*{Here are 2 “frugal friendly” chalk suggestions that might be helpful.}*
•~1~• If you aren’t concerned with it specifically being *food grade,* I buy my chalk from construction/contractor supply companies!
They use chalk for *snap-line* marking and it’s typically called either *”marking chalk, or line chalk”.*
It comes in a variety of highly pigmented colors, but I’m boring and only ever use white.😆 So I buy a 5lb bottle (oh yeah! they also usually have a VERY handy pour spout cap!)-for about $7-$10.
•~2~• If you want/need to be REALLY frugal….save all of your eggshells.
A really fun activity I frequently do with my nieces/nephews, is making chalk out of eggshells (since eggshells are about 95% calcium carbonate).
Whenever I use eggs, I will wash/dry the shells thoroughly and toss them into a ziplock bag (side note, crunching them in the bag is REALLY satisfying-like popping bubble wrap 🤣), until they come visit.
Ok, I don’t know if this next step is needed, it’s just something I’ve always done to “prep” the eggs the day before making chalk…
I spread the crunched shell bits onto a baking tray and toss them outside into my little solar oven for the day, to ensure they’re dry and sanitized.
Next up, throw the shell bits into a coffee grinder, (i keep one that is designated for crafting only and you can usually get them from thrift stores for a couple bucks)- after turning the shells into as fine of a powder as we can, we sift it into a bowl (if you’re making this for chalk paint, this is the point you’d stop at).
But if you’re wanting to do sidewalk chalk…I’m too lazy to measure anything, but if you’re interested in doing this, I’m sure you can easily find some precise recipes online!💗
As a chalk “binder” we make a paste out of flour and really hot water (I’d say roughly equal amounts of each) to that we add roughly 2X the amount of eggshell powder (2X the amount of flour in the paste)-and some food coloring.
Mix everything completely and then squish it into whatever molds you want (or) simply roll it into the size of chalk sticks you want (because it’s roughly the consistency of play-doh).
Let fully dry- and then go HAVE FUN!

Well I'm super impressed as I live in Canada and a small can of chalk paint is $45!!! I just cannot afford to spend that kind of money so right now I'm doing the biggest happy dance. Lol As I sit and watch everyone using chalk paint I grow green with envy and silently cuss the fact that it costs such an outrageous price. Hi Holly, I wanted to give you my current chalk paint recipe. I’ve tried baking soda, corn starch, baby powder, etc and I just didn’t get the smoothness and opaqueness I was looking for. So, I’ve been taking clays for years to help cleanse my immune system and purge any heavy metals that may have accumulated over time and I got to thinking one day that maybe I should try incorporating some of these not-so-commonly heard of clays into my paints. I found that Bentonite Clay is the absolute best to create the perfect chalk paint. Other options are Diatomaceous Earth and Zeolite (finely ground), both food grade, as always, and with zeolite you’ll find that it gives your paint an earthy tone that regular paint can’t deliver. The last time I made a perfect batch I noted it immediately so I wouldn’t forget! My radio of paint to bentonite clay is about 60/40, but more or less can be added based on your ideal opaqueness. The paint I last used was a basic Rustoleum house paint (aged gray) with a smooth pebble finish, and while I did had a little bit of acrylic paint to get the color I wanted, I rely mostly on acrylic ink to get my final shade. That way I’m not always fighting the clay to paint ratio and I still choose to use my inks to get my desired color. I used this method yesterday and I am so pleased with the results of my vase and I wish you could see it! Bentonite is also called Aztec Healing clay and you can find it pretty easily on Amazon, but I recently also found it at TJ Maxx as well. I was really surprised and I picked some up while I was there. I hope this suggestion serves you in some way or at least brings about new ideas. Thanks 😊

I used to use bentonite clay aka Aztec beauty clay for my facials (mixed with white vinegar) years ago. Never would’ve thought to try it for Chalk Paint. I actually have some Zeolite n might try it. Thanks for sharing!

I found some in CVS, a few months ago, and, I know, they still have it in mine. It is a big container of talc baby powder, in their Dollar aisle. It is an off brand, but does work just as well. It was only a dollar. I was shocked, because I haven't seen it anywhere else.
I made some chalk paint using talc and white latex paint and used it on some glass candle holders. They came out great, so now
I'd like to paint a cherry wood cafe table set, but I'm kinda waiting to see if anyone else has had success using this recipe. So far, I haven't found any videos or articles using talc.
The calcium carbonate bag you show in the video (brown bag) is available on Amazon, they even sell it in small quantities, when you read down further in the description it gives a recipe for chalk paint, lol

