Is this actually him?
Obviously the frame is worrying. However, the last time a tall skinny guy from Europe with a unique last name and great work ethic came into the league, he put on a ton of muscle weight and became the best player in the nba
Well do you think everyone has giannis genetics. No. That doesn't account for his malnutrition because of poverty. So when he came over here, he grew muscle. Unlike most of these skinny tall guys
@@maliprince8703 true but he grew his muscle mostly from bulking have u seen him lift weights. He Litterly has the mamba mentality the kid will need that
@@maliprince8703 to be fair if you were making NBA money and your one job was to bulk up I feel like you could make that happen pretty easy
Weight on a big may cause more strain on the body, especially from jumping. Staying the skinnier KD style, may be the way to longevity perhaps.
@@maliprince8703 exactly my man, Giannis was raised in poverty and part of his skinny looks was because of this.
And now he’s running the league

Something to keep in mind is that sports medicine has evolved greatly the last couple of decades. Surguries that were once not available or were experimental, are now routine. I wish this young man a long and healthy career.
And it is precisely in the last two decades, as specified in the video, that we have seen a complete lack of 7’2+ players who can play without staggering amounts of injuries.
Sports medicine has not evolved in a way that prevents long thin players from getting hurt. And the recoveries for the injuries they’re more susceptible to are very long.
TL;DR, in the past few decades specifically, nothing has changed at all in regard to this topic. We can only wish the best for Wemby
Load management is probably even more important, especially for BIG men. Do not think it will be uncommon for these guys only to play once or twice a week in the regular season in the future.
@@DeckofLies Right, it's not the injuries, it's their build. Being in surgery half of your career doesn't prevent the injuries. You can only patch up so much. And surgery itself takes a toll on the body.
In Yao's defense, in between his Country forcing him to play and the NBA he was playing like 200 games a year. He held up pretty well given the circumstances. That man was FIRE

That injury risk is just something every team has to gamble with. Thats why prospects like him are protected from a very young age. By the looks of it, he has a great team around him.
It's just amazing when the sporting world unearths gems like Victor Wembanyama 💯
Idk he seems like he is from a tough stock, he definitely has "created player" potential #sorrysolate
He does have a good team. He went up to the EuroLeague at 17 to prove he could play, he did that in spades. After that year he was basically a lock to be number 1 in the NBA draft two years later so his team had him move back down to the French league so he only had to play once a week during the season, and didn't have to travel a lot. So the last two years hes basically been load managing, and just working on his development.
LET'S GO SAN ANTONIO SPURS!!!🎉🙏🙌🥳🔥
Read your bible! (KJV, preferably) ♥
No it's not something every team has to gamble with in this way. The Spurs and NBA both know damn well that players over 7'3" are ticking time bombs. IN 77 years of NBA history, only a handful of players that height had any good years, much less rings and play on the level of a Lebron, Jordan, or Shaq.
Off the top of my head, Wilt Chamberlain. Good longevity and led NBA in minutes played 9 times. Chamberlain was a natural athlete but also put a huge emphasis on physical conditioning which I can imagine is critical for big men to avoid injury.
He was “only” 7’1 though
@@theleftuprightatsoldierfield they were measured without shoes so mostly 7’2 or 7’3 with shoes
@@theleftuprightatsoldierfield They're just splitting hairs to make a story of it. Everybody knows the NBA is notorious for having height wrong. There hasn't been that many players 7'1 and above to gather data from. Its called too small of a sample size

@@theleftuprightatsoldierfield only?
One of the major contributing factors to Yao Mings injuries is the fact that he rarely had any time to recover. He practically had no offseason to rest having to play for the national team during the summer.
There is some guy playing today whose dad had a few seasons in the NBA but had them late in his career because he was from some Soviet country. It's just be nice to get these international players without national confliction getting in the way.

