Like most people I made the change to a safety razor because of the price of standard cartridge type refills. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. A safety razor when done correctly will give you a much closer shave and a puck of Shaving soap with a shaving brush will last you much longer. Listen to this man. He knows what he's talking about. Your skin and your wallet will thank you

I honed it stripped it and was shaving with it when she saw and gave me the razor to keep. I have a nice collection of wedge razors and DE razors.

An adjustable razor IS perfect for beginners! Start at 1 and work yourself slowly up to 6 with the Futur. You won't need to buy several razors to find the right one. Also, you can adjust an adjustable to the aggressiveness of different blades instead of using different razors on different blades. I started with adjustable and got bbs shaves immediately. Had I bought a non adjustable as a newbie and that razor had happened to be mild giving me a bad shave, I would have given up on safety razors. Get the Merkur futur, newbies. It's amazing.

One bit of wisdom I got from George Bruno, a famous barber instructor, is to use Cremo as a pre-shave cream. Not only does it provide a second layer of protection underneath whatever you put on top whether it is shaving gel or shaving soap, but it also makes for a slick shave and it is easy to reactivate with more water if it dries up while you make your lather. On a bonus side, it's relatively cheap and you don't need a whole lot to put on your face.
Note: I apply Cremo on my first pass and I only do two-pass shaves. I don't think it will linger after you shave it off, but I don't feel the need to add more yet with my setup.

Using safety razors is much cheaper in the long run, it's much better, much less irritating, and much more enjoyable when you lather up with a brush and nice cream. I realise I sound like an advert, but I used to utterly hate shaving until I switched to a safety razor a few months ago. I shall never look back. Wet shaving with a safety razor is a proper art in itself, and coming out of the bathroom clean-shaven and without suffering from severe razor burn is extremely satisfying. I'd recommend a safety razor to anyone.
You also get the perk of not being preached to by modern ideologues...

The whole process of preparing the razor, lathering the cream, performing the pre-shaving/shaving/post-shaving is just bliss... Very nice overview of shaving products. Surprised you didn't describe some of the starter sets you offer for beginners. Perhaps you should offer a starter set with several options. An adjustable safety razor - Rockwell 6C or Parker Variant (since they better suit different shaving skills (and beard growths) than a fixed blade safety razor), a large synthetic brush, Proraso soap or cream, IMUSA salsa bowl (which makes a great, cheap lathering bowl), alum block, and an aftershave (Proraso Green or Osage Rub), balm (Arko or Suavacito), or witch hazel option.
One can make a sufficient lather with a pea-sized amount of soap or cream that is first pressed or distributed in a salsa bowl, before building a lather with a barely damp, synthetic brush. This can keep a soap or croap dry (and less messy). 'Blooming' isn't necessary to make a great lather, as you can make a great lather with flakes from a triple milled soap.

Thanks! In this one I just wanted it to be an overview of all the steps involved in the shaving process. I didn't even mention the names of all the products to keep it within time constraints. Thank you for your wise input though.

i'm looking for help finding the best safety razor to start out with. I tried a straight edge/single edge from "SUPPLY" and it did not work out so well. Chronic razor burn on my neck has plagued me for months and I need a fix for it

Rockwell 6c razor with feather, Astra stainless, shark, or trig blades. I hear persona and kai are very good blades but I have not tried them. I'm working my way through a sample pack of blades, and I found these to be good. My suggestion is to start on plate number 3 and work up especially with the feather- it is very sharp, so in the beginning you may push on the razor which will nick/slice you. Use short strokes and be patient at first. I have used feather blades on plate 4( helps with neck irritation) first and 2nd passes, with the 3rd and 4th passes on plate 3 to minimize the likelihood of cuts. Warning: you may become slightly addicted to shaving :)

I think I was 13 or 14 when my dad bought me a can of Barbasol and some 2-blade disposable razors to scrape off my then cappuccino stain of a mustache. I shaved with disposables for way too long - until I was 26. I was thinking "I'm sick of these things, I need to get a REAL razor" and was looking at cartridge razors when I realized that DE razors were still a thing. I saw the cost per blade and was immediately sold. Bought a Lord L6 (that I still use) and never looked back.
