  • Now, this will be an interesting game if you're a Cardinals fan: Chris Carpenter before he was Chris Carpenter, when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. But for the Braves, Tom Glavine was, well, Tom Glavine in this TBS telecast, June 28, 1998.

I still miss the uniqueness of Braves and Cubs baseball on the superstations as it felt like extra access to another local team that didn't play in your city. You got a chance to see that one team most games of the season without the need of watching them a few times of year on a nationally television game. Gotta love that Braves TBS theme too, makes you want to cry of the good ole days. This Blue Jays lineup was stacked too, should've been a playoff team and I loved these Blue Jays jerseys, the ones they have now are pure perfection, but I still love these late 90s ones too.

My wife (then fiance) and I were at SkyDome in 1998 when Stieb started, got thru 5 innings, and picked up the only win of his comeback. He battled, oh how he battled. When he finished the fifth, we all knew that he was done for the day. We were so happy that he battled thru five with the lead. A great day.

Chris Carpenter is the one that got away for the Jays. Like Al Leiter a few years earlier the Jays were patient, helped him sort out injury problems and difficulties only to see him bolt. It's a real shame too because a front end of the rotation with Doc and Carp at the apex of their powers would've been amazing to see.

Long-time Blue Jays President Paul Beeston once stated that Al Leiter was the one big disappointment of his tenure. The Jays kept Leiter on the 40-man roster for years, while he nursed various injuries. One year, in fact, Leiter pitched only one game and in another season, he only pitched one inning.
Leiter left Toronto after one decent season. I believe a reason was that his wife was a lawyer who passed the bar in the States. Nevertheless, Beeston felt hosed. In Accounting terms, the money spent on Leiter in Toronto was a sunk-cost.

I loved the Jays' 1998 team: Canseco, Delgado, Green, Clemens, Fernandez, Halladay (rookie), Carpenter, etc. Their division, however, was excruciatingly hard with the Yankees only losing 40 some odd games that year.

Somewhere, there’s a search result for “number of times a five-years-retired 40-year-old American League relief pitcher batted against a Hall of Fame National League starter,” and that number’s probably pretty small.

Do you have the June 27, 1998 Blue Jays-Braves game that Greg Maddux pitched in less than 2 hours?

I was thinking of that game the day before too. I remember Greg Maddux pitching that game in 1 hour 46 minutes with a career high 13 strikeouts.
