there was something wrong with Castle's original idea, "what if Captain Hook survived?" J.M Barrie did write a sequel, where we learned Hook was indeed still alive. In the original, Hook was swallowed whole by the Tick-Tock Croc. Now, most people probably remember the Disney version more. Hook tried to kill Peter with a bomb, but Tinkerbell got it away just in time. In the novel & play, he poisons Peter's "medicine", and Tinkerbell -- unable to convince him not to drink it -- downs the whole glass herself. This is when Peter breaks the fourth wall and begs the audience/reader to clap if they believe in faeries, in order to save her life. In the sequel, it's explained that Hook still had a vial of the poison inside his coat when the Croc swallowed him. The vial burst, poisoning the Croc, and Hook was able to cut his way out of it's stomach

Hook is one of my favorites! It brought back a lost memory that Peter Pan was one of my favorite books as a child. One of the reasons the action figure of Peter looked nothing like Robin Williams is from a long standing clause in his contracts that his likeness would not be used to sell merchandise. When he was invited to be in the Terry Gilliam Baron Munchausen movie as King of the Moon, his agent allowed him with the stipulation that Gilliam not “pimp his ass”-that is, don’t use Robin to sell the film. That is why you do not see his name in the credits, on any merchandise and not in the movie posters. You’ll see in the merchandise from Hook that there are no images of Peter Pan that look anything like Robin. Also, if you look closely, Dustin Hoffman visage also does not show up much in the merchandise as well. One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Captain Hook and Smee are discussing why they did not kill Peter when they first had him. It’s a lunatic scene played for laughs and I think it is one of the best parts of the film. Dustin Hoffman and Bob Hoskins were having trouble trying to figure out how to play the scene. They decided to act as if they were two old drag queens having a lovers’ quarrel. It worked beautifully!

With Michael Jackson as Peter? That wouldn't have aged well. Plus nobody would have believed that Jackson would have ever wanted to leave all of those boys behind.
...I've read about that going down much differently. In that Jackson heard about the production, reached out to Spielberg on his own, begging to be cast, and Spielberg being like, "yeaaaaaah.......no.....sorry."
Saw this as a kid and is one of my all time favorites, watching it again from time to time and each viewing it still remains magical. Result of the cinematic genius of Spielberg.

20ish percent on rotton tomatos?! Thats criminal!!!! This movie is wonderful. It's full of action, adventure , thrills, chills, comedie and even romantic. I mean come on this is one of those movies that gets you inspired and felling good about life.
I actually really like how it's easy to tell that Neverland is shot mostly on sound-stages. The "theme-park attraction" vibe I get from it, lends to the idea that Neverland isn't exactly "real" but is more-or-less a fantasy dreamed up by a child. I feel like - even though the events of the movie really do happen - it works with the narrative that Neverland itself is artificial because it's more-or-less meant to be "an escape" sort of. There's also a sub-narrative about fatherhood in this movie that is really interesting; the subplot with Hook trying to turn Jack against Peter is meant to be metaphorical for a Stepparent trying to alienate the Biological Parent and keep them out of the relationship. Hook does this by effectively "buying" Jack's affection, and manipulating the situation to earn his trust - in the movie he allows Jack to vent his frustrations with his father against the clocks, and not only returns his stolen baseball to him but also creates a baseball game where Jack is set-up to be the Team Hero. In the novelization, Hook goes out of his way to shower Jack with all sorts of gifts, childhood wants and fatherly attention. For example, even sets up a kind of carnival ride in the pirates village that simulates a boat-ride. He lets Jack eat all the ice-cream he can handle. All of this was meant to endear Hook to Jack rather than his own father - coupled with the fact that Neverland makes children forget their old lives. It's an interesting struggle for Peter to overcome, as it could represent the realworld situations that some fathers can find themselves in - those who devoted too much time to work, and not enough to their kids, could find their kids forever beyond their reach. Another interesting tidbit about the Novelization, is that during the final duel with Hook, Peter temporarily breaks the action, slips into the local bar and invites Hook to have a drink with him. It's a weird moment of quiet solidarity between the two old rivals, that shows how much older Pan now is, and Hook effectively can treat him like a man. It gets a brief glimpse into Hook's motivations; that the two of them have done this for so long, that he just wants it to come to an end; one way or another, he wants closure - even if he loses the fight.
Not even sort of, but exactly. Neverland is the very representation of a child's own little fantasy world, just like Fantasia in the Never-ending Story.
I love how even when you talk about a film I know really well and I think "I don't think he can come up with something I don't already know" you always do. It is an absolute testament to the level of research you go into for these videos on a regular basis, and you really should be proud of the content you put out. Just saying. :)
Bang arang Rufio. It does ge cheesy at times but honestly best shot at a remake live action Peter Pan movie and it does feel like a honest sequel to the original story. The Neverland score in the movie is just beautiful. I dont know why but it always brings tears when I hear it when I'm watch the scene when Peter becomes Pan again remembering who he is flying around
Loved this movie growing up, and even as a kid I thought the reviews were too cynical. It's not perfect but it makes the right impact. Also, there was a Peter Pan this year? What an impression it made, I didn't even know it existed.
Memories!!!!! I remember my mother renting this for me when I was 9. My name babysat me and ate so many sweets after the film I ran around the house crowing hyped up on sugar. Another quality post Minty. You never fail to entertain my fragile little mind.
When you mentioned videogames, you forgot to mention the arcade game which was an awesome 4-player beat 'em up and is considered one of the best movie tie-in games ever made
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were considered for the role of Peter Pan. Linda Hamilton and Carrie Fisher were considered for Tinker Bell. David Bowie was the original choice for Hook but turned it down
First of all, I *love* your videos; they just really make my day, especially the kids 80s/90s movies. Hook especially is a long-time favorite. I would say that I used to daydream about flying away to Neverland, but i still secretly wish that lol.
Really appreciate how you mention movie related video games when available for each of your reviews - really rounds it out and anyone interested in your retro reviews were naturally kids at the time!
I love this movie and I also had the toys, my favorite being Rufio. I also have the HOOK games but for NES, SNES, and Genesis and I believe there is one other. Awesome video Minty, I'm going to go home and watch this underrated film.
BANGARAAAAAANG!!! Oh boy, i still remember the time when this movie came out. It felt like suuuuuch a huge mega-scale project and it pretty much burned the name "Steven Spielberg" into my mind forever. It was also the first time i ever saw a making off on TV while the movie was just about to be released. Never saw that before, video recordings from the shooting and i always wondered if the camera crews would be visible in the film. Oh the joys of being just a 6 year old boy.