I’m glad Sabonis gets so many mentions even though he came into the league practically a veteran with major injury issues already limiting him down. He was the true monster of nature in his time.
sabonis was a beast. he was jokic before jokic. he came into the NBA so late and STILL had a hof career.
Criminally underrated
Yeah, Sabonis was a MONSTER!! Skilled beyond belief.
Yes, he wasted his best years being forced to play for the Soviet machine.
Why are we taking about him like he’s 35
Back after my Spurs won the lottery, I’m so damn excited to get Wemby. We are the perfect landing spot. Spurs are great at developing young talent, time to do it with Wemby.
If you like boring.

I ll need to reactivate my Poundingtherock account 😊 had the chance to witness the full 3 amigos career under Pop (late broadcast time and ver here 😅) and would like Pop to be rejuvenated by the prospect of welcoming this young (good) lad in the NBA.
Also know the SA institution will nurse and protect him the right way
They could use him like a super weapon. My take: He trains hard off the court, gets crazy durable in the gym, and only plays key games likes it’s 2k mycareer. With limited minutes on the court, injury risk goes down and the rest of the league have few opportunities to figure him out on defense.
I was here when Jimmy told us a yr ago 😮

Victor Webyomama is gonna be a great player. I can just see it. He has all the tools. And with a name like that how could he not be great? Plus he's a foreign big man and he's got that Giannis type motor that you want your big men to have. All the best big men that have high competitive motors and got a feisty edge to them are all foreign players, Webyomama, Jokic, Embiid, Giannis. American big men are soft like AD and miss tons of games and don't care about winning or being great.

Sabonis was insanely talented! If only he went to the NBA when he got drafted. He literally played his best physical years in the UDSSR, not the US.
I love watching his highlights. His basketball style and IQ are so similar to Jokic imo.
Love to Lithuania from Austria! We "only" got Poetl (Spurs) but your (also very small) country produces TOP Basketball players on a daily basis it seems. :D
Love your videos, especially this one! Masterfully paced and produced. Your voice is honey, and insightful comments and research are amazing. Thank you! As for the percentages being SERIOUSLY stacked against Victor, that is simply undeniable. I've been a lifelong Blazers fan since 1979, and I've seen Sam Bowie 7'2" out of Kentucky (drafted along with Jordan) break his leg at the actual game in Portland's Memorial Coliseum. Then we had Greg Oden - another #1 pick - go down with repeated knee injuries. Both were generational talents in their own right had they stayed healthy, and therein is the cruel rub - they simply can't. In Victor's case, he's obviously bright and coordinated, but he will need to add another 50 pounds in muscle to be in the NBA...and his height and frame will suffer as a result. The writing is on the wall. Perhaps the X factor in all of this is that sports medicine and treatments for high-end professional athletes have never been better, and I hope Victor can rely on science and medicine to extend his basketball career. Regardless of talent or physical stats, he seems like a really good human being. I am rooting for you Victor!
i love your intensity bro. you have that killer mentality that you need to become an all time great.
I say that about Yao anytime I talk about him to someone. His talent and skills was actually unbelievable when you consider his height. It’s a tragedy he spent most of his career injury plagued
Yeah exactly....being that tall and so skilled is soo rare he even go toe on toe with shaq
Very true
Yao Ming - injuries
Thabeet - bust
Porzingis - injuries
Bol Bol - G League talent
Marjanovic - injuries
Tacko Fall - G League talent
I remember he used to shoot the technical free throws
@@csanadhorvath Bol Bol shot 28% from the three-point line, Victor sitting on 27%. And already getting injured.
Yao Ming was a hall of famer. Only guy Shaq said he feared in the league. But yeah he couldn't stay healthy.
I hear a lot of people talking about how bulking up decreases injury risk, but is that necessarily true. When you're 7'3+ tall, doesn't having too much weight put a lot of strain on your body. Yao Ming's injury was stress fracture, which I imagine was partially caused by his weight of 310 pounds. Being super tall increases your injury risk, but not by as much as you might think. There are two reasons why. First, a lot of tall people have gigantism. People with gigantism are far more likely to be weak and get injured simply because they don't grow the same way as normal tall people and their musculoskeletal system cannot handle their height. Victor Wembanyama doesn't have gigantism, so his risk is already reduced. The second problem is that there are so few people that tall, so you often have to make a sacrifice. You don't have a large enough pool to choose people who are going to be as agile and injury-resistant as the shorter people in the NBA. I mean there aren't enough tall people in the world to find one as agile as the guards in the NBA, so of-course they are going to have a higher chance of getting injured. Injuries are highly inversely correlated with your control over your body. Skill in manoeuvring your body and understanding where your body parts are at all times will reduce your risk of injury, especially in the fast-paced athleticism-based game.
Like everything else, there's a healthy balance. Put on too much muscle and you could easily become injury prone due the loss of flexibility and just too much weight on a frame not built to handle it.
Bulking up help protect against injury because the muscles protect the bones and cartilages. There's just no way to determine the ideal proportion, more so individually. But with today's NBA with less body banging, tall players will also have longer careers like the smaller players.
Yes being taller does means greater likelihood of injury so adding mass also makes it more difficult on your joints etc. That’s why these super bigs have short career spans, but they’re careers will be shorter if they don’t put on weight, because he’s not gonna be able to battle in the post if he remains a twig
Being lanky is worse
If they don’t neglect tendon strengthening then the big man can last a lot longer than what we have previously seen. It is okay to build muscle as long as you also focus on flexibility and tendon strengthening. If the medical team can work on day by day form reconstruction, players like d rose, Shaun Livingston could have avoided their injuries - for both of them tendon neglect and form was their downfall. It is is inevitable for it to happen to players like ja morant and Zion Williamson if the trainers don’t put focus on that aspect of their injury prevention.
There is no doubt about what Vic can achieve, I love basketball, and I hope and pray he can make it better for as long as possible. Stay healthy, stay strong and focus on your personal development. That's all I ask for, please🙏🙏🙏!!!.

