  • We’ve all got a local climb that’s really important to us. It might not be Alpe d’Huez or the Angliru, but that doesn’t matter. Si set out to reclaim his old record on Belmont Hill, just outside of Bristol.

    A few years on from his previous personal best, Si was going to need all the help he could get. He set out to see just how fast we could make his already very speedy Canyon Aeroad. For this, we were lucky enough to have the help of our friends at CeramicSpeed, to see how many free watts they could give Si. The bike was heavily modified and Simon chose the fastest possible equipment for his big attempt. Was 550W for over 3 minutes enough for Si to take the record? Watch the full feature to find out!

    I've been riding a bike since I was 6 (am 49 now) For work, school and everything in between. A regular, cheap commuter. I've been teasing my brother (has ridden race biks for a long time) for years, with all his fancy and expensive equipment, saying that he would get more exercise if he rode a crap bike. 2 yrs ago, i bought his old carbon, dura ace bike REAL cheap. And I'm a convert. Riding IS more fun, the faster you go. And shaving 0.5% of a personal best feels amazing :-D EVEN if the equipment is helping!

    That was probably one of the best GCN videos I've seen for a while (and I love the others). If the sea level pressure was 1.262 kg/m^3 then we're looking at (for example) 10 deg C and 70% humidity (dew point 5C) and 1030mb. Fifteen degrees warmer would save you 7 Watts as would a change of 50mb (down to 980). Combining both of them would give you 0.5km/h more from 28km/h saving you just over 3 seconds. You can do it Si, just come back on a warm day in low pressure, before you get too old. :-)

    A side note, all Watt Savings mentioned in this video are relative to Si’s projected power output. Our testing is often conducted at 250w output. At the 250w test output we record a 3 - 5 watt saving on UFO Racing Chains (depending on the chain and group set you ride) and a savings starting at 2.4 watts on the OSPW System ✌🏼

    My solution to the gear promblems would have been to run a 1x chainring on the small chainring position with shorter chainring bolts, drop all spiderless sprockets off the cassette and replace them with lightweight aluminium spacers. this creates a perfect chainline, doesn't cause b-tension problems with the rear derailleur, drops the front one, the small chainring and a lot of weight because the small steel sprockets are much heavier than the ti or al sprockets on spiders.

    • @ConsciousBreaks
      @ConsciousBreaks Před 4 lety +6

      @@andrew66769 As they mentioned in the video, a larger chainring means less sliding friction in the bushings. All they did was use a larger chainring + larger cog for the same gear ratio-makes sense.
      As for the rims, that's harder to say if the tradeoff between aerodynamics vs weight is worth it in this instance. On the one hand, Simon's average speed was 26.7kph, so aerodynamics is significant. On the other hand, a 7% grade means that weight starts to become quite significant. My intuition would be that a lighter rim would be better in this case.

    • @lyan9923
      @lyan9923 Před 4 lety +2

      @@ConsciousBreaks on a 3-minute time window, how significant is all that. they should have just gone with a lightweight fixie setup if they already calculated the best gearing.

    • @ConsciousBreaks
      @ConsciousBreaks Před 4 lety +2

      @@lyan9923 Si specifically says that he needs to change gears at 9:30. It was recommended to run a 1x, so I'm not sure why he didn't do that.
      It could be significant. After all, Si was only 1% slower than the KOM time, so he would probably only need 1-2% more watts-that's only 5-10W-to take the KOM. If we are to believe the claimed numbers in the video, e.g. 5W for not cross-chaining and 4W for larger jockey wheels, then it's actually hugely significant.
      You're right that he could have gone full weight-weenie, but it seems like he didn't want to do that for some reason. He could have used a super light saddle, removed the front derailleur, etc. It's kind of inconsistent with the theme of the video, but I guess he wanted to keep a fully-functional, practical road bike?

    These kind of videos are melting my brain. I don't see the use of cycling like this. It's just another mass consumerism hysteria. You didn't even pretend to train for it. I miss Si with his red specialized with alloy wheels and campy groupset. I miss Matt as well. I am always missing Matt.

      I did like the red specialized though.
      I have a canyon. I love it. I bought it after I was following GCN and some may say that GCN influenced me in a positive way.
      It's not about the bike or sponsoring. It's more about coherence to achieve a goal.
      I liked when you used WD40 on your bike. I don't agree with it. But, it helped you achieve your go in a practical and simple way. 2 weeks of 15 min short burst intensity training after your regular rides would have given you the same or better result to achieve your goal. Maybe I am just in a mood.
      Anyway, keep on being awesome.

    • @febigblockford3625
      @febigblockford3625 Před 5 lety +1

      I'm no expert, but I was thinking the same thing as Cha Keeb.... 808s for a hillclimb? The road surface looks rough, but 85psi in your tires? 120psi, your normal 454 wheels, normal cassette, train for a month and try again. Magic dust on the chain isn't getting it done Si!

  • @assadasdasdasda1342
    @assadasdasdasda1342 Před 5 lety +9

    So length of the road is 1400 meters, your time was about 180 seconds which gives average speed of 28 km/h. At that speed your components do not need to be super aero as speed is too small for high drag to kick in as drag is proportional to speed squared. So there is not need for high deep wheels and deep wheels are also heavier. What you should do is to keep rotating bike components as light as possible, light tires, light inner tube, not much deep wheels, if possible, having only one light front gear which also makes bike lighter as there is no front derailleur, light chain, light pedals, light shoes. Big jockey wheels as light as possible is good choice. Why is light rotating part very important? Because moment of your legs needed to accelerate rotating wheel is proportional to mass times squared radius of that mass. So wheel two times lighter needs moment of your legs on pedals two times smaller. This is specially important at riding in uphill where velocity of your bike is not constant but is full of accelerations. 26 inches wheels may even be better in such circumstances. One inch or so is enough deep in my opinion.

    • @david131092

      I had a go at GCN when they uploaded the bike video - but if it is 28kmh avg - on hills aero can become a bigger gain over 16mph/25kph - (unless your really strong & it’s 11% plus) - than lightweight stuff.
      It pains me to say it - but it’s true. However if it’s not 100 Climbs or a CTT course - it’s not a hill.

    • @ironmantooltime
      @ironmantooltime Před 5 lety

      I thought aero is good for over 20k which is why counterintuitively an aero bike works even in the hills... If ur fast.

    • @morosis82
      @morosis82 Před 5 lety

      Yeah, GCN have shown a few times that - depending on your climbing speed - aero bikes are faster even when they're heavier.
      Also, at 28km/h and nearly 90 cadence, there's not a lot of little accelerations like when you're doing 20 and 50-60 cadence. In fact, the slightly higher rotational mass might help in terms of having a bit of inertia when you hit a small bump or so on. I find I feel this sometimes on my 29er over the race bike.