Can we get make up in here for Mr Jackson he keeps sweating off his makeup. 2 days later Spielberg: Yeah get me casting department we need new kids these ones keep crying all the time!
One thing with Robin Williams was that he was very particular about how his image and voice were used. This was part of his dust-up with Disney over The Genie in Aladdin. That's probably one of the reasons that the action figure of Peter Pan doesn't look like Robin Williams in the movie.
I think the movie goes deeper than having innocence in your older ages. Though that is one way of seeing it, perhaps it could even be the struggle to find that innocence that you know you're missing once you become aware of it. We see that in Peter's eyes when he sees his son Jack playing baseball in Neverland with the pirates. He walks away from it melancholic realizing he really did forget an important part of himself and he saw it in his son at the game. Peter and the audience see Hook encouraging Jack at the game, by which Peter starts to have the realization dawn on him.
There were Hook video games for just about every platform. I had the one for NES, and I rented the one for Genesis once. SNES also had one as you mentioned, and I think there might have been one for Game Boy. They all played differently.

hook to this day is one of my favorite childhood movies... i still love watching this movie and the scene when peter finally learns how to fly again and the music starts kicking up it still gives me goosebumps and just makes me happy lol it was and still is a great movie
With Michael Jackson as Peter? That wouldn't have aged well. Plus nobody would have believed that Jackson would have ever wanted to leave all of those boys behind.
😂😂😂😂
Green Man ..he..he..heeeee!
...I've read about that going down much differently. In that Jackson heard about the production, reached out to Spielberg on his own, begging to be cast, and Spielberg being like, "yeaaaaaah.......no.....sorry."
Eewww! That's just naaastyyy
Lol that was my thought. Even if it did well on release nobody could rewatch it later without that creepy factor.
One of my favorite movies, and absolutely my favorite movie soundtrack. Still gives me chills after all these years
10 things you didn't know about young FRANKENSTEIN
The blooper reels are excellent.
Even more relevant, with the passing of Cloris Leachman
Saw this as a kid and is one of my all time favorites, watching it again from time to time and each viewing it still remains magical. Result of the cinematic genius of Spielberg.
Bangerang! This is my absolute favorite movie! Thank you for covering this timeless classic!
The fact that Glenn Close was in this movie always make me laugh! She's so unrecognizable! XD
Minty, you are the man! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I still managed to learn something new from your video. I actually still have my action figures from this movie when I was a kid. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos, I look forward to watching them every time I see a new upload. Keep them coming bro!
Every time I see Hook now, only one thing comes to mind...
“Hello! Zuko here!”
...admit it, I’m not the only one!
My dad unexpectedly passed away very suddenly and he was my best friend and mentor. Then my 2 best friends passed away just weeks later. Point is Your videos have been helping me threw this very tough time🙏 much love and respect from the high Mountains in Northern Arizona U.S.
I am truely sorry, you keep being strong.
20ish percent on rotton tomatos?! Thats criminal!!!! This movie is wonderful. It's full of action, adventure , thrills, chills, comedie and even romantic. I mean come on this is one of those movies that gets you inspired and felling good about life.
#FACTS
Loved this movie when I was a kid in Grade 1, the cast and crew did a fantastic job, RIP Robin Williams and Bob Hoskins you both are greatly missed.
VHS was our best friend, lol. Minty you finally said something funny!
I was never much of a Robin Williams fan but I did enjoy Hook. I loved the line where the old man says, "I've lost my marbles!"
Yeah that got me too
I saw this so many times in theaters
You lucky devil!
I love how even when you talk about a film I know really well and I think "I don't think he can come up with something I don't already know" you always do. It is an absolute testament to the level of research you go into for these videos on a regular basis, and you really should be proud of the content you put out.
