Watermelon has a curly tendril where the fruit was connected to the vine during the growing process. If the watermelon is ripe, the curly tendril should be almost completely dried out. If the curly tendril is green, the watermelon was picked too early and is not ripe.
When the tendril closest to the melon is dry thats a good way to know.

I grew sugar baby watermelon for the first time last year. They are really sweet. Unfortunately, my watermelon didn’t fully ripened. Several things…planted them a little later than I should have, didn’t get that hot summer heat, and basically just ran out of time. I needed a good 30 more days.

Yes!I had my first crimson watermelon and it was ripe,sweet n juicy.I couldn't believe it being my first time.Im going to harvest one of my sugar baby this weekend,here in South Florida,we have been getting so much rain everyday for about aweak,I lost 3 crimson they split.🙏

I’m a “dirt and water” type of gal too..I mean things have been growing since the beginning of time without fancy, expensive “organic matter, mediums” etc. 🤦🏽♀️

Good video man! Typically the field spot (yellow colour) comes from growing it on the ground. It won't come if they grow up a trellis or fence. I did some a couple of years back and although small, it was super sweet. I'll be doing some again this season. You earned a sub!

Amazing looking crop. This may have convinced me to consider growing vertical melons, I did not know this was possible.
Hand water to have a personal relationship with your plants.....YES thought I was the only one!! I just cant do drip even here in new mexico because if all you have to do is flip the water on you dont spend enough time in the garden and things get out of hand, and you definitely dont get to witness the story of every little seedling.

The yellow spot is made from the underside of the melon sitting on the ground. Yours is not on the ground.
I had mine sitting on grass and no yellow spot.
They look perfect. I'm I Sydney, Australia and I'm going to try to grow them this summer. Hopefully the possums won't get to them like my pumpkins be cause I live right alongside the bush
The yellow spot you were looking for comes from the melon resting on the ground. You had these growing vertically. Watermelons are heavy feeders when it comes to growing them. They need a lot of water in the begining and towards the end you water less so they retain their sweetness.

Man I want to do some of these. If growing up a trellis, how tall does the trellis need to be, and how much space do they need between plamts?
I have a few sugar baby seedlings growing in my garage under my makeshift grow lights and plan to plant out them by a trellis once the nighttime temps warm up a bit. Are you growing them again this year? Curious how you trellised them. I love the idea of vertical gardening. I also see you didn’t support them. Did any snap off or were they ok? At nearly 10lbs, I’d worry about them falling off! Thanks for the great video!
You can support them with a stocking. It will stretch as the watermelon grows and support them along the way on the trellis

How much spacing did you give in planting since you trellised?
I'm growing watermelons for the first time this year (Crimson Sweet). I'm in northwest Arkansas, so a warmer climate and likely a slightly longer growing season. When you say, "the yellow spot", do you mean the ground spot? I'm unsure why that would be expected to appear on a trellised melon, since it doesn't touch the ground.
If the melons do well this year, I might try a yellow fleshed variety next year.
The vines are out of control. Can I cut them to keep them in the garden box?

I do but it will need to be supported.

@@SuperHumanGarden I’m about an hour north of Champaign, Illinois. We’re supposed to get down to 26 and possibly flurries tonight so I’ll be working on potting up my seedlings instead to have a plant sale in May.

Nice job! I have Crimson Sweet and Sugar baby planted now in Fl zone 10b. I also have 7 more types planted for trials. Your Sugar babies look very uniform in size which is quite impressive. You do not get the yellow belly on yours due to not being on the ground I assume!. My best Sugar baby was 20 lbs with subsequent melons being smaller. How often do you move your watermelon patch? Most authorities wait 5 years to re-plant in the same spot. I am waiting till the 4th year to re-plant in the same spot with watermelon.

I'm in Mid-Texas. I've tried for about 4 or 5 years to grow Watermelons 🍉....the rodents are good to watch and eat them! 😢 they don't leave me one! I've put out rat 🐀 traps...I've enclosed the melons with plastic, fabric and even vertices, everything you can think . what do you suggest?
I noticed you didn't have them in a sling. Have you found that the vine is strong enough to hold the vertical melon without a sling? Thanks for the video! I'm growing, cantaloupe, watermelon, and yellow melon on an arbor!
Yes, the vine was more than strong enough to hold them without the sling. The bigger varieties may not do well without a sling

Hi Jonathan I saw your comment.I plant my sugar baby n crimson in tires,8tires 23 plants from seeds,I have over 18 nice size watermelon as of June 7.I just harvest one of my crimson and it was sweet n juicy!And this is my first time growing melons😁,I still have many small one's the bees are busy over here.I lost 3to spliting.

Do you fertilize at all? I'm new to gardening I live in miami older folks say you can throw a seed in the yard down here and it will grow but the internet with their info 🤕😵🤷can you grow stuff without fertilizing it
I didn’t fertilize them last year and had a good turn out with just mixing a lot of sand, but in previous years I’ve used chicken manure to fertilize but I think the most important aspect is the sand from experience

Usually if its 85 degrees or above I will water a little everyday. Under 85 I will water every other day in the morning. If it rains a lot I won't water for a few days.

For the watermelon I use a combination of native soil, compost and sand!

Does this watermelon climb like cucumbers?
Yes
You wouldn't have the yellow spot because it was not on the ground. The yellow spot appears on fruit where it is touching the ground. If on a trellis like your fruit you just picked,, you have to look at the closest tendril to see if it is dried up. If it is, then its ready.

The yellow spot should be from sitting on the ground and yours were not.