@alida flus Yeah he has to put on muscle, or hell get injured.
You know that's impossible right?
@@naturalmystic1262 no its not impossible for people to gain weight. I don't know wut ur on about.
What I hear is there have been such a small number of tall guys in the NBA history .. yet the video keeps comparing the ratios of injury across athlete heights categories. I'm no statistician but to me that makes zero sens statistically speaking, you cannot just compare the average number of a group of thousands units with the average number of a group of less than 20 units. So it's a nice video, raises an interesting point, but the statistical biases just make it irrelevant
@@thanks8110 Look at how small his joints are. People like that can't put on muscle very easily.

Just like all scientific disciplines, sports medicine is always moving forward. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future more and more of these athletic giants are able to maintain their physical health longer into their careers. Not to mention changes in managing and coaching regarding load management; play him 25-30 minutes a game, 50-60 games a year for ten or twelve seasons rather than 35-40 minutes a game as many games as he's healthy for six or eight seasons.

A lot of prospects think like this, but most in the first picks don't. At his age he seems very level headed, I've never met him so it's just a assumption. Also, and for me it's the biggest thing, both is parents are accomplished sportsmen, his dad a long jumper. He said that he learned from a young age how to run properly. I think that sounds simple at face value, but having a professional in a different sport based around being tall and running teach you how to run, jump and "fall" properly is massive, I believe it's the reason WHY he's so fast and agile in his frame, he's had that since his father taught him. With this, he didn't just suddenly spurt into his height, he's apparently been taller than most his age for a while. This means that he's super used to his body, his physiology is used to his body and tensions, as it develops - we're talking about a kid here so I won't describe him like a machine, but he's grown up in this form. All of this should reduce his injury proneness, and puts him in such a good position. On the other end, accidents happen, other players happen, and so injuries happen - to all players - he knows this, his family and coaches and everyone who cares knows this, and I'm sure he'll get the right support to ensure his longevity - cause this kid loves the game and he's not just gonna want to become the best as priority, he's gonna want to enjoy it for as long as possible if I had to take a guess.
With all that worry around his frame, I too would risk everything to have this kid in my franchise and watch him - possibly - probably - bring a different play into the nba, and I'm so excited to see him get it. Raptors fan here, but for some reason I see this kid ending up with the Spurs.
Lebron had all the athleticism and skill but what no one knew was how special his mind is. Also no one outworks him. Stays out of trouble. I mean no one has ever been as hyped as him and he couldn’t possibly live up to it any better.
Facts 💯
Special mind? Its special all right. Dude can barely read a book.
yeah he had all the athleticism but skills??? big NO
Well yeah he could’ve stayed with his team and wanna ring organically instead of having to go to Miami, that would’ve been better scenario just off the top of the head lol
Remember when the chosen one became the frozen one?
Chet’s broke foot brought me here…
He is living up to the hype.
Solid content! As an older NBA fan that hasn't paid much attention since the early 2000's, you're helping me get back up to speed.
His height issue is an inconvenient truth for teams salivating over him, that's for sure. He's a high risk/high reward pick.
Jimmy put all of on game before ESPN and Woj lol
jimmy always ahead of time damn
Victor is slick with it! I’m excited to see how his future turns out, Goodluck my man hope to see you in the NBA very soon 💯