Just saying. :)
I think one of the best things about your videos is how articulate you are. It's like reliving those glorious childhood moments in these movies.
I loved this movie. "You've found my marbles!!!"
Actually it was " I didn't lose my marbles after all".
**cue the stirring, emotional soundtrack**
I can definitely see the late David Bowie playing Captain Hook.
No way
A childhood classic and one of my favorite Robin Williams movies. Great review!
Its so nice to find a channel that does this with movies I enjoy. You pick the best ones mate and they never disappoint.
Fun fact, the actor who played Peter's son is now a lawyer/college instructor in the Greater Cleveland area.
@Jscottmoody Why? Some people prefer to live a normal life over one filled with glitz and glamor.
The poster of Hook and Indiana Jones looking similar; it's just you! lmao
This movie defined my childhood and shape my adulthood.
Everytime people ask me what my top three movies are, Hook is always #1.
Bang arang Rufio. It does ge cheesy at times but honestly best shot at a remake live action Peter Pan movie and it does feel like a honest sequel to the original story. The Neverland score in the movie is just beautiful.
I dont know why but it always brings tears when I hear it when I'm watch the scene when Peter becomes Pan again remembering who he is flying around
this movie is so good
Loved this movie growing up, and even as a kid I thought the reviews were too cynical.
Absolutely love this movie one of my all-time favorites keep up the videos always enjoy them minty!
Bangarang
thanks for this almost lost my marbles.
They just left Rufio dead on Hook's ship..
Another great informative video about one of my favorite movies. Thank you
When you mentioned videogames, you forgot to mention the arcade game which was an awesome 4-player beat 'em up and is considered one of the best movie tie-in games ever made
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were considered for the role of Peter Pan. Linda Hamilton and Carrie Fisher were considered for Tinker Bell. David Bowie was the original choice for Hook but turned it down
David Bowie refused the Zorrin bad guy role in 1985, A View To A Kill 007 film. 🎬🎥🇬🇧💰... that part went to actor Christopher Walken.
Thank you Minty. Can you do one on The Sandlot?
Goonies. Has to be one on the goonies.
🏄10 things you didn't know about Surf Ninjas
I'm sure Rob Schneider would just love that review. Ha, it's his least favorite film. ^_^
What if Rob Schneider liked that movie?
Yesssssss!! One of my favorites growing up!
I don’t know anything about surf ninjas
How about 10 Things you didn't know about "Surf Nazis must die" ?
thanks for this minty, one of my fav movies ever but one of the very very few i know little about....not anymore!
Michael Jackson as peter pan well that would have been a liability nightmare for the studio
Ha, Jeffrey Epstein couldn't agree more.
And for the children he wouldn't keep his hands off of them.
@@fallenwolf3368 Spielberg: Cut uh...Mike we keep picking up heavy breathing on your mic...
10 min later...
Spielberg: Cut! Can we get make up in here for Mr Jackson he keeps sweating off his makeup.
2 days later
Spielberg: Yeah get me casting department we need new kids these ones keep crying all the time!

@@thealjohnsonshow2188 what we are supposed to pretend like it never happened?
Just love your videos. Well I love movies so your the cherry on the top !!
There were Hook video games for just about every platform. I had the one for NES, and I rented the one for Genesis once. SNES also had one as you mentioned, and I think there might have been one for Game Boy. They all played differently.
I loved hook, played my VHS till it broke
Thanks for the wonderful memories rest in peace Mr.Williams
favorite channel on youtube thank you mr Bishop
You missed most of the cast nicknaming Roberts “Tinkerhell” due to her daily diva meltdowns.
+Djarra
Seriously?
@@thealjohnsonshow2188 Yep, apparently she was a nightmare on set.
That doesn’t surprise me. I thought she was miscast and brought nothing to the movie.
I love Robin Williams but this role is by far my favorite.
One of my favorite movies growing up! I love Robin,Dustin... amazing cast.💙
I watched Hook right after learning of Williams passing. It is one of my favorites of his.
