- We’ve all got a local climb that’s really important to us. It might not be Alpe d’Huez or the Angliru, but that doesn’t matter. Si set out to reclaim his old record on Belmont Hill, just outside of Bristol.

A few years on from his previous personal best, Si was going to need all the help he could get. He set out to see just how fast we could make his already very speedy Canyon Aeroad. For this, we were lucky enough to have the help of our friends at CeramicSpeed, to see how many free watts they could give Si. The bike was heavily modified and Simon chose the fastest possible equipment for his big attempt. Was 550W for over 3 minutes enough for Si to take the record? Watch the full feature to find out!

What's your favourite local hill?
Hoher Hagen, Göttingen, Germany
I live in Florida, all I have is flats 😐
Tracy. She's lovely.
Nell Hill, Hannington. Ahem kom.
My favorite is the street where I live... about 1km of a mere 5% gradient but I struggled at it all my life.
Now I'm finally getting fitter and it feels f-ing amazing to drop people on that climb.
Rumour has it the actual KOM owner did it on a steel frame with a basket on the bars whilst eating an aero Greggs pasty.
😂😂😂😂
With Pink tassels on the grips........ for aerodynamics of course
😂😂
In jeans shorts
I heard he was wearing flip flops
Si : "We all have a climb that is important to us."
Me : "I am living in Denmark mate... "
Me too
I mean you could get just about enough elevation to call it a climb if you rode border to border.
Kollund bakkerne holder her:)
Same 😂 My climb is the local ones around Ejer Baunehøj 😂😂😂
*Laughs in dutch*
GCN and GTN should do a challenge. Best Tri bike at their disposal vs the best UCI legal TT bike up a 3-5% gradient.
A 10 sec improvement over a short hill climb that you've done dozens of times? That's borderline incredible! And all that with less training, older age and higher weight.
JEROME CHANG with -3000€
7% average grade! As a resident of Florida, that might as well be Mt Everest. :)
Didn’t you say losing 1kg woulda saved you the “measly” 2 sec. haha
2sec is literally the only thing keeping me from the kom on this hill by my house. I got my kom taken by an e-bike.
@@steve.o33 you can flag the ride off the e-bike taking your kom back
Flash back to when Si said 1kg will save 2 seconds😂
He could save some weight by removing saddle and seatpost, he rides out of saddle anyway.
lol!!!
Yeah
I know😂!
Doesn't look like he has any weight to lose, honestly
"3 year old bike" I call that NEW
It’s A beautiful feeling isn’t it, the feeling of breathing through a straw? That’s what brings us all back to ride another day. It’s in the suffering. Excellent effort Matey.
I've been riding a bike since I was 6 (am 49 now) For work, school and everything in between. A regular, cheap commuter. I've been teasing my brother (has ridden race biks for a long time) for years, with all his fancy and expensive equipment, saying that he would get more exercise if he rode a crap bike. 2 yrs ago, i bought his old carbon, dura ace bike REAL cheap. And I'm a convert. Riding IS more fun, the faster you go. And shaving 0.5% of a personal best feels amazing :-D EVEN if the equipment is helping!
What were you saying about dropping a kilo?
I do that almost every morning while setting on the toilet. Doesn't really help as I can barely ride that fast on the flat ;-)
Haha, I know... turns out I needed efficiency, aero AND light weight... I’ll just drive next time.
Lose the kilo
I don't think he has anything to drop.
That was probably one of the best GCN videos I've seen for a while (and I love the others). If the sea level pressure was 1.262 kg/m^3 then we're looking at (for example) 10 deg C and 70% humidity (dew point 5C) and 1030mb. Fifteen degrees warmer would save you 7 Watts as would a change of 50mb (down to 980). Combining both of them would give you 0.5km/h more from 28km/h saving you just over 3 seconds. You can do it Si, just come back on a warm day in low pressure, before you get too old. :-)
More Si, and more like this please. Love the learning.
Si great effort, 10 seconds is nothing to be sniffed at. Now take the bike and go get Dan’s KOM. Then document his journey on trying to get it back 😉
"competitive juices' that's one way of calling it, Lance
Awesome stuff. We’ve been curious as to what the result would be. A cool project to be a part of.
We think Si deserves a gift for his PR effort, any suggestions? 🤔 Us Danes make some really good liquorice and schnapps 😎
A side note, all Watt Savings mentioned in this video are relative to Si’s projected power output. Our testing is often conducted at 250w output. At the 250w test output we record a 3 - 5 watt saving on UFO Racing Chains (depending on the chain and group set you ride) and a savings starting at 2.4 watts on the OSPW System ✌🏼
I think Si deserves that new driveshaft drivetrain bike you guys are developing. May THAT will get that KOM back.
