Well yea, they are, per the definition of the English language. A puppet require a puppeteer, that's is indeed the distinction, so you are accurate in this assessment.
They have down sides and upsides. The puppet Is easier to make but not the best at showing expressions sometimes while animatronics have good movements and expressions but take a while
I was thinking that too! That and the coins, which, it's a fairly simple bit of engineering by comparison, but they look like you could go and just collect them!

Jinouga is called Zinogre in English, in case anyone here plays Monster Hunter but didn't know that and had no idea what they were referring to. It's my all time favorite monster and I've been dying to see the animatronic for it up close.
There was a Cosworth animatronic for the launch of fallout 4, I believe it had 2 settings one where it would be pre programmed and would move and talk on its own in a loop and a version where the voice actor could control it like a puppet and have live interactions with guests.
And there's also a user (I only know their tiktok: @dl_electronics_and_mechs) that made several animatronics from many different games Examples would be Scrap baby, funtime freddy, funtime foxy, freddy, chica and even fredbear All of them include voice lines from the game and some even can sing I think their work is absolutely impressive

Five nights at Freddy’s is a horror game that seems real. Scott just didn’t wanna make real animatronics about it. 4/6 of the games are in a pizzeria setting with killer animatronics. Well, they’re actually just children’s souls looking for revenge after William killed them. What I mean by 4/6 are in pizzerias, I’m saying up to pizzeria simulator. The 2 that aren’t are FNaF 4 (in a house), and FNaF 5 (Sister Location).
Sister is in a pizzeria if I remember correctly. Its just closed most of the time and is only opened during a reserved birthday. Fnaf 3 takes place in a Halloween attraction. So you're half right.

These are mostly puppets lol. As a puppeteer myself, I study the art of puppetry as well as the artwork of animatronics and engineering. For the Final Fantasy part, you mentioned "We think they could've done a better job at hiding the actors' legs. Puppetry and any other form of art isn't just supposed to be on how they work. It's about the effort and the passion within it. A lot of puppeteers are exposed to the puppets' functions such as seeing the rods, strings, seeing the persons' arms, or even having the puppeteer stand next to the puppet. However it doesn't drive away from the character. Why look at the legs when you can look at the majestic creatures? I find it offensive that you mentioned that because the performers and the designers are doing a great job. Plus, the reason why the legs are there is because if the person was locked in the costume with the animal's limbs, that can cause injuries. I still love this and your work but I just had to give an explanation
