You know what I don’t like? That people give Melo too much of a pass in NYC because Knicks didn’t put that good of a team around him but nobody talks about how Melo could’ve left in 2014 which would’ve been great for both the Knicks and Carmelo Anthony.
In 2014, Melo was still a 25 PPG scorer, could’ve went to the Bulls, Clippers or Rockets to compete while Knicks would’ve tanked during a time where the draft was in their favor.

Melo isn't a winner. He's a ball hog. Most overrated scorer in nba history in my humble opinion. Maybe if Melo played a lick of defence, he'd be a decent role player but even then he'll just hog the ball and not help the team win. Don't get me wrong, Melo is entertaining to watch but he isnt a winner.

Yep, he is in the same category as Westbrook and Harden when I look at players: entertainer.
Entertainers like Westbrook, Harden, and Anthony are just fun to watch. They almost always have their foot on the gas in the regular season or any game they play. When they are on the court, you expect long range shots to splash or empty triple-doubles or just stylish play. There's nothing wrong with that, and they earn their money because I love watching them (except Harden flops).
Contenders though are where you give your highest respect. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Tim Duncan, Steph Curry, and other who are decorated with rings and immense playoff successes.
The NBA needs entertainers and contenders all the same, but the resume reflects so differently when the shoes are hung up.

I'd rather have him scoring 20ppg on layups and wide open 3's than 30ppg on shooting an insane amount of tough shots and poor efficiency.

He might still be able to help a team that needs a scoring punch off the bench. However, I do agree that hes prolly the biggest underachiever. He had a chance to simply wait and sign with the knicks, instead of making forcing a trade resulting in a gutted team. He also could have taken a pay cut (but still get paid near max) to play with the bulls, but chose the money. I cant blame him for choosing money but I can blame him for the game of leverage he played with the bulls making all us bulls fans believed he was actually considering signing with the team. Your point is true mainly for NBA team(s) that lack in three-point shooting. The main reason Carmelo Anthony is still relevant is that he changed his game to focus on being a catch-and-shoot 3-baller.
The Los Angeles Lakers clearly are trying to address that with attempts to acquire Kyrie Irving, Seth Curry, Joe Harris, Buddy Hield or even Bojan Bogdanovic who range from good to great from beyond the arc. Even if the Lakers strike out on all of those guys, they have a young knock-down long-range shooter in Cole Swider on a two-way contract.

It’s wild to think his defense, leadership and passing never evolved to the point it should have with some many of his piers developing that part of their game to win rings and the legends before doing that as provable evidence of what it takes to win rings. Jordan did it, bird was great as a team defender, Jerry west was a great defender and passer, he saw his mentor Kobe do it, his friends wade, lebron, durant did it, curry did it, jordan did it and maybe only magic never got to that point of defense but as a leader, passer, clutch performer in the playoffs plus that laker market and stacked teams was enough to make up for it. Just sad to look at, he never become the multi faceted player he could have been. He had great athleticism too! Maybe not great lateral quickness but great strength, height, speed, wingspan etc he had good to really good handles at least enough to make better passes…