I tried Holly's recipe for chalk paint and I must say that I am impressed with the results!!!! I used this recipe for some ornaments that I am making and it goes on smooth and dried flat, no shine. It dried quickly using a hair dryer with no cracking!!! My ornaments are a shiny plastic from DT and I was afraid it wouldn't stick very well. No worries here! It adhered wonderfully and dried hard. I will have to definitely do two coats of paint but that's because I want a more balanced look over all. I used one part talc to two parts paint and I highly recommend it!!! I would upload a video but I couldn't figure out how lol. But if you're on the fence about trying this recipe, let me put your fears to rest. It WORKS!!!! Hi Holly, thank you for the video. I've been making my own chalk paint for about a year now and using calcium carbonate and you need barely get it wet like when you are mixing corn starch to make gravy, then mix that in with the paint. That way your paint doesn't get watered down and you have a nice creamy bright color that gives you good coverage. It took lots of trial and error to figure it out lol 😂. Love your tutorials. Hey, Lady! Thank you for such a great video. 35 years ago, as a professional make-up artist, I learned about making pancake make-up. Take a look at the ingredients that Westmore used to make the first pancake make-up. They needed something that would not melt under the hot studio lights. In checking his formula, it amazed me that he just took a paint formula and made it into the make-up of the Golden Hollywood era. His product created the velvet complexions on screen. So, chalk paint also does that, cause it is the same ingredients. So, the comment of "painting your face" actually fit what he was doing. He used a solid pigment that he dispersed into a liquid medium and added his talc, too. He would apply the foundation to the starlet, let it dry, and buff it. The buffing took away anything that would appear scratchy on film. Their complexions had to be perfectly smooth, like when gesso is put on a canvas. I think you can see where I am going here. So, sanding your chalk paint is the same as when Westmore would "buff" his clients foundation. It was activated with water and would dry on the actresses, not like a mud mask, but they felt it's tightening power. So many of the actresses would swipe the foundation from him for their own use. It led him to start producing it in larger quantities and the rest is history. I will use the calcium carbonate to make my paint. I have some awfully beautiful mineral pigments that I want to turn into paint. I'll "buff" with the lightest sandpaper, mimicking what Westmore did to complexions and make my paint so smooth. This is fun. Thank you for posting your experiments.

You can also get calcium carbonate at a pool supply store. Or if don't want to do that or get you some baking soda and put it on a baking sheet then put it in the oven at 400 degrees for an hour. That will make the baking soda into calcium carbonate. I learned this while researching for soda ash for my tie dyeing. Love your videos and projects.

Per cooksillustrated dot com, the cooked baking soda gives you SODIUM carbonate, aka washing soda. "Just empty a box of baking soda into a 13 by 9-inch glass baking dish and bake it in a 300-degree oven for 90 minutes, stirring halfway through baking. The baking soda will release water and carbon dioxide, leaving pure sodium carbonate..."

I’m finally watching round two of the chalk paint recipes and I just knew you were going to use n love the calcium carbonate cuz I did too! 😊 But I still loved using the talcum powder IF it’s even still available anymore. (Haven’t looked) We didn’t have to add water and it made the paint have such a nice smell too. But it was perfect with very little effort! So I tried the calcium carbonate after the talcum powder just to see if I liked it n I too found it made my chalk paint watery by following their directions. Next batch I’ll be following yours n I’m certain it’ll be thicker. Even with it thin it’s still a great chalk paint. I want to thank you SO much for doing these cool experiments n sharing the results with us! It’s sincerely appreciated❣️😊💜💜💜
My pleasure and I miss the talc too! When that was in the dollar stores that was in fact the cheapest, best non toxic chalk paint ever. Someone said they found some baby powder in Dollar Tree the other day that was talc, so I guess we could keep checking. I don't know why they just didn't put a disclaimer on the talc "not for use on your private areas" so they aren't liable anymore. I hate cornstarch. It feels scratchy to me, so I now use rice starch or arrowroot powder and put it in a homemade shaker. Healthier than GMO cornstarch anyways I guess.

So happy to have found you. I made chalk paint using plaster of Paris and it turned solid rock with in a day. So that got binned. Wasted a cup of quality coloured paint. I’m off to try the talc ( coz I have some locked away) and then find some calcium carbonate . Great tutorial

I did a whole set of furniture with homemade chalk paint made with C. C. Over a year ago and sealed with clear wax and its still looking amazing defo recommend this but i still use your receipe with talc and luv it... Thanku holly godbless xx

Unfortunately, since the cancer lawsuits, the price for baby powder talc has gone through the roof. I don’t know why they didn’t just put a disclaimer on the bottles to tell people not to use it on their private parts! If we got rid of everything that was carcinogenic people won’t be allowed to use sandpaper anymore because sawdust causes cancer! Frustrating! 🤪 While talc BP is available in the rest of the world, (and so my video will stay up to help those people) USA in Canadian residents needed more suggestions. Calcium carbonate per ounce now costs the same as the baby powder bottle I bought in 2005, so still way cheaper than buying Waverly chalk paint! Happy crafting my sweet friend! ❤️

I bought a big jar of Apple Barrel White matte paint and I couldn't help but notice when it dries it's kind of similar to chalk paint. It's very thick and it has that chalky finish at least for me.
So many of the acrylic paints are now competing with the chalk paint companies. CraftSmart paint in particular, looks exactly like chalk paint when it dries. Most of the ultra matte latex pants look like chalk paint now too. Again, I think it has a lot to do with the name. It’s a cool name. 😎People want to buy it and say it, lol. In my opinion, the rice powder did the best BECAUSE the color didn’t change like it did with the other two. The calcium and Kaolin lightened the color.