A great reward may be a good set of sealed bearings for Si's personal bike -- but heck, first-hand experience for Si to try may that be of the friction-less drivetrain you guys are developing MAY BE an excellent reward -- for Si and every viewer. 😁
Hmmmm...we were only recently discussing who we’d like to be the first rider 🤔😉
Bring that baby like a proud parent out into the world! 😁
I nominate Si and GCN to handle that baby's first ride! 🤘 (though of course, final decision's yours.) For one, I an really interested how that "ninja-like" drivetrain works out on the open road.
ZeroSeriesMMX we’ll be sure to keep you posted along the way. Development continues 👊🏼
10 seconds cost only 3000 euros ....amazing!
This is what a GCN video needs to be; geeky, techy, and something mear mortals could never do. Congrats on a new personal best.
I'm a simple man. I see Si destroying himself, I click like! :)
Epic attempt there, Si! Kudos for breaking your personal record! You smashed it!!
That bike-build montage was so awesome.
This has to be one of my favorite videos that you guys have done. Was great to see a little bit on the inside of personal challenges like this.
Another gem from Simon,,,,always unmissable!
Si's time was 1.06% slower, should've gotten that aero wahoo mount
My solution to the gear promblems would have been to run a 1x chainring on the small chainring position with shorter chainring bolts, drop all spiderless sprockets off the cassette and replace them with lightweight aluminium spacers. this creates a perfect chainline, doesn't cause b-tension problems with the rear derailleur, drops the front one, the small chainring and a lot of weight because the small steel sprockets are much heavier than the ti or al sprockets on spiders.
one of the best videos GCN has made! local KOMs are going down
Brilliant video and a cracking effort Si 🚴♂️💨
Ceramic Speed: founded on the principle of being able to make your boat payment using cash procured from dentists who own bikes.
Come on! This would a nice short video series!
1. Train
2. Optimize helmet, mill down the gears that are unused, remove bottle cages etc
3. Pacing
4. More
Goal: Crush the 3.00!
More: Optimal nutrition
Hard to quanitfy and hard to track effect for such a short climb tho.
1. Train
2. loose the helmet entirely
3. Pacing? Pedal to the metal.
4. Drugs.
The final video of the series would just be Simon shooting enough EPO to make his blood look like maple syrup.
This has been one of my favourite videos you guys have put together.
Wicked! Let us know what you'd like to see more of!
Wow -- great vid, Si! Really fun to watch and to check out your serious geek-out bike mods...well done!
Great video. I've been cycling a year and I judge my progress on a singular climb. Nothing crazy but it's the one I use.
So moving the big ring to the inside would be wrong but using all the small gears as spacers isn't? Si? You feeling okay mate?
haha!
definitely alot of strange logic in this video, never thought zip 808s were hillclimb wheels and a 53t chain ring was for hill climbing either. but what do i know?
@@andrew66769 As they mentioned in the video, a larger chainring means less sliding friction in the bushings. All they did was use a larger chainring + larger cog for the same gear ratio-makes sense.
As for the rims, that's harder to say if the tradeoff between aerodynamics vs weight is worth it in this instance. On the one hand, Simon's average speed was 26.7kph, so aerodynamics is significant. On the other hand, a 7% grade means that weight starts to become quite significant. My intuition would be that a lighter rim would be better in this case.
@@ConsciousBreaks on a 3-minute time window, how significant is all that. they should have just gone with a lightweight fixie setup if they already calculated the best gearing.
@@lyan9923 Si specifically says that he needs to change gears at 9:30. It was recommended to run a 1x, so I'm not sure why he didn't do that.
It could be significant. After all, Si was only 1% slower than the KOM time, so he would probably only need 1-2% more watts-that's only 5-10W-to take the KOM. If we are to believe the claimed numbers in the video, e.g. 5W for not cross-chaining and 4W for larger jockey wheels, then it's actually hugely significant.
You're right that he could have gone full weight-weenie, but it seems like he didn't want to do that for some reason. He could have used a super light saddle, removed the front derailleur, etc. It's kind of inconsistent with the theme of the video, but I guess he wanted to keep a fully-functional, practical road bike?
That was awesome! Well done Si!
Love this kind of stuff. I am a small part of a cycling podcast and this week we talked about what we could do for an Everest attempt along these same lines. Great topic. 👏
Your best video in ages. Loved this.
That was brilliant...thank you.
Glad you liked it!
