i love jon’s late night videos because I can watch them right after the game when I’m drunk, then inevitably forget and re-watch them in the morning the day after.
As he talks my memory starts to kick in again and it feels like I knew all Jon’s points anyway and for a brief second I feel like the smartest tactical analyst on earth.

Cucurella was immense. He played as a CB, LB & LM to help free Sterling. Kova did amazing too covering the vacated spaces. Sterling deserves to have the freedom obviously, and I actually think it helped Cucurella and Kova to also shine. I love the new system and the way it allows player’s to play in their more natural position. Now we build on the players confidence. A few games of Kai playing a 9 that drops to a 10 to help create overloads he will be firing. Kai was mostly on the right to allow Sterling 1v1 on the left, which isn’t Reece’s natural game. Another thing that I took particular interest in was that Reece wouldn’t tuck in unless absolutely necessary. I assume to pin them back and/or have a head start to the counter or build up phase. Complete opposite to Tuchel. In fact this was completely different. Tuchel’s system was 3 x CB, 2 x WB, 2 x CDM, 2 x ACM and 1 ST for most games. Potter we see more 1 x CB, 2 x LB/RB, 1 x CDM, 2 x CM, 2 x Wingers, 2 x ST. 1 striker coming to the ball more often then not, while the other ghosts behind at the back post and punches the line. I could go on. Reece was the most important piece to the puzzle to allow Potter to quickly change to a back 4 if needed. Both Mount and Kai could take up the space on the right wing. Having players that can do this makes the opposition manager think twice about changing formation with a sub as they know Potter can counter it, or not.

First time I've been to a live game in ages, because of illness, and I agree with you. Lots of positives. James was superb. Mason Mount didn't stop running and one mistake aside Silva was excellent. Strange team selection. No much pace at the back, but I'm sure there was a reason.

  • @Q9Teen
    @Q9Teen Před rokem +46

Chelsea submitted the formation 4-2-3-1 with Azpi and Silva as pair CB which is very old combination, scary stuff. But yeah they played as back 3 with Cucu.
For me it was an asymmetrical formation where Sterling looks more like an attacking left midfielder and James as a natural right wing back. Cucu as a left CB that also travelling quite high, seems like having 2 LWB.
Some distinct difference between Tuchel and Potter is: 1. Potter was more direct and less build from the back than Tuchel 2. Potter formation looks like having 2 units; defending unit and attacking unit as I saw that Havertz and Auba not dropping too deep and Sterling was more of a attacking unit rather than wingback that does defend & attack, while in Tuchel's everyone is as one unit like Pep once described.
Also in the last 80 after Salzburg scores, I think it's quite disappointing that Chelsea only had 1 attacking pattern; cross into penalty box

on the surface you could say the same problems are still there. bad finishing, the team failed to react to a conceded goal, defensive errors that cost us everything... but tbh we looked much better than in the past 6 months or so. we had salzburg by the balls for 75 minutes. then we fell apart admittedly and it's a shame that thiago of all people made the costly mistake. but then again, the game could and should have been 4-0 by that point. I am hopeful that potter is the right man to solve our problems. if the attackers start scoring consistently it's over, which would be boring and it's not necessarily what I want to see. I like back-and-forth games that are not one-sided. I just wish our players took half of the good chances they are getting. we would win a lot of games by 3-1, 4-2, etc.
while I was very frustrated after the game ended, potter got me excited. hopefully the progress comes soon and hard!

I'll explain. First off I'm not defending the decision, I think Azpi is in decline and lesser played the better. Now having said that, this is Potter's first game and Azpi is not only experienced but also suitable for both full back and a traditional wide center back in back 3. Potter's back 3 requires the wide centre backs to be comfortable hugging the touchline as that is how his team builds up. Cucurella does it pretty well. Most of the general centre backs don't fit that role. Under Tuchel the wide centre backs were narrower so didn't necessarily need that trait. Potter probably saw in Azpi an experienced player who fits that role and also is the captain of the team. So played it safe and started him.
Again, not saying it was right or wrong. Just making logical sense of it. Potter will adapt to the squad as time goes on and vice-versa. But for now it is what it is.

I think 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1 is the best when playing with a back 3..I suggest you chock the midfield and allow the wing backs opportunity to roam..so that you don't get caught out exactly what happened in the game kolibaly or chaloba should have started chiwell should have started thus formation would have forced salzburg to go long which would have made the game easier for Reese James and chillwel and allowed Sterling to roam..I wish Potter would see this message
Conte won the league with this formation
And Tuchel won UCL with this formation
Sterling need to be allowed to have a free role just like in city
It's like this guys have forgotten who he was or you play a 3-4-3
Sterling and cucu are attack minded to play center back and wing back and that was where they were punished

I thought you would mention jorginho and his role. He is the only reason why we are one directional in attack. That is from flanks all the time. J5 should learn the pattern of Andreas pirlo, fabregas in Conte's regime. Stay in pivot , scan before the pass comes. Lay the pass to either Kai or mount who can drive forward from middle.
Most teams has found us out. Just place a man in front of j5. All he does is back pass cos he can't drible nor quickly swarve and pass.

Goals came from defending mistakes by both sides - nothing to do with the coaching. Two good finishes came from these mistakes and the forwards had some unimpeded time to pick out their shot. The issue for Chelsea is 17 shots with only 4 on goal, two of those from Ziyech late in the game. I think Salzburg managed 4 shots with 2-3 of them on target, much better percentages. Thus is Chelsea’s “MO” since Lampard times. So much effort goes into chance creations, and not enough figured out on how to get clear chances and goal conversions.
We shouldn’t read too much into what Potter did for this game - he’s still figuring out what he’s got and how to use them.

Love this channel but definitely wasn’t a back 3 today. Was a back 4-2-3-1 but Reece was told to push up and Cucu stay back during attacking phase. J5 would hold, Kova would push up, and Mount would tuck in a bit but still mainly be wide. Potter was trying to overload numbers on the right side and leave Sterling in 1v1 chances. Issue was Sterling wouldn’t take advantage of it, kept slowing down instead of attacking with speed, only wanted to cut inside when the defender was giving him every chance to beat him down the touchline and get a good cross in. Sterling would be better if he was on the right trying to do that using his change of pace to get cross and cut backs into the box

The starting formation from my initial look was a back 3. With Cucurella playing a hybrid role of being centre back and a fullback, like he did at Brighton on instances. Sterling was the left wing back, rarely tucked in. During build up you could see the wide centre backs (Cucurella and Azpi) in back 3 spreading which is again the same as Potter's Brighton. In Tuchel's system the wider center backs tucked in more, even in buildup. Mid today was a diamond with Jorgi sitting middle, Kova left, Mount right, and Havertz at tip. Again same as Brighton's 3-5-1-1/3-6-1.
I'll watch the game again later to make sure, but I've seen enough Brighton to recognize how Potter intends to shape his team. Sometimes he shifts multiple times in a single game so that can make it confusing for the viewers, with every other person coming with different interpretation. But that is Potter's perk.