really wish with all my heart that he can stay away from injuries.... imagine how unstoppable he could be with a body as trained as giannis's ... its not gonna be easy ,he would have to train all day to the gym and the court and it has to be his only focus for a lot of years to get to that level physic because the taller you are the harder it is to build muscle cause your muscle are longer and more.....
Honestly, I would say give him some steroids to help him out, when you're that size you need everything you can get to gain muscle.
@@HoloScope they are getting tested for doping ma man....
@@HoloScope Nah it would be too risky for his size
@@rjbunker5412 why would that be risky
thing is... its not just about muscle..
joints, ligaments, bones, etc are under extra stress the taller you are (weight/gravity) so sadly I feel like we're just waiting to see when, not if.
You really blew my mind. This is why I follow you
Excellent video Jimmy
Oh how fast they forget about Zion Williamson, the hype behind him was way higher then Victor in my opinion he's the biggest prospect since bron and he's also more nba ready Victor like you said needs to add weight
Is he playing this year? If so the Pels are making a deep run imo
ppl act like wasn’t averaging 27 5 7 ☠️
100%. Really hope Zion keeps it together this year because him healthy is also something I've never seen on a bball court. Absolutely insane athleticism, Zion's hops would be impressive if he was a skinny dude, let alone a flying refrigerator
This didn’t age well😂
@@victorwembanyama6917 bro zion got hype 3 years leading up to the year he was drafted Victor just now is
Y’all are getting me so hyped to see this guy play in the NBA
Greatly appreciated man. Have a good one.
I just want to say that this video is very well done. 👏
SPOT ON JIMMY
Found about him last year from 2k. Had 7 mvps bruh and avg 29 on his career. Idc if it’s 2k but the fact that he’s actually 7’3 and has a skill like that, got me interested.
Thank you for defending Yao Ming, even tho his stats doesn't stand out (especially reb) he is criminally underrated. He was able to battle Shaq 1on1 and BBQ prime Dwight Howard every time they meet. I can't even believe when TMac didn't pick Yao Ming in one of his fantasy bball headsup and I felt betrayed by one of my favorite players growing up. No other teammates in the NBA would have done what TMac did on ESPN that just ain't right !!!
Anyways, in today's NBA Yao would definitely be efficient while have the ability to stretch out to the 3pt line and give trouble to all NBA teams... Probably BBQ Embiid too ~!
Yao is definitely better than Embiid
@@ejdiicuf LMAOOOO
@@Yzyenthusiast He's right Embiid is soft
TmAc mentality on basket is a ball hog scorer type mentality, watch more of is opinions on basket and you'll understand what I say
Ming did not accomplish enough to be a Hall of Famer. Just NBA sucking up to China.
Just hope he stay healthy and goes to a great development team
That dude got me twice with the intro and the not about LeBron thing ^^
Damn you JX
Great video
You really put the amount of hype into perspective and showed how he can only meet his potential if he stays healthy
Me coming from the Congo where he’s Dad is from I really like what I’m seeing. I know what matter It’s not about where you come from but what you really are on the court. I can’t wrap my head about how good this kid really is. I wish him good health and 20 years of NBA career. I’m 6’5 my wife is 6’2 we have 3 boys and I can’t wait to put them in basketball. (6,5 and 3)
Good luck you also. I didn't get the height but loved the game growing up
I hope this guy will have great success in the NBA...the Tanking game will start in 2 weeks
10 years from now we could be looking at all of the all time greatest players in nba history if he stays healthy
You’ve just watched this video showing no 7’3 player stays healthy and then said if he stays healthy he’ll be the goat
@@Tom-qb1rj training, science, and medicine today is on a different level than years ago my man, especially at the NBA
