    Stellar. You have to hand it to Blackbeard, both fictionally here played masterfully by Newton and the real McCoy, Edward Teach...curious to know what his biography would read like (who, what he was before turning pirate). I mean, if his portrayal herein was any indication, just imagine the treachery he conjured n imposed on the high seas in terms of history. Mr. Teach, his duplicity, no doubt rendered him bogeyman in many a children's bedtime story and parental cautionings... Signed, Arrrr

    Arrr! A fun show, with Newton playing his role for laughs and Darnell as drop-dead gorgeous as always. I'm only 40 minutes into it so I don't know what liberties the movie may take with history but so far it's reasonably accurate: The privateering trade is over so the buccaneers are turning to outright piracy and Morgan is in trouble and about to face the music in England - it will cost him most of his Panama loot to buy his life and get in the King's good graces. I think it's inaccurate at this point that they're already calling him Sir Henry but hey, it's Hollywood and that's only a minor deviation from history.
    Blackbeard preferred psychology to violence and adopted a lot of fearsome theatrics to intimidate his opponents. It makes him a really colorful character and I think the movies have yet to take full advantage of his entertainment potential.
    Edit: Watched it all and sure enough it eventually went off the rails historically. Teach wasn't killed in the Caribbean, that happened years later in North Carolina. And he died fighting not buried and drowned.

    • @Blokewood3
      @Blokewood3 Před rokem +1

      Henry Morgan and Blackbeard weren't really contemporaries of each other. Morgan died in 1688, at which time Teach would have been a little boy. Blackbeard died in November of 1718 off the Carolinas in a fierce battle against pirate hunters. The man who brought down Blackbeard was named Maynard, but he wasn't a doctor, and he hadn't met Blackbeard before.

    "What be your name, girl?"
    "Blackbeard!"
    "No, I be Blackbeard."
    This exchange was really funny when I first saw this film on TV.

    William Bendix ("Ben") was a bat boy for the NY Yankees at 15 years old; he and Babe Ruth were pals. He was fired for sneaking 15 hot dogs to Babe before a game, who developed gastritis and couldn't play; the Yankees lost that day. After Bendix became famous as an actor, he played Babe Ruth in the biographical film The Babe Ruth Story.

    Looks like this movie was written for Alan Ladd. Did he turn down the Part? Many of the people in the film have worked with Ladd before.

      Different times. Two different actors. Always said Newton was the greatest film pirate, but Depp's Jack Sparrow is perfect for the time.