That's a great vid, right up my street. Without the tech tweaks I got a recent PB on a local climb and was as out of breath as Si at the top, which for me is the meeasure of did I go 100%. Nice effort Si.
Excellent Content. One of my favorite videos thus far, and I'm oddly pleased that technology alone didn't win the KOM.
It’s ok si , you tried your hardest and really worked hard! Just keep trying
Who else misses the Mushroom Helmet that makes Si look like Toad from Super-Mario ?
You know the connotations that such a statement now carries, right?
@@benjaminlewis9981 Trump anyone?
@@benjaminlewis9981 this is more horrible than Si's franken-kassette, thank you
This was awesome! Really enjoyed the geekiness put into practice. I want to see a repeat with specific training but no more training hours!!
Top effort! Seeing you afterwards you obviously gave it all you had. Top effort
I like watching Si’s blank face and the back of his laptop when the expert is talking. So much better than seeing his face. 😂
Sorry but for 2 seconds you’ve gotta try again at some point! ;)
All he needs is a strong tail winds
One of the best videos on this channel! Please make more like this!
Glad you enjoyed it Ian! What would you like to see?
Commiserations on not getting the KOM, but you did make one of the best GCN episodes ever, so well done on that.
No aero helmet or overshoes? Could've been those 2 seconds!
Easily. So annoying to see when these are cheap no-brainera for joe public way way before opening wallets for the final few watts
Aero overshoes got to be worth a few watts right?!
And aero helmet
No -- that's pretty controversial, from what I've seen, although it's been a few years.
What about no helmet. Saves some grams and the head gets smaller.
@@torbisen7781 helmet is more aero, despite the increased frontal area
Love this video weekend warriors at its best! Personal best’s by local riders well done Si!
Loved this, would be an excellent series!
Fascinating video Si. It would be interesting to know the cost of your upgrade, if that's the right term for it. Welcome to the world where you only slide down the Strava leaderboard.
Ah the canyonero (canyon Aero) I loved that episode of the Simpsons
LOL and l have that car in a HOTWHEELS TOO :)
Well this is just great. GO SI!
A great climb this one! Good work Si!
Just checked Strava as I ride around Bristol often - my fastest time up Belmont was twice Simons; 6m02s 😬
Guess I’d better get training
It's a deceptively tough climb!
@@gcn i just did it in 3:05
NW Herbalist doubt it
A true weight weenie would chop the bars too, just ask Ollie.( and use spacers for the unused cassette sprockets)
Deliciously geeky. Touchingly candid. Thanks.
Good job Si! Fun video.
Great video Si -easily the best GCN presenter! I hear the KOM was set by some joker on an E Bike anyway so don’t feel too bad mate 😀
Hi Si,
How about inviting the current KOM to show you how to do it?
Since it wasn’t that steep or long of a climb, did you really have to ride out of saddle? I think you lost there many seconds.
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks Si :-)
Nice video. Thanks for sharing your hill and attempt with us Si.
Maybe a better power-centric pacing would make a bigger difference than all these mods?
Wouldn't riding out of the saddle negate all the aero mods you made to the bike?
Probably yes, but i don't think he could keep the same power seated.
Milan Babic
400-450w?
To nije malo
Daleko da je malo, njemu je cilj bio oko 550 sto je sedeci tesko ostvarivo.
I wonder what watts and how long you could hold standing but being on the drops - like Landa climbs
They were mostly friction mods, not aero.
Really enjoyed the video and it kind of gave me some comfort that some of the people ahead of me on my local hills may have better equipment than legs. Good effort Si, definitely got bike envy even with the frackencasette.
Oh My Froomey!
That is so cool and fantastic! Chapeau to Si.
3 cups of grandmas coffee and u will do in 2:45 min ^^
Legend has it I will get a heart am I right
Brilliant video. The story behind it made it amazing
Well done Si. Great effort and brilliant video.
Wouldn't changing out the tyres have made a diffrence? Conti GP4000SII aren't the fastest ones around nor the lightest.
HugoH go all in with silk track tyres!
Kingscavill
This is why i like this channel. It reminds me of Top Gear.
Terrific performance Si, especially considering most KOMs are achieved with a howling tailwind. 💨 Great effort and a most entertaining video too. 👍🏻
These kind of videos are melting my brain. I don't see the use of cycling like this. It's just another mass consumerism hysteria. You didn't even pretend to train for it. I miss Si with his red specialized with alloy wheels and campy groupset. I miss Matt as well. I am always missing Matt.
fyi czcams.com/video/mnXojWUVFGU/video.html
Rafael de Giacomo Araujo You know that Specialized paid me to ride that bike, right? I was a pro bike rider and that was my old spare bike that I kept into retirement.
