not even the clear #1 consensus pick. He should have been seen as the prospect of the decade.
J. Kyle Mann videos are the reason I’m subscribed
Great vid! I've had my ❤️ broken too many times. If he doesn't break in half it will be a miracle. Fingers crossed he stays healthy 👏👏
Just came to say love the vids, been rocking since the beginning. The edits on this are hilarious 😂😂😂
nice to see you back...
Back again with an Absolute masterpiece!🔥
Lupe !!!! Great video Kyle
Just watched Wemby in person in his first home game as a spur - eye level with him in the stands it was exactly like the Jurassic park meme - had to return to this video -everything in this still applies - very f-ing exciting to be an nba fan rn -also an incredible (!) video ,Kyle Mann you are the best basketball content creator on YT - hope to see more from you and Megan I know this must take forever to make and it shows in everything you make. Its been too long. Welcome back Kyle!
A new J Kyle Mann video lets gooooooo. Wemby is unreal, I don't see how he busts without injury. Would be cool to see him land with the Spurs
Kyle, that subtle Fyre Fest visual reference was exceptional. I laughed.
Big ups for the Lupe shout-out

We’ve been waiting
I know it was literally a split second, but kudos on the fyre fest water bottle guy joke. Subtle and brilliant. 👨🍳 💋

Letting you know that I agree 👍
Well done J. Kyle. Very excited to have the French Freak in San Antonio.
The french freak, thats good
I come from the 2023. You were right
He opened with a Lupe Fiasco reference. Automatic W. We are in for a good one
Stellar Video, Kyle. Love your sensibility, humor and insight. So happy to see you have a new vid up.
My main question regards his frame. We already saw Chet go down in off-season play and miss the year. Big, lanky kids seem more vulnerable to lower body injuries. I lived through the unhappy Porzingis era in Dallas when he missed more than half his games with us. Just a concern.
The Real Estate reference was wildly unneccessary but I'm here for it.
Disagree
J Kyle Mann and Ben from Thinking Basketball are the best
Honestly, seeing Wemby alongside guys we have height w/o shoes measurements for, I wouldn't be surprised if he's actually 7'4+ w/o shoes but said he's 7'3 because it is a less concerning height.
Sort of like how KD is really 7 foot but he says he is 6'9 since the dude likes to play outside rather than in the paint
Nahh he said he was 7’3 w/o shoes but that measurement was from 2 years ago , that dude is 7’5 on the court because they play with shoes
@@aedaed3605 Nahh NBA officially measured heights w/o shoes in 2019 and KD came back 6’9.5 , so with shoes he’s like 6’11 at best
4:02 The French Revolution nickname goes hard af
I haven't even gotten over pros being born in the 90's yet and you're gonna drop this 2004 on me
W Lupe Fiasco reference 🙌🏽🔥
More amazing content
Bruh, I was GONE when you showed that Fyre festival doc. 🤣🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀💀
At the end of the day it's all going to come down to health for Wemby. As we've seen historically, the taller you are the harder it is to be on the court consistently. Yes there are outliers (like Kareem) but for the most part if you're 7'2+ you struggle with availability.
The suttle Fire Festival joke was SUPER funny
And now he gets to train under Popovich and potentially mentored by Duncan. He's going to be sensational.
Just want to say a Lupe Fiasco reference is great. totally underrated MC
My team is too good to get him anyway so I just want this kid to stay healthy. It'd be awesome if we get 10 years with him in the league.
he is gonna be a monster like luka in the future....i already saw a potential in him in his FIBA U16....he is gonna be a franchise player soon.....
J kyle I'm drunk is Australia right now but this shit is great keep it up my man, also K O C is the man
New J Kyle Mann is like Christmas and im not joking
Use to work out with someone with his frame. That's tough off season work for a few years. The dangers of increase size and strength fir a few months is injuries as the mind adjusts to the differences irrationally until re-trained.
Let's see how management guard their man.
Also shoutout to Real Estate - great band and song
Waitin on that scary terry vid, one of the most underrated guards in the league in my opinion
That Fyre Fest reference kills me.
Can't wait till I c him on 2k next year
Im just imagining this guy as a goalie in soccer!!!

Victor the Super Unicorn Wembanyama
Offensive ceiling of KD. Defensive ceiling of Rudy Gobert. And then some. That's outrageous.
Imagine of this man decides to just play the 3 and become a match-up nightmare
he's a matchup nightmare for any position. He just needs to add some strength to not get bodied out of his spots. He literally towers over almost the whole league!
He played the 3 in the 4th quarter in his last game with France. The team that will got him will have insane amount of flexibility, they will be able to play with 2 Center like the CAVS except Wemby can provide spacing cause he can shoot 3´s unlike Mobley, or even with 3-4 Big men, if he land in New Orleans or Magic they could play Valanciunas, Wemby, Zion and Murphy or with Wemby/Bamba, Bol Bol, Wagner and Paolo.
Just imagine Wemby and Bol Bol on the same team, these 2 can block shot at the rim AND 3 pointer, and they can both shoot.
Idk why you guys see a dude like this and want to put him on the perimeter 😂.
1. He's good but he'd get cooked by 3s
2. The guy projects to be ELITE in drop coverage, the most impactful defensive scheme with the right anchor
Or why not just make him an excellent drop defender who can play around switches and put him in a position to practically use his length defend his side of the half court on defense? When locked in Giannis can do this and offers resistance at every point of attack while even assisting whoever is at the big under the rim to track the ball and protect the rim. There aren't many other bigs who can do this (JJJ to some degree, Bam Adebayo, Evan Mobley) and they are a HUGE asset when it comes to defensive matchups especially come playoff time. Y'know when the 3-balls ain't dropping and the only way to score is to get at the hoop.
Looking for the source of the image at 4:02. Cool picture
Did you get a new mic? The voiceover sounds outstanding