@@lanzz9518 this doesnt make sense considering porzingis plays at the same time and with virtually the same "training, science and medicine" advancements
Keep in mind, the kid is likely still growing, he may be 7'6" or greater by the time he plays his first NBA game!!!!
@@AcousticOlli that ain't true at all...that's some straight up boooool sheeeet. SMH, there's many cases of people growing additional inches up into 19, 20, and 21....you must not be familiar with medicine (I'm in PA school btw).
I disagree with the statement that "only" 3 of the 26 super-tall players made the HOF, that seems like a lot to me, considering the amount of players that have played in the nba.
I did some rough math using data i found on google and it turns out only 4,2 % of all players ever made the HOF, however of your listed 26, a whopping 11,5 % made it, so it is nearly three times as likely for a super tall person to get into the HOF.
You also have to consider that these people are just extremely rare, meaning that it is much less likely that they are super athletic, tough or skilled because they are closer to the normal person, just a lot taller and therefore recruited.
I have the same doubts with Victor that i have with Zion, their bodies just seem too different to stay healthy, but Victor has this serious amount of skill as you mentioned, and in the current NBA that is the most important, which makes him hard to pass up on at #1. You just can't throw that away because you know he might get injured.
It's Still way too small of a sample size to even mention.
That's very true
For this kid to make it he needs the help of MODERN HEALTH & TRAINING: Trainers should give him Low/No impact excercises to maintain his joints as well as Food supplements that strengthen bones and joints.
I was thinking the same thing, his joints are the weakest in his frame. Instead of just bulking up willy nilly, get him to swim a lot. The cardio and muscle development related to the activity is perfect for those that need less impact on their joints, while also building core strength that's also a common issue with big men when they start working on their post game.
The best case/evidence I got is Tim Duncan. His longevity is underrated, for how long he played at a high level as a PF. Along with his style of play, which I'd recommend to emulate 100%, his physique is a perfect example of a balanced development of "not too heavy, nor too light." He can post up people like Dwight, and still finesses his way in.
Knees over toes guy
I'm highjacking this comment thread because i was about to come here and say the same thing. I would also like to add that adding weight would be the wrong the to do. His frame wasnt made to carry a lot of weight. The problem with 7'0 just comes down to one thing and that's physics. Majority of peoples weight is above the knees and the mode weight you have the more pressure you put on the knees. Now add running and jumping on a basketball court for many years and thats more pressure on your knees, legs, foot, and back. If you look at basketball players these are the areas that are affected while they are playing and after they retire. To minimize this for 7"0 they shouldn't add weight just strengthen their muscles and joints. Best theory that has the most success is physical therapy rehab workouts. It reaches you to strengthen all your muscles instead of your main ones.
I totally agree with your analysis, however I would just say if there is one area that this kid seems legitimately different is how fluid and graceful he is for his hight.
Ppl rag on on his skinny and lanky frame but that may be the thing that actually sets him apart on wether or not he is injury prone. KP is the closest thing we’ve come seeing something like Victor but this kid may just finally break the ceiling and transcend the NBA for big men. There’s got to be one at least that finally does.
First thing i thought before i even watched the video was the minute he goes hard in the NBA his body is gonna either go hard and keep up or just breakdown at a critical rate. here's hoping he does well and goes without injuries that impact his career to much.