Thank you! If it’s any consolation, the calcium carbonate per ounce now comes in at the same price of the cheap baby powder with talc that I bought many years ago, and it certainly comes in a close second to talc’s performance. ❤️👍🏼🤗

Canadians can find baby powder..talc..at the Dollarama..I just bought some.
I imagine it won't be there for long. These are the stocks they are trying to get rid of. Johnson & Johnson stopped putting talc in theirs to avoid anymore lawsuits (although GMO corn starch will probably usher in some cancer suits imo). Once the leading company stops, the little guys tend to follow, because they definitely cannot afford to payout big settlements. I would stock up if I were you! xox

Stain will actually side off of paint if ur trying to coat the paint for shine etc. I'm glad I read the directions. But the slide factor should be fantastic...haven't watched the whole video yet. and thank you for your inspirations!!!!!!!

I was wondering if you had any secrets on how to make your own metallic paints? I like to use them in a dry brush method as a highlight in different projects. And...like most people, who do crafts, it seems you just never have what color you need, when you need it. So, if I could find out what products to keep around to make it on the fly would be great. In closing, thanks for all the great videos. I can’t tell you how many times I go back and pull one up for random projects. Part of the fun of doing crafts for me is...I enjoy making the products themselves that I use, such as your clay recipe.
I don’t know what they use in paints, but in the makeup industry they turn to minerals like mica for frost. I’m guessing it would be the same, although I seem to recall reading something about a man-made version that gave more iridescence and shimmer.

Not where I live unfortunately. People in the USA are having trouble because Johnson and Johnson and all of the baby powder companies are slowly going to remove talc or have done so already. I’m so glad you can still find it! ❤️

This is great. Thank you. I did find some baby powder with talc...at an estate sale, so keep your eyes out there if still looking for talc for your paints. You know we older ladies have a tendency to keep it in case we need it!! Lol
Yeah they stopped selling it since the whole cancer thing came out which by the way came out in the 80s one time and then they never mentioned it again until recently. But I did manage to find baby powder with talc on eBay. It's still out there it's just hard to find
It’s out there, but it’s not cheap anymore for USA and Canadian residents, and that was the entire purpose I made that first vid. Sigh. Now the calcium carbonate is actually cheaper. Per ounce it comes in at the same price I paid for the Walmart baby powder which was talc back in the day. I don’t know why Johnson’s and Johnson’s didn’t just put a disclaimer on their bottles telling people not to use it on their private parts! They are supplying it for the rest of the world, and the USA and Canada are being punished. Sawdust causes cancer! Think about all of the things that cause cancer and have disclaimers on bottles that are sold to us. So irritating! 😂😂❤️

Yes, ask around your friends, family and neighbors. Some shower to shower powder also has talc. Your favorite pack rat probably has some, especially the little travel sizes. I used to keep them in the bag for dance shoes, put a bit on the soles to slide on floor better, BUT NOT THE HEELS. Don't want any injuries from falls, please.

Yes folks have used a acid and the supplement. I actually used a small spice jar size container sold in the art supply store sold as powders pigment. It was calcium carbonate. Not cheap but served well to get my project started while I waited for my cc in he mail.

This video was made for the many USA and Canadian residents that are unable to find talc. These are the acceptable substitutions that work very well. Unfortunately, since the cancer lawsuits, the price for baby powder talc has gone through the roof. I don’t know why they didn’t just put a disclaimer on the bottles to tell people not to use it on their private parts! If we got rid of everything that was carcinogenic people won’t be allowed to use sandpaper anymore because sawdust causes cancer! Frustrating! 🤪 While talc BP is available in the rest of the world, (and so my video will stay up to help those people) USA in Canadian residents needed more suggestions. Calcium carbonate per ounce now costs the same as the baby powder bottle I bought in 2005, so still way cheaper than buying Waverly chalk paint! Happy crafting my sweet friend! ❤️
There's an artist on TikTok who said adding cornstarch to any acrylic paint will immediately improve the quality and opaqueness of the paint. It really works with any brand.
I found it gets very sticky and doesn't glide very well, but I think a bit would work, and rice starch is way better than corn. Thank you for leaving a tip tho! So sweet! xxx