I did like the red specialized though.
I have a canyon. I love it. I bought it after I was following GCN and some may say that GCN influenced me in a positive way.
It's not about the bike or sponsoring. It's more about coherence to achieve a goal.
I liked when you used WD40 on your bike. I don't agree with it. But, it helped you achieve your go in a practical and simple way. 2 weeks of 15 min short burst intensity training after your regular rides would have given you the same or better result to achieve your goal. Maybe I am just in a mood.
Anyway, keep on being awesome.
Why don't you speak with your wallet and pay for all of GCN's operational and video production costs so they don't need to do ad videos ever again? Or would you like it if they put all of the videos behind a paywall?
Then watch their old videos
can we get the uncut follow cam footage?
no homo?
Fun video, thanks for doing it.
This was incredible content, team. Great job
Try again! Better pacing could be those 2 seconds! :)
A curry should've given Si some propulsion to get up the hill.
Great effort, great video.
love the documentary style video
Swap out the wheels for light Alu boxsection ones, replace that awful frankencassette with a normal one, and attack that hill x times until you break the record. Your satisfaction will be far greater.
Cha Keeb ha, there’s no way on earth I could get that KOM on a big standard bike unless a hurricane blew in the right direction.
I'm no expert, but I was thinking the same thing as Cha Keeb.... 808s for a hillclimb? The road surface looks rough, but 85psi in your tires? 120psi, your normal 454 wheels, normal cassette, train for a month and try again. Magic dust on the chain isn't getting it done Si!
So length of the road is 1400 meters, your time was about 180 seconds which gives average speed of 28 km/h. At that speed your components do not need to be super aero as speed is too small for high drag to kick in as drag is proportional to speed squared. So there is not need for high deep wheels and deep wheels are also heavier. What you should do is to keep rotating bike components as light as possible, light tires, light inner tube, not much deep wheels, if possible, having only one light front gear which also makes bike lighter as there is no front derailleur, light chain, light pedals, light shoes. Big jockey wheels as light as possible is good choice. Why is light rotating part very important? Because moment of your legs needed to accelerate rotating wheel is proportional to mass times squared radius of that mass. So wheel two times lighter needs moment of your legs on pedals two times smaller. This is specially important at riding in uphill where velocity of your bike is not constant but is full of accelerations. 26 inches wheels may even be better in such circumstances. One inch or so is enough deep in my opinion.
I agree...so does my wife thankfully
Stop the internet, this random guy knows more than the experts that make a living out of actually calculating these things...
I had a go at GCN when they uploaded the bike video - but if it is 28kmh avg - on hills aero can become a bigger gain over 16mph/25kph - (unless your really strong & it’s 11% plus) - than lightweight stuff.
It pains me to say it - but it’s true. However if it’s not 100 Climbs or a CTT course - it’s not a hill.
I thought aero is good for over 20k which is why counterintuitively an aero bike works even in the hills... If ur fast.
Yeah, GCN have shown a few times that - depending on your climbing speed - aero bikes are faster even when they're heavier.
Also, at 28km/h and nearly 90 cadence, there's not a lot of little accelerations like when you're doing 20 and 50-60 cadence. In fact, the slightly higher rotational mass might help in terms of having a bit of inertia when you hit a small bump or so on. I find I feel this sometimes on my 29er over the race bike.
that was really entertaining. please do more of these koms
Am sure there will be a next time!! Great video
Though I got a little lost with all the figures in the middle, this was the best GCN video for ages.
I genuinely called it! I predicted you were going to get a new PR, but would've been about 2-3 seconds off! Still, though, that was such a delight to watch! Well done, Si! :D
Great vid. Well done Si.
Scrabo in Ards Northern Ireland, not huge, just that it represents home and the view from it out over Strangford Lough is breath taking. Always makes me feel so happy I took up cycling.
another video like this please Si!
Thanks for the Ceramic Speed commercial. Okay okay, I normally love GCN stuff, and thank you for the entertainment.
Great vid guy's, really enjoyed it
Love Belmont...not sure I will ever see a sub 6min time though. Your time is nuts! Completely nuts!
I really enjoyed watching it thx si !
Being a geek bicycle rider I loved this episode. Looking forward to apply the same modifications to my bike
Well done you . That’s bloody fantastic and proves age is but a number and yet do the numbers and look at you . Brilliant 🚴♀️ 😎👍
I love this geeky stuff! Thank you.
